@@grigger7000 Bethesda's Fallouts were good games in my opinion, they just weren't good Fallout games. They lack the passion required to make a good one. It would be a dream come true if Obsidian made another Fallout game or a New Vegas remaster with all the cut content.
@@arcturus4317 Well put. I liked Fallout 3 and 4, I think the way they conceptualized the gameplay (we wouldn't have 3D Fallout w/o 3) was really cool! But the stories feels a little... out of place in the overarching universe.
Avellone talks about how Dead Money was supposed to be horror-themed, but I think all the DLCs had plenty of horror elements; Dead Money is a zombie-esque survival horror, Honest Hearts feels like old stories of being stranded in a foreign place and being forced to survive and find your way back to civilization, Old World Blues is both campy 50's sci-fi and genuine body horror, and Lonesome Road is like an apocalypse disaster within an apocalypse. They're all expertly written and to me are genuinely creepy.
Fells like a 4th wall break, as most of the location markers for objectives and items lead you to the exact place, compared to other games where the items can be in a room but not marked so you have to search it
@@josejuancerdabarraza3544 It felt like just the right amount of 4th wall breaking. We constantly hear “Let me mark it in your Pipboy” or whatever but this is the one time how the Pipboy functions in-universe (that I can think of) is mentioned outside of throw-away Preston Garvey comments. But it also would’ve raised other questions “Who writes in the objectives? Who’s been updating the topographic map of the post-WW3 US? Who’s operating the GPS satellites to track current Pipboy locations?” Probably better off never trying to define exactly how it works in-game as it’s just a player interface but since it’s a staple of the series it’s cool to hear it mentioned more.

I remember when this DLC came out and everyone hating it. Especially the ones who didn't get into crafting much and were suddenly forced to do it. I think the fan backlash scared obsidian into making anything similar to it's in further DLCs.
It was so easy. Pick up melee, spam the most boring pkaystyle in the game, and hoard shit like you're townbuilding in F4. If they had more or better exploration, more than one kind of enemy, or anything that isn't spanking the same mob 50 times it would be OK. It took me like 7 days to beat it just because I would play for a few minutes, get bored, and turn off the game. Only played for the story and lore. Half a DLC. I felt ripped off.
19:15 The barrel IS actually used as a trap in the escape sequence. Although, it kinda just tips over in front of the player, so it's more of a scenic thing than a trap.
Honestly, Dead Money definitely has one of my favorite stories in the game and I have always found it's challenge rewarding for that reason. It's always my penultimate quest for that reason too. In general I can flip whether I do Honest Hearts or Old World Blues first, even though HH is really meant to be first. Dead Money though? It's not just the difficulty but, honestly, also that it just feels at home as the penultimate quest before Lonesome Road. A last great challenge, a gauntlet to test your resolve, and a story to tie off the last few side-plot threads before Lonesome Road wraps up the present and The Battle of Hoover Dam puts a bow on it. A part of me will always feel like New Vegas would be just a bit less without it and I'll always appreciate it's inclusion. Honestly, talking about all this kind of makes me want to play it again.
On the subject of losing hours of progress... I was at Vault 34, getting the All American Carbine Rifle. By the time i left the Vault & made it to that gap of no radiation in the cave closest to the Vault Entrance, i had not only used all my Rad Away, bit had also found myself to be at the rad cap... Meaning if i took TWO steps in either direction, it was an instant death.
The part about arrow heart man is probably the most interesting to me, as it fills out a bit more of Elijahs previous attempt that got him trapped in the casino, and how it all went wrong afterwords. I feel like we also see some of his graffiti in other DLCs, but that might just be reused assets or me making things up.
Dead Money is my favorite Fallout anything. The characters, writing, atmopshere, setting, all the art-deco style, I love all of it. As always, a highly entertaining and informative video, thanks for making it!!
This DLC literally made my character an alcoholic, he became addicted to multiple different spirits simultaneously just to counter the early bird perk.
Yeah if you go into it with the wrong build you are gonna have a tough time. And for the sake of your sanity I strongly suggest getting the light step perk.
"Pretty as a picture" from Deans blackmail tape sent me on a wild goose chase looking for framed pictures all over the place, expecting one of them to be a secret wall safe holding the actual blackmail material.
It felt more like system shock 2 to me, maybe that's just because I'm more familiar with that one than Bioshock. Bioshock's design is more or less a streamlined SS2 anyway
Love this DLC. Old world casino heist orchestrated by a mad brotherhood scribe? And I'm trapped with a croner Ghoul, Narcissist Super Mutant and Brotherhood assassin? Fuck yes.
@@charlesthoreson4162 there's no reason for it to not be remastered honestly. Pretty much the only game I've seen that people want a remaster for but for some reason Bethesda doesn't want some mad bucks to settle their greed.

