The other benefit a lightsaber has over a normal sword is you don’t need to worry at all about edge alignment, making spinning even that much more effective. The downside is you need to control the blades much more to keep them away from your torso, so give and take. True but also somewhat not. I've also done a bit of dueling with a double-bladed saber, and while the larger hilt is an opening it's only really exploitable if you're not spacing yourself properly. A double-bladed saber or for that matter any exotic saber type with a longer hilt needs different spacing from a conventional saber. Problem is that a Bo staff doesn't directly translate to a double-ended weapon with only a small grip area. With a Bo you have a full range of motion with your hand placement along the entire length of the staff. Quite a bit still does carry over, though, it's just not a direct one-to-one.

Impractical for the individual to carry, not overall useful in a battlefield scenario, but capable of holding off multiple attackers in such a manner that a single person can hold a choke point[s] long enough for the important party to retreat/reform ranks. If I were to make a Twinblade based on using Shad's double-longsword prop as a point of reference:
    - Lengthen the handle grip by two hand lengths, and shorten the blades by an equal amount. (Same total length.)
    - Using custom made pommels that latch to each other, and can be held together with a double-pronged metal pin for stability.
This way, you have two separate long-grip arming swords that can be sheathed on your waist belt for ease of transport. In a sudden attack, you can draw one of the blades to use immediately, or if you have time you can connect the two blades to make the twinblade.

I think the double blades never catch up because the portability of normal sidearm trumped it, and if you want to use a polearm, just get a real polearm with greater reach. For a personal combat melee weapon, this thing will be hard to carry and cumbersome to draw. There is a reason why Katana is popular alternative choice to long sword type of side arm despite the fact that it has less reach, the quick draw. This thing just fly against everything a small scale personal combat side arm needs to function in that setting and outclassed in battlefields by normal polearms

You should read Darth Bane: Path of Destruction. There's a section in the book that dives a little bit into lightsaber combat, & explains a little bit about why some of the sith used the double bladed lightsaber.
This is a rough explanation since I haven't read the book in a while, but it basically says that fighting with a double bladed lightsaber is both harder to learn & far deadlier to an inexperienced individual than the normal single bladed lightsaber. However, because of how few people use it & understand how to counter its fighting style with unique attacks & blocks, when used by a very experienced individual it actually ends up being far deadlier & far more unpredictable to opponents than the very common single bladed fighting styles

Darth Maul's sword would be INCREDIBLY useful and deadly, but only if he used it right (which he didn't).
The enormous tactical advantage of his blades are that he can turn either of them on and off at will. He could fight in a standard sword vs sword duel and while parrying his opponent's strike, activate the other end of his blade and slice through his opponent who didn't realize that blade was ever there in the first place. Or while making a swing in one direction, deactivate that blade an activate the blade from the opposite end.
There are so many opportunities to strike an enemy with what would be a damn near impossible to parry strike.

LittleRedRhuari RRR jedi and sith have, to a varying degree, the ability to sense the future. Because if this, they would likely be masters of bluffing - exposing themselves deliberately with the intention of countering the strike to the exposed area. When you take into account the years of combat training, fast reflexes and the ability to sense the future, it would be an act of suicide to strike at an already exposed area of the opponent. Instead, it would make more sense to strike at the opponents blade with the intention of creating an opening yourself, as your opponent would not anticipate this and would be much less likely to counter the strike. To emphasise the importance of anticipation and surprise in a lightsaber duel, you only have to look at how Darth Maul died. He attempted to strike obi wan with the same pummel strike he used to kill Qui-Gon, and because this strike was so predictable, obi was was able to perfectly counter his strike and killed Darth maul.

"In combat, your mind tries to keep track of each blade separately, effectively doubling the number of possibilities. But the two blades are connected: by knowing the location of one, you are automatically aware of the location of the other. In actual practice, the double-bladed lightsaber is more limited than the traditional lightsaber. It can do more damage, but it is less precise. It requires longer, sweeping movements that don't transition well into a quick stab or thrust. Because the weapon is difficult to master, however, few among the Jedi - or even the Sith - understand it. They don't know how to attack or defend effectively against it. That gives those of us who use it an advantage over most of our opponents."

Agreed. If you are used to fight against single weapon, or even one in each hand, this would have massive suprise element especially if user has "mastered" using this. I belive that if we take let's say 5cm from each swords lenght, and put it in the grip, while still keeping crossguards or adding something like those knots in messers for extra protection, not only would it be really, really cool, it would also be one of the best weapons in it's class. In Star Wars, Ray Park (Maul) also used that spear grip for most of his moves, it was only during certain shots and poses he uses the two hands down grip. As he's an Olympic Wushu champion, and like the martial arts Wuhsu is based upon, they use the up-down grip.

