Oh no! Dan is sick and unable to get out of bed! So we decided that rather than leave you show-less this week (nope, we had nothing in the can), Mick took a solo flight to talk about… Uni-Vibes. Or at least pedals based on the venerable UniVox Uni-Vibe, made famous by lots of players, not least Robin Trower and Jimi Hendrix.
THIS VIDEO IS NOT
- A comparison of Uni-Vibe clones and UV-alikes - we’ll do that another time
- A video on How To Sound Like Jimi Hendrix or Robin Trower - it’s a futile pursuit anyway, and way beyond our abilities!
THIS VIDEO IS
- A discussion about where you might want to put your Uni-Vibe pedal in your effects chain, and how it can react with your amp and overdrive/fuzz
- Er, that’s it.
Our pedals today are:

It's just not the same without the massive sexual tension, oh well.
Hahahahahaha! I agree.
+Arttu Hämäläinen hahahahahaha, I couldn't agree more!
loooolll
Mick playing his Strat is enough sexual tension to satisfy my weekly needs.
+POG FROGULPOP Garlic, Vitamin C and plenty of rest for Dan. Get well soon Bro.
I really like the Vibe first in the chain. The sweeps are much more defined.
Just ordered this pedal (goodbye the last of my savings) , thx for your input, I havent seen it first in signal but worry about it not being defined enough, I will test out your method for sure.
With the Fulltone, I used to use it after the distortion, depending if its more of a sustain drive like a Wampler ego, or if it’s distortion like a silver arrow. I have been using it before any distortion lately. Using a noise gate at the end of the chain -before it goes into stereo fx that split into marshals half-stacks with 2 amps operating in stereo mode. I find that the stereoBoss DC-2w waza chorus-like box is pretty kewl to send to 2 different heads. Set it - forget and leave it on. There’s my two cents. By the way I’ve had here Marshall’s forever and been collecting pedals since the 70s (read I’m old) 😁
Coincido!🤩🙌🏻
Great vid. Mick you're a great player and get the sound most guitar players try to achieve. Strat sounds great also. Thanks for posting!
You did a grand job on your own.
If Dan ever needs a cut out Mick, 19:15 is the money shot hahaha!
I was not disappointed by this time stamp
I checked it out and laughed my ass off!!! Nailed it!
Yo this is 4 years ago, did I predict lockdown? 😳
That's the fuzz face right there I guess :D
I recently got an Electro-Harmonix Good Vibes and it's a lot of fun to use,I think it's very underrated in the world of vibes.
Mick sure knows his stuff. The tone he gets from the strat neck pickup is just brilliant! And great video as always!
A little late to the party but I just ordered a Déjà Vibe. From the video, I think I’ll put it before my dirt pedals. See how my Tele sounds thru a Blues Jr. Thanks! Awesome video.
Nice! Enjoy that Pete!
First Univibe I bought was an MXR , really disappointed with it , to much hiss and not enough effect.
agreed. pos. sent it back.
@@imaseeker100 almost got it [mxr unvibe] cause of price point and thought it sounded somewhat decent but the pros have this one and i wisely held off for this one $180 usd used, cant wait to get it on my board (ordered it on reverb)
Yeah I’ve heard the MXR is just a glorified phaser rather than a proper uni-vibe
I absolutely love you dudes. As a worship director, people ask how I know so much about pedals and I steer them to you guys. Thanks for your knowledge and passion for technology and music!!
Forget The Chapton and Cappers.....That Pedal Show Rooooolz!!! StellarJimi tones!
Great show Mick, but I think you've missed a golden opportunity to have the camera zoom-in on the Dan cut-out and do your best impression.
DAN, DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS! TAKE IT EASY ON ALL THE LIQUOR AND HARD DRUGS!
Check out The Vibe Machine by Drybell. I Love mine & will Never need another. It is Incredible. Liquid, Swirling, Throb. So Hypnotic - the Univibe Sound. - Michael Caz - NYC
:) ! I'm saving up for a V-1. People say they handle low end well; I play 7 and 8-strig guitars, so that's an absolute must for me...if sounds thin out and wash out, it'll be a major, major bummer. I have a Mad Professor Fire Red Fuzz, and I'll be experimenting with my V-1 pre-fuzz, and post-fuzz, but most tell me to put it before the fuzz. :)
Keeley dynatrem, has a univibe, dynamic tremolo and tremolo
The University of Great Tone from the land of UA-cam. Geez you guys are great, even with Professor Mick today. Get well professor Dan. Hey you guys should do a rundown on your gear. Love to know what you guys personally choose.
