REI is having a sale right now so the REI Half Dome SL 3+ is only $279 till July 4th 2024
Just ordered my X-mid 2 a few days ago and always get purchase anxiety, so this video was definitely reassuring to say the least.
Pitching the X-Mid on Uneven ground:
Most folks don't do this right because they confuse elements of the tent. Almost every other tent will require you to stretch out the guy lines to get good mechanical leverage to hold the fly taut. The X-mid is NOT like that. The walls (in particular the corners) ARE the guy lines; the fly itself does double duty as fly and guy lines. No matter the ground evenness, ONLY peg the 4 corners first and make sure the guy lines are choked all the way in (this lets you see which ones need to be extended and things will only go one direction... up). Choking the guy lines at the corners in also keeps the stakes/guy lines in the correct angularity to get a good solid pitch; you do not want to extend the guy lines further from the fly than you absolutely have to. Set the poles, and get your ridgeline parallel with the horizon as you set the ground-to-fly gap you need for the conditions. AFTER you do that, then go back and add the extra pegs. If you use all the peg points to start with, you'll never get a good pitch.
Ordered a Xmid 2p a week ago after seeing positive reviews and this just reaffirmed my decision. Thank you!
The Naturehike Mongar2 is free standing as well. If you wanted extra room, there is an available vestibule sold separately.
The Nemo Dragonfly is my absolute favorite tent of all time. Love that tent so much
Just bought the backpack version because the way it packs down can't wait for fall
I just bought an x-mid 2 and I'm glad that this video validated what I was already hearing from everyone else! I'm mostly going to be using it for me but I love the option to have another person join and be able to fit and I like that it's double walled. Excited to try it out!
Thank you, exactly what I was looking for the last weeks for my next year trip to Scotland
Tarptent DoubleRainbow Li.
Too small realistically for two people and really fragile. Cool tent otherwise though
Agree with Tarptent. Could even add on the Dipole 2 Li or for 4 person the hogback! I feel like Tarptent always gets looked over by the durston gearheads
I went with the original non-li and am fine with the modest increased weight for the huge price savings. It's a nice tent and I've no complaints.
I like your idea about the two tents. I am a scout leader with both my boys in. For camping we used a Colman 4 person tent for the three of us. When we go camping now in the troop the kids sleep separately from the adults so it is a good way to start that separation. Have them next to each other to start and as they get older move them father away.
Both the boys discovered hammock camping so now I am in a tent by myself which is two big and they are swinging with the breeze.
Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 is noticeably absent from this list.
A great freestanding tent.
Solid suggestions!
Dragonfly 3P is outstanding for two. Perfect space. Amazing storage. Gorgeous tent!
I liked the video, made me think about summer camping 😂😂 maybe someday, that been truck camping season... have 1 night in the msr frontrange at the end of winter. Loving it over my first tent, nemo kunai. Dragonfly looks like a better setup/design
The x-mid is my favorite! Just loooove it. As you said, when you get used to it… 🥰👍❤️
omg justin!!! i wish your wife and baby health and easy delivery!!! congrats man!
I have a zpacks trio, love love love love it. And I carry a 77cm wide sleeping pad, I go full luxury when it comes to weekend trips
Great video and lots of food for thought 🤔Have you had any experience with Big Sky International ?
Family Backpacking! Yes it was a struggle figuring out how to do it. Ultimately I came to the conclusion that the largest reasonably weighted backpacking tent for 4 wide pads is the Copper Spur 5p. (The 4p doesn’t work) I have 3 boys and they are now 13, 11 and 8 so it was just easier to have one tent for all if us and then I’m not up all night worrying about them in another tent. I think all in its about 8lbs which isn’t to bad for how big the tent is. We aren’t trekking to far usually anyways. I also have the Half Dome 3+ which fits 3 wide pads. That part came out a little weird in your video. Great tent for when I’m only taking two of my kids. I know…it gets complicated. But over the years I’ve collected a tent for all occasions 😂. Next time you’re in AZ if you ever want to review the BA Copper Spur 5p let me know. You’re more than welcome to haul it out there 😂. I call it the Taj Mahal.
Another great list. Thanks.
Is Marmot Tungsten 3p better than Nemo Dragonfly 3p?
