My husband passed away last year & I was in panic mode when I heard a noise in my condo. I followed the sound or chirp & found it downstairs in basement. This video was a life saver very explanatory. Thank you very much!!
I actually had a customer who did that once. I installed the smoke detectors and a year later I got a call from her. She said one was chirping. I showed up later that day and she had taken a hammer to the one chirping. I replaced the one she had smashed and replaced the the batteries to the other 3. That was that. Thanks for taking the time to help the world with this. Your tip that the battery would only fit one way was excellent. This wasn't mentioned on two other smoke alarm videos I watched.
Woke up this morning at 4am with this chirping going off because my apartment complex is without power. I didn’t have a replacement battery, but when you said to hold the reset button to use up any residual power, that was all I needed to know. Now I can go back to sleep in peace and deal with the power when I wake back up, thank you!
I'm assuming that you are talking about identifying the correct circuit breaker because it's not marked with "smoke detectors" on it. The only thing to do is to get an assistant to watch the green light on the detector and then turn off each breaker one at a time. Have the assistant tell you when the green light goes off. Be sure and mark the label area in your panel box before you put your tools away. You might need it again someday.
fun fact: batteries produce electricity with a chemical reaction that slows down as the battery gets colder. so in a house with a setback thermostat that allows the house to cool off at night, the voltage output of the battery will be at its lowest at about 2:00 in the morning. then when the thermostat warms the house up in the morning, the voltage will increase, and the chirp will stop - until the next night. TL/DR: it's not your imagination.
It was ringing constantly and I haven’t cooked all day and I couldn’t make it stop with a broom so because I have complaining neighbours I called the Fire Brigade (Central London very quick, helpful and cheerful) who stopped it but said they were not allowed to remove the battery. At this point I found you and switched it off at the mains and with a hammer and a screwdriver managed to get it off the very high ceiling and remove the battery. Peace at last! Cats can stop running around like crazy. Tomorrow I will follow the rest of your instructions or call the landlord. Well, I had to buy a new unit, but SO happy they still carry same model. Though I almost bought 3 other's that were wrong model as the "helper" at the hardware store did not notice either. But, wow, I'm so much smarter now thanks to THIS video!!! I couldn't get the wired connection unplugged, so I thought maybe it wasn't supposed to be! SO glad to see how he did everything. Gave me confidence. And now no more sleepless nights!!!! I didn't even notice a model # on the back. I'll try to go clean the others now that I have some spray. Mine were same year as his and I've had them 7+ years.
I had one of these hard wired models that I could not kill. I took it down and removed the batteries. The thing would not stop chirping. I took a hammer to it and threw it in the trash. Still chirping. I pulled the trash can to the curb; still chirping. As far as I know, it may still be chirping in the landfill. I replaced it with battery operated units. So far, so good. So frustrating.
I can regularly hear a smoke alarm chirping when I go to the landfill. Many people seem to find the hammer option to be the best solution! They have models with a built in 10 year battery. the battery lasts as long as the detectors lifespan and then you chuck it out and get a new one. no chirping for 10 years!
I bought 4 smoke detectors with a 10 year battery by First Alert. I only wished I would have read their reviews first. After 18 months the detectors started going off in the middle of the night and we tried everything to turn them off. Horrible product!
Thanks so much for covering this thoroughly; a little different angle is dealing with a chirping smoke alarm in larger premises with more than 10 alarms, that are hard wired and integrated with fire alarm monitoring and connected to the fire department. Ours have a 3 volt 123 lithium battery nested inside the sensor, which can be changed out by turning the sensor counter-clockwise to remove from baseplate. Just a word of caution that with our integrated system, a removal of the unit from its base does trigger an inhouse alarm mode at the control panel that will not go into full alarm mode and can be cancelled at the control panel.
Really helpful video. Gives so much more info than just straightforward battery/reset advice on other vids. Got ours reworking by following the step 3 advce on our battery smoke alarm.(We had changed the battery and it was still chirping). Also the advice on lifespan and finding the date of the model. Thanks!
