Thanks for the tip on getting the batteries out. I had no problem opening up the battery compartment, but the online manual didn't say that I had to push on the plastic part to get the batteries out. I was almost at my wits end, then I found this video. A big thank you for pointing out pushing on the plastic to get the batteries out. No more annoying chirping for me!

Omg man thank you! I didn't even realize there were plastic tabs behind them to allow you to push the batteries out. They were very tight, used a plastic tool to try to pry them out and then saw your video... So much easier

Thank you. Just purchased two new units and unable to open battery door/tray. Thought it must be defective. Then decided to check second unit and found it to be the same. Therefore presumed that was normal, but afraid to pull harder for fear of damaging unit. Reread instructions but again found no help. As a last resort decided to chreck UA-cam and found your post. It explained exactly how to open the door/tray and clarified it needed much force to open it. Following your instruction and having gained the confidence to really pull all worked well. Thank you so much.

Like others, I could open the drawer but I couldn't figure out how to get the battery out. I felt so frustrated and helpless... I couldn't even change the battery in a smoke detector and I'd have to ask my husband to do it. Well your video helped me. Thank you for taking the time to make it.

Hi it would be helpful to say what kind of batteries/cells are used. I replaced mine about 3 months ago and it's needing to be replaced again. It seems that one needs to use long-life lithium batteries.

SInce the light never glows, isn't it likely that the replacement batteries are weak or almost dead? (or at least one of them is weak or dead?)

Thank you so much! The link for the manual let me know about a feature that was extremely useful to me. You can silence the low battery chirp for eight hours by pressing the test button until it chirps. (which gives you some time until you can change the battery) It worked like a charm. Very handy indeed at two a.m.!

Thank you for making this video.
The instructions that come in the package are confusing, and the diagrams are much too small. I was afraid to apply enough force for fear of breaking the plastic.
The instructions refer to locking pins, but don’t make it clear that there are no pins installed when it comes from the factory. I was concerned that pins might be keeping it closed...another reason I was reluctant to apply more force.
Finally, the instructions refer to tabs that you press to remove batteries, but I couldn’t find where they were, with the tiny diagram...I don’t usually carry a magnifying glass!
Once you see it done, as in your video, the battery install/removal is trivial. Shame on First Alert!! They should pay you!!!

I just got a couple of these, and yes it does seem like you are going to break it trying to open the battery slot. I'm sure some people do... Instructions are pretty crummy

  • @lukeofernandez

It is confounding how unintuitive it was to open the battery compartment.. The indentation on the compartment signals to users they should pull directly out from the center or perhaps up. But nothing indicates one should pull sideways (which is probably why so many of us found ourselves looking at this video). The handle needs to signal to the user how it needs to be pulled or pushed. This one does not. It's such an elementary design mistake one wonders how it got past this company's R&D. At the very least put a sticker near the compartment with a hint. Or as a last resort put a few lines in the documentation. But all that is missing. It's a design and documentation failure that is so complete one wonders whether they were purposefully trying to make the battery compartment difficult to open.