I got a Moen "Shaky Jimi" Uni-Vibe, and with the time playing it I've realized it sounds best at the beginning of the chain, and also with 9volt batteries it sounds much better than with a power supply, I only use batteries for gigs thought.
Get well soon, Dan, and, by the way, I need one of those cutout pictures of you. It will remind me to experiment with pedal placement.
Cool video. I do like the sound of the Uni-Vibe before the OD. Definitely smoother sounding. But there is something about the "Hendrix" way of doing things that's kind of addictive.
I'm not into overdrives and distortions that have a bit of clean underneath the dirt. Sounds like that here.
Get well soon Dan!
My early '90's Dunlop Uni-Vibe (big, polished metal case) w/the original power supply & expression pedal is pure magic...
overdrive before 5:13
overdrive after 5:27
definitely prefer after and thank you! So lost in this...
@@YBNegative yeah, I think it clips the sound so the univibe compresses the overdrive, after makes it sound more rich
the internet thanks you!
Can we talk about that Class 5 amp?!…. Hot damn!
The Society of Putting Things on Top of Other Things.
THE DEPTHS, by EQD… the vibe!
Great show Mick. Great playing. Other masters of this style that used vibes...Frank Marino and Uli Roth
+Jim Foster Thanks Jim, much appreciated!
Hahaha loved the low wattage Dan!! Get well. Thanks for not leaving us "videoless" Mick. You guys are great individually and as a team!
Careful with copyright stuff, it’s crazy now! Even in the comments, bots crawling everywhere!
This format really works just as well, it reminds me of the Flight of the Conchords when Brett got replaced by the tape.
So anyways I've recently heard of people using a fuzz or overdrive on both sides at the same time
Love the Strat , also I liked the vid you did for Guitarist magazine when you played through the Dumble amp, the tones you were getting out of that Amp were awesome.
As requested, I'm sending Dan some positive vibes ... some positive Uni-Vibes! Get it?!?! Do ya?!? I'm clever.
Best Univibe I ever heard, besides the original Shinoi from Japan is the Univibe from Argentina, the Sabbadius
thanks for the video, hope Dan gets better soon. you guys need to check out the oddfello effects caveman overdrive, i think it might be the best ever made, i own most of the best overdrives made and this is killing them!
I would of loved to hear Star Spangled Banner played in this demo especially when you turned the KOT on with the Fuzz Face and the Deja Vibe
Mick, after watching a few of your videos, I never realized how much you absolutely ROCK until this one! GOOD LORD MAN.
Ah man, thank you kindly!
Damn just found this been a subscriber for over a year. You answered many questions. Truly enjoyed your tone and playing. Awesome
Great, as usual! Please, do a video comparison about Leslie pedals. There's the Option 5 Destination Rotation, DLS RotoSIM, Neo Mini Vent and others!
Get well soon, Dan!
+Gareth Webb Indeed. Need you back ASAP Dan as Mick's useless without you. ;-)
I must've missed something...he didn't show the Vibe before Fuzz combination...or did he?
One of the best effects/guitar/inspiring videos i've ever seen. Thanks man you guys did a greeeeat job.
Voodoo before drive great, after it will become a phaser effect..wet sound.
What is considered first in your chain? Is it after your guitar, or after your amp? I get confused when I hear people talk about signal chains cause I'm not sure which end of the chain is considered the beginning.
Hello Red, sorry I didn’t make this more obvious. Think of signal flow like water. So it starts in the guitar and ends up at the amp. Therefore first in the chain is the one closest to the guitar. Cheers!
@@ThatPedalShow Ah ok. I've heard some consider the beginning being after the amp and some say after the guitar so I get confused on which is correct. I understand what you're saying now, thank you so much! Forgive me, I'm still kinda new👍
Fuzz>Vibe>Bluebreaker OD (or amp gain).
This is all I know.
why blue after? arent overdrives usually first?
Awesome guys, love watching the show, apologies for not liking the videos which I watch as I mostly forget to do. But I'm really inspired by your show. Thanks Mark.
Humbuckers just dont fit fuzz
I've ALWAYS had a Fuzz/OD before AND after the Uni vibe, after all, why not? :)
So glad Dan recovered but I can't say I didn't enjoy this episode! I've been on a real Uni-Vibe kick lately!
I will never understand effects order videos. Dude just try it in each spot and decide yourself. You don’t need a 30 minute youtube video for this.
Some people do. Because they need to understand what to listen for sometimes. The single most common question we get asked is: what order should I put my gain pedals in? Including the preposition on the end of the sentence. Gadzooks.