Same but mine was chirping for 45 minutes we called the fire department and they helped us turn it off and all heads are killing all of us right now because this happened write now
Can you help please? I don't know if I need to switch off a switch on the fusebox. I don't have a switch labelled smoke detector on there. I have ones labelled: lighting, lighting, sockets, sockets, shower, cooker. On the left of those is 2joined together red switches/switch saying main switch. It's a very cheap, 15 year old, basic smoke alarm. How do you know if you have to flick a switch on the fusebox, please!? I have pressed the hush button for 20 seconds but it's not resolved the chirping. Would I electrocute myself by not pressing a switch on fusebox off, then twisting plastic cover off to see which battery I need to order, please!? Is it likely to be a 9volt? To stop it chirping temporarily, can I turn the plastic cover anticlockwise, safely without flicking a switch off on the fusebox!? (I think circuitboard is same as fusebox, isn't it)!?
Thanks so much for this video! I couldn't figure out why my unit would not stop chirping! I ended up having to take it down and blow it out and adjust the connectors in order for it to stop!! You are best!
THANK YOU very much for solving my smoke alarm issues. Mine are hard wired and yes they are to OLD! All SEVEN need replacing but are still functioning. They are now #1 on my to do list. Once again, THANK YOU!!!!
If you’re too aggressive with the compressed air you may create condensation on the sensor and you won’t like your life until it dries. The lithium batteries are a life/sleep saver.
Thanks so much for making this amazing tutorial. 👏🏾 It’s 3am”; woke up to the annoying beeps; 😖 located which detector it was; got on a ladder and pushed the reset button on the detector and so far so good: the beep stopped… Back to sleep 😴 now; I’ll inspect it closer when I wake up later.
I used your video to help on a job. Tried everything you showed but still heard the chirp. After removing the new detector and removing it from the room still heard a chirp. I was almost convinced there was a detector in the attic. Asked the customer if there was a detectors in the dresser. Wouldn’t you know she had just bought a new CO detector and put the old detector in the dresser. Found the chirp. Anyway you might make a follow up video on how to find a chirping detector even one that may be hiding in a dresser. Great channel.
Excellent video. I followed your advice and found that the positive post had battery acid on the blade. I got some baking soda and distilled water to clean the post with a qu-tip. Fixed my problem.
Thank you for posting this very helpful video! You clearly and concisely give us the steps to correct my wired alarm chirping issue. I feel confident that I will be able to address this issue without having to go through the frustration of finding an electrician that I could actually book within a month's time! One very minor suggestion: when you show the back of the device for the expire date - perhaps freeze the image or hold the camera steady and use a pen/pencil to point at the expire date. This would be helpful as some of us aren't too eagle-eyed to catch it in the video! Thanks again!
MOST EXCELLENT sanity restorer! I live alone and have about 30 seconds worth of patience w these things. Im w the commenter about the sledge hammer only Ive used the broom handle. Wish I'd seen this clear, concise video before I destroyed 3 of them! Your diction isnt muffled, slurred or too fast and you were to the point not using terms one has to find another video to understand. You succinctly told me how to step by step fix the problem without telling me the history of smoke detectors, the importance of having one, statisical data on how many have died without one and thank you so much for not adding some loud, wacky-ass background music! I wanted to fix the chirp not learn how to build a new model and launch a start-up company. Many thanks! Ps Do you have a vid about fixing one "someone" may have yanked out of the ceiling at 4:12 a.m.?
Thank you for your excellent video! I’m not very mechanical, but your directions were clear and concise. Thankfully, all I had to do was replace the battery, but I now know what to do in case that doesn’t work 🤗
I appreciate your video. I didn’t want to try one step and then try another step, so I blew the unit clean, replaced the battery, and then I noticed that one of the battery sensor wasn’t making contact. Thanks, again your video was much appreciated.
