Lorde - Mood Ring (Lyrics)
I’m tryna blow bubbles but inside
Can’t seem to fix my mood
Today it’s as dark as my roots
If I ever let them grow out
Now all of my oceans have riptides
Can’t seem to find what’s wrong
The whole world is letting me down
Don’t you think the early 2000s seem so far away?
Ladies, begin your sun salutations
Transcendental in your meditations
Love and light
You can burn sage, and I’ll cleanse the crystals
We can get high, but only if the wind blows
Just right
I can’t feel a thing
I keep looking at my mood ring
Tell me how I’m feeling
Floating away, floating away
I’m tryna get well from the inside
Plants and celebrity news
All the vitamins I consume
Let’s fly somewhere eastern, they’ll have what I need
Ladies, begin your sun salutations
Pluto in Scorpio generation
Love and light
You can burn sage, and I’ll cleanse the crystals
We can get high, but only if the wind blows
Just right
I can’t feel a thing
I keep looking at my mood ring
Tell me how I’m feeling
Floating away, floating away
All the sad girls sing
We’ll keep dancing til the mood rings
Tell us how we’re feeling
Floating away, floating away
Take me to some kinda place
Anywhere
Watch the sun set, look back on my life
I just wanna know, will it be alright?
#Lorde #SolarPower
i feel like this song’s lowkey talking abt toxic positivity these days & that it’s okay to feel lost, uncertain & empty despite having tried everything you could - what an absolute relatable bop
It’s also about getting high
Thats exactly her point! Finally someone get it! Lol
yeah that’s def the vibe she implies in the newsletter!
@@Alilia007 newsletter? :O
yes! if you read her newsletter today she talks about how white women have culturally appropriated this idea of wellness and how problematic/harmful the crystals and smudging and such can be. And also how ridiculous some of it is lol. And she talks about how a lot of this is satire but people just don’t get it. She’s making fun of it!!
Edit: since y’all haven’t read it, this is a direct quote. “The general realisation that many wellness practises adopted by white women have rough consequences for indigenous peoples.” And she links to educational articles about the harm of these practices

yes. If you read her newsletter that went out today she calls out white women for how appropriating "wellness" things like smudging and crystals is dangerous and can be bad for indigenous cultures.
@@lizalove91 I need to read that! as an indian I really appreciate that she’s aware of it and talking about it. it’s not an accident most of the people in this seem to be white women.

This song just feels so nostalgic. I can see influences in sound from Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morissette, Natalie Imbruglia, etc, in general just early pop music you used to hear on the radio. Lorde still has her melancholy magic just in case we need it to "bring us back"
Yes! I definitely picked up on the 90s vibe too..
The verse and pre-chorus guitar riff/progression sounds identical to Jack Johnson's "Flake". Maybe that's why.

I think the last line: "I just wanna know, will it be alright" Perfectly sums up the song. We are always chasing the feeling of being happy or doing what others are doing to get rid of anxiety and stress (like burning sage and using crystals and vacationing to east because they "might have what I need") But in the end we just feel emotionless. Like we are suppose to be happy and "healing" but we are not. So we just ask ourselves in the end after doing all this to get peace is: I just wanna know, will it be alright?
I've burned sage, oregano, black pepper along with chicken thighs, garlic, tomato paste, a can of tomatoes and white whine today... It healed my hunger.
I love Solar Power, people were not ready for this amazing era. Mainstream culture can fuck off. Lorde presented us with an amazing sound, amazing theme, fantastic cinematography, a giant respect for the world and for art and authenticity even when you are a massive pop star. Dont change her.
All true!

It's too esoteric. This is the only song from it that I enjoy.

@@NaNa-km3fv never heard about it but sounds interesting. I hope people get how ironic this song is, it's definitely a theme in the album. People are so self centered disguising their apathy with good behaviors and self improvement (meditation, vitamins, books...) when in fact they couldn't be more disconnected and numb. It's now become a trend to have your sh*t together and be well put when it's the exact opposite.