one thing about the cut graffiti: the “soul for sail” is probably a reference to “love sets sail”, a film vera keyes starred in:) thanks for the video!
This DLC came out right when my Postpartum Depression was at it's worst. The story and atmosphere dragged me in and had me hooked. Hearing Vera's hologram crying for Sinclair and help get me every time. I leave the gold. I leave her dress. I left my ❤️ in the Sierra Madre PS: I wish we could have gotten at least one or two lines letting Cristine know Veronica is ok. And vice versa
This has been such a cool and insightful series. When it's done in a few episodes, do you think you could do a video talking about how you did your research and your thought process when writing/recording? One thing I'm really curious about is how much you got your hands wet digging around in the G.E.C.K. yourself versus how much you gathered information from modders and data miners.
The casino is probably somewhere in the Dead Mountain range in California. The Colorado river, that is mentioned my Elijah in the intro, connects from Hoover Dam and travels south to border Nevada and California. Dead mountains is situated about 10 km from the River. Far enough from even Searchlight and Nelson; even further from Big MT (presumed Bald Mountain IRL) to be under any substantial fallout from the nukes. Still close enough for dealings between the two parties to occur. And Dead mountains is a pretty spot on name.
I feel Dead Money is a better title than Dead Mans Hand because its more unique and the concept of Dead Money as a gambling term is waaaaaaaay better for the whole "let go" theme the DLC is aiming for
I remember from the terminal entries that the ghost around the villa were construction workers for the villa / Sierra Madre, but once the gas was activated it made them go crazy and they couldn't remove their suits. Their suits were made to have filters to ignore the effects of the gas, but Dean Domino I believe had cheaped out and didn't actually spend money to implement this feature, and instead kept the money.
You sure about Dean's holo recording being cut? I remember hearing that whole thing, not just the first line, in my game. Same with the "E.B.E." note to Sinclair, I definitely remember reading that one in my game.
@@NintendoSunnyDee I remember the troopers in between forlorn hope and nelson. Legs blown off and groping the air. When I talked to them all they would say was "Kill me...." then it was removed with the first update.
It still angers me to no end that Christine couldn't come back to the Mojave as a companion, partly because she's voice by Laura-freaking-Bailey and partly because it would have been nice for Veronica and Christine to finally reunite after Christine's obsession with killing Elijah was over. They both deserved that much and I think her ending where she literally just sits in the Sierra Madre forever is complete BS. There's a lot of wasted potential in FNV as a whole, but that one legit took the cake.

I found primm boring when I played fallout NV first time, but after learning about cut content around it, it is my favourite fallout location. I even had fun saving primm and doing runs for powder gangers, while imagining the developers original version of them
It floors me how much of New Vegas' potential is kneecapped by its own confounding spaghetti code. Like, who decided hairstyles are linked to age? Why? And that's just one example of the many Gamebryo engine quirks...
I’m always kind of curious how the ghosts would work with FO4’s ghoul system where you could have a functioning and aggressive entity while losing limbs since the ghosts in NV lose almost every bit of scare that they have when you realize just targeting one limb kills them pretty quickly (especially since all the DLC weapons do some form of extra limb damage). Would definitely add more to the immortal aspect that the ghosts have lore wise, and maybe making their head unbreakable to add even more scare to them since the normal tactics won’t work. Making them these immortal things that you can only delimb really adds to that idea you need to hack and slash them completely to stop them.
Considering all the other mistakes and oversights in the DLC I'm wondering if the ghost worship triggers not being placed is cut content or someone forgetting to place them or not having time to place them.
every time my adhd rehyperfixates on new vegas i start rewatching your cut content vids, they’re just perfect to tide my brain over from wanting to play the game desperately while im at work. thank you for your hard work!

