    The Non-Canon Expert explains why more Jedi didn't use double-bladed lightsabers, describing why the Jedi Order frowned upon their use given their connection with the Sith and the devastating actions taken by a fallen Jedi named Exar Kun. Further, he will explain why double-bladed lightsabers conflicted with the Jedi Order's philosophy of lightsaber combat.

    Hey everyone! I hope your week is going well. For our Star Wars The Old Republic: A Complete History multi-video series, I decided to add in an opening Prelude episode to start with. This will allow me to touch on and explain some of the pre-Old Republic era leading up to the Galactic Constitution, particularly the topics of the Rakata and the Infinite Empire (which is a lot of fun anyway :)). This will put us in a better position of knowledge for Episode 1: The Birth of the Republic.
    Because I had a late start on the Prelude, and I don’t want to rush it, the first Prelude video will be released this Saturday, May 27th. However, going forward each new episode will continue to be released every Friday until we get through the entire era. Thank you for your ongoing support everyone! I hope you enjoy today’s video, as I thoroughly enjoyed putting this one together.

      It could work if she develops a defensive style based on counters like Darth Zannah, but that requires quite extensive training and considering that she, will have to act in combat situations, before her training is finished a single saber style combined with a more aggressive style, that builds on her experience with her staff. Also fghting with a staff is fundamentally different to fighting with a staffsaber, simply because you can grab a staff everywhere. She could learn to enhance her staff with the force to make it resistant to lightsabers, but that would take more time to learn than she probably has, if it is a difficult technique, there are no sources about how long it would take to learn and correct me if I´m wrong, but only one Jedi used to fight this way, ironically it was Exar Kun´s master and we know how that turned out. After all the most practical thing would be to learn to fight with a normal lightsaber and then expand when she is competent with that.

    "In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. Because the weapon is difficult to master, however, few among the Jedi - or even the Sith - understand it. They don't know how to attack or defend effectively against it. That gives those of us who use it an advantage over most of our opponents."

      True, but it was possible to activate just one blade at a time in many saberstaves. The blades tended to be longer than a standard lightsaber too, so there were options in regards to how it was used.
      Plus if you cut the handle in half, they were designed as such that you could still use at least one of the blades due to having two kyber crystals (as seen with darth maul)

    Exar Kun's double-bladed lightsaber was special because it still had a regular hilt, which made it look like a single-bladed lightsaber. Darth Maul's lightsaber on the other hand was basically just two lightsabers welded together. Which did provide the advantage of still functioning after being cut in half, since it had two crystals and two power sources.
    The strict adherence to the discouragement of anything Dark Side related by the Jedi can ultimately be seen as a self-inflicted blindness towards anything that clashed with their ideology. When the Dark Side did rise, the Jedi were unprepared. Maul proved this when he destroyed two Jedi with ease and only failed because of his arrogance. His aggressive Form VII style and use of a double-bladed lightsaber proved too much for Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan, whose Forms were geared more towards deflecting blaster fire and dealing with groups of enemies.

    • @maybebebi7060
      @maybebebi7060 7 років тому +11

      That's EXACTLY what made *Exar Kun's* lightsaber one-of-a-kind. It didn't resemble the common staff design like most double-bladed sabers had, and all those who were killed by it NEVER expected the weapon to have two blades, which gave *Kun* the element of surprise against his opponents. After *Kun's* time, no one has been able to create a saber like his due to it's incredibly complex design.

      Perhaps the Jedi feel that double-bladed lightsabers are as much a danger to the wielder than those being fought by them. Wouldn't using two single bladed lightsabers do as well without such cumbersomeness? Besides, wouldn't the staff like double-bladed lightsabers inhibit the movement ranged by single bladed lightsabers?

