We finally had some good weather, which allowed us to get out and do a little service.
Emotional damaaage! Lol love it. In hindsight I should probably have used the Mann filters as they're not that much more. Great vid buddy
Also, your engine bay is amazingly clean (compared to mine)!
It’s only done about 85,000 miles, plus I gave it a blast with the pressure washer last time I cleaned the car.
Well done, great video, love the commentary😂😂😂
Hi there Ben,
that was interesting video, and better out than in !
keep the videos coming, Paul.
Great video. I’m going to show my daughter this as an example of good cooperation making jobs easier. She’s pretty keen to get on the tools with me and no better place to start learning about motors than on servicing my old petrol V8 l322!
Nice work Ben!
Nice work mate! I’m looking at a tdv8 l322 tomorrow… hopefully it’s as good as the chap says it is. Watched all your vids on yours for inspiration.
All the best
So how good was it? Enough good that money changed hands? Range Rovers is a bit addictive. I'm just on my second one now, buying one last Saturday. Quite dumb when looking at the prices at the forecourts, but...
A smear of silicone grease on the grommets helps to smooth the air box back back in and makes the air pipes fit a bit easier.
Yes, didn’t think of that. Will bear it in mind next time.
Good old Molycote
Great video, very informative, far better when you can see what's happening! According to the FFRR online forum, there's a second engine oil drain plug at the rear of the sump that should also be drained after the first. Apparently, if it gets bunged up with sludge, it can do unpleasant things to the turbos!
Yes I did know about that other sump plug, must do it next oil change.
Well done mate nice job you are inspirational doing all that in a wheelchair.
Love the oily rag mod 😂😂
Yes the oily rag, how much horse power do you reckon?
@@Bensgarage got to make a difference especially now the air box is fitted properly 👍
buen trabajo
Thanks Ben..,gr8 vid and explains loads. I have the same car, it’s told me how do this this myself plus Sams videos too. Can I ask? On your test drive afterwards you mentioned no black smoke from rear. If you did what would this mean and how could you fix? Is it normal for some smoke to be seen on acceleration? Cheers 👍
I always expect some smoke, especially from a diesel. And normally, once I let the car warm up and give it some welly, I do notice a bit of a Smokey haze at the rear, this time there was none. So the service has cleaned things up a bit. Quite often on the TDV8, if there is black smoke, most of the time, especially under load, it can be a small hole in the intercooler hoses. I changed both my top intercooler hoses for silicone ones (I did a video on that) as a precautionary measure.
Just done mine today, I watched this very video a few month ago... since I knew it was messy beforehand I sucked 7 litres out of the dipstick and got the rest from the plugs, some nasty shit left in the bottom.
When I do the fuel filter, I usually unclip the fuel hoses and bring the whole bracket with me to the bench.
I ended up doing that, but didn't catch it on video.
Hi Ben, great video.
Could you tell me where to find some more information on the 'Brembo not as standard' situation? Also, was this only on the 3.6 or the 4.4 as well? (so any TDV8 basically in 2010)
Many Thanks
I believe it was the first of the face lift models, late 2009/2010 and only the 3.6. Once the 4.4 came out, they were all fitted with Brembo again. You might find the information on the 2010 onwards workshop manual.
@@Bensgarage Ah, I thought that might be the case. I couldn't find any info on the 4.4 at all. So you're right, must be the 3.6 only. Thanks for the response. Appreciate it - stay awesome!
Hi. Thx fir the video. At what suspension settings can this car be lifted on a workshop lift?
Pulled this from the manual:
Vehicle Lift
The air suspension ECU will inhibit all height changes and corrections if it detects all four corner heights are greater
than 90 mm. This is interpreted as the vehicle being on a wheels free car lift with all wheels hanging freely. In this
situation, the corner heights will not change when air is released from the air springs. The system will remain inhibited
until any of the following conditions exist:
All four corner heights fall below 90 mm
The rotary switch is moved to the 'UP' or 'DOWN' position.
Vehicle speed rises to greater than 25 mph (40 km/h) for longer than 3 seconds.