Your video was very helpful. Straight to the point. I hate most DIY videos because they talk too much. I'm a 63 year old female. Your video helped because my smoke detector didn't stop with just the pressing of the button. Other video said press for 10 secs. yours said 30. Inside was dusty too. I sprayed the dust out and held button longer. No more beeping. So thank you.
Thank you!! Changing the 9v worked! I thought mine was battery operated and I was very confused when I took it down and sad hard wires! This was very helpful!!
Woke me up at 3:30 AM. I searched for the source of the chirp around the house but didn't realize the beep was coming from inside my room. I tried to ignore it for a half hour but then I grabbed my phone and did a search. This video came up and thank God! Being 4 AM, I could not go to the store to buy a 9 Volt so I decided I'd wait until morning and go buy a battery then. But the chirp was so loud and it wouldn't let me sleep if I waited until morning. Then I remembered that I had a 9 Volt in my car from when I was going to play guitar at my church! My guitar uses a 9 Volt battery and I had bought one about six months ago and it was just riding around with me in the car all this time! So then I had to decide if I was going to go outside to my car at 4 in the morning or wait until the sun came up. But I figured since God had already gave me the battery, and the noise wasn't going to let me sleep, that I should probably swap it out right away. And thank God now the loud chirp is gone. Thanks to God for giving me the battery and thank God for this video!
But God didn’t give you the battery, or the video, you got the battery yourself, and you looked up the video this guy made. I’m not saying “god” doesn’t exist, but quit thanking him for every little thing😂
@@zevin5191 God did create the battery by giving people the skills to know how to make it and fix it. God made doctors too and he made people like this chap who took the time to help others with the same problem. Most people wouldn't care less about giving this information out.
Thanks for this video. It helped a lot. Of course the chirping started in the middle of the night. Tried 2 new batteries and then googled for help. Turns out the mfr date was 2006!!! I think it's time for a replacement. So I'll be watching that video next. This video gave me exactly what I needed to know and nothing more. I really appreciated that at 3am!
THANK YOU! This is something my ex husband used to fix. I was a little freaked out when it started chirping at 11:30 pm and I just layed down to sleep. It was the battery thank goodness and your video was perfect!
When my mom was still living I would stop by regularly to see if everything was OK. On one particular visit I heard the smoke alarm make a chirp. She immediately said that the noise had been driving her crazy and had even sprayed it with Raid to kill the bug that had gotten inside. I told her the chirping was not a bug but a bad battery. To be fair it does sound like a cricket. My wife and I still chuckle about the bug in the smoke alarm to this day.
Well, that video saved me a LOT of trouble. Thank you very much. The thing had been beeping since early in the morning. The battery compartment faced a very close wall. I'd never have known the battery compartment was there if I hadn't known to look for it. Problem solved.
One of the best troubleshooting video I came across. Unfortunate for me, I had to twist the battery connection to compete the circuit. But after several attempts, I finally managed to get rid of the chirp noise.
I hate listening to a smoke alarm chirping once every minute, especially in the middle of the night, but I'd rather get up and do something about it than to have to put up with it all night
It’s 11 at night, I’m freshly fucking 20, never changed a fire alarm or even heard the dreaded beep before in my goddamn life, I’m nice and toasty tucked into bed ready to start passing out and then it beeps… and beep… AND IT KEEPS BEEPING. First result on google was this video and blessed be the angels above you have the exact make and model fire alarm that I do. God gave me his toughest challenge today but forgot that I am his luckiest soldier. I LIVE ANOTHER DAY ALL THANKS TO YOU!!! PRAISE BE!!!
The 30 second reset resolved our issue. I also removed the cover & used some air in a can to dust the inside. Surprisingly, there wasn't a lot of dust.
