Spain Revealed - James Blick I’m vegan. It would be nice to have a video dedicated to asking for special needs/interest dining, or even restaurants/locations that are ADA friendly. I have found a large vegan/vegetarian community and venues in Madrid & Alcala de Henares. I believe there’s pretty good material that can make for an interesting video. This also gives discussion to Mision Abolista (anti-bullfighting) and other green-friendly initiatives that are growing in Spain. Gracias!
That lady in the back 😂 she’s part of the video too! Biggest videobomb ever! She was very interested and amused with their presentation 😂 she was great 👍. Also great video guys 👍
I am English and my husband is Spanish. We live on a very small island in the Canaries. I am going back to a video where you state that the Spanish do not say "please" and "thank you" much. My husband does not use those words in or out of the house. I say them often, and it is nice to see the lovely smiles I get from waiters and in shops. Maybe we should all say "please" and "thank you" more often, It brightens the working day of many people who may feel unappreciated! Many thanks for your videos. Hope you make many more!
Something I've found as a beginner is this kind of scenario which I think would be great to see you act out and solve! Basically, just asking for water (or whatever) isn't normally the end of the conversation! There are some very common responses the answers to which would be so useful to learn and get used to! So, here's the problem that I always have in such simple scenarios as asking for, say, a coffee and a water. I pluck my courage up and say "Un cafe Americano y un agua por favor"....then the waiter/waitress will say something back which I won't catch and I'll have to resort to my single most-used Spanish phrase: "Lo siento pero no hablo Espanol!" Hehe :) I think being prepared for those kinds of situations will be hugely beneficial! Things such as "con gas?" or (as you mention in this video "botella" or "copa". This kind of thing happens to me ALL THE TIME! Lol 🙈😂. PS Keep up the fantastic content, my wife and I absolutely love Spain, not long returned from Christmas break in Malaga, and heading to Madrid in April, can't wait!
I accidentally stumbled across your video while my curiousity was peaked about Spain. I love how informative the videos are, how excited you are about the content and how you and your wife capture the true character of everything; the architecture, food, drinks, the environment but more so the locals! Everything is so beautiful! This is how I imagine Spain to be, defintely on the top of my bucket list! Thank you for your enthusiasm and love of Spain, keep up the great work!
This lesson will be learned before I visit Spain. Thank you for pointing out, to compliment the restaurant at the '"Farewell". Nice added touch, that could be missed by Americans visiting.
This was amazing, so helpful! I would like to see a similar video to this but in a cafe setting. How to order different types of coffees and drinks, common pastries, how to ask for WiFi password, bathroom, etc.
Having spent a lot of time in Spain over the last few years, these videos provide really useful advice for real Spain on tourist trap Spain. I could have done with when I first visited Spain.👍👍
I am returning to Spain this year after spending a semester there in 1981, I cant wait to see my Sevilla again and all the changes. Thanks for all the great videos and information.
Thank you for reminding me of my Spanish. It was also quite fun watching the lady behind you at the bar, she was very interested in what you were doing.
I learned from you guys and used what I learned with the family for two weeks in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca this year. You gave me the confidence to find "Una mesa para quatro, por favor" and order "Una hamburgeruesa sin queso y patatas fritas" or many other things from "la carta". It was the best Spanish holiday I've had and I look forward to learning some grammar now, to better myself and make my Spanish holidays even more complete. Thank you so much James and Yolanda. Don't underestimate how much your viewers get from your videos. Muchas gracias amigas....
Vosotros dos sois alucinantes. La mirada de amor que muestra Yoli por James me calienta el corazón. Además, James, it's hard to believe you're from New Zealand, because your intonations and how you use English sounds VERY American -- California to be specific. You guys are the best -- keep up the great work!
One other thing -- I've lived in Madrid 4 years now and have been afraid to try certain foods, because I didn't know what they were. After all this time, your video taught me that boquerones were fried anchovies. Who knew?! Well the good news is that I dislike anchovies as much as I do the kind of fish I (incorrectly) thought this was, so either way no big loss LOL.
Thank you, for an American English speaker, in-spite of the name, it was quite helpful, visiting Madrid for the first time on early May, I learned quite a lot from your few videos I watched. Gracias
This is just the video I needed to rescue myself from the awkward restaurant experiences I've bumbled through during my first week in Spain. Going to be in Madrid next week and we'll see how I do. 😂
@@saralampret9694 No no... Monsieur's imaginary conversation would be between the waiter and the kitchen. This is what happens... You walk into the bar and ask for a ración de calamares. Excellent content. My wife is fluent in Spanish but I stumble along with all I’ve picked up along the way and these phrases are simple and perfect. Unfortunately in Madrid as soon as anyone detects a whiff of your imperfect Spanish they tend to reply in near perfect English, French or German, making it difficult to practice. But, keep trying and your confidence will progress along with your knowledge of the language.
Hi. I am loving the videos. Thank you for your enthusiasm for Spain. I am from the UK and my partner is Spanish from Madrid. I would love a video about introductions to people in Spain and how to say perfectly in Spanish, “You look nice”. Basically, small talk at the beginning and end of a group friendly meeting with people. Thanks 😍
Great video, perfect to have the phrases written down on the screen (took screen shot of each one ☺️) and said by you both! I will be using all of the phrases 😁☀️🇪🇸🍷🍻🍲
Hi! My friend and I are coming to Spain in May 2020! We’ve never really spent a lot of time there either, mostly just passing through? We are super excited to spend a little mire time this time! I speak Latin American Spanish I feel very confused about the Spanish in Spain it makes me nervous because that’s the mother country of Spanish, however it’s extremely different!? for instance from Mexico like when ask “Do you have”. This video really helped me not be a simple tourist when I traveled to Grenada earlier this year. A 'go to' video for anyone who wants to hit the tapas bars wherever they go. Thanks for making this video, James!
This was amazing. The accents was prefect. What I would now like is a more complete phrase formation as opposed to a command. Like "May I ...." "Where may I ...., How may I ...?" "Could you please ....direct me to?.... tell me how?...tell me where? Communication skills that can be used in & out of a restaurant. With repetition comes association & familiarity. Gracias!
Thanks James and Yoly! We are preparing for our first trip to Spain from the US at the end of the month and your videos are super helpful, and fun. We are looking forward to our stay in Madrid. Our apartment is not too far from Casa Toni so we are looking forward to stopping in for a drink or two and tapas!
This is a really important and informative video, because (for native speakers of English especially), the Spanish language is chock full of 'false friends.' Many words in Spanish that sound and even are, very similar to words in English. However, these words often possess meanings equally or totally different. For example: 'Menu'. La carta is correct, as the former actually pertains to 'menu del dia' - a sort of fixed price meal. Or, 'listo', which correctly translated colloquially, doesn't mean a number of differing items, but is understood as 'pristine' - and so on. Which, for all foreigners in Spain, is the best reason for practicing Spanish and talking to strangers. Acquirin knowledge and immersing in Spanish culture and everyday manners.
I’m going to Spain in a month. I just found your channel and I am really enjoying the videos. I have not gone through all of them yet. I’d love to see one with every day phases in Spanish like; where do I get the bus/taxi, train. Bathroom facilities, grocery store, police, hospital, pharmacy.
This is a quite important video for all newcomers and visitors in Spain. What a helpful video.
It's 1 AM in the U.S. and I'm binging alllllll your Madrid videos. Obsessed. I was studying there from January until early March when we had to leave (due to coronavirus) but all these videos are great and make me want to return so badly when all the chaos has calmed! My favorite thing about going out to tapas bars in Madrid was how my friends who didn't know much Spanish would try so hard to order and use the most literal translation and say "¿Puedo tener una copa...?" instead of "me pones una copa..." or "quería una copa..." as you suggested in the video. Thanks for the videos!!
I was taught the rojo/tinto difference one holiday in Minorca by a real gent of a waiter. Have remembered it ever since! This channel is bringing back so many memories of Spain to me!
This was very useful & practical. If you could do more videos with everyday language, such as when you're exploring different sites in a town: e.g. asking for directions, asking/buying a ticket for a museum or other site, taking the bus or train, asking about their timetable, platform, etc.
This is great! I am heading to Madrid in two weeks and just discovered your channel. Pretty much everything I need to get by right here. Except for "I haven't see you here before".
I love chipirones in Madrid. I remember (fifty years ago) that you could go out a and chatos de vino cost between 3 and 5 pesetas (the peseta was 60- 70 to the dollar at the time) and it would cost less than a dollar a round with my friends and they always gave tiny little tapas with each one.
I like this video. Cute couple. I like the advice too. In school they teach us everything so formally like we’re going to eat at the King’s home. Subscribed!

