All of Kuiu gear is fantastic. I have a Divide for hunting pack, a 66L internal frame for backpacking/hunting trips, and their clothing options are fantastic. They're pricy, yes, but functionality and warmth is perfect. The main flaw is that all their clothes are very athletic cut. I have to buy 1 or 2 sizes above what I normally do and it's still a little tight. And I'm in pretty good shape. The tent....the weight is why I don't have it. They're meant to hike into a base camp and be there for days, so weight is a temporary sacrifice.
Great review Luke. Truly a feature rich tent. Why is there never perfection: just one more guy-out loop. But for those like myself who prefer a 25” sleeping pad, this tent is really just a one person palace. Another great, professional review.
Mountain Star 2 is bomb proof. I purchased mine 6 months ago ( with the orange fly) and have 2 hiking weekends on the AT and one more trip ( non hiking) in WV with this tent. Two monster rainstorms and not a drop inside and this set up is super sturdy . Light enough to backpack, strong enough for Mother Nature and I have plenty of room for wide thermarest, quilt and 40L backpack . I’m 6’260 , and am looking forward to more trips w this tent . Love it ! ( I got the $350 sale too)
I also thought about buying this tent the first time this video aired, and as you said, the sale price was very good. Couldn’t justify yet another tent, having over 10 already
I have this tent, along with their Mountain Star 1, along with their backpack, clothes and other items. I'm very familiar with this company and it's history, and had the pleasure of knowing it's founder, Jason Hairston. The company started Sitka years ago, then sold that and launched KUIU. Jason and his partners set up the company to supply hunters going after big game in places like Alaska, where your life depends on good equipment if the weather goes bad, so the equipment is bombproof. The only gripe I have is, I wish they'd make a convenient carry arrangement for traditional bows, since I don't hunt with a compound! Next to a Hilleberg, this is hands down, the very best tent you can have, and unlike the Hilleberg (Namaj, which I also own) it won't set you back a grand! Their backpacks are also top notch. KUIU has this old hunter/backpacker's highest recommendation.
After getting into hunting in my late 50s I discovered KUIU. I've purchased their clothing, and a really awesome backpack from them. I've been so impressed with their products that I've slowly replaced most of my outdoor clothing with KUIU brand clothing. I'm not surprised that this tent is as good as your initial review indicates. And what a great deal going on right now!
They make excellent tents. I have the Storm Star….their strongest tent. Believe me this tent is amazingly strong for its weight! I have several mountaineering tents which are a bit stronger but they weigh twice as much!
true. depending on price, people see like, $50 versus $300 and it makes no sense to them, but we know that $300 one will last 10x longer bare minimum. that would be $500 worth of those $50 ones.. it's a no brainer.
Just ordered and they have honoured the 40% discount as it’s now reduced to 20%. In the big scheme of things, it’s not that expensive when compared to something like the similar-sized Hilleberg Allak 2, currently retailing at $1300, Just needed a decent video like yours to tip the balance. It’ll be interesting as I absolutely love my Tarptent Scarp 1 but….hey…..I’m a tentaholic! Thanks for a great review!
I used my mountain star and I’ve set up 2p storm star 2 over 365 times in a row never had an issue. Had it in 70kmh winds up to maybe 85kmh and it didn’t budge. In all conditions heavy snow storms on top of the Rockies and in the Arctic Ocean, heavy down pour rain and storms. This tent is by far a beast! I’ve also used their storm star 2p 4 season and that’s the thing was a bomb shelter !!! Go kuiu
I love the tent. Binge watching videos from seven years ago with sweet Susie and you spring storm (surprise!!!) overnight adventure. I love all you guys videos binge watch 😂all .
I've had this tent for a cpl years it's a great tent overall. I do agree with you early spring or late autumn the all mesh inner does make it a chilly tent. I've been in 30mph winds with mine and it was solid. I do have a cpl of niggles with it though the door tie backs are very fiddly and the zip storm flaps vibrate like crazy so they should use waterproof zips or somehow stiffen the flap.
For backpacking, eventually you will need to camp in a stealth situation, so natural colors like that are very practical. Weight is good. For that price, though, you can get a Nemo Hornet 2 person that weighs about 2 lbs.
10:50 speaking of a 3+ season tent, I'm really hoping that those new Durston free standing tents end up being 3 season +. Would like a lighter alternative to the litefighter tents.
