This video got me back to sleep. I was up between 1 am and 2:30 am with the low battery chirp and feeling incredibly helpless. You saved me! My "manual" said nothing about discharging the detector by holding the button down after the batteries were removed. It also did not explain the weird red latches (what should I call them?) that had to be held down to install the batteries, or what to do with the weird yellow tape (please!). I followed the directions with little hope that it would actually work, but to my amazement it did. I am a 65 year old woman living alone. You and the rest of the commenters here (I read all of them, they were super helpful) are my heroes! Long live UA-cam.
5 years into the future and ur video is still helping people out thats crazy lol, first try did not work for some odd reason, it kind of pist me off so i did it again thankfully now it is noise free lol, thx so much!

Wow! I must say... This video is 5 years old but it obviously never gets too old. I finally got the chirping to stop. It's been like 2-3 months that I have been living with this. Thank you so much!

I found these videos to be informative but I still couldn't get the beeping to stop even in a new device with new batteries. I drained the charge and restored the power but it still chirped. I finally decided to look at the other smoke alarms in the system. I found an old battery which I removed and replaced. I then did a re-cycle of the problem device and when I restored power and inserted the battery it was quiet. Its been quiet for 10 hours. I have concluded that the failing battery in the other unit was affecting the completely new smoke detector. I really hope this is helpful.
4 am and the alarm has been beeping for 2 hours. We have done everything even turned off the electricity. Still beeping. Now we are removing it as you said. Thank you.

Thanks, this video was very helpful. I thought I was going crazy for a second, I swapped out 3 different fresh batteries and the beeping wouldn't shut off. Unplugging it from AC, removing the battery and discharging it for 15 seconds did the trick!
After watching this and following your steps, I did it!! The chirping stopped and I can finally go to sleep peacefully!! Thank you so much for making this video!!

Omg 😮😮 I’m so glad I came across your video . Since I couldn’t figure out which alarm it was , I replaced the battery in all 5 , still chirped !! So I followed your instructions and no more chirps ! Insomnia plus chirping every 30 seconds, no bueno !! Thank you !
Thanks for posting. This is the only posting that actually resolves the chirping issue . Not a long winded explanation of a bunch of nothing but right to the point! Thanks again

Thanks for posting this, Michael. I just reset the faulty alarm that was waking us between 1 and 2 AM regularly. I took the time to do the rest of the house's alarms as well. Hopefully we've heard the last of the chirping. While I had them down, I also blew some dust out of each one with compressed air, as I had read about elsewhere. Seemed like a good idea. Much appreciated!

Thank you so much for this video. Our dog was having serious anxiety with the chirping. Your directions were perfect. Thank you for doing a step-by-step
We appreciate that, hopefully many stress free days ahead for you and your dog. We definitely understand the annoyance that a chirping detector can cause.😁👍
We had to defective smoke alarms, put in the same place when the maintenance guy took them out it was tripping on the ground without being connected, and without a battery being in at my dog almost had a heart attack. I had to take him outside. He was panting so bad.
So happy to have found you on you tube. All day the landlord tried to change the batteries in smoke detector following the 6 steps. It kept beeping. Finally went an bought a new smoke detector and it worked. He is now following your steps in changing the rest of smoke detector batteries following you instruction and we have success. Now suscribed to your channel

You, sir, are my hero!!! Mine was still chirping every 30 seconds or so after putting a new 9V battery in. Twisted the alarm counter-clockwise, and come to find out, it's not even hardwired! The wires are just stuffed into the ceiling. No wonder the batteries keep draining so quickly. Drained it for 15 seconds but I'm leaving the detector off the ceiling and I'm going to see if someone can hardwire it correctly for me before remounting it. Thanks again!!!!

Thanks Michael, this is just what I needed to know. I climbed a shaky 16 foot ladder to change the battery on a wired smoke detector, and as soon as I got down, it started beeping again. I never had to reset it before inserting a new battery but I replaced the battery again with a new one and did the reset this time and it is now not beeping any more. I tested both batteries with a cheap Radio Shack analog tester and both were in the GOOD zone. But I measured the voltage of both, as you suggest in the video, and I found the first battery to be at only 7.6V. The second one was at 9.33V, so I don't know if the problem was the lower voltage of the first battery, alone, or the fact that I did not reset the unit, or both. Probably the low voltage alone, but it is better to do the simple reset anyway, just in case.