I will look for it because I’m sure it’s there somewhere but if not certainly would like to know all the different ways of ordering coffee of different types.

I’d love a video about ordering tickets at a museum/attraction. Tips on parking as well (we’ve heard parking is a nightmare all over Spain).
Por favor sigan con con sus vdeos y especialmente sigan inspirar s n coraje a las turistas estadounidenses que comuniquen con la gente amable y simpatica de Espana. thanks for the tips! we’re from miami, so we speak spanish, of course. but words like cana and raciones, etc. we don’t use. so, these tips should prove useful for or spanish trip in october.
Keep them coming. Very helpful and inspiring. We spent 4 months in Spain last year, Bilbao, Valldolid,Salamanca,Seville,Cadiz,Malaga, Madrid, Toledo,Burgos etc. And I now know how to use the word "copa" for glass instead of "vaso" And "cana" instead of cervesa pequeno. Thank you
Fantastic Iban! It’s those little lingo tips that make you sound much more local!
Very helpful! Coming soon! I’ll be watching this one a few times!
Very helpful. More like this would be appreciated.
We just discovered your videos and love you! We love travel videos, but try to eat and live as locals. We ran out of videos that we useful and informative and then we discovered you!. We have been to Spain many times and every time we inevitably end up in at least one tourist trap (always a bummer)- your tips have been super helpful and we are planning on binge watching all your Spain videos before our next visit in a month! Thank you!!!

I'm just now enjoying your channel. I hope you two are still together, Yolanda is a gem.
I lived in Zaragoza for five years, and I will be back.
I will look for it because I’m sure it’s there somewhere but if not certainly would like to know all the different ways of ordering coffee of different types.
Thank you for this and your other videos. Heading to Spain in late March and I'm now more confident and comfortable in my ability to get around and manage some basic interactions. You two are awesome....and totally adorable!!