Vehicle Jack
The air suspension ECU will inhibit all height changes and corrections if it detects a corner lowering too slowly for
more than 3 seconds. This is interpreted as the corner identified as moving too slowly being supported on a jack. In
this situation, the corner height will not change when air is released from the air spring because the jack acts as a
mechanical prop. The system will remain inhibited until any of the following conditions exist:
The height of the wheel identified as lowering too slowly, returns to the height where jacking was detected.
The rotary switch is moved to the 'UP' or 'DOWN' position.
Vehicle speed rises to greater than 25 mph (40 km/h) for longer than 3 seconds
@@Bensgarage wow, thank You!
question ben why dont you fill the filter housing with oil before you top up engine with oil ?
Something I have never done, and never had a problem. Fuel filters on the other hand, especially the older motors that were a nightmare to bleed, I would probably fill with fuel.
Strange but my air box wasn’t clipped in either AND the rubber bung was out of place too! Maybe the same mechanic serviced it?
Maybe, but did he/she leave an oily rag in there.
I note your 3.6tdv8 has additional air grills into the wing under the bonnet, similar to the 4.4tdv8. My 59plate 3.6tdv8 Westminster doesn't have those. Do they make any difference to the air flow intake?
I have no idea. I think my 2010(facelift) was probably a test for the 4.4, as they fitted the new engine soon after, and I think there are a few things on my 3.6 that wasn’t on the earlier versions.
great video, how much you pay for the air fileter and the pollen filter and where from, thanks in advance
Not sure exactly how much, they were not that expensive. I got them from Autodoc.
@@Bensgarage thanks ben and keep up the videos
Hi Ben I've got a 2008 3.6 v8 but radio screen just has the logo and flashing light on the button tried everything I've seen on UA-cam any other ideas mate you seem to know your stuff 😀 many thanks
Have a read through this thread on the FFRR forum, a guy had the same problem. www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic14914.html?highlight=radio+showing+logo
@@Bensgarage thanks fot that will have a look 👍
Yes that indent is the same oil filter fitted to 1.6d ford engine. A pain in the butt.
Hi. Nice video? On 26:23 i hear some noise, like works hand pump without lubrication. I have same :) maybe you know what is it? :)
I just assumed it is something to do with the air suspension, never really looked into.
What year is this L322 ? Nice to see you are doing the service yourself, Land Rover in Agen wanted telephone number prices when I enquired there, and they will only fit parts they supply, I will service mine when the temperature drops below 35. Watch out for speed cameras, I got 2 tickets just driving very slowly up to Bordeaux recently, and I thought I was creeping along, the Range Rover speed is very deceptive. Stay safe Chris B.
Yes, I know just what you mean with the speed issue. The car is just too smooth, and you don’t realise how fast you are going. I would never have the service done anywhere else, our 2010 TDV8 had been main dealer serviced(before we bought it), and even the experts left a dirty rag in my air box.
@@Bensgarage And they left the rubber trunking disconnected! If they had known about the rag they would have charged extra! That is why I prefer to do the job myself, although changing the alternator on a TD5 is not something I look forward to in this temperature! Chris B.
hello ben can you help me out, i have 3.6 08 plate l322 the transfer box do i do a separate oil change to that, or is the gearbox oil all part of the transfer box ? as my mechanic is telling me its all running on the same oil so all i need to do is drain gear box oil, im thinking its 2 separate oil changes ?
No, two separate things, oil in the gearbox and different oil in the transfer box. You might need a new mechanic, it’s pretty clear when you look underneath. Check out Sam’s motor and machine channel, where he serviced his car and shows changing the transfer box oil.
@@Bensgarage ok big thanks and i got a land rover mechanic, lol i knew it had to be done im thinking he did not want to do it so that i had problems later on, i will ask him again he has taken me for a mug before on a service and he is doing the job all again with me alongside him watching, i had to give him the chance to put his mistake right, i paid for a service and nothing was done i knew this as i checked the air filter, and he never changed it, so that told me he did nothing, apart from plug his computer in to clear the service message, anyway big thanks ben for you advice
@@stephenadams9767 if you can use a spanner, it’s not too difficult to do yourself. Plus you know it’s been done, while saving lots of money. If my Mrs can change a cam belt on a Toyota hilux (there is a video) then anyone can service a Range Rover.
ben what size socket for the oil filter please ?
