E ngau mai ana te hōtoke
The winter chill bites me
Waiho mai ahau kia noho
Let me be
Haere, hoatu koutou
Go on ahead, without me
Nau mai te waru whakahihiko
I welcome the electric vibe summer brings
Me puta rā? Ehara
Shall I go out? Hell yeah
Hanahana ana ko taku kiri
My skin is glowing
Noho ana i te rēhia
In the pursuit of pleasure
Kei taku taha taku kaingākau
With my lover at my side
E te tī, te tā, tahuti mai rā
Let’s go, one and all
Ki te ina i ngā hīhī o te rā
To bathe in the sun’s rays
Taku rite, ko Hinemoana
I’m like Hinemoana, the Ocean Maiden
E puta i te pō ki te ao mārama (rama, rama, rama)
Let’s escape the darkness and enter the world of light
Titiro ki mua, hoake tāua
Let’s look and move forward
Wai uri, wai pounamu
Aquamarine coloured waters shimmer
Kani ana ngā mōrehu
As the survivors dance
Whiua aku māharahara ki waho rā
I throw away all of my troubles
Hinengaro wātea
My mind is free
Hanahana ana ko taku kiri
My skin is glowing
Noho ana i te rēhia
In the pursuit of pleasure
Kei taku taha taku kaingākau
With my lover at my side
E te tī, te tā, tahuti mai rā
Let’s go, one and all
Ki te ina i ngā hīhī o te rā
To bathe in the sun’s rays
Taku rite, ko Hinemoana
I’m like Hinemoana, the Ocean Maiden
E puta i te pō ki te ao mārama (rama, rama, rama)
Let’s escape the darkness and enter the world of light
Piri mai Hine-raumati
Stay close Hine-raumati, the Summer Maiden
Taukamo kia puta rā koe ki te ao mārama, rama, mārama
Blink and enter the world of light
To be honest, this sounds even better than the English version. The language matches the song absolutely perfect. Great stuff.
Couldn't agree more
Yaaaaaaasssss
Tbh I like the regular version just flows more the other Te Reo Maori version of the other music is pretty awesome
Agreed ❤️
hey shagge I definitely understand what you mean by this version being better than the original English one, usually non-English versions of English songs groove better👍🏽
QUEEN releasing maori versions (this is an official language of New Zealand btw for those who don’t know)
Thank you!! I was wondering what language this was
@@bootyjig921 me too.
OMGGG MY FIRST TIME HEARING IT!!
I like the vibe that the language gives me (sorry if it is offensive)
i thought it was Moanas language
This makes me want to cry. Lorde is so true to her land and the people of it. She really understands life, and this inspires me so much, as a maori. And this furthers my appreciation for her. 🙌🏽☀️🌿
Ikr, its the bare minimum, but is good to know that a really popular artist, pays her respects to Maori and Aotearoa! It makes me want to cry as well!
@@marajonika3665 I'd say it's a little more than the bare minimum for her as an individual. She put in a lot of work for this mini album and ALL the proceeds are going to Forest and Bird and Te Hua Kawariki Charitable Trust. I agree NZ as a whole is only now finally doing the bare minimum, but she's sticking her neck out here and could get massive backlash.
@@sarah-jane3627 I didn't mean it in a way that "she's not doing enough" I meant this is a first for Te Reo Maori to be exposed to a large following of predominantly "white" individuals and its a big push from Lorde herself to be sharing the native reo, because she understands that Aotearoa is where she grew up, I dont understand the backlash one would receive from doing that tbh.
@@marajonika3665 exactly.
@@marajonika3665 You know the wokes are gonna call her a vulture lol
I love that she changed the lyrics so that the Maori would fit the original rhythm
It wasn't all her, the translation was done by Hēmi Kelly
@@Lenny-ue8hk of course it wasn't, she probably doesn't even know maori
@@federicoxxx.jjjh.f2sss348 Most people in new zealand know some basic Māori, but yeah. My point is we need to give credit to the people who actually did it.
@@Lenny-ue8hk not saying we shouldn't, but credit where credit is due. Lorde had the idea, it's a lorde song and she chooses who to credit on the name. It's like saying every song that's not written by the artist that sings it should have the other name on the title of the song.
I'm so happy she decided to do this. Honouring the people of the land she lives in. Now I can't help but think what songs like A World Alone would sound like in Maori 😌
she received massive backlash for not saying a word the months during the BLM movement last year in America and not talking about racism in nz, makes sense for her to do this

