Yeah the R7 was a smidge faster around such a tight track where the R6 could not really stretch it legs. Unless you live by the Tail of the Dragon the R6 and other 600-class race replicas are absolute trash street-bikes. The utter lack of torque only makes things entertaining at extralegal speeds and that's no way to live. I forsee the R7 being far, far superior as a middleweight sportbike for the masses instead of a zillion-RPM machine that feels lethargic as a scooter until triple digits.
I absolutley get the comments regarding the on paper lack of performance of the R7. However having ridden all sorts of poweful bikes, I dropped to an XSR700 back in 2016. Totally agree with you mate 👍 had loads of "big" bikes and gotta say my old MT07 was a blast although I love my gsxs750 I might get tempted next year 😉
What i would like to see on a Head to Head. 1. Lap Times 2. Acceleration side to side 3. Braking times side to side... This video gave me 0 of what i was expecting to see.
Yammer Noob made a video of comparing the lap times side-by-side with an R7 and his race bike he even went through all the different braking zones to show you the difference on corner enter and exit speed
it ain't that hard. R6 is a R6 the R7 is a MT-07R with a R7 badge. so question is do you want a naked bike with fairings or a sport bike that's all the comparison you need between the two bikes.
It is interesting because the r7 is basically a linear jump in price/performance from the R3. The problem being they should have moved the line further. 75hp isn’t bad but it’s only 33hp ahead of the r3. I agree with others they should have went with an R9 or something of a larger twin since they already breached the 600cc insurance line. Insurance is bananas compared to the R3, with the R7 being over $1k a year with full coverage you might as well spend the extra and get a liter bike.
A lot of it is down to using all that hp that is given for either. You'd get more fun wringing the neck out of the R7 for you may be able to with confidence and not intimidating whereas with the R6 it is with hesitancy most times for many. I was actually looking forward to see a head to head comparo reference one to the other though as the head line claimed!
Titles mean nothing. Everything is clickbait, and most people, including this guy, have no fucking idea what they're talking about. UA-cam is a business for most people now since about 2012. No one just makes a video for fun and uploads it. They're all only doing it for clicks and money.
I think what you've said about the R6 is just whats magic about this bike. It's scares you to push it to the limits, with it will sure give you more satisfaction at the end of the day, and with time and respect it will get the better biker out of you. R6 > R7 (far away)
In my opinion the R7 is a great looking bike (important) at a very reasonable price. Ridden at normal speeds on the road it would be excellent, the R6 is a completely different animal and you can't really compare the two...you pays your money and takes your choice, well done Yamaha for giving people the choice
There is no mystery between these bikes even the price is different. R7 for those who wants(most of consumers) to ride mainly in urban areas. R6 for those who wants to ride on track or on highways. Cost of maintenance is also a very important decision factor for many people!
@@danieljordannicol9937 r6 just dont make sense in today day and age its cost way to much and its quite a serious pieace of kit but the huge argument for it is is it worth it you can just get a liter bike for serious track work and r7 would is far better on the road and can be equally just as fun on the track the problem with the r6 or supersport class is that there no place for them today liter bike are just faster with better tech hardware software and weight about just as much unlike liter bike of yester year r7 make more sense for neweer or intermidiate rider who wants abit of simple cheap fun.
Remember all the videos saying the SV650 was as good as a GSXR 600? Or the Kawasaki 650 was as good as the 636? No, because no one said that. People comparing the R6 and R7 are missing the point. Sure the R7 is a good bike, maybe even an excellent bike for newer, less experienced riders, but in a real world scenario or on any track that isn't a twisty go kart track the R6 wins.
Problem is: it's an YZF-R.. with 100cc's more, one would expect more performance Ok "the environment",... equal performance? Nope, you're riding a choked to death wannabe racebike, this thing has less power than a 2007 SV 650 and almost as heavy Since when did bikers go from wanting to be the bestest, fastests, extremests, to coveting the last place in the paralympics? The only reason to buy a bike like this is because your license doesn't allow it, for the price, you'll find better bikes second hand
@@Nightdare "with 100cc more, one would expect more performance" - not at all haha. It is a whole other type of engine, can not be compared with the cc.