@@ThatPedalShow lol i’m no grammar patrol. All that said I love the channel and demo videos. Give the people what they want, but experimentation with what one has in front of them is still my suggestion 😎👍
19:14 BEST FACE IN THE HISTORY OF MAN
Your videos are speaking to me today Mick. My dream rig is a Duesenberg Starplayer TV (from the Guitar Paradiso vid with Danish Pete) and a H&K Tubemeister 18. Of course, a KOT wouldn't go amiss either....
Vibes are the best
Internet high-five for the Landau shoutout. You should hear his album with Jazz Ministry at The Baked Potato, awesome stuff :)
Got turned on to The Depths by Travis from Wampler pedals. I run it before my drives and love it!
Yeah right, me too
I swapped my dl4 for one of those Wampler Faux Tape Echo's best decision I ever made on my board. I've actually met an worked briefly as stage technician for Travis too an his band great bunch musicians they supported Walter Trout when he was touring the uk.
Holy shit! 12:35
Where will you be when the fuzz kicks in?
thanks Mick!!!! Get well Dan! Danelectro Cool Cat Vibe is a sweet low budget univibe sound which.........also works best before overdrives.
Before I’ve watched this, I’m just like, okay mick, I guess you had to flex to two KOT’s !!
(Just kidding, love your stuff!!)
That clean fuzz tone with delay was choice.
SHOULD HAVE BRUOGHT THE NAME DROP HORN FOR WHEN YOUY TALK TO DANNY CUTOUT LOL HA HA
i know right. he's slippin
One question regarding the class 5.... Was it on the low power mode? or full power? Ive got one and on full power it has to be the loudest 5 watts around and the on low power the amp gets a bit darker sounding
+Aaron Mifsud Full power in this video Aaron. Cheers!
thanks
Thanks Mick for the uni-vibe demo, this has made me want to grab one of these pedals! Hmm thinking if you have a Uni-vibe would you need a tremolo as has that kind of vibe (excuse the pun!).
Thanks Mick! Loved the Dejá Vibe and the Fuzz!
Dan, a big hug and get well soon!
Cheers!
Probably my favorite pedal ever along with a good fuzz and overdrive lol oh and tape echo
Hard to just pick one ain't it? Lol
Damn I hate them noisy ass fuzz faces. I have a '68 red velvet fuzz by chase tone and I like it. No noise, I play it before my dejavibe but I'm still experimenting.
Get well ol boy
With the Fulltone, I used to use it after the gain boost its more of a sustain drive like a Wampler ego - before if it’s distortion like a silver arrow. I have been using it before any distortion lately. Using a noise gate at the end of the chain. I’m sending it into stereo fx that split into my old Marshall half-stacks with 2 amps operating in stereo mode. I find that the stereo Boss DC-2w waza chorus-like box is pretty kewl to send to 2 different heads. Set it - forget and leave it on. There’s my two cents. By the way I’ve had the Marshall’s (wife annoyers) forever and been collecting pedals since the 70s - (read I’m old) 😁
There's a deal on a mini deja vibe for 185 bucks. Looks like a good deal... What do you think?
How about using an fx loop? Why nobody wants to talk about this!
I heard that mike Landau worried life blues before you even said it ha ha.. I guess your not the only one who likes that lick..
Hi Mick. Im considering a small home use marshall and torn between an origin 20 and the class 5. I know spec wise the orgin is probably the best choice..but im drawn to the class 5. I will mainly use pedals for drive, but can i get drive out of the class 5 at bedroom volume?
Cheers man.
Thanks for stepping up to the plate Mick, with this excellent and highly informative vid...lots of fun and food for thought here!! Get well soon Dan :)
Nice strat
Thanks for posting! Any chance you know what would cause high pitch frequency when using a univibe (jam pedals retro vibe) after a buffer/boost (JHS prestige)
But if the order is switched- vibe before buffer- no weird high pitch frequency
????
Fuzz after buffer is sometimes a recipe for disaster. Could your Univibe be behaving like a fuzz does after a buffer.
Obsessive Hendrix fan and big Trower fan so love this. Highlights how incredible Filmore Machine Gun was as a composition. like the nod to Bridge Of Sighs too. Your obvious passion for sound and tone is awe inspiring Mick. Thanks for all your videos.