I had no idea this language existed, but let me say: THIS SONG WAS MADE TO BE SUNG IN THIS LANGUAGE!! It sounds better than the English version, even though I can't understand a thing.
This is my native language here in New-Zealand ( Aotearoa ), it is called Māori :D thank u for your appreciation!
And the European nzers want our language wiped from existence

Thank you Lorde for having the courage to sing this song in my heritage language, and for using music to promote the revitalisation of te reo Māori.
This totally expanded the meaning of the song to me
Falling in love. Enjoy listening to te reo with her melodies. Crisp, clear, unrushed and not so many words squashed into a sentence. A Maori waiata we can learn to sing along. Reminds me of our kuia in the 70's telling stories to keep us entertained. Few words, maximum impact.
I read that Hinewehi Mohi crafted the words for her... pure poetry.
@@toamaori That doesn't surprise me. Ataahua.
This is amazing, my grand father was beaten at school for speaking his native tongue, & it was almost completely lost to us children. anyway. it was troublesome to be seen as one of those “inferior” folk even if unspoken, a much darker time in the world of NZ I’m glad has passed. Such a beautiful way with words, A very poetic & powerful language, & the native pursuit for care of the land we depend upon.
Go Lorde
It sounds even more beautiful and fitting in Maori. And I love how the lyrics are rewritten. Mārama is enchanting to hear
Honestly the album in Maori subtracts all the "hey guys I smoke weed now" lyrics and clarifies the meaning of everything
🤣
Im from Latin America, never heard this language before and it is BEAUTIFUL. Thanks Lorde for blessing me w your art again and thanks to all Maoris for sharing their beautiful culture with the rest of the world. I hope Latin America learn better about how to treat our indigenous roots and our Amazonia
Not the queen giving me chills in a language that I have no understanding of.❤️
Maori is the Indigenous language of New Zealand
@Minami Uchida nah keep the culture away from cultureless people
@@daylamcapri6680 that has been an issue I have been juggling in my head. As much as I love te reo Maori being sang. I really don’t want people appropriating it, I have already had issues with a white TikTok creator who swears that they are a quarter maori and I fear more white people will begin to claim whakapapa that is not their own. It will be interesting to see the effect this song has on American understanding of maori people beyond them mocking us for haka or covering their skin with kirituhi
i rly, rly like solar power but this just ate up the english version! this sounds so beautiful and the positive energy of the song flows so effortlessly and naturally too 😭🙏🤍 i'm in love with this! thank you, lorde 🙇♂️
In my opinion, this is waaaay better than the original 🌹
Music is one of the most basic things in life. Music is what teaches us.

I'm gonna go and convince myself that these are the official versions and the english ones are just the translations catered to her western audiences.
This is for a western audience too.

Am I the only one obsessed with this version and how ancestral it sounds? This is just too good. It really makes you want to connect deeper to your land wherever you are from!
She got the lyrics translated by a Maori language. She then also got help with pronunciation from other experts as well. Its so good cause she didnt try and do this on her own.
Wow you so got it. Expressed that perfectly. I'm moved . Maori express what you have said as "Tangata whenua " meaning people of the land. We are all connected. I see you brother

YOU ARE AWESOME LORDE!!..Beautiful the Maori language
gave me chills when I recognised Māori words I've learnt in the lyrics :')
Here after the Maori party of New Zealand petitioned to change the official name of the country to 'Aotearoa' (the land of the long white cloud). Jacinda Ardern supports more usage of the term. However, the former deputy prime minister called it 'left winged radical bulldust'.
I think that is the loveliest name for a country ever.
I don’t know why some people are so against our country being named in my native language, a language that actually originated from Aotearoa instead they wanna keep insisting to use a name that’s Dutch. It’s makes no sense at all, plus Aotearoa is a really gorgeous name and describes our country better then the Dutch description of it. Like wouldn’t it make more sense for our country to have its own identity instead of a name that was given from foreigners
@@1313__Shinobi__Mercede My exact take on this too, like why is our country’s name still Dutch when Māori and Sign language is the official languages of our country. Not Dutch and not even English is an official language of the country, so why do idiots keep trying to ban a name that’s in our offical language. That’s so stupid
@@graemehenderson1743 Your attitude in this comment is something to be proud of. I wish everybody who lives somewhere taken over by whites from the native people could take on that humble outlook about their countries history of oppression.