I bought a R7. Great on the roads. Really nice because it not to excessive for the road. R6 you definitely want to ride faster. I have a KTM 890 R now to. It screams trouble. Super fun 2 cylinder. Track R6 all the way.
The R7 is no R6 replacement. its basically the Ninja 650 rival (2 cyl engine, more or less the same power, R design, low end model), and it destroys it badly, so, well done. Maybe the R9 will be the R6 replacement.
No no no, bored of twins and the sound they make. If I wanted a twin sports I'd head to Italy and pick up a Laverda 750S for £4k. We're living in a nanny state, I was reading that bikes fall into the same catagory as petrol/diesel cars, that the UK gov are banning combustion engined bikes too. I don't get it, 37 million cars in the UK and only 1 million bikes half of which are used for a few days a year so I don't undersatand why petrol bikes are being banned when they account for so little polution.
It doesn't matter. Once the petrol cars disappear, so do the petrol stations & the petrol bikes won't be able to get anywhere. We'll get a stay of execution compared to the cars, but in the long run, we depend on the same infrastructure. That's assuming that petrol cars do go the way of the dodo. If electric can't scale up properly & synthetic fuel or hydrogen come good, then everything changes again.
That's in the accompanying article :-) - we'd finished recording by the time I downloaded the laptimes, sorry. Have a look towards the bottom of Chad's original review for my additional thoughts: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/bikes/yamaha/r7-2022
I love small under powered sport cars like Mazda MX-5, Honda S2000, Acura RSX, Afla Romeo GTA-v, Lotus Elise, etc etc etc...so, im sure id enjoy this bike for the street too.
Maybe the R7 could be more fun and easy on road but in my opinion the gap from low power R series and R1still remain. The only way is the R9 and I hope Yamaha will produce soon.
The r7 engine could do with another 20-30hp. If it were around the 100bhp mark it would be a no brainer. I’ll stick with my r6 2co for now😊 although the aprilia rs660 looks great and has the power too! Just a shame it’s got a lot of reliability issues at the moment 😔
Had both the MT and now race the R6, You could see he struggled selling the R7 next to the R6 as the R6 is superior in every way and worth that extra money. R7 has a little more peak torque but you run out of puff pretty fast and it’s generally a lot slower
It depends on what you're doing with it man. The r6 outclasses it that's obvious. This isn't an R6 replacement. It's a stop gap measure riding the supertwin racing popularity. Some of us will be racing these. If you want a 600, clearly you should buy a 600.
R7 is a genius idea in all honesty. Yamaha completely controlling the market direction with this is amazing the R7 alone is making large difference in America where it's actually considered a beginner bike😅 I should know cause it's actually my 2nd bike
You don't have to spin anything, the new gen 'racebikes' are crap for an analogy, they are advertising these things as if humans going back to living in trees is 'progress' 💩💩
@@0cool966 yeah exactly. R7 is a bike for people who want to look like they like sport bikes but in reality don't. they are trying to push for torque while sacrificing the one thing high speed applications need the most which is HP. i blame all the idiots who constantly complain about how you can't use that power anyway when you in reality can and they just suck dick or are to much of a pussy to actually push the bike. it just infuriates me when people think they can change the whole recipe and then still be included in the gang. the reality of the situation is that the R7 is a trash bike just because of it's name. if it was named MT-07R then it would have ben a great bike
@@rampage3337 Not really. It is an MT-07 engine and frame but they haven't just slapped clip-on and fairings onto it and called it a day. The R7 is geared a bit differently to give more low-end torque and a higher top speed. They are significantly different in how they feel and it's not for PR, it's just to partially fill a void. The MT line is applauded as one of the best bikes out there. It makes sense to build off of that with the new bike. The R7 is not being marketed as a new R6. It never was.