    • @Pun116
      @Pun116 2 роки тому

      What? Qui-Gon Jinn was a master of Ataru and taught it to Obi-Wan. That form is NOT effective against blasterfire, and it's definitely NOT effective against groups of enemies; it's quite the opposite in fact.
      It is effective at soloing opponents, which was perfect for the duel against Darth Maul. The reason why Qui-Gon lost is that he was old. Ataru fatigued him due to the forms commitment to force enhancing the body to maintain speed and rotation.
      A lightsaber staff would actually be perfect for this form, as the extra blade would offset the weakness to being outnumbered. Also, more blades makes an already fast form even faster. The perfect tool for such a cool lightsaber form.

    "Ya see young padawons, Jedi dont use double bladed light sabers because it's rather barbaric, and extra cruel. It was created to be a more effective weapon offensively. But us Jedi are humane, and only require 1 blade when in battle. On that note, today's lesson is on fatal strikes, our first technique is called, Decapitate. If you take a look here, Master Windu gives us a great example as he executes this strike flawlessly on Jango Fett in front of his 8 year old son. Now if he had done that with 2 blades I'd be worried for that child, the trauma if that would be astronomical compared to 1 blade

Perhaps a kind of feedback loop develops as the emotions get projected into the Force then sensed by the Force sensitive. Thus they receive a larger emotional rush then most people. The whole premise that two blades somehow give you a greater rate of attack etc. and is actually a superior weapon is totally flawed. Holding a staff like weapon in the middle like that wouldn't give you any advantage in speed, reach, or anything else, all you'd accomplish is severely limit your range of motion because you constantly have to worry about the blade you aren't attacking with hitting you instead.
    This is one of those really dumb things where people are basically going on video game logic. In reality the saber staff would be a cumbersome and stupid weapon that would have absolutely no merit, and the reason the Jedi don't use it is because it's just not effective.
    The one weapon that would actually have some merit that nobody seems to use is the saber pike, where a single lightsaber sits at the end of a long staff. Spears are actually more effective than swords in a fight, and polearms were the primary melee weapon of war throughout all of history, while swords were more side-arms for personal protection.

    As someone who has trained with actual martial weapons I can say, with absolute certainty, a double bladed lightsaber would be a TERRIBLE idea. The problem is that the lightsaber blade is LETHAL, even when touched with a gentle degree of pressure.
    The "staff" design is fine when it's made of wood ... because bumping a piece of wood against your leg or chest causes no harm ... but replace a length of wood with a bar of lightning hot plasma that literally cuts through flesh like a hot knife through butter, and you end up carving life threatening wounds into yourself with casual contact.
    EVERY time you strike out with one end of the saber staff, you point the opposite end back TOWARD YOURSELF. If you opponent strikes your staff with enough force, he can EASILY knock it hard enough to bump against you ... turning your attack against your enemy into an attack against yourself. Any time you point your own weapon toward yourself, that's a BAD idea!
    ...And don't even get me started on reverse-grip sword fighting! Ugh! The idiocy!

    Why is it that nobody in Star Wars knows how to use a double-ended weapon? The correct hand form is hands on opposite sides of the weapon (both thumbs pointed up). This produces a neutral stance with the blades slightly off vertical, which is ideal for blocking. The Sith (Darth Maul, Savage Opress, etc.) always seem to use a '2 hands over' grip (both thumbs to the inside) which puts your neutral position at the horizontal. To block any strike other than a vertical hack you have to cross your arms, which is clumsy.

So theoretically, a jedi could force push or pull someone without moving a muscle.
      The only reasons for someone to use a single lightsaber would be personal preference or fighting style.

