I have got the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 Dan and last winter i was side by side with my mate who has the Kuiu Storm Star and while the Nammatj stood up well in the wind , it was flapping and the Storm Star was Bomb Proof solid and there was absolutely no sign of any flapping. It's a very impressive tent indeed.

Have they started putting mesh on their vents yet though cuz that's the only downfall i see We have really bad mosquitoes😂 That's a deal killer for me

I've got a Storm Star and it's the business. Stood up to everything I've thrown at it and fills me with confidence, so well worth the money and I'd buy the same again in a heartbeat. Can't recommend enough.

This is my favorite tent for high mountain travel. While I have several very strong mountaineering tents, this one is almost as strong at 1/2 the weight! It’s a great tent and from time to time they put them on sale. I got mine for 376 pounds plus shipping.

  • @robertedgar7961
    @robertedgar7961 24 дні тому +1

In the right circumstances, the Stormstar is hard to beat. I use it for canoe camping where the weight isn't an issue. I wouldn't want to carry it for an extended backpacking trip (I use a Scarp 1 for this) but for shorter trips in bad weather the stability, room and ability to pitch it 'from the ground up' make it worth carrying. For me, one of the big advantages is the tautness of the inner, nearly as good as that of an inner first pitching tent like the Terra Nova Quasar. Previously I had a Hilleberg Soulo but although it stood up to wind well, the flapping of the inner wasn't conducive to a good sleep. There is a technique to closing the clips and during a 13 night trip on the Yukon they were never a problem. As others have commented, the higher level zips on the inner are not vents but allow access to the vents on the fly so in inclement weather you can close the vents on the outer without leaving the inner. Therefore putting mesh on the inner openings would be counter-productive. There are two massive mesh panels on the inner doors to vent the inner.

I've had this tent for a few years and had it out in some strong winds and epic rain. It had held up really well in all conditions. No flapping which for me makes a huge difference.
I think it's an absolute cracking tent.

Absolutely agree with you re the tents worth! All the comments from people here saying it is too expensive clearly have no idea of the prices of comparable products from other manufacturers such as Terra Nova, North Face, Hilleberg etc which are all MORE expensive (I have a Hilleberg and friends have Terra Nova's, and the Kuiu is easily their equivalent in quality, and better in design, obviously all in my opinion)

Keep up the good work with the channel, your's is the one I head to first along with my 14-year-old son. You're actually responsible for him being mad keen to gettjng started on camping when my old bones and muscles allow. There's a big age gap between us, he's 14 and I'm 72. He's mad keen to learn camping skills

    Thanks Dan,Interesting review.
I've never taken much notice before but after watching the Blot Outdoors Show the other day he mentioned that unlike you, who reviews tents, etcetera mostly to get freebies and offers from companies, he has decided not to take advantage of his massive following.
I think he has a good point and has gained a lot of respect from his fans.
You say that you paid for this tent out of your UA-cam payments, which is a good way of offsetting your tax, but of course, you are entitled to do that. However, would you ever consider being like Blot (Chris) and put a stop accepting freebies as well as what you are earning from YT?
By the way, Dan, whatever you decide to do, I'll always follow your awesome channel.

@@englishwoodsman I watch Blot as well, he does have freebies sometimes but only top stuff that he wants to recommend, such as an Ebike he had.
I don't know what that guy's on about not spending your UA-cam money, it's what it's there for, and why people pay Patreon to support channels, so you can buy stuff like this and create more content. It''s appreciated by people who like to see tents like this when they're thinking of buying one themselves.
Some people don't appreciate all the work it takes creating videos, and think it's money for nothing. You earned it so spend it on whatever helps grow your channel. Nobody with an ounce of common sense will criticise that. Looking forward to seeing your first camp in the KUIU!

What Dan is saying is that whatever freebies he gets is given back to his subscribers, whereas and as you say Blot also has freebies such as ebikes etcetera, which he gives away to his family.
That in itself is not a problem!
Personally whatever anyone wants to do with their money and gifts is up to them. It's nobody else's business.

Blot Outdoors is up to his old tricks again.
Why on earth does he think it's OK to mention other UA-camrs' business affairs regarding accepting free gifts from companies for mentioning their products?
And then, in the same breath tell us that the 3 E-bike's that he was given were shared out amongst his family members.
As if that wasn't blatant contradictory, he tell his followers that he is now expecting to receive a folding E-bike that he will keep for himself.
The reason that I've just unsubscribed to his channel is not because he contradicts himself but because he drags the names of other UA-camrs into his pathetic and mostly drunken narrative.
Carry on doing what you do, Daniel. Your subscribers know and respect your honest channel.

There are drainage eyelets at the base of each of the pole pockets, so it isn't a problem. Just a tip, when taking the tent down and removing the poles, you need to squeeze the pole pockets at the base to open them up a little before trying to pull the pole out, otherwise the very end attached to the shockcord through the poles gets left behind!

I use my Vango Soul 200 all year, in winter storms I just camp lower down in a valley or near a natural shelter.
Your older tents were more than upto the job, just dont be daft and pitch on a exposed hill top in windy weather.
Mountain Rescue must dred youtube videos of campers on hill tops in storms, look for sensible places to pitch instead.

Hi Dan, did you have to pay VAT and Duty, or did the website price include them? The website says it’s £549, but the delivery info says taxes are EXCLUDED. If this is correct, this would then cost approximately £700 all-in!

For me there isn't a better 4 season tent at the weight, size and prices. It's the weight of a Hilleberg Soulo, loads more space and much cheaper yet just as robust.

Daniel is far from a fool. He works hard and puts a great deal of effort into his channel.
The fact that he's spent his own money to show his subscribers what they get for their buck and then gives his items back to his subscribers makes him a very generous and intelligent UA-camr.