Thanks for your very helpful video. We have a 1st alert photo electric detector. It's less than a year old and started chirping intermittently. it would only chirp for an hour or so and then stop for a few days. AT 4 this morning it started again. I replaced the battery but it continued to chirp every minute. I did clear the charge, per your instructions, and it stopped. Just to be safe, I'm replacing the unit. I like that I can just unplug it from the system. The new one will just plug in. Next time I will just unplug it even if it is the middle of the night. These problems have gone on for years and you would think the manufacturers would have got these issues resolved by now. I know some people who just yanked them down from the ceiling and threw the units as far as they could. Do you think uninstalled alarms could repel skunks?
Thank you for your tips! It helped stop the chirping. And taking off the housing, I noticed the 9 V battery connectors were a little wonky. I reposition them to make a better connection. But I also had to release the built-up chirps. I think that was the main culprit. Thanks a bunch! I’m going to subscribe!
got home from work, noticed the beep, tried everything, nothing worked, put the old “dead” battery back in cuz fuck it and BOOM, it worked, turns out those little metal tongs werent sticking out enough against the old battery and now its fixed, thank you so much
A good reminder is to always check the date in the store when purchasing. Hopefully the form factor of a replacement will be the same as an original so it just plugs in.
when I worked at Menards ( a midwest based home center chain), I always told people at the ten year mark to bring one of their old detectors in so we could try to match the wiring harness.
Followed all of your instructions all the way to step 3. Does the brand of battery really make a difference? I have Amazon basics ones here and my battery tester says they are fresh. We put one in there and got the chirping to stop for at least 5 minutes. Suddenly it's started up again. Unit is clean and I bent the contacts back to ensure a good connection with the battery. House was built in Summer 2016. It's a combo smoke / carbon monoxide alarm so I guess it's ready to be trashed?
It tells you on the device what the different chirps could be. Battery. End of life etc. I'm a fire and life safety tech so I see these kinds of things everyday. Test your detectors. Change your batteries at the same time. Replace faulty devices. Don't ever disconnect and leave yourself unprotected.
Thank you for the help from the video. I had no idea how to get the battery out, it was easier than I thought it would be. I changed the batteries and reset the smoke alarm the chirping was fixed.
May God bless you for making this video. Thank you for not going on and on. You got straight to the point and you are clear and concise. Blessings to you always 💯
Hi, I replaced 5 smoke detectors but one wouldn't stop beeping! It was the reason I replace them! After replacing batteries and purchasing new batteries, it continued to beep. I followed the suggestions of several programs, yours included! There has been smoke in the air lately from wild fires, and I thought they probably detect smoke on a very small concentration level! I ran my air circulating system on my gas furnace and it stopped beeping after about an hour! When all else fails, try this!
Very thorough! I have an older unit (10+ years old) and a new 9 volt didn't solve the problem. Before watching your video I had an idea about 'dust' in the unit. Standing on a ladder (bad for a 74 yr. old gal!) I used a toothbrush to brush the inside metal part. It solved my problem but after watching your video I KNOW that I need to replace all of them in my 18 yr. old house! Thanks so much!
After doing 2 out of 3, on the 3rd time I changed the one that was being farthest from my bedroom it still sounded very low but my “buddy” it blew all night, so I had to replace it with the new one.😂 Like you said it’s probably because it’s old, because the house is almost 20 years old. Thank you very much Sir for sharing. 👍
Thank you so much. As a woman living alone I was about to call an electrician but decided to check UTube. I didn't realize that it had a battery since it is hard wired, so you solved my problem and saved me.an e!ectrician's bill. Thanks a million.
1 am chirping on both fire alarms. It looked like the circuit breaker of ours was connected to the main breaker of the apartment. I climbed up, grabbed a plastic straw, and blew around and in the hole...it worked lol. Thank you! (Now i hear the next door's apartment chirping as well 😂)
Awesome video. I loved the fact that even though everything was not fixed on the first try, in the end you succeeded. I really appreciated the troubleshooting steps. Thank you.