    Well, there´s a rather simple explanation to it(according to Drew Kapyshyns book "Dart Bane"): A swordstaff doesn´t only hold advantages. In fact, against a trained a capable swordman you are most likely in a disadvantage. While the flurry of attacks can overwhelm the unprepared at first, once the enemy has figured out that both blades are connected the tables will turn. The position of one blade will always determine the position of the other blade, thus making the weapon a lot more predictable. On top of that your actual moveset with a double-bladed lightsaber is greatly limited as a lot of maneuvers you can pull of with a single blade would end up slicing yourself in half. Also, the weapon itself is vulnerable and the long handle a prime target for enemy swordstrikes, if it gets hit it may get destroyed or the sword is getting turned into two swords, forcing you to suddenly adapt you style, if you are even remotely as good with a single blade or dual wielding.
    In the book there´s a rivalry between Bane and a Zabrak at the academy they are attending. What I have said above is basically the gist of what master Kas´im who is pretty much the most talented swordfighter at the time tells Bane about the weapon his rival is using.

    I sure hope they bring Exar Kun back into canon. He's much like Revan, in that both characters had a fundamental impact on the times they lived in. They made eras of Star Wars storytelling their's and it would be weird to see them replaced by others. If Kun's era changes too much in its make-up in the canon continuity, then alright, introduce new characters. I'd be somewhat miffed by that, but I could understand it. I would at least like some references then, though. You gotta pay some respect to Legends.

    Now, as someone who both owns and has fought with a saberstaff. In real life, it's a tricky weapon to get used to. In lore however, it has several features we do not have and it's THOSE, I think, that turn it into a truly devastating weapon that Exar Kun is known for.
    First of all, it didn't just have two blades, it have multiple power settings and blade lengths for both blades, as well as being able to activate either of the blades as well as both, and it's the way Exar mixed all these things around that gives the staff it's true power. Take it one step further and add in a coupler and you give yourself access to even more options; Let's say we have a staff. Both blades have a normal, long and short setting and this can be changed on the fly as well as turning on or off each blade and disconnecting the weapon into 2 sabers.
    1. Turn one blade into long mode and the other off with both handles together, you've got a greatsword. Play the reach game and keep your opponent back. If your weapon is constructed right, they might not even be able to tell it's a staff. point your "pommel" at them as you wind back for a swing and turn on your second blade in long mode for a suprise attack!
    2. tight space? Turn one blade into short mode, disconect handles and store one on your belt. You've got a fast and agile weapon that'll fuction well where a normal lightsaber will struggle with space.
    3. Both blades on, mid size, handles connected; the classic saberstaff. Keep it in motion and spinning to distract lesser experianced foes with the blades before striking. Turn blades on and off when you need to sweep it through your body or for suprise attacks.
    4. Spilt blades, both mid sized. You've basicly got eskrima sticks. use faints and bluffs to work your blades past your opponents guard. Start a slash with one blade and then the other, pick one to follow through with.
    5. Split hilts, one normal one short; rapier and dagger combination. One tempo reposts a-plenty and a weapon for both long and short. Keep switching the sides around if you're ambidexrous, which you should be to some extent if you're using two weapons.
    6. Put it all together. Your opponent starting to react to your sequences? Switch it up! Unless they've studied all these different styles like you have (a lot of extra work, but no-one said using the staff was easy) you'll find one that they can't deal with.

    One additional weakness that's really notable: since you constantly need to mind the end that's on YOUR side, you can't control the direction of the one that's on your opponent's side as well.
    Also since you can't close the gap with your saber, you don't have as much raw leverage, so you're less flexible and can use less force.
    So to compensate for all of the drawbacks, you need to CONSTANTLY be on the move, and use flair to confuse and fool your opponent.
    This might be why it's so frowned upon by the order, it is not a weapon that you can really be "fair" with.

      They are pretty useless in a universe where laser guns and lightsabers, which are powerful enough to cut through most metals like butter, exist. The very few materials that can resist such power, like Mandalorian iron, for example, were too rare and too expensive to be feasible for constructing lightsaber-resistant shields.

    • @d.dementedengineerc99isurf26
      @d.dementedengineerc99isurf26 4 роки тому

      Sword with shield is a better tactic than sword alone, so your question is a good one. Actually, Darth Desolus did indeed use a saber/shield combo, as did his disciples. There are a handful of materials that are completely immune to lightsabers and blaster bolts, such as phrik, mandalorian iron/beskar, and cortosis. But even then, making such a shield would be very expensive and time-consuming! If one could actually do it, they should.