Hey Justin!! How are you Sir? Make a video with the best 4 seasons tent!! I wanna go camping in the next winter!!!
I have the Nemo Dragonfly 2P and that is a phenomenal tent. At some point I want to try a treking pole tent, but for a freestanding tent and a solo person this is a palace.
I have an xmid 2 solid. It does not seem long enough for me at 6’4. Do you have a recommendation for me?
Do you store your 2p tents in the stuff sacks, or loosely?
I have a North Face 4 season (lower 48) 3-person tent. It's a bit heavy but it gives plenty of room for me and my big furry bed hog friend. Had the tent for years and I don't think North Face makes it anymore. But while I've graduated to lighter tents, I still use it on occasion.
Love my Durston X-Mid 2. It's still lightweight with easy setup and good functionality. That's what i like in a tent. My downside is the 15d floor. I would like it more durable, since i don't mind extra grams. Ultralightist would go for dyneema anyways 🤷♂️
Hey, I also use an Enlightened Equipment stuff sack for my X-Mid ! Lol
The Naturehike Mongar is going for £129 at the moment on the Amazon UK site. Great tent tbf.
What would be the best "mild winter" tent? By this I mean a tent that can withstand some snow loading, but doesn't need to be a full-on expedition tent.
For solo trips, I actually use x-mid 1p in winter, but the 2p version becomes too wide for its height and doesn't shed snow well.
for budget I would defiantly look at the tarptent rainbow line (honestly tarptent in general is just a great buy)
Yeah…no. It’s more money than a Xmid, heavier and you have to seam seal it yourself. They will seam seal for an extra $35, so at that point it’s DEFINITELY more expensive than a Xmid
Tarptent is not a budget option , they might be worth the money but definitely not inexpensive.
@@rgmALCoptional liner for a double wall, uses two trekking poles at both ends making it freestanding and has a dyneema version. That sounds like a decent reason to be more expensive. Customizable and versatile
Have you tired the Slingfin Portal 2? I have found it to be a great tent.
It’s funny that you say the dragonfly is the best tent in wind. I live in Alaska and so weather can be brutal here and I’ve bent the poles on my dragonfly tent during a windy outing. I think the trekking pole tents are better in wind due to the trekking poles generally being stronger than traditional tent poles
Living in northern Scotland most of those have a couple more issues to add to the list - inner first pitch tents are deadly when you're hiking in a windy, rainy place, and when it's not windy you've got midges, so in my mind the tent needs to pitch outer first or just be a single wall one.
- Naturehike Mongar is a great budget shout, but in my mind the Tagar 2 is an impressive option at 1.3kg
- Zpacks and Durston Pros are just stupidly expensive when you add the taxes and customs and shipping to Europe
- about the Nemo being freestanding + light + affordable -> check out Big Sky International Mirage for even cheaper and similar weight, the bonus with Big Sky is that they offer shorter section poles so bikepackers have an easier time packing them
Despite the OSMO material of the dragonfly having extra water repellency, it still only has a paltry 1500mm waterproofing on the fly. Do you find it holds up in wet conditions as we typically need a minimum 3000-4000mm waterproofing in the Cape mountains in SA 🇿🇦?
No Tiger Wall?? Any reasons?
Where does the Big Agnes Copper Spur end up ?
Maybe also interesting in terms of freestanding tents: the Exped Mira II HL has a minimum weight of 1150g, fits two wide sleeping pads, and works quite fine with six tent stakes.
I have the sea to summit telos. It sets up easy and soo fast. It has a lot of headroom. You can also separate the tent because the tent comes in different packages (so if you are with two p you can split the weight). If its not raining you can take of the rainfly and look at the stars. Never had an issue with rain so far (if you set up correctly). The only downside is that it is more narrow at the feet end so you have to look if the sleeping pad fits with 2 p but i didn’t have that issue yet
The Telos is a great tent and could have been a third place finisher in a number of categories. The two changes I think it needs are a lower price point and a better fly material. If it ticked those two boxes, it would be THE tent. I really really like the Telos overall.
The Duplex Zip is a smidge heavier than the X-Mid Pro2 but the Duplex Classic is lighter.
I approve this video 🤣
What about Slingfin Portal 2 or 3 …?
You should have consider the Nemo Dagger as one of the roomiest 2p tent on the market. That thing is incredible!
