Yes! I discovered Spanish Vermut in 2017 and fell in love. I did not care for the strong bitter notes of some I was served. Being a novice I simply asked for a vermut and hoped for the best. At home in Florida, I don't have access to the wonderful variety offered in Spain so I mix 2 oz sweet Spanish sherry with 1 oz Punt e Mes vermouth to add a very slight bitter note that offsets the sweetness of the sherry. I squeeze an orange peel over the drink and rub it on the rim of the glass. Accompanied with fried almonds I make at home, it takes me back to Spain. I'll be in Barcelona this summer and will try your recommendations. Thank you!

I'm currently watching this video in the departure lounge of Birmingham Airport as we wait for our flight to Madrid.
If it wasn't for you I wouldn't have discovered that Vermouth is my favourite drink - we had a brief first trip to Madrid last year and learned so much from your videos.
We're returning to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary - out of of all the places in the world we could have gone, we've chosen to go back to Madrid and are counting the minutes til we can be back in Casa Toni.
      Thank you for inspiring us!

I was in Madrid a few days ago after a trip to the Canaries. While in MAD, we decided to go up to the rooftop bar at the Riu Plaza España Madrid. We took a look around taking in the wonderful view and I decided to take James' suggestion and try a Vermouth. The camarero brought the drink, and I tasted it and I thought I recognized the taste. I called the camarero back and asked what it was. Crikey! It was same Vermouth that I had ordered from Spain Revealed at Christmas time! La Cuesta. Delicious in Pennsylvania. Delicious in Madrid.

Yes, sir! A little vermouth before lunch, mmmmm. Tap "Vermut" or "vermú" ("bermoo", as it is pronounced in Madrid), especially from Reus, although Zarro brand is also really good. Your rule about the number of glasses of vermouth before lunch is totally correct. My favourite haunt to have vermouth before lunch is Bar Ferreras on Bravo Murillo and Donoso Cortés, on the fringe of the Argüelles area. It is a place that reminds me of the neighbourhood bars of my childhood (I grew up in the Lavapiés-Atocha area), most of which have disappeared (Bar Vega, Bar Koldo). Oh, the memories!

Thank you for the deep dive into different vermuts. We just got back from Madrid and Zaragoza and enjoyed a vermut or two each night before dinner. I came back to Texas and am now on the hunt for a similar vermut we enjoyed in Spain. My favorite was on the sherry side at a stand in San Miguel Market. We loved that market so much we went back each night we were there. Your and Yoli's videos are awesome. They prepared us so well for or trip. Keep 'em coming.

OMGoodness...am living here in Spain in La Comunidad Valenciana on the coast, and today I have learned so much in this short video. I am used to the common supermarket brands Yzaguirre or Vittorio or on occasion a great home made one from freinds. Your tips for pairing lwith tapas are exactly what I was looking for. I've got to make a trip to Castellón to a small speciality shop and see what they have of Vermouth. I did not get the name of the area in Barcelona where this vermuteria is. It looks so familiar...is it just off the Ramblas? Great video, thanks I shall be looking deeper into your channel! Greetings from a Swiss!

Vermouth sure is great. I also believe that people would like to know more about Spanish gin. I mean growing up, I firmly believed that British gin was best, but when I traveled to Spain for the first time, I was astonished by Gin in Spain. All the variations, the ways to drink it, the giant glasses, the relaxing time around gin drinking, the whole gin culture, I've fallen in love with it . Nordes and Larios are two particularly enjoyable brands for me.

Hi there, thanks for your comments. In Madrid breakfast tends to be sweet and light. Check out my two favourite pastry shops... La Mallorquina and El Riojano (check out my video here ua-cam.com/video/xFo6NI12fjc/v-deo.html - first and last stops). If you need something savoury, they do great breakfasts at a cafe called Plenti in the Huertas neighbourhood. It's not so traditional (a little hipster), but very yummy.