Just so everyone’s aware, Lorde actually came forward and admitted that ‘Mood Ring’ and the music video are satire! In her email news letter, she wrote that it’s a commentary on wellness culture, as well as how white women appropriate spiritual practices from minority and indigenous groups. The blond Lorde that we see in the video isn’t actually Lorde, but a character that represents the appropriative white woman, who might in turn capitalize off of spirituality practices that were never hers. But even then, Lorde says she has empathy for people who are a part of wellness culture because it’s important to have a sense of peace and understanding, especially in these crazy times we live in. She writes, “We’re living through wild times, and it’s tough to begrudge anyone the methods they employ to feel sane, questionable though they may be.”
I'm literally dying with all those "white blonde fake influencers" sharing this song not realizing that they are being satirized. I hate them all lmao dumb bitches.

Race is a barrier to enjoy religion? Not mattering your ecthnicity, you can and are free to preach any faith. Yo do not neet to be specifically asian to enjoy meditation and buddhaism, or scandinavian to enjoy asatru, or greek for praising Zeus...
@@martinjugolin2087 I don't think race matters when it comes to the enjoyment or practice of any religion. BUT it does matter if you are making money off of a religion that you have studied for 3 months. There are indigenous cultures that seriously practice certain faiths, appropriation occurs when other cultures move in and take parts of those religious and wellness practices and sell them. There are nuances and deep spiritual meaning that are completely lost in many new age examples of appropriation and that is a wicked shame.
Cultural appropiation is bullshit
I love how this song is basically just satire on superficial spirituality while still being a complete bop
let's roll a joint and meditate. Let's destroy something that meant to build us.
at what point does the satire become the thing it's satirizing? like this is her weakest album to date tbh
@@kg7219 you say like its a bad thing, when actually she gave us two powerful masterpieces at 15 and 19yo. the way i see it she chose to make a more relaxed album this time, for the first time in her career. (and its good, not as intense as PH and Melodrama, but good)
k g / I mean, I agree, but also you can’t expect people to keep making intense music when they’re no longer in that state. Judging from her current music, she’s at a more peaceful place than before. She could just keep pretending to be a “broken” teen but she’s just not that anymore, and faking something you’re not is stupid.
Her point was satire…but it’s coming off as pretentious. I love Lorde but this song is a skip.

@@cultureresearch9875 He said he thinks Lorde is the future of music, which is why she was chosen to perform in his honour
I think this song is pointing out how when the world gets difficult a lot of people begin exploring crystals, meditation, etc to escape. Recession: early 2000s when mood rings were really popular. Now crystals and sage are really popular and we’re going through a pandemic amongst other things. I don’t think she means to say it’s a necessarily bad thing, but I think she is pointing out how instead of exploring ourselves and feeling what we feel, the very human response is to just escape.
*just wanted to say I do meditate and use crystals, and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. but I think that she was specifically singing about people who jump into those things and spirituality not earnestly, but in hopes for a quick fix or simple explanation of their problems*

I’d have to respectfully disagree with peace n luv. 🤍 Spirituality & practices are meant to explore yourself. Bringing awareness to your mind, body, spirit. Understanding the power and answers you hold from within. We are all sifting through life but also all from the same eternal blueprint of creation. I didn’t interpret this song or any of the ones released so far as escapism, rather immersing into consciousness & divine feminine energy 💫
I couldn't agree with you more ☺
The real spirituality means coming back to ourselves and empowering us, but many people maybe doesn't know that.