I'm here at this video at 0235 in the morning. A chirping smoke detector brought me hear. I've watched 3 video so far and it's still chirping. How is it we can send a man to the freaking moon but can't master a decent smoke detector that allows your family to sleep?!?!?! I'm literally about to burn my freaking house down to shut it up. It's aggravating beyond belief.
Jessica Dunn Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. We definitely understand your annoyance with the Smoke Detector. What’s the update? Let’s get this figured out together! Chirping Detectors are almost always caused by a low battery voltage. Over the years, the battery loses voltage & then causes the detector to chirp. Replacing your old battery with a new battery should help. If it doesn’t, let’s move to the next step of the troubleshooting process. Keep us posted, Let’s get this figured out! 😎👍 Please subscribe to the channel and turn on your UA-cam notification Bell 🛎 that would be awesome thanks again! 👍

Thank you for this well explained video! There’s nothing worse than a heart-stopping alarm at 3:30am, getting a ladder to change the battery, AND IT GOES OFF AGAIN!! Ours are interconnected, so the whole house was going off over a 2 hour period... UNTIL I finally pinpointed the breaker, which finally shut them off!!! My gosh! QUESTION: Should I leave breaker off while I’m uninstalling/replacing/reinstalling all alarms? Thank you!!!!

It is now 2018 and I STILL don't understand why we need batteries for a smoke detector that is wired, what's the point and purpose of the battery and the battery door if you have to unhook it from the base and do all that you did in this video?

DIY With Michael Borders my question is why the battery drains of power IF it is only running on the AC power supply until a power outage? I've had batteries last years in seasonal Christmas decorations than a Duracell battery in a AC powered fire alarm.

Thank you!! My soon to be ex husband is an electrician and he just unhooked the ones that beeped instead of replacing the batteries. I had no idea they needed to be fully replaced but as he does this for a living he 100% does know that. Now that it’s just me and the kids because said slime ball is cheating on me with a CONVICTED FELLON! I’m left to figure all this stuff out. Your video helped a ton!! The smoke detectors that are left in the house are 18 YEARS OLD!! The date on the backs say 2002!! That was the year the home was built! I’m going to call the fire dept later today to see if they can come help replace the batteries temporarily until I can afford to buy new detectors. I can’t get my right arm up to disconnect them as my right upper arm is broken and in a cast. I honestly had no clue where to even start before watching your video. My smoke detector is HARDWIRED into the ceiling RIGHT OVER THE STOVE. Whatever architectural genius did that move - it literally goes off EVERY time I make toast. Like not even toasted toast. Just plugging in the friggin' toaster will set it off. Needless to say ... it's a nightmare.
Holly Robinson 😲 That is wild! That is definitely an interesting set up & not normal code. By chance, was the house remodeled years ago & the kitchen was not in its current place before the remodel? Our only thought is that a remodel took place before you entered home & that hard wired Smoke Detector was always there however it may have been a living room or something. OMG came here to hopefully help somebody.. I almost beat dh out ta my alarms because all THREE kept chirping even after replacing the batteries.. The Reset after disconnect is a great idea. In our case we installed a brand new 9 Volt battery. The chirping began several hours later. I yanked the new battery out and ran a battery test which started at 6 volts and quickly dropped to 0 volts in seconds. A brand new Duracell battery was the issue. Bad quality control by Duracell perhaps.

Really good video. Thank you! All that chirp means is that the battery needs replaced. If everyone would remember to test their alarms monthly, replace the batteries annually, and replace the entire unit every 10 years much of their problems would be avoided. I just replaced mine a month ago and the original alarms were 16 years old. I am the Fire Education Specialist for our county!

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders According to the US Fire Administration website, we have lost 1,029 people in the United States due to fire in their homes so far this year. Thank you for showing me how 😊..I couldn't figure out why it kept chirping when I changed the batteries....🥴 I didn't know you had to reset/test it before I had put it back on
Same kind of wired+battery backup Kiddie/FireX. It keeps chirping after replacing batteries and cleaning all the contacts off oxides. Eventually found that inside there are four contacts that connect the battery to the circuit, and there is bad connection there. This prevents the 9V from battery from feeding to the circuits. Cleaned these contacts and bent the spring wiper contacts and solved the problem. There are three tabs under the foam ring that you pry with a flat head to open the cover. Because the wire to the buzzer is short and don't use too much force when opening the cover. Push on a tab to remove the circuit board to see the contacts.

