Numbers CAN lie and you facilitated that. If you are going to cite income v inflation for example - use current info. Apart from that, there is a lot to digest here. I suspect there are numerous nuanced reasons for the decrease in motorcycle riding but motorcycles sales have remain steady for the last 15 years. But numbers: Look at 2008 - yes, sales were down significantly from 2006-07, but they were still 300k + over what we are seeing now. It was 2009 when US sales nose-dived (world-wide financial market collapse) and they never recovered. The US is sitting at half the sales of 2006.
If it really is income induced, wouldn't a motorcycle be much easier to purchase/finance/insure/maintain/fuel than a car? Personally, I think its safety issues associated with the proliferation of distracted drivers on smart phones. I know quite a few cyclists who have set aside their road bikes for mountain bikes and trails because of distracted drivers.

Motorcycling is scary sometimes, especially at first if you have no prior experience. I had to force myself to practice riding for a couple months after i got my license before I got comfortable going on a ride without thinking about it. As someone in their mid-30's who took a 10 year break from motorcycles, there's a good reason why I just got back into it. I think motorcycles have shifted towards being more of a hobby, and it's a hobby that I missed. I got an early Miata to try and scratch that openness and small light vehicle itch, but even then there is just no substitute to being on a bike. Yeah, I got a Grom, but that's all I really needed for getting back on the saddle and riding around my local backroads. I took a long break because the last bike I got was stolen, and it was hard for me to justify buying a new one. I finally had enough spare cash to buy one so I stopped procrastinating and went out to the dealer and bought one. Getting new gear can get expensive, but once you got it you got it.

Properly maintained motorcycles are not unsafe in and of themselves. Riding them aggressively on public roads reduces their safety as does riding in cities and inner-ring suburbs because of the obliviousness of other motorists. Greater traffic density makes motorcycles a less safe mode of transportation, but the motorcycles themselves are seldom a cause for concern.

What we used to have that is missing now is abundant, inexpensive, Japanese dirt bikes and places to ride them. This was most people's introduction to motorcycling in the 70's and 80's. You used to be able to pick up an 80 or 100cc for a few hundred bucks and go have a good time with it for months. Making your first mistakes on dirt and learning the body movements to operate the bike is much better in a field than even an MSF course in a parking log.

When going through something tough in life doing something so exhilarating is all we need sometimes. I got a 2003 cb 919 with 14k miles on it. Beautiful and powerful bike. I respect the power and it respects me back. Anyone on the fence about it I suggest you just do it. Yes it’s dangerous but that’s why you ride cautiously and enjoy your life. Be safe out there and do things for yourself once in a while!

Motorcycling is definitely something I’m looking to get into at 34. I’ve always wanted a bike, I love the idea of the freedom it can offer, meeting other riders, maybe even joining a club and travelling. My Dad used to have a bike when he was younger, he moved onto Land Rovers as he got older and was part of a Land Rover club. We travelled all over the UK and done quite a bit of off roading, it was the best! Being a part of a group of people who were all out to enjoy life, go sight seeing, camping, and who all had a love for their vehicles and the freedom and power they felt behind the wheel, was an immense feeling. I want that again, and I think a bike is the right way to go. Some of my cousins are motorcyclists too, so it’s still alive and well within the family. And I’m also a huge fan of the TT, something I’d love to rock up to on my bike for a weekend, have fun and again, meet likeminded people 😊❤

I can speak on this subject. Most people think all motorcycles cost 20k because of commercials. That's what they pitch, and that's what cagers believe. They think there are only 2 types of bike. Either the crotch rocket where the only speed you can do is 200 mph. Or the big massive harley that requires you to join a gang. So, they don't get into it. Most of them aren't aware of how to get training, a license, or any thing else. So, they push the idea away.

I seen a lady a while back during a rain storm say be careful or you're going to get wet, when in reality many years ago we would lay in the middle of the street and play with all kinds of little homemade boats and stuff of that nature. The problem that I have is with the younger generation and the fear of taking any risk whatsoever. The younger generation does not know how to go out and play at a young age they will literally ask you what does that mean. Motorcycles is something that is taught from older brothers and passed down and fathers and so forth in my opinion. I like how I sit up right, its not too powerful and has just power to pass when I need too. My wife and I were contemplating on getting a new car but they were just too expensive so I got the bike. My wife in August of 2023 took the MSF course and enjoyed it so much that she got a 2018 Triumph Bonneville Bobber with mini ape hangers bars. She rides twice a week for work, and averages about 70 miles on her trips. I already put 8500 miles on my CB and just replaced my tires. I believe that if gas continues to get outrageous more people will probably start riding. Disclaimer: We live in Tampa Bay area.