Love the r7 i wanted to hate it because of the old r7 race homologation special from years ago. But smiles for miles great little bike. Obviously built for a price but its got loads of potential for a supertwin racer. Or just a first bike after passing your test. Fairing works really well. Styling is fantastic. Call it a Super sport til your Blue in the face. That dont make it one. I own 2 R6's and im happier than ever they pulled them. They are only increasimg in value. If they are "re defining " the super sport class. Then they should Probably Re Name it.
I wouldn't get an R7 because i want to play Rossi to my mates. The cp2 is a great city/ backoad engine powerwise, you'll never use the 120 hp at 13k rpm on the r6 outside a track at all. And to add on the benefits, the r7 looks nice and sounds nice.
I don't know. I was expecting the wet weight to have a huge difference from the R6 to balance out the lack of power. yes it might be cheaper but if i want a lightweight nimble track weapon I would just get a Daytona 675R. I wish I could borrow one and try it on a windy road or at the track. That might change my mind.
yeah the R7 is just useless as a R7 bike. it's not a real sport bike and not a real R bike. it's a MT-07R for people who whant to look like they like sport bikes but in reality ain't about that life. i just find the R7 cringe. it misses the point of what a sport bike should be and is rather just a naked bike with sport fairings. it's it's name that ruin it the most. if it was just named MT-07R it would have ben a wonderful bike but because it's named R7 and people believe they are in the same class as other R bikes just makes it cringe. if it was named MT-07R then people would think of it as a naked bike with more sporty fairings for less wind problems. point is that there is no reason to get the R7 as a sport bike because if you want something cheap like 2-5year old used bike. if you think they bike is to much for you and you want to take it easy att first? get a naked or get a smaller sport bike to begin with.
I,ve got a proper R7 owo2 at 147 bhp and to be fair it can be out guned by a good rider on an R6 nowadays, its still an awesome bike to ride ,but most are just pieces of art or showroom investments, i ride mine on road and track and it comes alive on track, i,ve not got a problem with the new model but i wished yamaha had model named it the YZF7 or something else, the name R7 ruffles a few purists feathers, although i would still buy the new one, but in aniversary colours with all the extras, but it will cost around the 10k mark,. i might just try one on a bennetts track day in 2022,.
Sorry that the R6 is not available anymore. As an enthusiast I would not buy the R7. Does not have the punch to satisfy. I would be looking at a BHP in the range of 135 or higher.
I know why the journalist's keep hammering away at the price of this bike however 8200 pounds is still a lot of money. Unless you are planning on racing it in a class, in which case your going to surpass that Aprilia money quickly, why would you not buy a used anything else that's better. Almost any supersport out there built in the last 10yrs is faster, has better components, aftermarket support and will cost considerably less. They market these new bikes like there is no used market. Long live the 600 class!
I really wanted an r7, but was afraid the twin would be screaming and leave me wanting on the long straight highways in Texas. Ended up with a cb650r, in-line 4, so not quite as punchy down low, but plenty of headroom
I'm struggling to decide between the two. Heard some reviewers say the r7 was more fun, but the honda certainly gives more comfort and room to grow into
@@BySixa was hard to find decently put together reviews of the cb650r. Yammy noob kinda glossed over it until he took it to the track and really opened her up, then he loved the bike. In the end I think most other bikes in the 650/700 class would be excellent for darting around the inner city/twisties, and I have zero complaints with the cb650r in that regards. But I also put a lot of highway miles to get to the twisties and in TX if I’m not doing 85 on the highway I’m gonna be roadkill. Hence the desire for something with a bit more top end than a parallel twin. Best way to describe riding the cb650r is there’s a little flat spot in the power band at about 6k rpm. Below 6k it’s quite torquey, not a torque monster, but plenty of torque to dart around and have fun. About 6300 rpm it’s all HP and when slamming through the gears I never drop out of that go juice. At some point I’m going to get an exhaust (kinda liking the quite, other bike is dump out exhaust and loud af) and get it flashed, which will remove the flat spot. Edit: also keep in mind that more fun is relative to what you’re trying to do. In the words of yammy, I’m not tryin to ride “dank nooners” all day. I was after something quick, real world fast (don’t need to hit 90 in first gear), and agile. The cb650r/cbr650 delivers in all of those.
