Yes yes! I will say that there is a huge difference between making jokes about personal or universal experiences with being disabled and making jokes about disabled people, including yourself.

One particular difficult thing about tiktok is also the quickness in which your following can grow in days, if not hours whereas youtubers usually grow over years while getting used to maneuvering such a big audience and keeping/developing their values. You're able to listen to your viewers voices more if there are fewer of them- even if those voices are critical. You have time to read and reflect and i don't believe tiktok comments remotely offer this kind of slow growing process. Immediately getting a lot of praise from abled people who drown out advice/criticism from the community is probably hard to navigate if you haven't had enough time and space to deal with internalized ableism. (There are exceptions obviously but most youtubers will have posted for a long time before the algorithm picks up a video and even then some ignore constructive criticism.) It also might be difficult to handle these kinds of situations if you want to keep parts of an audience built from a specific kind of humor- changing from self depreciating ableist jokes to something different will cause parts of the audience to swing against you and the communities you hurt will also be rightfully careful to "absolve" someone from their past actions. Doesn't make it acceptable or even healthy for the people who are creating these kinds of videos but that's also why i appreciate you voicing your criticism without "leaking" their identity! I hope you get to reach your goal of 5000 soon, your commentary is considerate and easy to understand even for people not well versed in disability justice, it's empathic yet direct and i value it greatly!

you're right tho snowflakes are beautiful and it's so silly and cringe seeing people use something that builds up and makes cold solid water that melts and evapourates as an insult towards people who aren't discriminatory little sociopathic narcissists who have sympathy for others and who also see people as real human beings ☠☠

Empowerment is definitely the way forward. I deliver disability and equality training geared towards non disabled people. I enjoy making some jokes at their expense to highlight the absurdity of some of the comments and questions I hear as a wheelchair user. Kind of turning the tables and saying that, actually, non disabled people are the strange ones for having their views of disabled people.

I discovered as a disabled child being raised before the idea of inclusion. Had a fair amount of ableism to combat. I wore my body out trying conform to what I was told I should. I then felt like I failed or given up because I had ended up in a wheelchair. I still struggle to fight for empowerment in my life and feel comfortable in my own skin.

I think it’s so important to know your audience when making a controversial joke! Like there are things I’d say about groups I’m a part of if I’m only taking to people in that group, but on tiktok, Anyone can stumble across it and then it can become harmful. Great video as always! 🤍

The first time I’ve completely disagreed with you. Ableism in general and internalized ableism specifically is such an overused term, like most isms in modern society, that it’s almost devoid of all meaning and substance. I don’t like my diagnosis. I’m sick of being stuck in this damn wheelchair. It’s not fun, it’s not desiresble. That doesn’t mean I have some sort of ridiculous sociopolitical “ism”. I’ve always used self deprecating humor as a way to make friends, to open up and interact with the wider world. It seems to suit me well. Fitness is important.
