How refreshing it is to see someone actually crunch some numbers on a motorcycle channel and provide laptimes and data to support their comparison.
It is so dissapointing when you see massive moto channels do comparisons at a circuit and all they give you is their "impressions", which are usually biased anyway. Never any numbers, data, laptimes... just feelings.

I totally agree about low down power being important at track days, in October at a track day I was amazed to see a guy on the new Ducati monster lapping faster than the best supersports bikes, I recently got the Monster demonstrator on test for the day and its low and mid range is amazing.

    • @Stratocasterhead51
      @Stratocasterhead51 2 роки тому +1

Lets not forget that as much as low down power helps on smaller, tighter tracks, as soon as the going gets really fast (im talking Mugello, Dijon, Silverstone, COTA... etc) the low down power becomes negligeable.
On a small, twisty circuit, a 400 will get frighteningly close to 600 or 1000 simply because the power advantage is irrelevant.

That's only 5 seconds of difference on two massively different setups. I'd love to see the times for a track prepped R7, there are some juicy mods for suspension as well as power adds now like wider throttle bodies, intakes, exhaust, milled generator, sprockets, etc... I wouldn't be surprised if that 5 seconds drops to 2 or 3.

( @N A ) He’s just saying he would like to see a built R7 vs a built “super sport” bike. I agree comparing a race bike to a stock bike is very apples to oranges. And yes, for a race prepped bike vs a stock street bike, 5 seconds is a smaller gap than I would’ve imagined. (Also, an exhaust with no tune/flash doesn’t make this a non-stock bike. Power gain with no ECU reflash will be negligible at best.)

not just a good review of the two bikes, but some great track day advice too. Intermediate track days on 600SS can be real challenge in more ways than just mentioned here. As pointed out between the two bikes, usable torque is big factor to lap times, and riders with less than average corner speeds, but gobs of torque out of the exits - they not only hurt thier own progress, but slow down the riders on less HP machines too (in the corners and braking). If I could wish one thing for TX track day hosts, please put the liter bike intermeidate as thier own class (instead of using experience to split the group). If I could do it my way, 4 groups of riders, 35 minutes sessions. A: beginners - B900: Intermediates with less than 899cc - B1000: Intermediates with more than 900cc - C: advanced. 25 minutes seesions are too short to get clean laps, 50-60 minutes requires some serious endurance. 30-35 minutes would be perfect.

A 400cc can't compete vs an SV 650 on a track like this. A small technical track with many turns can allow for a smaller displacement bike to compete but at a certain straight length, the larger displacement bike will outrun the other.

Cool vid Yammie. I really enjoyed this. Not sure I agreed with your assessment of where you make up time as a rider though. Rider ability is basically measured in how much corner speed you can carry, how hard you can brake and how early you can accelerate, AND how well you transition between these. If you brake later you make up time, if you have more corner speed you traverse that distance quicker and any speed you make up in corner exit, you keep for the duration of that section. All the serious racers always told me if you come out of the corner carrying 5kph more, then you carry that extra 5kph all the way down the straight.
It is always amazing to see how fast some guys are on small bikes. When I was racing, the fast guys in F3 (400 multis and 650 twins) were only 4 seconds a lap slower than the pro guys on their 1000s. (1:02 vs 58secs). AND that was a very fast, flowing track, with top speeds of 315kph, so it suited big fast bikes.

You didn't read your chart correctly, you are looking at MPH vs. Distance (not time). That is why they are equivalent in length and allows you to see any differences in speed at the same point on the track. Also allows you to see your acceleration based on the slope of the line.
And for what its worth the only thing that moves you forward is torque. But if the engine spins faster then you can have a more advantageous gear ratio at the same speed. So, even if you are making less torque at the crank you have more torque at the rear wheel after it has been transmitted through the transmission. That's why a R7 that makes 50 ft-lbs of torque can be so much slower than a R6 that makes 45 ft-lbs of torque, at the wheel the R6 is putting down a lot more torque at the same speed. Horsepower just kinda approximates that since it is a combination of torque and RPM.

As an owner of RS660 and Street Triple R - the whole comparison of anything against an older Daytona 675R is wonky (it was never really competitive against 600 supersports). The new 765RS has significant bump in HP and tuning which puts the new Daytona in class by itself, literally, as the sole motoGP 2 engine. And for the Aprilia, they engineered it to compete in the Twin Cups. It would be interesting to see the RS with a RaceECU, decatted and upgraded suspension go against a 765 Daytona, but still not quite an apple vs apple comparision (Twin vs Triple). Howver, the RS vs R7 vs SV650, all in race trim, will literally be 2022 storyline in Moto America this year.

You have to keep in mind, that the Daytona is fully race specced. Not only was it running on slicks, it had full brembos on. I am no pro, but if you gvie the R7 the brembo, raceslicks and öhlins which would be around 5k (I'm guessing) the difference between the Daytona and R7 would probably close to 0.
And then there is the Ninja400, with almost 50% less power and torque and skinnier tires. I don't think that that would match up well against these two.
You could say that the Daytona almost makes double the power than the R7, but it doesn't make double the Torque. And again the Daytona is race specced, it probably doesn't even have stock power.

He just has way too much experience on his Daytona 675 that's fully race prepped for it to be a fair comparison. Even after saying that, it was closer than I thought, I wouldn't expect a super twins bike to compete with a 600 super sport that's why they're in different classes. Yamaha wanted a bike under $10,000 to compete in the super twins. I think it does it better than anything else out there. Can't wait to see what the other brands bring to the table in the next year or two for the twins class.

