    Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    In this episode Dan and I ask and answer some common questions about classic Vibe style pedals. The original Uni-Vibe pedal first appeared in 1968, introduced by Japanese company Shin-ei and released in the US by Univox... erm, according to Wikipedia. The name Uni-Vibe is now a trademark of Dunlop Manufacturing Inc.
    The Uni-Vibe sound was immortalised into rock history by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower among others and has since become a staple of countless pedalboards. It’s a four-stage phaser that uses light dependent resistors around a bulb to creates a unique modulation effect that's kinda part phaser, kinda part chorus and definitely all magic.
    Join us as we dial in a bunch of sounds and mess with settings and pedalboard position to help you on you quest for the perfect vibe tone. Let’s pulse and throb baby…

    Hi guys, just wanted to say thanks for a great night out last night. Ended up getting dragged along to the gig by my boyfriend - when he said we were watching That Pedal Show I assumed it was something to do with bikes! Despite arriving to find the room completely packed, we accidentally ended up right in the front row (just in front of Mick) and both had a great time time. I will happily be dragged along to more of your gigs in the future! 😊

    I just wanted to say, in reference to something in the last Comments and Questions video:
    This is my favorite guitar channel on UA-cam BECAUSE you’re not the typical reviewer channel. I’ve played guitar for 16 years, and I’ve learned more about gear in the last couple years thanks to you two than I did in the previous 14 on my own. Even things that I thought I’d known, TPS has given me a clearer understanding of them, and I hope you continue on in the way you have been, because it’s why I’m always excited to see a notification for a new TPS video!

    Mick, that’s a Fulldrive 1. Confusing, yes, because there’s already been several different Fulldrive 2s and a Fulldrive 3. The other 2 modes besides comp-cut are Vintage (classic mid-hump) and Flat Mids. All Asymmetrical clipping.
    This video proves that we need a Fulldrive episode. Would love it if you guys could round up a FD2 Mosfet, an older push-pull FD2, the new FD2 V2, Fulldrive 3, and of course the FD1 you already have. Amazing pedals!

    Massively good show this week! there is a TON of information in here. How vibe's work, how they interact with fuzz, before and after drives. How they interact with pickups. This is now on the top of my playlist! It will take a while to dig in and get the real value, but that will be a labor of love. Great job guys. You both looked so happy on this episode “vibe”-ing away. My biggest takeaway was just how versatile the effect can be. With the ability to switch to and from chorus on the Deja Vibe a new level of magical tone sculpting can be achieved. I am officially adding one to my board. Ironically, I think I dated a girl back in high school named Deja Vibe. :) Can’t wait for your next episode!

    Been thinking about this very thing: fuzz-vibe- or, vibe-fuzz. And I too concluded that the amp breaking up along with the vibe into fuzz or distortion is definitely the recipe for that gooey chewy goodness Hendrix/Trower magic. I appreciate the confirmation from two very capable guitarists.

    • @davidsisto7694
      @davidsisto7694 9 місяців тому +2

      I never liked fuzz, UNTIL I used it before my Keeley Monterey. The reason is that the "vibe" switch on the Monterey is wayyyyy to phase sounding to pass for a respectable univibe pedal but the fuzz on the pedal going first and then into the "univibe" part of the pedal. It makes sense since the Monterey does not have the photocell technology and therefore not really a good stand-in for a univibe. BUT..... A real univibe has the pgotocell technology for the modulation, preamp for tone the phase and the chorus. In one unit, the ingredient make up what we know as a Univibe. On a true Univibe? Slight fuzz AFTER the univibe pedal. Right now, I'm experimenting with the chain being: Guitar --> Phaser --> Monterey --> Origin Effects Revival Drive (the preamp) --> Source Audio Gemini chorus. It kind of works but needs a bit of fuzz for character after the chorus. I do like the dueling modulation provided by the phaser and the chorus near the end of the signal. Homemade for now but budget allows for 1 pedal so it will either be a good Univibe OR Browne Amplification Protein.

    • @davidsisto7694
      @davidsisto7694 9 місяців тому +1

      Long winded response before but now direct to your question........ Fuzz before univibe if the tone is too "phasery". With a real good univibe? Univibe before fuzz and even then not much fuzz at all.