Hi i just started an album cover drawing channel
I wouldn't mind your support😁
the lyric ‘’can’t seem to fix my mood, today it’s as dark as my roots’’ AND HER HAIR IS BLONDE, calling out the artificial state of happiness that we often trick ourselves into. the intention behind this is amazing.
also the fact that you constantly have to touch up your roots when you’re blonde conveys that the pursuit of this artificial state of happiness is never ending until you decide to take the initiative and take a step back from this culture we are swept into
But she did say “if I let them grow out”
Still deep but
It’s not that deep 🤷♂️

If you watch the Fallen Fruit video, you’ll see a continuation of Mood Ring and what happens after these people leave the wellness retreats and leave these islands in shambles. The tents, people meditating, the rocks, the fan she picks up in the other music video are all a nod to this video.

I have to admit that when I first listened to the whole Solar Power album I was a bit underwhelmed. Maybe because I was still hung up with Melodrama and expected to hear the same sounds from Lorde. But Lorde went and gave a new sound; calm, grounded, and mature. And back then, like everybody else, I was taken aback and didn't fully appreciate the change. Revisiting the album now, however, after months of not listening to any Lorde's songs, I finally came to love it. Sure, it's not Melodrama but it's a masterpiece of its own. I hope people like me will revisit the album disregarding their idea of how Lorde should sound. Dive into it with a pair of new ears and only by then will you realize how good this album really is.

I think the song is a critique on wellness culture.
In the first verse, Lorde reveals her anxiety (i.e. how the early 2000s are far away and her oceans have riptides). Then she talks about burning sage, cleansing crystals, and meditation but despite all this she is numb. It's like to be happy requires copious amount of effort (i.e. traveling to the East as it may have everything you need) and how our pursuit of happiness can be a toxic one.

I feel like the song might be a criticism of Millenials' "trendy" spirituality that's based on consumerism more than... well, something deeper than that
She said in her live that it’s about trying to connect your spirituality to the modern world!
That's how I took it as well.
yes! she said this song is satire about how people are trying to find their way in that kind of vibe. I think it's both about trying to connect to spirtuality but also the consummerism of it that can make it so tricky. She mentioned something about how some times she takes her horoscope and tries to squeeze and bend it to fit her current situtation, so something to that effect
It's not that deep, she is really a quartz/meditation/spiritual white girl now

i can see another perspective that instead of being straight satire and a mockery of all things that are mentioned, its telling the story of somebody trying to find any way to heal. even though it all seems performative and the understand how plastic it is they still participate. maybe because it makes them feel cooler, maybe cause being apart of the in crowd makes them happy even if its for a short time and on an artificial level. regardless its a fucking banger
love how you described it, thanks
Yeah, I think it's meant to work at that level. Sure, the lyrics about the hair color establish early on that this isn't her, but she's said that some lyrics were definitely ker seeping into the song, like the bit at the end that she improvised on the spot at the studio (“Watch the sun set / over my life… / I just wanna know, / will it be alright?”).
Preach!!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
To me it’s about people who distract themselves from how terrible the world is or their own lives by buying into things like horoscopes as though that’ll make the world make more sense
i really like your take on it ty for sharing !!
This song is about how many "spiritual beings" base all of their emotions on crystals, sage, and star signs and don't actually try to feel any emotion on your own terms. Incredible song, not just for the lyrics, but because of how calming and relaxing a song about not being yourself sounds

ARE WE GETTING A CONCEPT ALBUM??? OMG
Yess it is titled “leader of a new regime”
the meaning behind this song is actually emotional and melancholy, thinking about how people are using this certain distractions to relieve their stress and to escape reality because they don't want to think about the main issue of our world right now at this very moment is just depressing. lorde really has a great mind on her own, what a great artist. looking forward to her album solar power so much!
That’s a good interpretation! Lorde actually came forward and admitted that ‘Mood Ring’ and the music video are satire!
Wow this is beyond amazing! After knowing this meaning it makes me love her more.
I’m from Bali and there have been plenty of retreats of yoga/meditation/wellness like this the one that she is satiring on the mv that are only full of white people. Not that many locals join the community. They seem so unaware of covid issue where they keep practicing, organizing communal spiritual events, etc…
Knowing that message….aaargh makes me scream I can really relate 100% !!!