19yo rider here. Main reason a lot don’t ride is because it’s expensive, dangerous, or just won’t go out there way to get one. I’m on a ‘16 Yamaha r1 and just recently a ‘24 HD lowrider st. Imma be honest it kinda feels good to be the only one that can ride in my age group. I guess that the only thing that sets me apart from the rest. But I did it cause I didn’t have nothing to do and it seemed fun. Home, work, home. Im an Edgar I have a lowered truck but I don’t really hang around with other edgers. Started riding 5 months after I graduated HS. my pops is in a club and I kinda wanted to apart of it and now I am. But now a days riders my age are goofballs acting childish on bikes. I dislike that. You’re on a death machine! Acting goofballs smh. You can say I learned to be mature being in the club. I learned to ride in the club with older riders.

I feel like many things in life, motorcycling is going to go through a "phase"
Everything from the sea, the economy and even how long dad is going out to get a pack of cigs and the milk is going to take is constantly changing
things pendulate- the go back a fourth, up and down
They come into popularity, and come out of it.
I myself am a new rider looking to get into the scene this year (Im going to buy a ninja 400) and Im extremely excited.
The appeal for me is actually stronger because its not as popular and its counter-culture; and I know Im not alone in that.
Id bet most likely its going to thin out a bit, and evolve as a sport, hobby, and scene, then come back strong at some point.
Besides, motorcycling is punk and counter culture. Its a unique sport, and a special type of fold. I say we focus on enriching our own bonds and dragging more people into it.
Thank you yammie noob, Its pretty much your fault ive decided to make the jump this year! You channel has been an amazing resource for us all

53 and haven’t been on a bike since 1984. I’ve recently purchased 2. Royal Enfield GT 650 and a Kawi KLX300R. Best of both worlds.
I can say without a doubt they keep me sane. Riding forces me to stay in the present. The moment I put on my helmet, and do a few revs, my mood physically and mentally changes.

Can it be that older riders are selling their motorcycles, which means that less new ones are getting bought, which can result in lower sales?
(I’m saying that there might be too many motorcycles already existing)

About to turn 28 in a couple months and have been watching your channel for a few years now and this has inspired me to go buy a bike. As soon as I get some debt paid off.

Your explanations of cultural and societal changes that have been destroying not only motorcycling, but many other areas of the younger generations human functioning . . . just, well done man. I am a mental health clinician. All of my training lines up with your analysis here

I got my first bike 2 years ago. Messed up and tore my ACL in the first day. Finally did the MSF course and started riding just this week. So glad I didn't give up on it.

As a GenZ I can’t wait to get a good good job to afford a bike. Also I live in Italy so even if I start on a Japanese bike I’d love to own a Ducati or an Aprilia

You forgot that some states are making it harder to start riding on the road I mean now you haft to pay 250 pass or fail on a state required course to get your license, before very high DMV charges when they charge all together around 380 and a weekend it's really a ditterent to new riders

And there is no group of people who do more to discourage and discredit being a rider than the people who run those courses. Instead of welcoming people to the hobby, they are smug, condescending, and treat everyone like they are a know it all uncle teaching their 12 year old nephew how to ride. They also wildly exaggerate the dangers and difficulty of riding. They treat it like this special skill only the elect have. No. Old ladies in Thailand ride their super cubs every day in traffic that would make the typical GSXR bro pee his pants and ask for his mommy. It is not that hard.

It depends on your perspective. It might be in a transition and things will change in a way that makes ownership more sense. In India, it is a major means of commuting. But others with more means pick up more exotic options.

Bingo. He looks at this from a "Well if people don't do this for sport then nobody will do it" type of mindset. But the reality is that the worldwide market is shifting away from motorcycling as a sport. Manufacturers have an incentive to sell more motorcycles, and most potential riders should not be on the type of motorcycle Yammienoob likes.

I’m a relatively new rider with no direct influence. I moved to Canada, and was riding public transit and noticed someone riding a bike on a beautiful day, and just thought “man, that must be nice”. On that same day I took the theory test, and on that weekend I took lessons and passed the skills test and bought a bike (Duke 390, partly because of our Yammie here). Still riding it, have no regrets, absolutely love it, and have gotten two friends on bikes so far (and counting)!

I just rode out to our local lake and there was a group of about 30 people of all ages sitting in the parking lot all on sport bikes. A young guy started talking to me cause I was not part of the group, wanted to look at my ZX4rr. The group were not part of a club they all organized this on face book. I met more guys today than ever before. You are unique, you have mastered the modern. You are helping everyone knew who you are. We did not have this kind of disenfranchised organization years ago when I started. motorcycling lives on. Bravo PaPa Yam.

I just got my first bike last week, an SV650 and I love it! I'm not really into joining bikers clubs or gangs or anything, nor am I trying to go really fast, I just want to experience the joy of riding being exposed to the elements even when doing mundane things like going to work.