I like your comparison review made it’s pretty cool keeping up with the latest technology and the differences question why didn’t they put a 10 valvetrain head on the R7 when they did it on the TRX, 850?
Has anyone realised that engine doesn't like to be ridden up on RPMs? For that style of motorcycle, one WILL want to push it, and above 7/8k RPM, there's NOTHING. But what do I know?
Since it's more a torque over hp engine, you'd the fun is where the torque is at. And that's also probably the reason why they don't seem so happy up high, because they're torque focused engines.
@@Daniel-dj7fh I suspect you need to study how engine configurations work a little more. It's also known yamaha doesn't change the gearing according to use. Think about that.
This confirms what I knew all along. This is definitely a beginner bike and aimed towards women. The girl scene is kicking up as of late as most of you see on tik tok lol. Girls on 1000rr and R1. Please
Im collectn my new R7 on my bd in May. currently im on a 1983 SR 50 - looking forward to the leap into modern tech :) I may even take it to Isle of Man seeing as you mentioned it and win the bloody thing :) ... how hard can it be right?
I have a hard time choosing between my girlfriends Duke 390 and my GSX650. 2 completely different worlds but each have their own benefit. Can't deny the street chops of the Duke. Same for the R7.
It's ridiculous to think that thats R7 is costs -+£16K in my country compared to -+£8K in Uk. But our average salary is 5x less than in the UK. So it's technically 10 times harder to buy that kind of bike in my country and some of Asian countries. (others big bike and supercars also double the price than in the Europe or in the US and exacerbated with 5x lower average salary).
My buddie who had no riding experience got a grom as his first bike and he’s been riding for a few years and it is great leaner/fucking around bike and he was asking me about upgrading because he has out grown it and wants more highway capability. He was asking me about the 300cc bikes and I feel like he will be happier 6 months down the road with something like the cbr 500- r7 range. He likes the styling but doesn’t want to get into the 4cyl sport bikes. Any opinions?
I started back in the 80's on a first gen GSXR750 in the early 2000's I owned a1989 FZR1000 sold it in 2011 way more power than I ever needed, now in 2022 at 56yrs old I just ordered the Yamaha 60th GP Anniversary Edition R7 this should have all the power and nostalgia I will ever need.
Pining a 2 cylinder against a 4 cylinder on the track is laughable. I'd own a Honda ruckus over the R7. It is total sacrilege that Yamaha disconnected the R6. Look up the numbers and performance of the R3, ktm 390 and the mt07 and compare them to the R7. It's a cruel joke. Every Supersport rider will know and feel the difference. The people that pick up this bike got played.
They’re bringing back the R6, but you’re gonna be even more disappointed when it has 101 hp to comply with commie euro emissions regulations. The r7 is great, and I’ll take it over an R6 for the street. Having ridden both I find the r6 to be fun but they should really just let the 600cc super sport class die . With technology as it is, you can buy an R1 (with rider modes, premium tech, and other fun shit that the r6 lacks) and it will behave better on the street than an r6 while weighing the same as an r6. Having bought my 60th anniversary r7 below MSRP I would say I haven’t gotten played at all considering I actually use it on the street. And like my old r6, Has enough power to do what I need to do.
dude thank you.. the r7 is a poser ass motorcycle. anyone that really rides knows that this shit is false advertisement from yamaha. such a pathetic bike.