Isn't the classic duplex 507g & 45" wide? So, lighter than the Durston & similar width...
I miss the Lanshan 2 (non pro) in that list. Just did a Greenland Tour with it. For me it has to go on the list for maybe the best budget lightweight tent. Cant get more bang for your buck. I paid like 150$. Not every one can afford to pay 800 bucks for a tent... so good for beginner as well. Greetz
Justin, how about best 4 season tent? I'm looking for this type of tent that I can use any time in any weather. I live in Finland so it gets really cold in the winter time. So obviously it has to have stove capability, but also it should be a good summer tent. I hike and camp mostly alone, so no need for super spacious tent. Maybe a two person tent would be ideal. Best that I have found (not bought yet) is the Pomoly Locomotive 2. A tent that is "best all-around tent", but also 4 seasons, so REALLY the only tent you need, ever. ;)
What would you say is a good budget backpacking tent for people that live in Europe as most of these are very difficult to get if you live in Europe and if they do deliver delivery is really expensive so it’s not really budget friendly anymore
Decathlon has some decent gear. Plus there's gear available to Europeans that arnt available in the states.
New dipole maybe they will make a dyneema double wall version or their ultra
Why the Nemo dragonfly instead of hornet?
Nice vid mate!
Searching a tent and been thinking about the hornet2 and xmid 2
The hornet is really a 1.5 person tent. It’s great for 1 with room for gear inside, or a dog.
The side walls slope in to a narrow cross bar in the ceiling. 2 people can fit laying down if you have 20” wide sleeping pads, but both can’t sit up at the same time without brushing their heads on the walls.
Thanks for adding the budget options, my car was cheaper than those tents 😬😬
You need another category- most storm worthy tent. Your Megamid by BD would be in the running for that.
I don't really cherry pick my trips and I have never felt the need for a crazy storm-worthy tent here in North America. The Dragonfly and X-Mid tents would likely handle anything I could ever want to throw at them. If I was heading to Patagonia, Iceland, or some of the windier European places, I might assess what tent I was bringing in a bit more detail.
I agree storm-worthiness is important for a lot of people out there, but not something I can test with any sort of authority.
Review the Slingfin Portal 2 please.
Yeah I discovered slingfin just recently. I'm sure you've already seen the one or two videos on just a few of slingfin's products. Hardly a light weight tent in their lineup and I've read a lot of quibbling about their quality. Faulty zips, questionable guy out placements and an array of design oversights. Visually amazing tents though.
I really love my NatureHike Vik for 1 person, and I see the 2 persons is suppose to be 1.6 kg, which is impressive for a freestanding tent. It’s not perfect of course, but the price is very affordable. Im unsure if this model will still be available for long or not.
The problem with the Vik is that being a solid walled single wall tent it has condensation problems.
@@lakorai2 the single walled doesn’t create more condensation, just makes it more likely to drop on you. But many people actually prefer single walled tent because they let them wipe away any humidity. I personally never really found the condensation to be any big problem.
I love my Vik 2. Sets up quick. Great pitch and looks the business. Easy functioning but…on occasions for goodness knows what reason, maybe pitched too low to the ground and not enough ventilation the condensation has been bad. The thing is because it pitches real well when the rain hits it it’s like a drum so all the condensation just disperses with every rain drop. Great for drier weather though and really light for backpacking.
Man, we really don't have much in the ultralight freestanding category :(. There are some tents on the horizon that may change that though with the Tarptent's announcement and Durston's X-dome response to that. The Tarptent double rainbow still seems like a good option to use in the meantime.
I also want to know if the scouting all-rounder, REI half-dome, and where it sits in the midst of everything works. There are plenty of options in that price and weight range that are still great even if any of them aren't winning awards.
Did you test any mountain hardware tents?
@@JustinOutdoors I have two, a buddy of mine gets 60% off. That makes me okay with any faults 😂
Have you tested any Tarptents? I have some of them on my short list, but don't see many reviewers testing them....🤷🏼♂️
In the past, Tarptent hasn't been that interested in getting tents into the hands of reviewers. I am going to try again with the Double Rainbow if they release the single walled version with a silpoly fly.
Forget the tents: congratulations 👶🍼
the inconviences of a transparent fly should be a big factor in tent comparisons.
