I'm the guy who recently thanked you for helping me with my recovery from lumbar spinal stenosis surgery that robbed me of the use of my legs. I'm now walking, clumsily, but I'm improving. I recently added the piriformis stretch with rotation and leg extension that you demonstrated. It led to a leap forward in my legs functioning more normally. I realized that it's one of the specific motions I have been missing in my routine. Thank you again.
Dr. Ennis, I put my canes away for good 4 weeks ago and am walking on my own again, about 11 months after lumbar stenosis surgery. It feels a bit forced, but walking is improving daily. The exercises I picked up from your videos are part of my daily exercise routine first thing every morning, and will be for the rest of my life. The effort was worth it. I am forever grateful.
How bad is the stenosis? I'm mild to mod at L5 - S1 and am worried that is where I'm headed. I'm 59 and live alone and don't need that at all - canes and surgeries. Scary. Glad you're better, though. I have enough problems with r. cuff partial, weird very light numbness occasionally in legs that could be part of the mild stenosis. It has no effect on me physically - yet, and it's been this way off and on for a number of years. I'm 230 at 5-10 1/2 and need to drop some tonnage but am so frustrated after rotator cuff (no pain but significant weakness with overhead presses on left side) that I've shut down and let it get best of me.

When i lie on bed sometimes I'm doing some of those movements because my spine feels happy and relaxed. Now i have a whole set to do. Thank you doctor.
I looked at these as motions to do when backpacking before emerging for the day from the tent or tarp shelter. That may sound odd, but as I have aged, getting out of the tent and moving with some ease is more critical than more miles.
Thanks so much. I feel like I needed some movement before bed, too lazy to do yoga, and didn't want to get myself wound up. This was the perfect solution.
This instruction is great, because in bed I do something similar but not as orchestrated. I’m always concerned with my neck and shoulder alignment, so seeing how to manage this is helpful. Also the last 2 exercises isn’t something I’d have thought of on my own. Thanks a lot Dr. Kristi.

Thanks so much this is a game-changer for me. I'm retired but still like to work on my vehicles. Often I get pains no surprise and these stretches help so much I do them in the morning too. But take it easy folks you can over-stretch and that can make things worse, take to sow and easy don't push it especially if you are older..
I never knew the name of the first stretch. I've done it many times in an attempt to alleviate both pain in the piriformis and sciatica pain. Sometimes I use an old scarf to help my knee come towards my chest (I've had issues with both knees and sometimes that's the only way I can perform the stretch). But the idea of holding them and rocking is a good one. And since I often focus on breathing deeply before bed anyway. I think doing these stretches before bed is a great way to end the day. Plus I always feel relaxed after stretching. Thanks for letting me know what the name of the first stretch is called and for giving me some stretches to do before bed.
I have the green strap with loops for stretching. You can put your wrist in the upper loops to help bring the stretch closer using your arms. Look up stretching straps. It's green. You can do knee stretches to help with the stretch. Loosing up your knees if possible.
