This video got me back to sleep. I was up between 1 am and 2:30 am with the low battery chirp and feeling incredibly helpless. You saved me! My "manual" said nothing about discharging the detector by holding the button down after the batteries were removed. It also did not explain the weird red latches (what should I call them?) that had to be held down to install the batteries, or what to do with the weird yellow tape (please!). I followed the directions with little hope that it would actually work, but to my amazement it did. I am a 65 year old woman living alone. You and the rest of the commenters here (I read all of them, they were super helpful) are my heroes! Long live UA-cam.

Wow! I must say... This video is 5 years old but it obviously never gets too old. I finally got the chirping to stop. It's been like 2-3 months that I have been living with this. Thank you so much!

I found these videos to be informative but I still couldn't get the beeping to stop even in a new device with new batteries. I drained the charge and restored the power but it still chirped. I finally decided to look at the other smoke alarms in the system. I found an old battery which I removed and replaced. I then did a re-cycle of the problem device and when I restored power and inserted the battery it was quiet. Its been quiet for 10 hours. I have concluded that the failing battery in the other unit was affecting the completely new smoke detector. I really hope this is helpful.
5 years into the future and ur video is still helping people out thats crazy lol, first try did not work for some odd reason, it kind of pist me off so i did it again thankfully now it is noise free lol, thx so much!
That’s awesome, we appreciate you watching. 5 years strong and hoping for many more years of that video helping out our fellow DIYers and the DIY community. 😎👍
4 am and the alarm has been beeping for 2 hours. We have done everything even turned off the electricity. Still beeping. Now we are removing it as you said. Thank you.

Thanks for posting this, Michael. I just reset the faulty alarm that was waking us between 1 and 2 AM regularly. I took the time to do the rest of the house's alarms as well. Hopefully we've heard the last of the chirping. While I had them down, I also blew some dust out of each one with compressed air, as I had read about elsewhere. Seemed like a good idea. Much appreciated!

Thanks, this video was very helpful. I thought I was going crazy for a second, I swapped out 3 different fresh batteries and the beeping wouldn't shut off. Unplugging it from AC, removing the battery and discharging it for 15 seconds did the trick!
Thank you so much for this video. Our dog was having serious anxiety with the chirping. Your directions were perfect. Thank you for doing a step-by-step
We appreciate that, hopefully many stress free days ahead for you and your dog. We definitely understand the annoyance that a chirping detector can cause.😁👍
We had to defective smoke alarms, put in the same place when the maintenance guy took them out it was tripping on the ground without being connected, and without a battery being in at my dog almost had a heart attack. I had to take him outside. He was panting so bad.
My husband actually had no idea that the wires could be unplugged😉 We did what you suggested and _complete silence_ good sleep. No Dollar Tree batteries either! Thank you again.

You, sir, are my hero!!! Mine was still chirping every 30 seconds or so after putting a new 9V battery in. Twisted the alarm counter-clockwise, and come to find out, it's not even hardwired! The wires are just stuffed into the ceiling. No wonder the batteries keep draining so quickly. Drained it for 15 seconds but I'm leaving the detector off the ceiling and I'm going to see if someone can hardwire it correctly for me before remounting it. Thanks again!!!!

I didn't know that you need to plug the alarm off from the ceiling completely to change the batteries. Finally got rid of that "low battery" beeping hell. Thank you!
Thanks Michael, this is just what I needed to know. I climbed a shaky 16 foot ladder to change the battery on a wired smoke detector, and as soon as I got down, it started beeping again. I never had to reset it before inserting a new battery but I replaced the battery again with a new one and did the reset this time and it is now not beeping any more. I tested both batteries with a cheap Radio Shack analog tester and both were in the GOOD zone. But I measured the voltage of both, as you suggest in the video, and I found the first battery to be at only 7.6V. The second one was at 9.33V, so I don't know if the problem was the lower voltage of the first battery, alone, or the fact that I did not reset the unit, or both. Probably the low voltage alone, but it is better to do the simple reset anyway, just in case.

Thanks for your clear demo. It's exactly our unit. Followed exactly your instructions, including hearing the residual electric charge after the battery had been taken off. The chirping stopped after installing ne battery. However, the unit flashes red light after every 30 second interval. I followed exactly how you did it. Any response is appreciated.