I got the tent set w/carbon poles for $336, using their current discount and a GovX discount code. Being able to et up just the fly, without the inner mesh adds another level of versatility.👍 I watched their setup video on their site that showed a couple setup tips that will help in specific situations in the future. Thanks for the video, and heads up about the existence of this product!
Huh, interesting feature, does it make actual sense? Wind is horisontal and with force from sides poles may just fall down and it seems like the cross console does not work with the poles in any way.
@isded8220 most definitely...I've used another tent with the same design & that short pole can be forced inwards if the wind catches it wrong & is powerful enough. By bracing it with a trecking pole it makes bombproof.
Just got this tent on sale, and used it on a recent camping trip, its awesome! I didn't receive the 2nd ground sheet, but the gray one works well. I also called it the morning star a few times, glad I am not the only one.
I have the storm star I had it for 3 years beyond solid The mountain star is also a great tent and of quality anyway I love your videos Luke thank you so much.
I usually run Big Agnes tents (since I carry them on my back), but I purchased this after watching your review. Looking to use this as a base camp tent near a vehicle for a few days at a time.
I bought mine earlier when the deal did not include the gear caddy. Additionally I think your gray lightweight ground sheet is an interior floor cover. That's something else I didn't get. I know that I did pay less, but I also got aluminum to me the setup is finicky and weird, but that'll change with time. That's just how it is with fly first tents. It always seems harder.
Hi Luke, I like this tent but the bag is too small so I use a larger one to fit everything in easier. And I would have preferred a rectangular shape as opposed to the trapezoid but not a big deal.
Regularly get 60-70mph constant winds where I live, I need to see a video of this tent in those conditions before I part with my money. They do look well made.
Looks like a sweet tent! If I were still using tents it seems like a nice little rig. I am a pretty firm hammocker just simply because when it really rains for real out in the bush, it pours and when it pours for real water runs underneath like a little stream. I’ve been in that situation more times than I care to mention but when that happens I get cozy in my bag in my hammock and split my time between Netflix and napping!😅☺️ Thanks for all your reviews Luke. I really liked your review of the Coleman sundome as that’s what I use on car camping trips if I DO use a tent. GO DDHAMMOCKS!!! NQU
Hi Luke . I absolutely love your channel . I've been watching regularly over the past two weeks . I find your channel so interesting , informative and totally relaxing . I'm watching from Cape Town , South Africa . My grandson has been living in Asheville , NC since Nov 2018 . He totally loves the beautiful nature you have there . They were lucky to get through hurricane Helene unscathed although it was his very first experience with a hurricane. Thankyou for your amazing , great content . I will definitely keep watching . 🤗
minus 1 inch per side because of wall pitch, so 6 ft 4 inches, that leaves me 2 inches on either side of clearance, doing the math, 1/3 of my feet and head will be against the wall lol too short! after using the usmc 2 man, 7 ft + is mandatory. can't have my canvas or bedding get wet at all cost. not to say that's bad, my hiking tent it 6'2" but it's uncomfortable and therefore more for 1 or 2 nights out of convenience rather than by choice for pleasure. i need 6 to 8 inches at me head and at my feet. i'm not being locked into the norm of "this is how long these things are, consumer." 1 extra foot is literally unnoticable overall, yet adds 100% comfort vs. zero. Btw this tent looks insane 😂 very sick color, build, oh yea! lol. i'd use it with a shorter pad i guess, just a thermarest. i need to lay on my back when i wake, and do stretches because of a bad car wreck. and injuries to spine neck and back. need to be able to have my feet straight up and head not touch the other wall : ) W wolfpack
I'm 6' 3" or 75" - when you lay down, your feet automatically drop away - so it adds 4 inches. I hate to have my head or my feet touching the tent.. So ideally and as a min you need the following height +4" for feet, + 6" head and foot room (or just add 12") to your height to make it comfortable... i need min 86" for a tent to work 90" is what i like :) i wish the tent manufacturers would make an XL version for us taller people...
Hi Luke! Long time viewer, first(?) comment. Anyway watched one of your vids of this tent (adventure), and I liked what I saw! Then this vid came out today, I think, and I watched it a couple of times. So afterwards I went on the Kiui site and decided to get it! It’s more than my Tigerwall, and a little less than my Fortress 2! So I think this is one that will do the job very well! Thanks a lot Luke! Say hello to Suzie for me! You both rock!
