If you go to spain you must try the fruit and vegetables. When we go abroad Spanish people miss two things ham and vegetables, that's how good and important they are for us. My brother just came from Ireland and God, he missed our food.
I remember going with my mom to Prosperidad market when I was little and it was amazing. After, at the 90's, the big supermarkets came and lots of tradicionals markets dissppeared. Now some of the tradicionals markets are coming back and it is fastastic, the quality is better. I discovered your Chanel yesterday and it is very cool. By the way, the Spanish olive oil is much better than the italian one...sometimes, the italian olive oil is mixed with oil from Morocco, with has no the proper sanitary controls. I wish we export more olive oil to the rest of the world, it is really good. Besitos desde los Madriles
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you discovered the channel! And yes, Spanish oil is amazing, and we are doing better at selling internationally bit by bit.
Como dato, Spain is a giant in the olive oil world. The country produces almost half of the world’s olive oil, more than three times as much as Italy, Greece or Tunisia. Over 250 million olive trees grow in Spain. Jaen is the largest producer of Olive Oil in Spain and also world-wide. Just the province of Jaen produces more than the second largest producer country, Italy. Me encantan tus videos, la informacion justa y precisa, muy bien explicado sin sobrecargar, se nota que lo disfrutas ^_^
Great traditional market tips for a British Londoner such as myself intending to move to Spain. In London we are used to having to choose our own fruits and veg.
Thank you for showing Madrid as it is and helping me rediscover my own city and country! Qué hambre me ha entrado al ver los boqueroncitos con las patatas :)

I stumbled upon your videos a couple of days ago and I´m mesmerized with the amount of dedication put into these. They are extremely well explained, no wonder they have so many views! When I was living in Madrid, nearly 40 years ago, my favorite cheese was Manchego en aceite. I remember it as having a sharper taste than regular Manchego. I’ve looked but have never found it at any cheese shop in the U.S. I wonder if you can fill me in on the difference between the regular and “en aceite” varieties. I have found that longer-aged Manchego has a sharper taste than shorter-aged, but I seem to remember the aceite version being more so. Does it still exist in Spain?
Great questions Jerry. More cured manchego certainly does have more flavor. The “en aceite” comes from the fact that olive oil is a preservative and so was the traditional way to preserve the cheese (and lots of other foods) pre refrigeration. The technique has remained because it also gives a wonderful flavor to the cheese. You can still find it easily in Spain. That’s a shame you can’t get it in the USA. Have you tried latienda.com?
@@spainrevealed Thank you for that link, James. Unfortunately, I don't see any Manchego en aceite at latienda. However, you inspired me to do a google search. I didn't find any purveyors in the U.S. (elsewhere, yes), but I did find DIY instructions. It never occurred to me I could to it myself! This is going on my to-do list right now. These DIY cheese are a different thing, it's only preserved in olive oil. The cheese that you remember is a cheese aged in olive oil. jerrys88 let me give you the name of a world class cheese "en aceite" you can find in the US: "Páramo de Guzmán" from Burgos, Spain. If you can't find it I'll send you one. I lived in the US for sixteen years and I love your country.
@@franbas91 Thank you for the information. I will email them. In the meantime, I am curious to know, do you have personal experience preserving cheese in olive oil? From what I have read, it sounds like it doesn't just preserve but also affects the taste. Isn't that what manchego en aceite is, after all?
I like your videos. I recently befriended a few Spaniards and have slowly become fascinated with their culture and habits (pretty similar to mine). Can’t wait to visit Sevilla in May.
Love your enthusiasm😊I have been living in Spain for over 3 years now. I have been learning to eat and enjoy all kinds of new foods and am still finding out new things. You are so right about going to the city markets and meeting people who are passionate about food and drink.😊
As a Spaniard living abroad for the last ten years, I enjoy watching your videos big time! You do know your stuff very well. Enhorabuena por el vídeo y por el canal, me encanta
In Andalucía we usually ask ¿Quien es la última? (or el último if there are males involved) At the butchers you didn't mention rabbits (conejos) which are always sold with the head still attached. Why? - because without the head, you would find it very difficult to know that it wasn't a cat - they look almost identical once the fur has been removed. How do you tell the difference - a rabbit is a rodent and a cat is a carnivore - look at the teeth!