I had the added fun of single-sided deafness, which, for those who haven't had the pleasure, removes your ability to determine what direction a sound is coming from-it seems to come from everywhere! But I narrowed it down to two units, one inside the bedroom door, the other in the hall just outside the door, got batteries ready for both, then googled this fantastic video on how to get to it. The side-slot battery compartment on my units were so well concealed as to be invisible! At least at 4am it seemed that way :-|. So thanks, for a much-needed assist in the wee hours :).
Thank you for your video, I had to go all the way to step 3, and found that I will have to change it out by next year(I didn't know that!). First time home owner, so previously I just requested maintenance 😂, because of your video I was able to complete the fix on my lunch break!

It’s almost 3 in the morning, I’ve been up since 1:30, this video BETTER WORK BECAUSE IM ABOUT TO SCREAM
Same
Yes it’s annoying , just late at night .😮😮😮
So well articulated, thoughtful, and responsible,
Thank you for your excellent video! I’m not very mechanical, but your directions were clear and concise. Thankfully, all I had to do was replace the battery, but I now know what to do in case that doesn’t work 🤗
God Bless You!!!! I was about to go all Phoebe on this thing and beat it with the broomstick. Followed your instructions and got it fixed. Thank You
You’re good. 👍🏻 Thanks!
Too bad all smoke detector/co2 detectors aren’t manufactured under the same regulatory protocol.
My chirp stopped after step 2. Thank you so much for your help!!!
13% of the US population deals with 50% of the chirps 😮
at least 13% of the population hasn't seen this video.
Ironically you talk too much in your comment
Holding the Reset button down for 60 seconds did the trick for me.Of course no batteries and unplugged from hard wire connector.
Thank you very much.
Excellent how to video. I had to go to step 2, but everything went smoothly. Thank you for your guidance!
@@zevin5191 Let him thank whoever he wants
Thanks for reminding me my guitar has a battery for the smoke detector
@@zevin5191 you might be going to hell, I thank God for every breath I take
@@zevin5191 God did create the battery by giving people the skills to know how to make it and fix it.
The 6AM chirp woke me up, I'm so happy that this video can save me from hearing the chirping all day long.
THANK YOU! This is something my ex husband used to fix. I was a little freaked out when it started chirping at 11:30 pm and I just layed down to sleep.
It was the battery thank goodness and your video was perfect!
You bet, happy to help!
Im just gonna break the smoke detector and make it pieces
The only logical option buddy I'm 100% with you, it's fucking annoying.

Thank you so much! It has been driving me crazy for the whole week. Depressing that tab did it.
You're welcome!
So cute!
😆😆😆😆😆😆
😂 12:30 am waiting for the quickshop to reopen (closed for 5 minutes 🤬) so I can buy a dang battery. Ugh. This made me laugh.
Well, that video saved me a LOT of trouble. Thank you very much. The thing had been beeping since early in the morning. The battery compartment faced a very close wall. I'd never have known the battery compartment was there if I hadn't known to look for it. Problem solved.
Thank you!! I just followed your instructions and a new battery fixed the issue! Thank you for such a detailed video!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Happy to help!
Thank you for the chirp advice. Yeah I happened to throw the old detector out and replace with a new one. 1 down 5 more to replace
One of the best troubleshooting video I came across. Unfortunate for me, I had to twist the battery connection to compete the circuit. But after several attempts, I finally managed to get rid of the chirp noise.
Do you mean you just twisted the plastic casing anticlockwise!? Did you change the battery or just do that to stop it chirping!?
And also, did you flick a switch off on the fusebox/circuitboard, before you twisted the casing/battery connection!?
Thanks a lot. The last step worked for me & I didn’t had to spend on a replacement.