She isn't so famous here in India but she is the one best artists I have come across in recent months. Her voice, her looks, her music videos, everything so soothing and pleasing to ears
I feel like this song is about a certain kind of person that lorde isn’t necessarily hating on, but perhaps pointing out their flaws. Life is scary and difficult, and its hard to even understand yourself or how you feel. This is the kind of person who is always looking for assurance from the newest trendy thing to make them feel better. To make them feel like everything is going to be alright.

I don’t think she’s being ironic about someone else but maybe more self referential. Like yeah a new age spirituality might seem trendy now but in her new songs, it seems like something she identifies with.
@@Josh-ir1us in her newsletter she says this is satire and not abt her
Lorde's character is the only one who breaks the 4th wall in the video. I think that means she's self aware despite riding along with all the wellness culture things they're doing.
That matches so good with the lyrics. "Tell me how I'm feeling" "Tell us how we're feeling" are directed to this wellness culture telling us how we're feeling and what to do to make ourselves feel better, with no responsability over the disappointment of things not working out well.

The lyrics are brilliant. I read them as concern for the pseudoscientific beliefs our generation is resorting to because the objective realities of living today are too messy, harsh and difficult to fully grasp. We're looking to find meaning in anything, literally anything, to avoid engaging with the world as it is. This is not a condemnation of young people. so aptly put. i am seconding this! we tend to look for ways that would make us feel assured and certain of what beckons next. this is the youth’s consolation from all chaos and suffering that seems never ending. mood ring in itself makes us feel heard that our emotions are validated. this mechanism helps us get by and see probabilities to prepare for the next
THIS!