@@aadmzz7428 I think the only mistake yamaha made was the name and letting journalists compare it to the R6 because really they are designed for different purposes. Bring on the R9, must be a market for it now with the change in supersport rules. Mt09 engined sports bike to race against the MV F3 and the triumph and a bike people could actually buy for the road. Surely the outlay for yamaha would be low too as it’s a well established platform already.

@Phil Anderson I will give you a solenoid wire schematic. It is all about the electromagnetic field strength, increase the power by changing the number of loops or variation of turns.
So Yamaha made this to fit into a specific Isle of Man race class and now they're desperately trying to Market to public to make up for engineering cost😂😂😂😂 this bike is pointless
So even though the R6 is heavier and faster technically, would it be considered okay and or better for a more newish rider, considering it actually has abs and can prevent itself from doing wheelies if programmed I guess?
The R7 has to come standard with abs for EU countries. And you can also program the cp2 to cut power if the front and rear wheels spin at different speeds which would also prevent wheelies.
@@optix6222 Honestly even the R7 is actually a dumb first bike, sure it's manageable if you can use your brain, but you won't really learn on something like this unless you really put effort in improving your riding.

I really wanted the r7 until I sat on one. Yamaha went way too race oriented and made a bike that's uncomfortable for the road and underpowered for the track. What I wanted was an r3 with more power and better suspension. What I got was an r6 with no power.
I thought you were going to compare the R7 to the R6 track performance? I agree for a light bike with a little more than half the HP, the R7 is a competitor in its class. The R6 is not in the same class which I think you have said. Sad to see the R6 go.
I thought they made R7 super sports until I heard 2 cylinder... why mate 2 cylinder engine with super sports chassis? The modern emission regulations + auto maker collaboration is absurd
The R7 is supposed to bridge the gap between the R3 and R1, how? Good luck to the rider that makes the jump from the R7 to an R1. Bike does look great.

Totally agree with you mate 👍 had loads of "big" bikes and gotta say my old MT07 was a blast although I love my gsxs750 I might get tempted next year 😉
True but going fast is more fun for me 🏍💪🏽
What i would like to see on a Head to Head. 1. Lap Times 2. Acceleration side to side 3. Braking times side to side... This video gave me 0 of what i was expecting to see.
Have a look at the accompanying article for lap times and a comparison chart
Yammer Noob made a video of comparing the lap times side-by-side with an R7 and his race bike he even went through all the different braking zones to show you the difference on corner enter and exit speed
The R7 was faster on the lap times mentioned in the article.
it ain't that hard. R6 is a R6 the R7 is a MT-07R with a R7 badge. so question is do you want a naked bike with fairings or a sport bike that's all the comparison you need between the two bikes.
My last 4 bikes were liter bikes including a 2004 R1, but at my age I no longer care about pushing the envelope, so the R7 seems like a great deal.
Yes, I agree. I admit to being disappointed to not see at least a comparative lap time.
You can compare the 2 this is what this article was all about.
The R6 is no longer a on road choice 😢
There is no mystery between these bikes even the price is different. R7 for those who wants(most of consumers) to ride mainly in urban areas. R6 for those who wants to ride on track or on highways. Cost of maintenance is also a very important decision factor for many people!
For highway id go with R7, much more fuel efficient and more comfortable.
R6 is awful on motorways
@@danieljordannicol9937 r6 just dont make sense in today day and age its cost way to much and its quite a serious pieace of kit but the huge argument for it is is it worth it you can just get a liter bike for serious track work and r7 would is far better on the road and can be equally just as fun on the track the problem with the r6 or supersport class is that there no place for them today liter bike are just faster with better tech hardware software and weight about just as much unlike liter bike of yester year r7 make more sense for neweer or intermidiate rider who wants abit of simple cheap fun.

No, because no one said that.
People comparing the R6 and R7 are missing the point. Sure the R7 is a good bike, maybe even an excellent bike for newer, less experienced riders, but in a real world scenario or on any track that isn't a twisty go kart track the R6 wins.