James, have you thought about doing a video series on the different cultural areas of Spain such as Catalonia, Andalusia, Galicia, etc? There are food and cultural differences that could be enjoyed and appreciated more by tourists IF they knew what they were. I love your videos for the 'local' references, because we enjoy 'la gente'/people as much as 'la comida/food'. Keep up the great videos, I'm going to look for something you hopefully covered in a previous video: Tortilla Espanol /Spanish Omelette, as I want to make one when we return to Canada.

Excellent video on Vermut! The social aspect is important (we learned from a local) and you covered that. The premium Vermuts you tasted are not available in our local grocery stores like Sorli, Supermercado or even the huge Carrefour in the Glories mall here. I'm on my third bottle of a reserva-branded bottle. I think any reserva Vermut will have more character than the lower price ones, and they start at about 9 or 10 Euros which is fine. I figure life is too short to spend it drinking lower quality spirits--- treat yourself! Vivo a lo grande!!

We did a food tour today with Owen, and I had my first Vermouth. I'm not a drinker, but I enjoyed it...the tour was fabulous..if you are reluctant to come to Spain, don't be...the hardest part was filling out that dang health form...here are a few hints. 1) It asks for your seat number on the plane...didn't have one, so I made it up. 2) When you put in your home address it won't go on unless you put in an Apartment number, didn't have one, so I made it up. 3) It asks for a security number...and in the small print on the right hand side of the screen it tells you they will email it to you...you have to read this small print....we ran into a panicked man in the airport, trying to get home to Denmark, but the airline was sending him all over including Spain...so he needed that health form...we helped him get one...but he had hot mail email and it wasn't coming through so I sent it to my email (yahoo) and it came right through. Come and enjoy yourself...

You are so correct that the Spaniards have sussed how to can (or bottle) food... it's really difficult to explain to my British neighbours (or previously my French, Belgian and Swedish neighbours).

I just found your channel and I'm plowing through your videos, salivating over each one. I'm an oyster farmer and interested in the industry in Spain. Can you point me in a direction to learn more (and eat more?)

I had never had vermut with olive and orange until visiting Barcelona last year. I was hooked. Before returning to the States, I went to the bar serving what I thought was the best vermouth and asked if I could buy a bottle. They whipped out a plastic liter bottle, filled it, and charged me $3.00! The vermut made it home and I break it out on special occasions. Lovely stuff.

Jim McPherson headed to Barcelona tomorrow. Would love to buy a bottle myself. Which bar sold you the bottle?

Nice job......I could almost taste the tapas. Just came back from Barcelona a few weeks ago.
Some hits and a lot of fails. Wish I had watched your videos sooner.

Perdón, aparte del Mercado de San Miguel, ¿dondé se encuentra el otro local de La Hora del Vermut? En internet sólamente encuentro el de la Plaza de San Miguel. Muchas gracias.

Howdy y que tal?! We are booked for devour tours Madrid tapas Tavern next week- we are looking for somewhere to schedule a vermouth tasting with an expert, much like what you do here. Are you able to set that up for us? Or please recommend somewhere where I could set it up for us. Many thanks, your videos have been a giant help being prepared for our 15 days in spa.

Thanks for the delicious-looking vermouth and tapas recommendations. I like Spanish vermouth but sometimes it gets too sweet - I've read about ordering it "con sifon" - is that something you would recommend?

    • @spainrevealed
      @spainrevealed  6 років тому +1

Yes Marie, you can order it with a little soda water in... called sifón. You’ll see them on the table tops if bodegas in Barcelona (not so much in Madrid)

Hi James. I was wondering if you can list the tapas that you featured in this video in Spanish. I got the first two, but the rest I would like to order in Spanish once I get there. Thank you for your helpful videos.

Amazing video. It seems that Vermouth is now most popular in Spain than in Italy, can you confirm and tell me why?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hola!
I went to Spain over the summer and fell in love with Vermut! I drank it at Mercado San Miguel. But I can't remember the brand that i had :( It was sweet and bitter. I wish that a knew the brand to see if I can find it back home in Puerto Rico.

I do like Vermouth, however I did not find many spaniards that ask for Vermouth, not in my bar or others