I love the callout to the Pluto in Scorpio generation
Why is it called the Pluto in Scorpio generation? Could you please explain it? First time hearing that term (English is not my native language). I looked up the term on google but I still don’t understand it. 😅
@@mblnbnvdsdlcmp Physics will provide one with the information about how long it takes for one planet to orbit the sun! And as for its [Hellenistic] Astrological connotations, each generation fits into a Plutonian transit (time it takes for Pluto to move through a particular Zodiac sign, which is approximately between 12-31 years depending on the orbit of Pluto and the timing of its direct and retrograde motions).
Millennials are the Pluto in Scorpio generation, in that Millennials were born during the years that spanned Pluto’s transit through Scorpio.
In Modern Astrology, Pluto represents the subconscious, and is actually a modern co-adjudicator of Scorpio. Reference the mythological figure Pluto/Hades, and you will attribute its qualities and values as a planet in Astrology with the underground, dormant and potential energy, treasure (i.e. gems buried deep in the ground, volcanic activity).
It appeals to the psyche and the deeper, inner workings of an individual- things that are shaped by the times they live in, their motivations that they acquire as being part of their culture and their time, things that shape their subconscious.
What Scorpio represents in the Zodiac relate to the limits of the agency of oneself, death/rebirth, elimination and transformation. It is ruled by Mars (planet of conflict, work, aggression, sex, essentially known as the divine masculinity), along with the sign Aries. As such these are the duplicities of Mars, where Aries will be his yang expression, and Scorpio yin, based on their element/triplicity (fire/air signs are yang energy, while earth/water signs are yin). Trauma and healing are also associated with Scorpio to some extent, and the house it inhabits in the natural order of the Zodiac is the 8th, the area of emotional security and the security of the soul.
It is the fixed water sign. Taken literally, think “stuck emotions.” But on more elaborate terms, this refers to how we can be conditioned to thinking, feeling, and acting based on how our history of emotional experiences shape us.
And so how this interprets for Pluto in Scorpio is also reflective of both the biases and the sociological affects assigned to us Millennials- sensitive, values emotional affects and emotional work, understands disenfranchisement.
A lot of Millennials quite possibly were born to Pluto in Leo/Virgo parents (Boomer generation, discrepancies with Pluto signs because Pluto only took 14 years to make it through Virgo). The affects that Pluto would relate to in Millennials would be their desire for proximity that translates to a need for sexual liberation, economic disposition, valuing mental health and emotional wellbeing over affluence. Being born to Silent/Boomer generation parents, the experience of distance with the people who should be most close to us is normal. This translates to the lack of intimacy/proximity with our parents (spending more daylight hours at school in the company of strangers). In a way, life has set kids up to be estranged to home and roots. One can say these are things that we are surrendering to and transforming as a generation- how we stay rooted to family, and what that means for us. Scorpio can manifest this both in secure and toxic ways, so this comes into the narrative with all the upheaval that is required for transformation. Again, think of the theme of death and rebirth- for change to last, something must yield in order for it to become something else entirely.
Traditionalists (the Silent generation) span 1928-1944, then Baby Boomers span 1945-1964. The values of these generations will be completely different to ours, because they were also shaped by the great occurrences of their times. These generations definitely do contribute to the Millennial experience, in that they may fulfill the characteristics of Pluto in these signs (not having their authority/decisions questioned, not entertaining our/Millennial’s expressions/input/incompetence, not tolerating/encouraging emotion, which are some of the less ideal manifestations of these Plutonian traits).
One can say that having Pluto in Scorpio can mean knowing repression. Scorpio is a water sign, after all, and so it assesses and expresses its values best through emotion. As such, it is a karmic sign, in that it holds a lot of the collective, emotional imprint that Pluto hides in the underworld of the human psyche. It’s also the dormant power lying within the Millennial generation to reshape the world that we live in, for the younger generations to come and take our place eventually.
Look at the Gen Z/Pluto in Sagittarius, unafraid to try out the things that we had to fight for to have! We are stuck on the issues we have been trying to resolve, meanwhile they can charge into these new things with reckless abandon, just fancy-free.
There are a lot of statements here that people will be skeptical to or oppose outright, so if you’re still reading this, take everything with a grain of salt, or don’t come at me ☺️
@@coolkid13243 I mostly agree with what you're saying, but white people have spiritual traditions too. Maybe not America and England, but other European countries definitely do. Yes, she is truly phenomenal, but popularity is a complicated thing, many people move on very easily once they have experience rarity a first time. It happens to every big celebrity, fame is ephemeral independently of how talented someone is. Wich is very unpleasant because I consider Lorde as one of the few known that can be called a real artist.
Massively underrated. She IS a musical and lyrical genius. Even DAVID BOWIE said “Lorde is the future of music”.

it's because maybe you've been measuring talent and success by headlines/media attention. There are thousands upon thousands of magnificent artists who never made it to headlines. She is not underrated. Maybe she just doesn´t care about being so hyped, and nor should we.

Hi Stan 🥰
Hi Staaaan
Ok
I like how this song calls out the toxicity of some aspects of spirituality. So many people use it as a way to get better mentally, as an alternative to therapy, and wonder why they aren’t recovering. New age spirituality isn’t a bad thing in itself if it’s viewed as something secondary to enhance someone’s life, as a tool to make things easier. But it’s not something needed. The line, “You can burn the sage, and I’ll cleanse the crystals,” makes me think of how white sage is an indigenous practice, and the common use of it in new age/witchcraft circles is appropriation. Also, the mining of crystals has many harmful effects on the environment. Remember: if you need help, seek mental health professionals. Stay safe.
Yes, I think you're right. It's sad that it's hard to find authentic spiritual practices in the Western world which are not often interwined with profit models that are harmful for esp. minority communities and the climate. So does the pharmaceutical medical world, which are also known for harming the environment and communities. it doesn't mean we should we should avoid the medical practice because that can be dangerous , nor should we deny wanting to connect on a deeper level and have other kinds of alternative or spiritual healing if it doesn't harm us or others. I think this balance is needed, if only our western medical model would work together with traditional healing and learn without the people who seek profit from it are appropriating traditional healing practices.
we need to do better..