Not sure off the top of my head, but you can download the appropriate manuals over on my website (free), it should say in there.
@@Bensgarage thanks mate
Hey Ben Is the socket for the oil filter 32mm thanks ?
Sounds about right.
@@Bensgarage what did you use ?
@@I_J77 I have a 3/4 drive socket set, so really big sockets. One of those fit right on. You could also use a very large adjustable spanner.
If same as ford, 27mm
Sorry - Don't want to be a party pooper but did you do the rear sump drain as well? It drains so more oil from beneath the turbos and is supposed to help avoid the return pipes getting clogged. It is a pain to get to but is recommended. There's a useful video from Atlantic British covering this. Good luck
No, I did know about that, I’ll do it on the next oil change.
Are there 2 sump plugs on a 3.6 tdv8?
Yes, there are two, one for the sump oil and the other for the turbo circuit. I will drain both next time.
@@Bensgarage awesome, wasn't sure. I've got mine to do in a few months, great video!
@@Pyrotec_nick it’s towards the back of the engine, I didn’t get far enough under to reach it. Workshop manual will probably show you where it is.
Hey Ben me again what's the turbo circuit what that for thanks is it best to do that 2 thanks ?
@@I_J77 somewhere at the back of the engine is a second bung, probably in the manual. I’m not near the computer at the moment, but if you haven’t got the manual you can download it from my website(free).
Beware Autodoc send the parts from Germany, and in the UK that means delays and additional cost! Sometimes GSF and Eurocarparts can be cheaper.
There are plenty of companies out there, some good and some bad. I use the two I mentioned, as I am in France and they just don’t do car parts properly. They are starting to cotton on, but motor factors are few and far between.
@@Bensgarage When in France I use Oscaro with some success! I say some, because as you know the French logistics system is flaky to say the least! Autodoc is OK because Germany to France is customs free of course. There are some motor factors in France, a couple of decent ones in Perigueux but they tend to stock parts for the popular cars in France, Citroen, Renault etc. not JLR for some reason!! Norauto is just a French version of Halfords! Pre Brexit I could either bring stuff out or get it delivered at slightly higher cost, but not now! Some companies won't even parts deliver to Europe!
3.6 tdv8 has two sump plugs
Correct, it does. Next oil change I shall use both.
You know there's 2 drain plugs the other one just to the left of the main drain it clears the turbo oil feed pipe
Yes I did know about that one, just forgot to do it that time.
Now I see why there are so many sucky up the dipstick videos on here!
Oil ages and degrades over time and mileage hence 12 months or XX miles 👍😎😁
We are finally getting on top of projects here, and yes I should have serviced it earlier. But the plan is to now keep all our cars and machinery serviced yearly. 👍
Sometimes better to use normal oil rather than synthetic, especially if not used regularly.
they use those filters in a perkins 1006 engine must be cheaper that Land rover
2007 3.6 v8 - 306,000 km 🤣
I sold mine last Saturday. 2008 tdv8 - 402,000 km. Replaced her with an SDV8 from 2013, with 174,000 km on the clock.
Put a piece of cardboard to deflect the oil as the German gentleman does on his Land Rover
They should make them all with dip sticks. There has been problems with the electronic sump pick up system and results in the sump having to be removed to repair. Just another gimmick by a land rover geek, not good engineering. Probably the same people that designed the problemmatic v6 Diesel engine. Broken crankshafts etc. Although watching Barum Engines that could be they don’t balance the crankshafts with the fluid flywheel assembled, hence the failures. Ref Barum.
Can't blame Land Rover for the design, that's down to Ford. I'm glad my 3.6 has a dip stick, I like the old school approach of checking your oil.