I like the fact that the poles are straight. I think that makes for a stronger frame. It's a minor thing, but I am concerned that one end of the fly can't be pulled away from the inner tent. If there is contact between the fly and the tent, this could allow transfer of rain or condensation from the fly to the inner. It would be so easy to just add a loop to the other end.
Everyone I've seen review a Kuiu tent has been pretty impressed with it. I'm curious about the Storm Star in case you get around to testing that out also ;) The main reason that I've been avoiding American tents for the most part is that so few pitch outer first like proper tents. Unless the inner is largely solid like in a mountaineering tent (when they HAVE inners), an inner first pitch is a design flaw. And you'd think that the tent designers based in Seattle surrounded by RAIN FOREST would account for pitching tents in rain, since there's a reason for why they are called "rain forests."
I looked on their site . The sale is still on. Great stakes too. Would make a hell of a good motorcycle summer tent with some high Rocky Mtn camping. Lot more affordable than my Hilleberg Hiltons and much lighter. It is cool looking. Even though it's not GREEN. All good Luke. From east Kentucky USA All good Nextime
I have the Storm Star and it's insane. Granted I'm not gonna put it through a fraction of what it's designed for, but I've been in it in some foul weather.
This is probably a stupid question Luke, but why don’t you keep your camping/hiking gear at Lone Wolf Mountain. This way it will be somewhat safe and won’t be damaged or destroyed like what happened during the hurricane?
Looks like a very cool tent, and I like the colors on both versions. However, for somebody like me who loves his Kilos Gear 25" wide sleeping pads, this is effectively a one-person tent. I loved the review.
Great tent with a lot of features. Would like to see you review the new x dome from Durston and see how it compares. I have watched videos on the new x dome and it looks great with a lot of great materials and features.
I've taken my xmid 1p out on ben nevis in the uk winter and had no problems with it. Most tents can be 4 season tents as long as you have the gear and they can stand wind and snow loads (like pyramids or 3 pole exoskeleton types) Rather than "seasons", i think tents should be catagorised as follows: - Windspeed test (wind tunnel) - snow load test (how much weight can it take to top) - Summit qualification (single skin, freestanding, bathtub connected to the fly) - doesnt want to turn into a parachute in the highest wind even though its bad for condensation) - 4 season non summit features (artic helliburg style or ultralight pyramid style?) dan duston has the x-dome which is very like the tent you reviewed. but it can be steaked with only 4 pegs, you can use your trekking poles to connect either end of the cross pole to strengthen for much higher loads. i think the poles maybe less rigid tho but the trekking poles make up for it. its also uk style fly first or inner first too :) its under 1kg. i've also seen Slingfin (very good tents) use similar features but they are fidily when doing fly first.
Durston is the goat of tents, hands down beats this offering from Kuiu and most others in the world of high tech quality gear...and priced less than this one
@@Fusildechasse true. also fly is polyester again too. since since the inner makes for the one sided vestibule it allows for a nice balance of vestibule and large, odd shaped inner for even longer pads/stuff etc. the trekking poles can also be used to pin out the fly door whilst supporting the tent meaning you need 1 less peg :) it just like how dan has stuck to the ethos of a 4 peg, actual freestranding exo-skel tent which could be guyed out to the hilt and supported with trekking poles when required
Fly first is the great feature in rain, but IMO not when the poles are outside the awning, you spend a certain amount of time to thread the poles through the sleeves. And also you lose some of inner value because of additional dimension between poles and fly
Bro, the brown groundsheet, heavier, is for earth, direct to ground, the grey is for interior, more "fabric-ey" lighter. i've been using 2 groundsheets for a while now, same, rugged one darker for outside, thinner lighter for inner. it's a game changer because my pad stays dry and clean even from "unavoidable" condensation. having 2 temperature differentials side by side really does the trick! it's wild. just did it before i watched this 😂 thermarest is bone dry. i've been using shingle layment. it's secret miracle material
HI LUKE 👋 LOVE THE COLORS ! MY HUDSON TRAILS TENT ⛺️ OR EASTERN MOUNTAIN SPORTS TENT ? HAD THE SLEEVES WITH OUT THE CLIPS FOR THE POLES WAS REALLY GREAT IN THE WIND & THUNDER STORMS ⛈️ MISS THAT TENT ⛺️ THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ONE 🙏 I'LL HAVE TO SEE ABOUT THE 3 PERSON ONE THE DOGS 🐕 🐕 LOVE GOING CAMPING WITH ME I JUST LEAVE ONE OF THE DOORS OPEN SO THEY CAN GO OUT WHEN THEY NEED TOO . BE SAFE ☺️ 🙏HAVE FUN ☺️ 🙏ENJOYED ☺️ 🙏GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES ☺️ 🙏THANK YOU ☺️ 🙏
Reminds me slightly of my Wolrus (brand) Mountain tent from 1997 or so. Except this only has four sides (Wolrus had six, along with three mesh windows and mesh roof vent). Too bad the zipper and my back went bad, or I would still be using it at 20 degrees +/-. Colder if I'd known back then about thermarest mattresses and the benefits of wearing a hoodie while sleeping.