    I think that lightsaber duel was something extremely rare at the time of the movies and some time before.
    It could happened only with main characters or in a fights versus Grievous. Most of the jedi does not ever encounter another LS-user in a real fight. Never in their entire lives. They do mostly some diplomatic missions, sometimes fighting vs dozen of droids or single bounty hunter. And that's all. So they don't need to carry such complicated hard-to-learn weapon as double-bladed LS, which is designed to dominate in fights versus single-bladed LS-user.

  • @lamebubblesflysohigh

    They are also unwieldy in confined spaces which is almost everywhere inside spaceships, stations and buildings and they require extra level of mastery to use them efficinetly in such small spaces. Jedi also rarely fought alone which once again required extra caution while using these, both from user and his partner to not accidentally slash or be accidentally slashed by it during combat. Sith faced same problem with confined spaces but they had nothing against killing hence why they went that extra mile to train with saber-staffs... but after Bane and his "reform" of the order they worked from shadows and from behind the scene and it is harder to concealed carry longer hilt for the staff (you can't wear long robes on all planets without sticking out from the crowd)... there is also problem with training after Bane because if master didn't use it, the student had to rely on self study becasue there was noone around to teach it which adds yet another extra mile to master saber-staff.

    You know what's so funny about me with this subject? I thought for a good while it was because the design's flaws made many steer clear from it. I thought the flaws involved the device being prone to having malfunctions or safety concerns arise because of people realizing the possible accidents resulting from people using it or carrying it on a daily basis.
    (A person using the saber with one beam on, but suddenly the other side would turn on because of they or some other thing done something to turn on the other beam, when they didn't anticipated it. Then there was the debacle of the on switch. I am pretty sure Jedi have to be mindful of avoiding putting their weapon near things that could manage pressing the switches when they are not in use, even if they have already have them designed to protect it, like Luke's. You had to watchful of two buttons. With a light saber staff you have to watch out for two buttons on both sides.Then you add in the fact not every Jedi creates their devices the same way including the switch designs. One guy might've had like two switches on both sides of a light staff. (one designated for one beam to be turned on, while the other turns both simultaneously)
    I don't know how I came up with this explanation or where it came from. I just thought this for a long time. haha.

    I hate double bladed lightsabers. My reason for it is mostly personal as I have an interest in historical weaponry. A single blade is a concept that makes sense and has historical comparison to real swords. A double bladed lightsaber has no historical comparison and doesn't practically work. Why you ask? It's very simple. Any real martial technique using a pole weapon utilizes reach and full length of the weapon. This requires the wielder to move their grip along the full length of the shaft. If a double bladed lightsaber restricts to user's grip to the center of the weapon, reach is not utilized and therefore the weapon is not practical. If it was practical, there would be double bladed swords throughout medieval history. Outside of a few rare concepts that were never widely used, you will find no comparison.

    • @SinerAthin
      @SinerAthin 7 років тому +5

      Be careful when comparing swords to lightsabers tho, as there are a few important tidbits to keep into consideration as well :P
      Mainly how Lightsabers don't require much strength or leverage in the swing because of their ludicrous cutting power, and that they are actually very light weapons. All the weight would be in the handle, as opposed to being spread out across the entire weapon.
      This means that certain things that could never work in any practical sense with normal martial weapons might become feasible with lightsaber weapons.

    • @NumbingDisasterAnon
      @NumbingDisasterAnon 6 років тому +1

      If I can tip my hat in this half-year old thing. What the person above said is true, all the weight is in the hilt and not spread through the blade plus you can cut from any angle because it's pretty much one whole cutting surface.
      But the main purpose of the weapon isn't reach. It's about optimizing attack speed and defense rate in close quarters requiring a specialized combat style and unique mastering of said style. When using a saberstaff, you are going in with the mindset of instinct and quick flurries, not much room for thought and relying on muscle memory as well as the mythical Jedi/Sith abilities of predicting enemy movements.
      Optimally, you'll be letting off a flurry of blows that'll throw off and overpower your opponents before they can even think of a strategy. Attack first and attack fast. But even if you fail to kill your opponent in the first onslaught, you have better defensive capabilities to keep yourself afloat in time for an escape or a means to turn the tide of the battle.