Did I miss the part of the video that showed the lap times for comparison 🙄

Had both the MT and now race the R6, You could see he struggled selling the R7 next to the R6 as the R6 is superior in every way and worth that extra money. R7 has a little more peak torque but you run out of puff pretty fast and it’s generally a lot slower
It depends on what you're doing with it man. The r6 outclasses it that's obvious. This isn't an R6 replacement. It's a stop gap measure riding the supertwin racing popularity. Some of us will be racing these. If you want a 600, clearly you should buy a 600.

Spin it anyway you want to: R6, one of the greatest supersports ever with an in-line 4 that revs like a Formula 1 car. R7, an MT-07 with fairings.
You don't have to spin anything, the new gen 'racebikes' are crap
for an analogy, they are advertising these things as if humans going back to living in trees is 'progress' 💩💩
Exactly. Everyone in these reviews are pushing R7 which is simply worst bike if you are buying super sport. Just a PR spin.
R7 is a MT-07R with R7 badges for marketing reasons.
If it doesn't rev to the moon its not an R its an MT. Just my honest opinion. Im also pretty sure the R6 would wet mop the R7 around a track.
And you’re point is what?
@@northernowl7087 pretty self explanatory I think.
I don't think anyone ever said that the R7 is supposed to be faster than the R6

For me it's such a let down. I wish Yamaha would move away from this R7 derivative also. R6 = screamer R7 = twin lacking any balls...
Love the r7 i wanted to hate it because of the old r7 race homologation special from years ago. But smiles for miles great little bike. Obviously built for a price but its got loads of potential for a supertwin racer. Or just a first bike after passing your test. Fairing works really well. Styling is fantastic. What was the time different on track...?
I,ve got a proper R7 owo2 at 147 bhp and to be fair it can be out guned by a good rider on an R6 nowadays, its still an awesome bike to ride ,but most are just pieces of art or showroom investments, i ride mine on road and track and it comes alive on track, i,ve not got a problem with the new model but i wished yamaha had model named it the YZF7 or something else, the name R7 ruffles a few purists feathers, although i would still buy the new one, but in aniversary colours with all the extras, but it will cost around the 10k mark,. i might just try one on a bennetts track day in 2022,.
it sounds horrible, I really dislike the twin cylinder sound. I love the high revving inline 4s
As society becomes more docile and less aggressive, so will the vehicles the newer generation of riders will want.
they have simply out priced themselves. 12k, you can get a car for that price

In my dream world the R7 would have been a modern OW-02 then Suzuki would counter with an all new GSX-R750, if only
Has anyone realised that engine doesn't like to be ridden up on RPMs?
For that style of motorcycle, one WILL want to push it, and above 7/8k RPM, there's NOTHING.

R7 Cant beat R6 on the road or circuit😎👍
Did you not read the last time results?? The R7 beat the R6 around the track in this test.
It will in sales :D
Tht R7 is LAM approved bike?
I like the yamaha r7 but I would like to see some lap times too.
Take a look at the accompanying article, it’s a full review of the R7 from the press launch followed but the breakdown of this particular test towards the bottom. The link is in the description.
I really wanted the r7 until I sat on one. Yamaha went way too race oriented and made a bike that's uncomfortable for the road and underpowered for the track. What I wanted was an r3 with more power and better suspension. What I got was an r6 with no power.
MT 07
@@nickn8564 great bikes. my next is going to be a s1000r tho
Pointless as the r7 isn’t something to match or replace an r6, some places in the uk the r7 will be more fun Mallory etc but the r6 is a god
The R7 is supposed to bridge the gap between the R3 and R1, how? Good luck to the rider that makes the jump from the R7 to an R1. Bike does look great.
I'm more of a countryside rider, I think I'm going to love the bike
Wish they'd make an R9
Nice looking MT-07R.
Still a big gap between an £8500 commuter bike in a frock and a £20k R1 though.
Why get rid of an r6 for an overgrown moped??
