CLOG3 and Correct Exposure CANON R6

  • In the world of video, there are many different ways to expose your footage. Some people like to shoot in log and then color grade, some prefer to shoot standard video and then do their own color grading. I have always been a fan of shooting in CLOG because it gives you an extra stop of dynamic range and more control over your highlights and shadows. That extra stop of light is highly sought after when doing video work and color grading.
    I will show you two different ways to set proper exposure: one using only built-in camera tools of the Canon R6 and one using a little more advanced technique using a grey card a Ninja V and false colors.

    Its actually best to expose as bright as possible without clipping. And bring it down to desired levels in post - much cleaner this way, clog3 loves overexposing. You can use these same reference levels to onow what to bring it down to, or just eyeball it.

    I’m just getting started with Canon CLOG3 video using an R6MkII for wildlife and outdoor scenic shooting and after trying Zebra stripes with gray card I find I get better overall exposure of outdoor scenes by using the camera’s false color rendering. I have used the custom button settings to allow me to toggle false color on/off with the DOF preview button on the front of the camera.

    great video but what would be the difference in the false color values when shooting in clog3 compared to shooting in rec709? Isn't the recommended way in clog3 to shoot 1 stop over and lower it in post, that way getting less noise in the shadows? What would be one stop over in the false color values?

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  3 місяці тому +1

      I don’t feel I get more noise and as 18% grey never change, this is how I prefer to do it as a rule of thumb. You?

      @AndresArosemena 3 місяці тому

      @@persvanstrom I have to do some tests. I normally don't shoot on clog3 but just in rec709 but when I have, I feel I under exposed it a bit and I need to bring it up and see more noise than if I raise a same exposed shot but in rec709. I have watched a lot of people recommend to over expose the shot by 1 or 2 stops when using clog3 so that the shadows are more exposed and then in post you bring them down to the level that would have been exposed in rec709 and that would get similar results.

For example, exposing correctly for a shot facing one direction... but then when you change direction... or you go from inside to out. How do you keep the correct exposure? Hope that makes sense. :) loving the videos.

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for your nice feedback and so glad you like it. This is a tough situation but I would say it's also a typical ND-filter scenario. Either a variable ND filter on the lens or a more expensive solution like the Tilta Mirage matte box with variable ND filter with motor. If you don't mind the switch of DoF, then a quick Aperture switch could help with the exposure, but I would pref ND filter.

    how much zebra patterns do i have to watch out for? does it have to cover all parts of my face?

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  18 днів тому

      It is all of those annoying answers where I have to say it depends. ☺️ decide where on your face you want a matching exposure and then look for zebra patterns on that spot. Usually I find that 40 to 60% off my face on the light side will be covered.

  • @ArtyomPersidskyTube
    @ArtyomPersidskyTube 5 місяців тому +1

    Hi! Thank you VERY much for your video! So, As I got you right, you also set zebra to 40% and wait when you see zebra cover all your face, right? What if I set zebra to 75 and wait while I have slightly zebra just a touch of it on my face?
    But anyway I still have a problem! the image is so noisy!!!! And what is strange is that I use Gamut and only out from log2 to 709 makes it less noisy. Can you explain to me why?

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  5 місяців тому

      Right :) and yes, you can set it to what you need and want, like 75. 40 just represent 18% grey in CLOG3 (and 2). Noise shouldn't be connected to either CLOG3 or not, or even ISO. Noise is just when you don't have enough light hitting the sensor. It can look noisy if you don't convert it correctly from LOG to rec.709 or if you miss exposure due to looking at curves in LOG and not 709.
      I would recommend to test a little. Only real truth you can use is that 18% grey is ALWAYS 18% grey no matter you run LOG or 709, so expose for that. It's always on 40 IRE. Test with only lighting your card in both log and 709 and then compare. If you have no difference in noise in the two, I would conclude exposure problems when you work in LOG. Let me know how it goes?

    • @persvanstrom
      @persvanstrom  Рік тому +6

      Thank you and that makes me so happy to hear. I need to watch my own video again if I missed that. The IRE answer is actually two. Around 50IRE in CLOG3 or 70IRE in Rec.709. Reason why it's two values is that to get 70IRE when your footage is graded and 70 is a typical IRE value for skin, we need to expose LOG for 50IRE as it get's stretched when we do our color space transformation. If you shoot in standard video mode (no CLOG3) and in Rec.709 then the Zebra should be 70. Zebra = IRE :) I hope that answers your question.

      You mean the camera settings when I'm the subject? A lot of running :D but one way is to rig a color chart in place of your subject's face (even if i that is yourself) and adjust until you are happy. I even thought about buying some sort of inflatable human head, but those are some sketchy heads 😂 so I just keep using my chart. I've used a balloon with success at some shoots. It's important to rig before you shoot someone else as well and you don't want to waste someone's time. So a great question, maybe I could make a video about that? Is it possible for you to evaluate H265 vs Clog3. I have been testing these two and even when overexposing, using native iso etc I will get cleaner files with a simple neutral profile with contrast dialed down -4 vs clog3. Working in resolve adding back colorspace, sRGB curve overexposing more or less handles noise and grain in clog3 but I still get color noise and a overall more sensitive file to work with. I guess it could be handled but still. From this perspective I would say that h265 10bit is much better to work with.