Hillberg Anjan 2 ✅
Never seen you do anything on tarptent - is it hard to get in CA?
Tarptent sells to Canada. And since many of their tents are made in the US it qualifies for NAFTA, so no import duty or bs brokerage fees.
@@lakorai2 well the question still remains then haha, wonder why he hasn't ever tried and/or reviewed their tents
Maybe beg Dan for a X-Mid 2 Pro +, 52 inches wide. I love mine, tons of room and crazy light.
Amazon for me, 100 dollars… 2 poles and a fly that goes all the way to the ground. Maybe a tad heavy.
Please check out and review paria outdoor products! I think they could be a real budget contender!
Paria tents are rebadged Naturehike and 3F UL Gear tents.
Zion = Mongar
Bryce = CloudUP
Arches = LanShan
Why does nobody look to hyperlite for a 4 person tent? Double walled extremely light as far as 4ps go, rivals some 2p freestanding tents in weight but if you're considering two 2 person tents for a family of four you're not to far from the price of 1 hyperlite 4p. and you could carry it for a solo or duo trip when not taking the family.
Tarptent Hogback beats the REI 3+ all day. Silpoly, lighter weight and is a 4p tent.
3:09 I don't understand why people hate on the xmid footprint, the 2+ has a *smaller* footprint than the duplex and that is not even taking into consideration the super long guylines on each corner and peaks of the duplex...
@@RB-fn3lt Manufacturer specs:
Xmid 2+: 100" x 85"
DUPLEX: 100" x 93" _without_ guylines
@@RB-fn3lt There is literally nothing to interpret. The published specs for the xmid 2+ are 100" by 85" and the Duplex is 100" by 93" without even considering the six super long guy lines. Can you upload a video showing that these sizes are wrong? And please tag Dan Durston so he can comment on why he would put false specs on his website :)
1. Problem. Tent is not something what you bring just to setup so you can look at it. Its supostu protect you from elements like high win, rain and storms. Most of those tents will leak and break if you are caught in some bigger storm.
Why don't any of you guys over the pond talk about Big Sky International? Strange as it's a US company and good quality gear
Paria Bryce is a legit 2P tent
How is the Paria Bryce not in the budget tent category? Way lighter, tested by dozens of backpacking channels and way roomier for $150
Single entry 2P tents is a non-starter for me. The 2P Bryce is significantly more expensive at $175 and doesn't look to be that much roomier.
Who the heck wants to sleep head to foot in a two person tent. This would be a dealbreaker for me.
And if you want a tent that will not break down in really challenging weather conditions, and will serve you 10-15, even 30 years, then get a Hilleberg or a Fjällraven. Yeah, they are not UL.
Gossamer Gear the Two has left the chat…
Activities 😂 in Scotland we have different names for that
How does a 3p tent end up on the best of a 2p category? I call BS! Tarp tent Dipole 2 for the win.
2 person tent review and we have a roomy tent called a trio?!?😂
i hate how all of the best tents use hiking poles. I dont like using poles so I want a tent that doesnt require them
You haven't heard about the Lanshan brand? Lnashan 2 is better than the Mongar 2 and it's budget friendly than Durston. It uses trekking poles, cheaper and far lighter than Mongar 2 and much roomier. You should check that out
Haha when you try to get your kids to love camping but they tolerate it. 😢😂
I'm sorry but the Mongar 2 is not 1,8 kg. It's 2,2 kg. Maybe it's lighter if you don't use the pegs, but since you do in the video... the total weight that you present is too low.
Hey there, I've weighed mine and it is 1875 including the stakes and all the stuff sacks. Without the three stuff sacks (for tent, poles, and stakes) it is probably 1800g. This does not include the 200g ground sheet. Cheers.
This is for the 20d nylon btw. If you got yours in 210t polyester it's probably a bit heavier. Mine also packs down MUCH smaller than he showed in the video. Not sure why his is so clunky.
Zero offerings from Tarptent. A major oversight and disservice to your viewers when many outperform your ‘best’ tent picks
In the past, tarptent hasn't been interested in me testing out their tents. In light of comments in this thread, I have reached back out inquiring about a couple that inteigue me.
first!
Hm i stop watching after 20sec. My two priorities are: durability and waterproof ability. Everything else is less important.