Thanks for the vid. I have the same model and tried replacing the battery, but the second I plug into power source it starts beeping (not chirping) and doesn't seem to stop until I silence it. After silencing it stops, but starts beeping again a few seconds later. Any thoughts?
Doug Henness Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your experience Doug! I recommend removing Detector from the actual Hard wiring, remove Battery, & then Drain All remaining electrical charge as shown in the video. The Reset after disconnect is a great idea. In our case we installed a brand new 9 Volt battery. The chirping began several hours later. I yanked the new battery out and ran a battery test which started at 6 volts and quickly dropped to 0 volts in seconds. A brand new Duracell battery was the issue. Bad quality control by Duracell perhaps.

Thank you for this well explained video! There’s nothing worse than a heart-stopping alarm at 3:30am, getting a ladder to change the battery, AND IT GOES OFF AGAIN!! Ours are interconnected, so the whole house was going off over a 2 hour period... UNTIL I finally pinpointed the breaker, which finally shut them off!!! My gosh! QUESTION: Should I leave breaker off while I’m uninstalling/replacing/reinstalling all alarms? Thank you!!!!

DIY With michael borders. Hey! Thanks for uploading the video. But I have a questions. I have 6 smoke detectors at home. All of them are wired with the backup batteries. But randomly 3 of them started doing the noise. I have replaced the batteries. Disconnected them and drained the left over power with the battery off until they wouldnt make any more noise. I have installed the battery back and connected them but they are still going on. I cleaned them and they even got the green light but they wont stop beeing every minute :(. Do you happen to have another suggestion? I mean they are cheap i might as well buy then new but are rhe lile syncrhonozed with each other?
Irvin Casanueva Thanks for watching & sharing your experience Irvin! Let’s get this figured out! A few things come to mind! 1. Age of detector plays a big part. After the smoke detector exceeds the expiration date, it is recommended to replace it at your earliest convenience. A set of new detectors may solve your problem. 2. The 4-Common reasons detectors go off without smoke. You mentioned you already did a good amount of self checking & cleaning. It leaves us to the last reason...High Moisture! Below is A link to a video that will explain in more detail. Definitely check it out! ua-cam.com/video/nRSMg_dVH9k/v-deo.html Keep us posted! Called Kibbe and they said that my 20 detectors were probably out of date. They were dated 2011 Mar 10 so I assumed they were 10 years guaranteed but was told most likely 7 seven years was the end of life for them - quite an expense to replace them all. Saw that they were averaging 30- 40 dollars each that's a major expense.

Hello Great video! I have the same smoke detector as you have. Do I need to turn off the power before I unplug it? I think it's safe because it's not hard wired into the house, but I just wanted to check. Thanks

I would just push the button and the chirping will stop for about 12 hours.

We had to defective smoke alarms, put in the same place when the maintenance guy took them out it was tripping on the ground without being connected, and without a battery being in at my dog almost had a heart attack. I had to take him outside. He was panting so bad.

Tami VanDerKamp
Thanks for watching Tami. Getting woken up at 3:30am is no fun. Hopefully you can get your system back up & running properly.
You can definitely leave breaker off while you service detectors. Keep us posted on your project.

DIY With Michael Borders thank you for answering my question regarding breaker!
My husband works out of town a lot and it seems things like this ALWAYS happen during those times. Your video will be most helpful when I get around to taking care of this matter, as I’m really in no big hurry since our home has 2 smoke detectors wired to our alarm system.
Have a great day, and yes, I’ve subscribed to your channel with notifications!

Irvin Casanueva
Thanks for watching & sharing your experience Irvin!

You saved this single mom's sanity. THANK YOU!

I have this same smoke detector and it ended up being the 9 volt battery. It was showing 7.8 volts so I replaced it with a new one. I reset it like you showed, so hopefully it's stop chirping. It only did it once in a while, but seems like the same time every night.

Thanks for watching & we are happy the video helped Terry. Although these little fancy engineered gadgets can be annoying when chirping & beeping in the early morning hours....they sure are important to have set up in the proper configuration...fresh battery, cleaned, & reset. 😀👍

Hello Great video! I have the same smoke detector as you have. Do I need to turn off the power before I unplug it? I think it's safe because it's not hard wired into the house, but I just wanted to check. Thanks

So my question does it chirp (like the regular ones) when it needs to be changed or go the hell off like there's a fire!!
Good morning, a low battery should only trigger the chirp, not trigger the full detector alarm. Keep us posted on your project.