I hate listening to a smoke alarm chirping once every minute, especially in the middle of the night, but I'd rather get up and do something about it than to have to put up with it all night
Thanks so much! Silence for the first time in weeks, I had three all chirping
😂
Do you think uninstalled alarms could repel skunks?
thank you!! you just saved me at 4 am while my brother was asleep and my parents were out of town🙏
Here to help 👍
Blessings, John 3:16. Jesus loves you.
Amen!!!!!
Jesus wouldn't put up w this bullshit.
Amen 🙏🏾 ❤

Blowing out the dust did it, thanks a lot!
Excellent. Citing your video as a much, much better help for people in my community than the builder's "just replace the batteries".
i’m going to remove all my smoke detectors and then light my house on fire out of spite
This video is a life saver. 2nd step worked for me! The chirping was driving me crazy and my dog was freaking out haha 😬. Thank you!!!!
got home from work, noticed the beep, tried everything, nothing worked, put the old “dead” battery back in cuz fuck it and BOOM, it worked, turns out those little metal tongs werent sticking out enough against the old battery and now its fixed, thank you so much
Thanks! My question is why do they make it so not user friendly to align pretty much any detector when you put them back in?
Finally, that chirping had stop. Thanks dude.
A good reminder is to always check the date in the store when purchasing. Hopefully the form factor of a replacement will be the same as an original so it just plugs in.
Yeah, would be a bummer to purchase a 2 year old unit and cut into the useful life.
when I worked at Menards ( a midwest based home center chain), I always told people at the ten year mark to bring one of their old detectors in so we could try to match the wiring harness.
I've seen one model with an adaptor provided, and the worst example is Kidde/Firex seem to change the shape of their plug every 8-10 years.
Step 3. Worked. Thank you for posting this video. Now I can sleep better tonight.
You just saved me from having to hammer this thing down since I couldn't figure out how to stop it from chirping.
Thank you your video was very helpful, with my fire detector I just needed to replace the batteries. Thank you, saved my eardrums lol😂
Thank you! It is 10pm at night and your video helped me solve my chirping. It was step 2 that solved my problem. Thank You.
Wow! Thank you!!! I never knew all that you shared besides swap the battery!
Thank you! My maintenance in the building won’t answer the phone so I had to figure it out on my own. It’s fixed now! 🙂
This beep woke me up at 3:30 am and didn’t know how to silence it. Thank you!
Thank you soo much@ I was losing my mind and sleep! Your instructions were perfect!!
It tells you on the device what the different chirps could be. Battery. End of life etc. I'm a fire and life safety tech so I see these kinds of things everyday. Test your detectors. Change your batteries at the same time. Replace faulty devices. Don't ever disconnect and leave yourself unprotected.
Best one I've seen. Concise and comprehensive.
Thank you so much.. the chirp FINALLY stopped.
Thank you so much for the video… we finally got it fixed after Step 3… our sanity thanks you!
Excellent video. Short, sweet and to the point without excessive rambling words - Thank you!!!
Very helpful. Used the last suggestion with blowing air in the unit. Also, knowing that their is a lifespan for these units was very helpful.
I keep hearing the "chirp" in violent home videos. Weird.
Hi,
I replaced 5 smoke detectors but one wouldn't stop beeping!
Your toothbrush solution saved my sanity. Thank you! 😮💨
Thank you! (Now i hear the next door's apartment chirping as well 😂)
Saw your video in 2024!! Thanks so much, it stopped chirping finally.
Happy to help!
Awesome video. I loved the fact that even though everything was not fixed on the first try, in the end you succeeded. I really appreciated the troubleshooting steps. Thank you.
You bet!
Thank you. I did step 2 and beeping stopped . Of course this had to happen when I had company. 😂. Thanks again.
Thanks for helping out the black community
Thank you for your video, I had to go all the way to step 3, and found that I will have to change it out by next year(I didn't know that!). First time home owner, so previously I just requested maintenance 😂, because of your video I was able to complete the fix on my lunch break!
For some ungodly reason, mine were installed on my 15 ft high ceilings 😟
because smoke rises.