I completely vibe with the desire Avellone had to go back to the "Road Warrior" feel with Dead Money, it's why I enjoy it. There's something to be said about how important decent difficulty is in keeping a game feeling like it's set in a world where survival isn't guaranteed and is a constant struggle -- if you're resource rich, kicking around in invincible armour with lasers that melt anything, you don't feel vulnerable and encounters don't carry weight.
I will die on this hill: anyone who didn't like Dead Money didn't like it because it was the only part of New Vegas that actually punishes you for being bad at it.
Meh. I mostly find it annoying. It's not too hard I just don't like much of the loot you get either. Least favorite of all the dlc. Although the story is cool and liked how they wrapped up Elijah's story, and integrated him into other dlc's
No dead money is a shitty dlc only praised for the slighty above Medicore writing. The speakers kill all the middling fun and the ghost people get stale quickly
Lmao I don’t like dead money cause the opposite, it’s challenging until you meet dog then from there it’s a cake walk. Got to install mods to make it harder
I love the comment where Chris mentions he misses the 'Road Warrior' feel! This is how I feel about Fallout and why I make gameplay where I'm fighting tooth and nail to survive. Every tin can, duct tape, bullet I find is a joy. Using these resources I find to craft makeshift mines or carry multiple blades cause they break after 3 hits makes me play more cautiously and feels so rewarding when I survive. I know people want Fallout to be fun and enjoyable, but Dead Money is by far one of my favourite DLCs in all of Fallout
16:16 I never knew all the years I've been playing this game there was a developer behind that wall having to control radio signals and ambient music.. I always just assumed the games code did all that, no wounder they get paid so much! I don't envy them.
Thanks for the community for finishing obsidian's games, fixing too, I play with the unnoficial patch so I would never know that Deam holotape was broken lol

“Designed to scare the hell out of fallout players. But it didn’t.” Bitch I was scared. The ghost peoples breathing sounds when their near. Especially when I didn’t have any equipment. The ambience of the haunting singing and other background noises was unsettling. I wasn’t constantly terrified like in a straight up horror game. But I was on edge for sure and my anxiety shot up when I’d hear ghost people lol
"We wanted every item to feel valuable" Me: [Lugging around 100 Sierra Madre Martinis] I would have made more but I didn't find more tin cans. The DLC is a much different experience when you are overleveled, I'll say that much.
The Duck and Cover skillbook under the bed in Dean's room is actually not inaccessible, just you would never know it's there without meta knowledge. But it's actually intended that you are supposed to use explosives to launch the book out from under the bed. Unfortunately due to some poorly designed hitboxes, this ends up being much harder than it should be, but it is definitely possible to do so.
I'm sorry, but there's absolutely no way that was intentional. It makes 0 sense and you're saying this as if it's an indisputable fact. You provide no evidence of their intentions.
@@requiemdermorgenrote4465 It's clearly accidentally placed. I don't know what to tell you. It makes no sense that the devs would intend on the skill book being acquired that way when there's no chance that anyone would even be able to see it.
The skill book is completely out of sight under the bed. The only way to even see it is by throwing grenades, which nobody would think to do if they didn't have meta knowledge that it was there. I spent about 20 minutes throwing frag grenades towards the bed at all angles, and the book never came out. It seemed to be held in by an invisible wall. If you managed to get it out without noclipping, good for you, but there's no way that it was intended to be found like that.
Of all the things to learn watching this, the one that tickled me the most was seeing a stillshot from Franklyn as an inspiration for the Ghost People. Didn't think anyone else had even seen that movie.
When I just finished my first playthrough of Sierra Madre, I came into the DLC thinking it would be a very hard experience, having to utilise the repair and crafting mechanics to survive...but just some time in and discovering, that the enemies can still die and the cloud doing only little damage and loot abundant, I was a little let down... About a timer at the Gala Event...I just didn't want to deal with all those new spawned in enemies so I just ran through...that felt really tense and great :D
I remember when I was going to start the event. I put a good pair of suit I managed to get and repair and I made a save before I set off the fireworks. As soon the fireworks set off and the dead came I made a run that really felt like a movie Parkouring my way around to not get hit, running without looking back, all that while wearing my Grimy suit, my prewar hat and a good pair of sunglasses It was intense but also freaking amazing!
You're nuts man. With this series you've got to be among the devs in terms of knowledge of the game, along with maybe a few of the top tier modders. The amount of work you have put into uncovering the secrets of the development is insane and not underappreciated. Been following you since The Legion: Part 1 and am always looking forward to another video. Can't wait to see what series you move onto next. Maybe KOTOR2? Obsidian's dev cycle for it was just as punishing as New Vegas. Keep up the great work.
Hmm. I’ve had the Dean/Vera blackmail tape glitch out before but I’ve also had it play the entire message without error, and I don’t use mods. So it must be possible to hear it occasionally.