      @@davidsisto7694I had a similar setup to you (I ran a Monterey and a Gemini) and yeah, it's fun. Had a stock Phase 95 set to script 45, stacked with the Gemini was interesting. I sold the Monterey and scored a Jam Pedals Ripply Fall - what a revelation! If you like the sound of a phaser and a chorus stacked, that pedal is *it* - with the bonus of having a Phaser (the "Ripple" side) that can do a totally respectable Univibe impersonation.
      Not a cheap pedal, but it's going with me to my grave.
      The Gemini went on a small (mostly Source Audio) board for a stereo ampless rig with my preamps and IR loader

    I run a Mojo Vibe and a MD-500 on my board.
    MD-500 has replaced every modulation I had apart from the Mojo Vibe.
    I find that vibe is one of those effects that has so much personality that its hard to recreate digitally.
    My Mojo Vibe lives first in the chain before any dirt (after wah if I use a wah), which is where I like it the best.
    It behaves very well with fuzz as long as it is run in vintage mode.
    In modern mode, which adds a FET buffer, it must be placed after fuzz from my experience, but surely this will depend on what fuzz is used.
    The vintage/modern mode is set via internal dip switches.
    Vibe is an underated effect. Get one!

    I once, by accident, had my vibe going into just one of my two amps, thus making it a wet-dry set-up with no vibe effect in one of the two amps. That gave me a very convincing Leslie speaker sound, which made me wonder to what extent the Univibe was originally intended to be used in a wet-dry set-up, given that it was designed to mimic a Leslie speaker.

    Loved the show this week guys! I've been watching TPS pretty religiously for about 3 years now, and can say the stuff you go over on a weekly basis is both inspiring and invaluable to me as a guitar player. Can't thank you enough for all that you do!
    I realize this question would have been better suited for a comment on the episode you did back in July on noise gates and suppressors, but my hope is that by posting it to this video you might have a chance to go over it on your next VCQ. I, like many guitar players am trying to reduce the noise coming from my rig. After re-watching your episodes on noise suppressors and VCPI, I having been attempting to troubleshoot the problem with the steps you go over in these episodes. After eliminating certain variables I am confident the majority of the noise I am still hearing is coming from running a wet-dry rig, with the ground loop coming from running two amplifiers and my isolated power supplies through the same power strip. Although this might be an extremely obvious problem to solve to, you briefly mentioned the importance of making sure to have separate grounds when running a rig in this manner but you never explained this concept much further than that. Could you please include in a video how you are getting the power from the wall to your amplifiers to avoid these types of noise situations? Are you using any power conditioners? Isolated power transformers? Anything of that nature that has an effect on how the power is coming out of the outlet into your amps? Thank you so much!

    I had a few thoughts that I thought I’d post here, but Mark Hammer proved me wrong in his in-depth answer. 😃
    So I’ll just give you an idea for a show (even though I guess you have enough of them already): In your VCQ you weren’t really enthusiastic about a show on cheap amps. BUT how about a show on old/vintage amps that are today sold cheaply but are really good. Then you could show us how to approach them in order to make them sound good.
    I mean, while the Sovtek is not really vintage, it is safe to say it is not a enthusiastically loved amp - even though it sounds really good on your show.

    Hi Mick! Switch your Dejavibe from the modern mode, where it has the largest sweep between highs and lows and is the setting you said you generally like it in because of that, to the vintage setting if you’re putting it before your fuzz. If you haven’t tried it already. It helps tame the treble problem with the fuzz you’re talking about.

    Hey boys! Another great episode. I just wanted to let you know how much my band appreciates the both of you, the work you both put in to make these videos happen, and the knowledge that you arm this community with. Its truly an invaluable resource for us and just wanted to make sure we thanked you for it.
    A few weeks back you mentioned doing an episode on comparing different fender twin amps. Mainly the red knob "the twin" amp and ofcourse the twin reverb. We would love to see this at some point, if you can make it happen.

    The Vibratone is the Fender branded Leslie model 16 with a single 10 inch speaker with a rotating drum in front, sending the sound vertically round the cabinet, David Gilmour has used both the Vibratone and the Leslie 122, which has the familiar rotating horn on top for high frequencies, and a down firing 15 inch woofer, btw, the horn and drum in the 122 rotate in opposite directions.

    Q: Have you ever had an effect you avoided for a long time because of preconceived notions, only to find out it was the very thing missing in your life?
    Up until a few months ago, I had always written off "vibe" as vibrato (which is too out-of-tune and seasick for me). I'd been searching for the right modulation for awhile, trying rotating speaker (takes over the sound too much) and harmonic tremolo (not phasey enough). Then I heard Hendrix's "Mannish Boy" come on the radio. It was a eureka moment...VIBE!!! Just right for me in every way.