Thank you for the info on the electrical portion of unplugging the smoke detector from the ceiling in order to drain the battery of any stored power which will cause it to do a reset. I help my mother take care of her home and I was confused, earlier today, after I replaced the battery in the smoke detector, it began to chirp again. I did a little research and came across ur video. This must be why that is happeneing... It is too late to for me to try this out but I plan to try this procedure tomorrow morning. I hope this is the solution?!? 🙂 I'll report back...🤔🤞
This came in handy with the low battery notification vocally going off at my mother's place.Fortunately, she'll be back from her trip soon.Mines uses the triple A

I would just push the button and the chirping will stop for about 12 hours.
5 years into the future and ur video is still helping people out thats crazy lol, first try did not work for some odd reason, it kind of pist me off so i did it again thankfully now it is noise free lol, thx so much!

Lol this was literally me and my girlfriend the last two nights. She was more bothered than I but you know they complain till it’s fixed 😂😂
Thank you.

Thanks for watching & sharing your experience.

Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your comment! That a great question. I went ahead & made a quick video today explaining why the Battery is required! Link to the video is below! Definitely check it out!

The battery is just in case of a power interruption
NVHSChadSheppard1
You are spot on! That little battery is pretty darn important in that it is the emergency backup power source. Thanks again for watching! 😎👍🔧🔩
I'm even more confused why you don't want your smoke detector to work when there is a power outage. Hmmmm
DIY With Michael Borders my question is why the battery drains of power IF it is only running on the AC power supply until a power outage? I've had batteries last years in seasonal Christmas decorations than a Duracell battery in a AC powered fire alarm.
Thanks for posting this...i had a bit newer model, but the steps were the same and it worked!!

Yes I was thinking that too, but thought of UTube.
Lol... me too....
Well, I took out the sledgehammer, but thanks to your video, there is one more un-smashed detector out there. Thank you :-)
Thanks so much! Your tip about discharging all of the fire alarms saved me. I replaced the batteries in each one and was still having alarms. But I tried your steps and *golden silence*
Thanks for watching Tamara, welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. That’s great news, golden silence sounds nice.
Hopefully many stress free days ahead for you.

Thank you so much, I was going to get a hammer and smash my smoke detector it was going off last nite since 3am even after I changed the new battery.. Its the same model you have on your video.

Thank you so much for the knowledgeable advice!!

Holly Robinson
😲 That is wild! That is definitely an interesting set up & not normal code.
By chance, was the house remodeled years ago & the kitchen was not in its current place before the remodel?
Our only thought is that a remodel took place before you entered home & that hard wired Smoke Detector was always there however it may have been a living room or something.
An electrician would never install a “Hard Wired” detector above a cooking stove! 🤔
Let us know if you find any info on a recent remodel?

Mine is hard wired over the beginning of the staircase. I will need to have an electrician move it because it is so scary changing batteries with a ladder at the edge of the top step.

OMG came here to hopefully help somebody.. I almost beat dh out ta my alarms because all THREE kept chirping even after replacing the batteries.. Finally found out that in One of detectors, one of the metal battery "thingy" 😊 was pushed down and therefore not getting the battery energy.. I used a plastic knife and pulled it in place, put the battery in correctly, tested all 3 and voila... No more chirping 😃 *I hope this helps someone* ❤

In each and every case there were smoke alarms in the home that were not working.
Test your alarms monthly, replace the batteries annually, and replace the alarm when they are over 10 years old! Follow my Facebook page at "PCFD Fire Safety Education" for more information.

Thank you for showing me how 😊..I couldn't figure out why it kept chirping when I changed the batteries....🥴 I didn't know you had to reset/test it before I had put it back on
Hi Paully, so happy to help. By the sounds of it, you accomplished your DIY project and we appreciate you sharing this.
Thanks for watching & sharing this great info, we appreciate it. Any & all helpful info is greatly appreciated.