Hey there’s the high-roller
Youve been causing quite a stir on the strip
I also binge these things all the time
You know, if you were serving you'd be halfway up to general by now
Yeah, now we can start the party!
They're all expertly written and to me are genuinely creepy.
agreed.
i second
Fallout: Silent Hill
Fallout: Far Cry
Fallout: Bioshock
Fallout: Day Z
The only thing that lagged a bit for me was Ulysses’ story & dialogue. It felt lackluster. But I loved everything else.
Granted Fallout in general is kinda a horror game
6:30 “And no objectives appeared on the Pipboy’s screen” I really like that line for some reason
Fells like a 4th wall break, as most of the location markers for objectives and items lead you to the exact place, compared to other games where the items can be in a room but not marked so you have to search it
^^ It made me cringe in a good way 😭
@@josejuancerdabarraza3544 It felt like just the right amount of 4th wall breaking. Who’s operating the GPS satellites to track current Pipboy locations?”
Probably better off never trying to define exactly how it works in-game as it’s just a player interface but since it’s a staple of the series it’s cool to hear it mentioned more.
@@ShakenBake145 What if its something like a Enclave AI? Dutifully doing it's task of Aiding Pip-Boy Owners in their lives, unaware the Enclave has been destroyed, simply mindlessly doing its task as demanded
@@ShakenBake145 Phones have motion sensors now which track your general location, I assumed the pip boy 3000 had the same meme. And I also assumed that the player updated his objectives himself, but died before he could even think of doing that
I remember when this DLC came out and everyone hating it. Especially the ones who didn't get into crafting much and were suddenly forced to do it. I think the fan backlash scared obsidian into making anything similar to it's in further DLCs.
Good. Dead Money is terrible. It is the only DLC from FNV I can safely say I just didn’t ever enjoy.
@@surprisedchar2458 That's your wrong opinion...
@@surprisedchar2458 it's the best, you're crazy
It was so easy. Pick up melee, spam the most boring pkaystyle in the game, and hoard shit like you're townbuilding in F4. If they had more or better exploration, more than one kind of enemy, or anything that isn't spanking the same mob 50 times it would be OK. It took me like 7 days to beat it just because I would play for a few minutes, get bored, and turn off the game. Only played for the story and lore.
Half a DLC. I felt ripped off.
Guess at the time they don't know what the damn concept of survival horror is. Ungrateful people
"All of it was left on a cutting room floor" is just as iconic phrase now as "War, war never changes".
Both are iconic to Fallout. Unfortunate, for the former.
19:15 The barrel IS actually used as a trap in the escape sequence. Although, it kinda just tips over in front of the player, so it's more of a scenic thing than a trap.
THANK YOU, thought i was the only one thinking that
Let’s go, been waiting for this. Are you planning on covering the other DLCs as well?
lets hope so!
Can’t imagine how big lonesome road or old world blues are!
Old world blues would be nice.
He said fuck replying lol
Next up is honest hearts
It makes more sense doing DM before OWB though
@@themitheus why?