Will this knock off my OG Eureka Timberline tent? I guess I will find out this weekend when I am camping for 3 days. I will admit the Eureka is interesting to get in and out of, but the Luminoodle light on the ridge pole works great.
Hmm, I didn't see you connect the poles into the ground sheet. When you mentioned it came with two ground sheets I was wondering if it's one of the designs where you can just use the groundsheet and the fly as a self-contained tarp-tent, losing just a little bit more weight by ditching the tent section. That may be why they included the lighter groundsheet. If interested, you might check that, and weigh the light ground sheet, poles and fly without the inner tent for comparison.
@@auskip07 I pitch the inner, outer, & footprint simultaneously. I like poles inside sleeves becasue they stay dry & are protected from wet. I have a Hilleberg Enan.
I have this tent and love it. I’ve only used it two times but it seems to be great and well thought out. I paid over 500$ a couple years ago once it was redesigned to the current version. Is it worth 500$? I don’t know but it’s definitely worth 3-400$ if you can get it on sale.
I take issue with the “nobody likes teletubby colored tents” because I do, and I would call them “colorful” which you seem to have an aversion to. I personally really don’t like the tactical style stuff. Also I have a very colorful cotopaxi fanny pack which you’d undoubtedly tease me about if you saw it. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose!
Awesome review Luke. I'm looking for a 4 season tent and Kuiu's Storm Star 2 person tent is one i am seriously looking at, do have any thoughts about the Storm Star?
Does the inner detach from the outer easily if needed? Fly first setup is great for setting up in the rain but I always figured it would be handy for tear down in the rain to keep your inner and outer separate (not an expert though, just a noob looking to get a tent).

78" divided by 12" is 6.5, but you stated that if you're 6' 5" or lower it's going to work for you. Which is still correct, but actually 78" is 6'6" so it may work for someone that tall. It does look like a good tent all the same. Luke, what country is it made in?
All of Kuiu gear is fantastic. I have a Divide for hunting pack, a 66L internal frame for backpacking/hunting trips, and their clothing options are fantastic. They're pricy, yes, but functionality and warmth is perfect. The main flaw is that all their clothes are very athletic cut. Especially good to know the 1,200 hydrostatic head rating was sufficient to keep your shelter's inner Dry.

Impressive.
I do have same tent, sleeping bag and clothes from KUIU. Superior quality.. Planing to buy 4 season tent too.
Please review the Kuiu Storm star! Never seen a bad review on it. Seems the ultimate bomber 4 season tent.
Great review on the mountain star. 👍
Love your honesty
Looks like a very cool tent, and I like the colors on both versions. However, for somebody like me who loves his Kilos Gear 25" wide sleeping pads, this is effectively a one-person tent. I loved the review.
Great tent with a lot of features. Would like to see you review the new x dome from Durston and see how it compares. I have watched videos on the new x dome and it looks great with a lot of great materials and features.
I've taken my xmid 1p out on ben nevis in the uk winter and had no problems with it. Most tents can be 4 season tents as long as you have the gear and they can stand wind and snow loads (like pyramids or 3 pole exoskeleton types)
Rather than "seasons", i think tents should be catagorised as follows:
- Windspeed test (wind tunnel)
- snow load test (how much weight can it take to top)
- Summit qualification (single skin, freestanding, bathtub connected to the fly) - doesnt want to turn into a parachute in the highest wind even though its bad for condensation)
- 4 season non summit features (artic helliburg style or ultralight pyramid style?)
dan duston has the x-dome which is very like the tent you reviewed. but it can be steaked with only 4 pegs, you can use your trekking poles to connect either end of the cross pole to strengthen for much higher loads. i think the poles maybe less rigid tho but the trekking poles make up for it. its also uk style fly first or inner first too :) its under 1kg.
i've also seen Slingfin (very good tents) use similar features but they are fidily when doing fly first.