A full blown race bike vs a stock R7 on non-slicks.... that accounts for a lot. Plus most typical track riders will be able to push harder and be faster on a R7 vs a SS600. This R7 has stock brakes? ABS still active? No SS brake lines? That makes an impact on confidence.... at a minimum the R7 being track configured (fairings, take lights, blinkers, etc. off) sticky tires, and good brakes would probably make up 1-2 seconds.

The R7’s suspension was already dialed in for that day. Unless you’re talking about a new rear shock and front forks - but that wouldn’t magically add 3 seconds. It would just improve feel for the rider and allow them to have more confidence.
When you’re on a 75HP bike on a larger track rider skill is all that matters. I was out running several liter bikes and 600’s on the R7 this day lol

Youve got to remember that it is the blending of good brakes, good power, good chassis setup that allows for a faster lap time.
Its easier to get close to a bikes potential if you have less horsepower: everything happens slowly. This is why you often see 600s lap faster than 1000s at track days: less power means it is easier to control.

@@JCarl-qq8kj My guess is there's a lot of hype because it's the first bike from the Big four purpose built for the twins class which is the fastest growing racing class United States and Europe. It also has a bulletproof torque engine for under 9 Grand. The 600 class has been dying for over a decade that's why this bike exists. The bike isn't confused but I think you might be confused as to it's intended purpose. Sales for super sport 600s and 1000s are 80% below what they were in 2008. That's another reason the bike exists super sports got overpriced and over focused very few people need to track machine of that caliber probably less than 1000 in the whole United States. But they R7 works perfect for me and a lot of other people. Enough power to keep me happy but out of jail. Fast enough to keep up with most 600s and 1000s at the track and it's cheap and easy to maintain. Another funny thing about the bike the is the faster the rider the more they seem to like and understand the bike. Average super slow sport bike guy tells me how slow it is and how it only has 74 horsepower and how much faster there R6 is. When I took the bike to the racetrack with a bunch of racers and expert level riders they were all very curious about the bike I let some of them ride it and they all really enjoyed it and thought it was a fun bike.

The R7 is a 9k street "beginner" bike (for real world riding) not a nearly 12k R6 (race prep easily over 15k). Hence at 15k (a 2021 inflation price) i see no reason to buy a 600 R6 with 120hp when you can almost get a 1000 sports bike 200hp GSXR-1000 or 12k stock new GSX-S1000 that laugh at the R6. A new R6 at nearly 15k would cost too much for what it is (a mere 600), the older R6 model prices were good for what the bike was. Hence brands are slowly moving to 900 ish bikes (see new upcoming KTM sports bike road legal) instead of R6 and ZX6R.
The new 900ish KTM sportsbike will ridicule R6 for nearly the same price.

Very good video. I was curious about the R7 vs Daytona 675. The weight distribution of the triple is a lot closer to the CP2 than an i4. I have a ZX6R that I was planning on converting to a track day bike when my 60th Anniversary World GP R7 arrives. Damn the supply chain!!! But during the test rides on the standard R7, it was noticeably easier to tip in on cornering at faster speeds. Wait... this is going to take to long to explain this way. Seeing you turn laps that close(considering setup and familiaity) reinforces my idea that I may want to sell ZX6R and get something like a Daytona 675 for track days. I feel like regularly riding the R7, will negatively impact my track days on the top heavy i4. Or even be dangerous if I don't take enough time adjusting to the change in weight distribution. I know the 675 doesn't have nearly the top end potential of the ZX6R, but I feel like I will be able to adjust quicker and safer from my street ride to my track ride. Great video!!! Keep it up.

I think what you should do is make your Zx6r fully track oriented, change some of the teeth from front and back to make it quicker and sacrifice some of the top, get full system (if you don't have one) and enjoy. Atleast Zx6r would be more comfortable.

    • @timothythomas72
      @timothythomas72 2 роки тому +1

@@kestrel3509 thanks for the input. I've already done the sprocket changes for better acceleration. But the problem with the i4 and CP2 is the weight distribution, not the top end speed. The best way to describe it is to draw 3 lines on the profile of a bike: 1 top, 1 middle, and 1 bottom. The i4 has more weight in the top half and the parallel twin has more weight in the bottom half. That's why the parallel twin is more "flickable" as they say. That's not a manufacturer or setup thing. That's just the nature of the i4 vs parallel twin. So after the very basics, chasing lap times goes in opposite directions. The i4 requires more braking, as late as possible, and way more body position changes. Even on the twisties near my house, my butt is mostly hanging off to the inside of the turn on the ZX6R. You have to compensate for that extra weight at the top. On the parallel twin you have to brake as little as possible and maintain as much speed as possible through the turn. The parallel twin doesn't have the acceleration or top end. So it's all about maintaining speed. Not how quickly you can get back into the throttle. I know it doesn't sound all that different, but it's actually huge. If you try to attack the track on a parallel twin the way you do with an i4, your going to hurt your lap times. If you try to attack the track on an i4 the way you do with a parallel twin your going to hurt yourself.

I've watched a bunch of videos over the last year or so that at some point say/comment
about starting on a "smaller" bike at the track. I bought the original Ninja 900 way back in
'85. 35 years later I was once again able to afford to invest in the legendary Ninja, this time
a true "liter bike", the ZX10R. It truly is a beast to ride. As much as I would love to "invest" in
a smaller bike for the track there is no way I can even think about getting another bike. Last
summer I "discovered" track days and have been extremely fortunate to get to 3 track days
this past summer and somehow managed to not crash my bike and actually learn a little bit
along the way. I admit the ZX10R ain't the ideal bike to learn how to ride at the track but, with
no other option I have found it to be the most "fun"/most terrifying/most excitement/biggest