    I'd argue the association with the Sith and Exar Kuun is not the only reason why Jedi rarely used double-bladed lightsabers. There are some combat moves that can be done with a single-bladed lightsaber that cannot be done with a double-bladed one. Consider how attempting a simple slash from right to left perpendicular to the torso with a double-bladed lightsaber would cut your self in half with the back blade.

    Two pieces of friendly advice: stop calling your video's 'video exposé', even if technically true it sounds a bit pretentious and gets annoying after watching two videos in a row. Another gripe I have is with how you keep cutting back to the same low resolution crop of your channel thumbnail, it is just not something visually pleasing to look at for more than a few seconds. Other than that, you make some pretty good content, keep it up!

      The repetitiveness of the word exposé tends to get stale, why not use some of its synonyms?
      (revelation, disclosure, exposure, report, feature, piece, column)
      Also, have you ever considered using a higher resolution image of Thrawn? Why the use of the low res image?
      Keep up the good work!

      video expose is his standard intro, it adds uniformity across his videos, & an intro is very standard across many many content creators, the thrawn image Is SWRC/the non canon expert, it represents him and acts as his avatar in this medium, that also is something very common across many content creators, & neither of those things have any reason to change

    Saberstaves comes with disadvantages as well. The range of movement is limited so you don't cut yourself. That's why you rely so much on acrobatics to move around or just simply block with the rear saber. A vertical overhead slash is practically impossible as the reas saber would impale yourself.

    I read the comment about if the lightsaber is struck on one end the other end toward the user could rebound and inflict injury to the user. Logical and sound argument. The answer is to use the lightsaber as a single blade long hafted weapon, then strike with the unlit side, suddenly lit in a surprise attack. Be smart with its use. And it can be just as effective as single bladed saber, but with a surprise in store for the cocky or inexperienced opponent.

  • @wchisholm2368

    A lot of the reason was also the difference in traditional weapon sets. The Jedi came from a culture which favored swords for melee while the Sith were more bladed-staff weapon oriented and illustrations of them from before lightsaber days often show them with those double-naginata like weapons or blade-flanged maces instead of just swords.
    Ancient Jedi on the other hand are almost always shown carrying a katana (which makes sense considering how knights are identified with swords more than any other weapon).

    I've always been attracted the the Double bladed lightsaber. In fact if I were a Jedi I would construct a double-bladed lightsaberpike. It would have longer than average hilt length, maybe three-four feet, and be constructed using cortosis alloy to prevent damage during lightsaber duels. the blades would also be removable from the ends of the hilt and useable as sepreat entities for single or duel wielding. the hilts could also be combined to make a standard length double bladed lightsaber for use in more confined spaces.

    I don't see how people can say double bladed light sabers have more disadvantages. They can be used as both a single saber or double bladed all throughout the battle anytime. Just retract one side in and have the opponent think it's a single saber and when you have the advantage ignite the other end to catch them off guard. Such as in SWTOR movie clip when hey are in the hanger.

    One detail that might not be described in universe but is very obvious: A single blade lightsaber is dangerous to it's wielder (to the extent that it s claimed that only forceusers can employ them effectively), a double bladed lightsaber would be even more dangerous to it's wielder, hence it would take more training to be able to employ the weapon safely, which I believe is the reason we don't see more of them. For the Jedi it would mean dedicating more time on "warrior" training, and for the sith I think their training doctrines are the reason we don't see many double bladed lightsabers: plenty make them and gets themselves killed with it in training duels.