      Larry Lachmann I’ve compared all these vibes and more to my vintage Shin-Ei Uni-Vibe, and the only one that really compares is the Vibe Machine. It really chews up the entire sound. just think of the Machine Gun pick scrapes. Every other vibe seems to sit on top of the sound, for lack of a better way of describing the difference. Bottom line, you saved yourself thousands of dollars, because it’s virtually indistinguishable from an original, vintage Vibe. But I still can’t part with my original.

    • @musicmann1967
      @musicmann1967 5 років тому

      @@markwilliams142 I love mine, which is why I was so aghast when they first turned theirs on in the clip. I have the red version, which came earlier, and has less tweakability. I wonder if the one on the show was brand new, or if someone had messed with it earlier. I'm not 100% sure why you would need to tweak those parameters, I guess different guitars might sound better with different adjustments. You couldn't do that on the original Shin-Ei (I think). I don't have an original like you do, but of all the vibes I listened to, the Vibe Machine seemed the most like the real deal, so I'm not surprised by what you tell me! I also liked the sound of the mini Deja Vibe on the show.

    I don't use pedals and am definitely not a fan of high gain, I like a nice clean tone and use the volume knob on the guitar when I need a little crunch, I'm mostly a rhythm player . I watch because of the entertainment value to start with, I've been subscribed for over a year now and I have learned a lot in addition to the entertainment and some ridiculous tones and playing.
    Over a year ago I got a Trio+ your recommendation sealed it, that's how I found you. I recognized Mick from Guitar Paradiso and started to look around. What the hell is Wet/Dry, Wet/Dry/Wet etc. next thing you know almost a year ago I bought a Peavey Classic 20MH online and they offered me a discount if I took a floor model from a store that was closing so I said throw in a Radial Big Shot ABY and it's a deal. I'll never go back to playing through just one amp again and that's without any effects pedals.
    I feel like I've got so much from you two that when the only D&M Drive in my city's only guitar shop that I'd been on the fence about for months was sold to a guy who was just passing through on a several hundred mile journey a couple months ago I had them order another in for me and I picked it up yesterday.

    • @notjoeaverage
      @notjoeaverage 5 років тому

      That being said what's the chances you could do an episode on how to get started with pedals ie: what type and length and how many guitar cables, pedal cables, battery vs powered, how many pedals before a board is a benefit, how many before a GigRig/QuarterMaster is an option, what type of pedals benefit from it most, if not using what order etc. If not an episode maybe a regular segment added to pick and mix or VLOG.
      I was lucky I had a power supply from the Trio+, I spent all last night trying to find info to makes sure it was compatible with no luck and so far have only used the pedal for a couple minutes to see if it works.
      What's the chance you will be getting a Pink Flow from Jam Pedals to try out?
      On the down side I had pretty much all the guitars I needed more or less and had the amps mostly covered too, except for a Hi-Watt kit and a Blues Breaker kit as well as cabs just need a Celestion Blue.
      Now I've fallen down the rabbit hole of effects pedals and can see spending 4 figures in multiple without any difficulty.

    I'm a fair guitarist and utility musician. I am paid to play guitar and pedal steel but .... I'm primarily a keyboardist and Hammond organist by trade. I have 4 Leslies but usually use a Vent 2 coming out the Leslie socket on my Organ. The FOH deskman prefers the Vent. I always liked a Vibe, Phaser or Chorus on guitar better than a Leslie. A guitar doesn't have the harmonic content to really drive a Leslie. Its always sounds thin. I assume its because the guitar doesn't have the bottom end to drive the bottom rotor which does 80+% of the work. The cross over is typically 800hz on a twin rotor Leslie. Is 800hz+ is where the guitar really punches? IMO if someone wants a real Leslie the best ones for guitar are the full range single rotors like the 125 or an 825. The dirt and grind from a Leslie is as much a function of the organist's chord voicings and note selection as much as the swell pedal. The guitar just can't do it. Pedals I think sound better than the real thing in this case.

If you have a 2 amp setup you can get an awesome stereo vibe effect by setting the Deja Vibe to Vibrato and running it into one of your 2 amps and a dry signal into the other amp. Huge stereo Vibe!!!!! Basically you are doing what the pedal does in Chorus mode, combining the dry and vibrato signals but split over 2 amps.