Durston is the goat of tents, hands down beats this offering from Kuiu and most others in the world of high tech quality gear...and priced less than this one
@@Fusildechasse true. also fly is polyester again too. since since the inner makes for the one sided vestibule it allows for a nice balance of vestibule and large, odd shaped inner for even longer pads/stuff etc. the trekking poles can also be used to pin out the fly door whilst supporting the tent meaning you need 1 less peg :)
it just like how dan has stuck to the ethos of a 4 peg, actual freestranding exo-skel tent which could be guyed out to the hilt and supported with trekking poles when required
Fly first is the great feature in rain, but IMO not when the poles are outside the awning, you spend a certain amount of time to thread the poles through the sleeves. And also you lose some of inner value because of additional dimension between poles and fly
Great video.
You should try the Storm Star....
The pole bag said Easton they make archery arrows. I have used these arrows for over 45 years. They make a great quality product.
It's got the name of the tent on the bag! Lol
What do you mean you put the gray one inside the tent?
HI LUKE 👋
LOVE THE COLORS ! MY HUDSON TRAILS TENT ⛺️ OR EASTERN MOUNTAIN SPORTS TENT ? HAD THE SLEEVES WITH OUT THE CLIPS FOR THE POLES WAS REALLY GREAT IN THE WIND & THUNDER STORMS ⛈️ MISS THAT TENT ⛺️
THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ONE 🙏
I'LL HAVE TO SEE ABOUT THE 3 PERSON ONE THE DOGS 🐕 🐕 LOVE GOING CAMPING WITH ME I JUST LEAVE ONE OF THE DOORS OPEN SO THEY CAN GO OUT WHEN THEY NEED TOO .
BE SAFE ☺️ 🙏HAVE FUN ☺️ 🙏ENJOYED ☺️ 🙏GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES ☺️ 🙏THANK YOU ☺️ 🙏
I gotta stop watching your videos, I'm gonna go broke! haha Awesome video, keep it up!
Nice, good info
Reminds me slightly of my Wolrus (brand) Mountain tent from 1997 or so. Except this only has four sides (Wolrus had six, along with three mesh windows and mesh roof vent). Too bad the zipper and my back went bad, or I would still be using it at 20 degrees +/-. Colder if I'd known back then about thermarest mattresses and the benefits of wearing a hoodie while sleeping.
Like the music too!
Great review Luke. There is nothing like Experience. Keep up the S & H.
Dr Red .. Australia
I like the tent but it's way too expensive.
Luke, could you review the featherstone granite 2p tent please?
I've been waiting for this rent to be reviewed. 😅
Have you tried OEX tents from the UK? Extremely cheap backpacking tents. Rating highly in the uk and a lot to choose from
Nemo Hornet 2P...great tent IMO. Review?
In the uk .if you say thinks are “ sick “ it means they are bad , have to get my head round that it is the opposite in the US 🤷♀️🏴
Will this knock off my OG Eureka Timberline tent?
How bout a review of a ddhammocks frontline with the 3 x 3 meter tarp. I would love seeing that. Take care and peace to all.
do you prefer the clips vs the sleeves for your poles? Im a bigger fan of clips
And I'm a big fan of sleeves, just one of many reasons I bought the Hilleberg Enan.
@azclaimjumper curious why? Clips tend to offer faster setup
@@auskip07 I pitch the inner, outer, & footprint simultaneously. I like poles inside sleeves becasue they stay dry & are protected from wet. I have a Hilleberg Enan.
I still want to see what you think of the Berghause Grampian 2 and 3 tents.
Nice
Nice! 😊
Me too. My favorite colors are lemon- lime and turquoise. I find dull colors depressing.
You do a very good review.
Do you ever use a cot in a tent?
Have you tried the hill zero scout tent? If not you should give it a look it’s an awesome tent! Love the videos 🫡
Actually there’s also the Kuiu 4-season „Storm Star“ available if you must go out in winter season