If I'm not mistaken wouldn't that line from Elijah about a foster daughter be referring to Veronica not Christine?
Oh no, I meant Veronica 😭😭😭

Them Sierra Madre martinis

For Elijah's hair they could have just made a duplicate of Caucasian old and added the crazy hair to that race and then set Elijah as that race.

"Pretty as a picture" from Deans blackmail tape sent me on a wild goose chase looking for framed pictures all over the place, expecting one of them to be a secret wall safe holding the actual blackmail material.
23:07 Honestly, Dean Domino looked cooler in concept art than in the actual game.
Everyone looks good in concept art.
I always got a Bioshock feeling from the DLC, good to know that it influenced it!
I get more of an old school resident evil feel
It felt more like system shock 2 to me, maybe that's just because I'm more familiar with that one than Bioshock. Bioshock's design is more or less a streamlined SS2 anyway

one thing about the cut graffiti: the “soul for sail” is probably a reference to “love sets sail”, a film vera keyes starred in:) thanks for the video!
This DLC came out right when my Postpartum Depression was at it's worst. The story and atmosphere dragged me in and had me hooked. Hearing Vera's hologram crying for Sinclair and help get me every time.

PS: I wish we could have gotten at least one or two lines letting Cristine know Veronica is ok. And vice versa
44:04 - Elijah is talking about Veronica for this most likely, you hear veronica talk so much about him even calling him sorta like a grandpa.
I feel Dead Money is a better title than Dead Mans Hand because its more unique and the concept of Dead Money as a gambling term is waaaaaaaay better for the whole "let go" theme the DLC is aiming for
I can't wait to see a cut content video for Lonesome Road. If it will have enough cut content for an hour long video, that would be great.

It still angers me to no end that Christine couldn't come back to the Mojave as a companion, partly because she's voice by Laura-freaking-Bailey and partly because it would have been nice for Veronica and Christine to finally reunite after Christine's obsession with killing Elijah was over. RIP Barry Dennen and Richard Herd, some of the best voice acting in the game.

"It's like, you get money... or u die"
I loved dead money but the one thing that drove me off was when I got late into the dlc everything felt like a chore.
It was easy it was just a slog. Didn't like it one bit. Took away all the guns I liked and replaced them with garbage. Only good part was the story.

"Much like the gold bars in the sierra madre being too heavy to carry out." Me, laughing with infinte carry weight
Agree, it seems most people can't get into survival horror or hardcore elements.

I would have made more but I didn't find more tin cans. The DLC is a much different experience when you are overleveled, I'll say that much.
The shotgun makes sense. You can find 20 gauge ammo all over the dlc but lack a way of actually using it.
@@Lorenzo_I. It's an explosives skillbook. You're supposed to use explosives to get it. What aren't you understanding here?

The skill book is completely out of sight under the bed. The only way to even see it is by throwing grenades, which nobody would think to do if they didn't have meta knowledge that it was there. I spent about 20 minutes throwing frag grenades towards the bed at all angles, and the book never came out. It seemed to be held in by an invisible wall. If you managed to get it out without noclipping, good for you, but there's no way that it was intended to be found like that.
No its clearly an accidental placement, just because you can knock it free with explosives, doesn't mean you were meant to
Of all the things to learn watching this, the one that tickled me the most was seeing a stillshot from Franklyn as an inspiration for the Ghost People.
As soon the fireworks set off and the dead came I made a run that really felt like a movie
Parkouring my way around to not get hit, running without looking back, all that while wearing my Grimy suit, my prewar hat and a good pair of sunglasses
It was intense but also freaking amazing!
It's made that way so people who didn't do repair and crafting can play but it's a lot easier if you have those skills.