The issue w JImi was one of buffers/impedance, the old univibe had a dreadful impedance buffer which could not be used in front of old fuzz. Trower's use, recommended by Fuller at front of chain, works very well but also Robin's OD's are not that cranked. Jimi's Marshall was not overdriven but was also not that clean. Basically, all pedals work on the "rule of dominance", what comes after will be the more dominant effect. So placement of a phaser or vibe after gain increases the sweep boldness and clarity while in front reduces the sweep pulse but may sound more organic and musical to the user. Personally I like the vibe before and my phaser after overdrive which sounds more like Pagey's phaser use. If you can adjust the vibe in front so that a sustained note almost warbles into feedback then you are close to the Trower sound. All in all the Vibe is an amazing unique effect and Josh's take on the photocell circuit is about as good as it gets.
After 👍
I'd love a uni-vibe type pedal comparison.
Yeah, I've heard so much about the Dry Bell Vibe Machine v2 and I'd like to hear it against some of the other popular ones like the latest Deja Vibe CS-MDV-1 and so on
I've got a Dry Bell and The Black Cat Vibe - DryBell is great for Trower stuff, Black Cat is great for Pink Floyd. I sent my Deja Vibe back... compared to these two its a bit thin sounding.
Nice big, full sound with both amps on!!! That was my favorite, for sure. Almost sounded like you were running them in stereo. Overdrive first, for me, but I do love that classic Trower sound, as well. Great job, Sir! Brilliant!!!
As long as you keep playing, that irritating re-iteration doesn't rear its ugly head. That "bump" thing.
Vibe before fuzz is more musical. Vibe after fuzz is just nasty (in just as good a way). Just shows you that it’s up to you and your taste.
One of the best pedal demos I've ever seen, and I learned a lot. Great job!
I have a Marshall Valvestate AVT 50.... how do I loop a deha vibe and use the OD on the amp?
If you want jimi, put fuzz n then all the rest... If you want a more "clean" modern sound put the uni before the drive
both overdrives sounded fuckin epic into the Class 5
Loving the Fuzz Face face at 12:42. Just outrageous low end on that thing.
That little Marshall by itself at around 7:30 sounds nice! Ever since I got a Tiny Terror I've been appreciating low wattage amps more!
Killin it Mick!! Looking forward to meeting you at NAMM man!
Sounds awesome Mick ! Love the wah
Excellent vid!
The sound around 20:45 becomes pure awesomeness. I need it, and better find the right vibe and boxes to do it!
Before is clearer with better note definition I think. A bit chewier and textured after. I like both.
Great info! I’ve always been in the Trower camp and put my vibe first in the chain.
cant wait for the t-shirts!
Is is just me or univibe with humbucker is just sounds like phaser?
Where do you put the Univibe ? Where did you put DAN ? LOL
Very late to this party. I was dying for you to move the delay first.
Just. Love. TPS. Been a watcher since I was banished to the guest room at my in-laws many Christmases ago... Fun. Informative. Approachable. Stay well gents.
Thank you Dave, and you buddy!
2:03 The truth uni vibe fanbois hate to admit...DEAL WITH IT!
That its a univibe? Lmao
@@patrickrosington1174 no... That univibe is just a 4 stage phaser. Not some esoteric magic effect that is quantifiably novel compared to anything else.
Fuzz then wah then univibe then front of amp And I bet there is a phaser in there somewhere
Good one Mick really enjoyed that
Great playing and extremely useful info as usual. A humble request for a future show: The difference between creating compression through gain stages vs compressor pedals. Maybe not interesting enough but sometimes I struggle to balance pedal compression vs compression created by OD, stacking OD, and compression in the pre/power amp due to volume differences due to clean boosts and guitar volume / pups.
When I read your name I immediately heard the violin through the distortion. :0) it's a super interesting topic for sure. You've probably found that you get a great compression setting at home then go out and play louder and it all changes. It's hard to demonstrate, but it really underlines that dynamics and response are every bit as important as 'tone' (gain structure and EQ). The 'magic' is when you can get on top of it and use it to your advantage, rather than be frustrated by it. And we've all been (and continue to be) frustrated by it at times. If we can think of a way to offer some useful advice via the show, we will. Being completely reductive, the harder your amp is working and the louder you play, the less pedal gain and compression you 'need'. That's a generalisation, but it kind of works. Thanks for watching!
+That Pedal Show Thanks a lot! And you're correct, I don't master this on different volumes but thanks to watching mosts of your episodes several time I'm starting to ask better questions :-) The episodes on different wattage of amps was together with the ones on gain stages were a couple of real eye openers from that perspective. It explained something which I didn't understand when my 100w head broke down during a gig and I borrowed a great 20w tweed combo that was "just as loud"... but made my guitars & most pedals sound and function completely different. I've learned more from your videos the last 3-4 months than I've ever known before. Truly great stuff - you're amazing.
the moral of this video: It doesn't really matter.