I actually went to a "lightsaber school" for a few years. Basically we fought with long plastic sticks, and the guys who founded the school used kendo, fencing and the 7 styles of combat that are used in star wars as inspiration to create this martial art.
We did have double lightsabers, one guy even made it his main training weapon. I have tried it a few times, and honestly with a bit of practice it is a great weapon. If that was a true metal sword, the weight would probably be very unpractical, but when fighting someone who has a simple lightsaber, you just have so much more speed and options, so it is actually really good. It is also especially good when fighting two or more opponents at once, because you can attack on multiple sides without having to swing your sword the whole way.
I'm also pretty sure it would be useless against a shield + sword user, so that's probably another reason why theses weapons never really existed.
So I think your analysis is on point here ! I think it is a great dueling weapon, or when fighting without shields !

I think it's only barely a polearm on the condition that it is just two swords screwed together. If both blades share the same longsword/hand-and-a-half handle, rather than two full-length longsword handles, the user cannot really adjust their grip to meaningfully extend the reach. An example of this would be the double-bladed sword (based on a spear from Japanese mythology) of Izanagi-no-Okami from the Persona series. In that weapon, the handle only has enough space for a typical longsword grip (from the user in question, at least). There simply isn't enough "pole" to give it the advantages of a polearm.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 2 роки тому +1

Potentially your own brothers in arms could become at risk from strikes if they are behind or beside you... You would be having to gauge that to a greater degree which would be a distraction from what was happening in front of you, your main assailant. With a single blade you have 1 pointy end , much easier to control in terms of close quarters where every one is bundled together in a mass of combat. I may be wrong, but just a thought. Bane's lightsaber teacher Kasim used a double lightsaber like Maul and when Bane asked Kasim why, he explained it is a psyhological effect, one thinks of the 2 blades as 2 seperate blades, while in reality they are connected, so when you know where 1 balde is, you automatically know where the other one is.

Super Marijus the problem with a double sided lightsaber is that they aren’t sharp, and they don’t have an edge, they are HOT, and have to be held in the way Darth Maul does, which is very limited movement. In the video you can see a more effective technique, with a greater range of movement, but a lot of strikes require the second blade to touch the body, this couldn’t happen with a lightsaber or you’d kill yourself.
An advantage of the lightsaber we didn’t see is that the blades can be turned off, meaning with training you could turn off the blade as it was about to hit you, and turn it back on when it was safely past your body, but at that point to not get yourself killed you’d need to take into account:
      Your opponents strike
      Your defending blade
      Retracting your second blade
The retraction speed of your second blade
      Extending your second blade
The extension speed of your second blade
And then the same again with any strike you make.
So, you either limit your movements or risk your life to your own blade - it’s much more practical as a sword than a lightsaber.

The thing is with a sword you have to specifically strike on the edge. A lightsaber has no edge so that is not a problem. That means the double bladed lightsaber can be wielded more like a staff. Another factor to consider is the weight. With a sword most of the weight comes from the steel blades. The blade on a lightsaber is completely weightless, which means the only weight on a lightsaber is the weight of the hilt. So a double bladed lightsaber can be wielded much faster and more effortlessly than a double bladed sword.

@@jlokison This bullshit has been explained to be... well, bullshit, by Shad when he made the video about his character.
Also, given how he melees them, his armor should've rusted off a while ago if it's so sticky and corrosive, yet we only see it repaired after the ogre (and maybe the troll king? I don't remember), and that was because it got smashed.
Edit: Oh, and if you don't bother with the screws, lengthen the handle to reach further than the shoulder, and shorten the blades accordingly (no need to have more than you are cutting with), and maybe change the tang to a cap like with other polearms. Boom, not much more expensive than a longsword.

Oh, and the blade needs to be double edged, or the fast attacking thing is lost.

He don't use fancy stuff to avoid "teaching" the goblins how to use them... Then again could you imagine a (normal) goblin with a small goblin-sized doublesword, so cute.

UA-cam at 5 AM: Is the double bladed sword / lightsaber a good weapon?

  • @johannschmidt3389
    @johannschmidt3389 3 роки тому +1

The biggest weakness of the double bladed lightsaber was that the hilt was a big target. There was a dark Jedi who converted his standard hilt lightsaber into a double bladed one, the smaller one handed grip nullified this weakness. I'd like to see a double bladed one handed rapier.