About the same price I woud pay for a frozen _barra_ but way better (and it goes fresh for some days). So cool I love this... very well done. Love your candor and fun with the chefs from around the world. I loved how you focused on the story behind each tapa which as you said really says so much about the place they are from and how it is now reflected in food. Truly interesting and deserves further exploration by someone... You're a very lucky man doing it now .. and in Spain! Looking forward to the next episodes! ... Vamos! (perhaps meet you in Spain this year)
My neighbourhood. I'm going to visit this weekend! Also, thanks for letting me know about Moega. I used to live in Galicia and the bread up there is simply sensational.
I do not know this "Pollería" here at Antón Martín. I usually go to "Mercado de Maravillas" at Cuatro Caminos. I do go to Mercado Antón Marín myself sometimes.
Great video. Thank you. Please do more on the unwritten rules of places (like not touching fruit, Quién da la vez?, etc.). Great for anyone planning to visit or live in Spain.
3rd day in Spain. After a morning exploring the Prado museum, we're see off to find a flamenco academy my wife wants to check out. Wouldn't you know it, ITS IN MERCADO ANTON MARTIN! So here I am sitting at Latazo having a vermut de grifa, writing yet another post about one of your videos James. I even took a pic of Polleria Hernandez (closed today) just outside. We are going to end up running into each other. The market is much more than I expected, much larger, actually 3 floors. I count at least 5 butcher shops, a dozen little shop/bars, not to mention the flamenco academy at the top. Wonderful market.....now I have to find the olive guy....
After seeing this video I rushed out and bought boquerones and potato chips fried in olive oil. As James points out, this combination is absolutely incredible! Thank you James for the tip!

I love watching your videos! My wife and I are planning our first trip to Spain to be next year, and I feel much more confident watching your videos. I already have saved all the tapas restaurants you have recommended on my Google maps, and now I'm going to save this market as well. I do have a question though: what advise would you give to tourists like me that want to experience Spain, but don't drink alcohol? Thanks!
Hi Enrique! So exciting you're heading to Spain! No worries about not drinking alcohol - no big deal at all. Just order zumo o un refresco o mosto with your tapas - lots of people do!
I been to Spain in 3 occasions and my native language is Spanish but I still find your videos really useful, for example the frases they use that I'm not familiar with. So I have a suggestion/question; can you put those frases at the bottom of your videos? For example the frase you use for the last in line, this way we don't have to look for the reference thru all the video. Thanks!
You sort of don’t. You could get a tabla de ibéricos which would be a selection of cured meats and cheeses. Not all places will have that though. What in particular are you wanting to try - and I’ll help!
Me encanta el amor que sientes por nuestro país, un cariñoso abrazo.

Thanks ma!
Looking forward to the next episodes! ... Vamos! (perhaps meet you in Spain this year)
Fascinating. I really appreciate the tips on common phrases and customs
My neighbourhood. I'm going to visit this weekend! Also, thanks for letting me know about Moega. I used to live in Galicia and the bread up there is simply sensational.
cómo os lo curráis!! well done guys!
Gracias!
Just met the butcher at your shop...
Great message Jose - sounds like you're having a hell of a great time in Madrid! Might see you around!
Nos haces vivir lo que nos enseñas con tu pasión.

Always love to watch your video. Very informative n always leave me hungry.
Is it easy to shop in the mercado if we don’t know any Spanish? Thanks
This really helped us in our trip to Spain
Fantastic - have fun!
Thank you again for a great video sorry I'm a little behind in time about watching this still it's a wonderful and informative video and the way that you appreciate and love that country 👍
Brings back good memories looking round
I love watching your videos! My wife and I are planning our first trip to Spain to be next year, and I feel much more confident watching your videos. I already have saved all the tapas restaurants you have recommended on my Google maps, and now I'm going to save this market as well.
I do have a question though: what advise would you give to tourists like me that want to experience Spain, but don't drink alcohol? Thanks!
Hi Enrique! So exciting you're heading to Spain! No worries about not drinking alcohol - no big deal at all. Just order zumo o un refresco o mosto with your tapas - lots of people do!
@@spainrevealed Or free-alcohol beer.
Thanks for sharing! Very useful information for someone planning to visit Madrid soon... I ended it hunger
Awesome, so glad you enjoyed it!
Going to Madrid next week. Your videos are amazing and well done. Thanks for tips.I will see next week how good are the tips...
Thanks!
gracias!!
Loved it.... especially the family pictures.
Me encanta cómo promociona mi país grasias
How do I ask in Spanish for the “tasting platter”?
You sort of don’t. You could get a tabla de ibéricos which would be a selection of cured meats and cheeses. Not all places will have that though. What in particular are you wanting to try - and I’ll help!
Tapas should never come as a tasting platter (ie two croquetas, two bits of cheese, a few patatas bravas). That’s tourist trap material
Another great video! Wish we could get jamón ibérico at our local market in the states...
It's beside the Mumm's!
