This movie's dogwater, but the prisoner's acting and situation genuinely made me feel for him. The idea of a demon making you do horrible things then relinquishing control just to torment you further is a legitimately terrifying idea that I'd watch a whole movie about, but this movie misses a lot of that potential.
i think it just goes to show how far a truly good actor can carry even the worst scripts. Just the scene where he breaks down over the meal is gut twisting and the ability to switch between two characters that are inherently so different is real skill, hope he's able to get out from under this company and find somewhere he can really work his craft
@@quarterpasttired He might think he's on the way down - he was in Boondock Saints, and even Saw 3D recently, if you consider 13 years ago recently, good god time has no meaning - and since he's been in a few Christian movies since, he might be doing this out of true believer status. But you're right, he's certainly the best thing in the film and should get to do more things that don't suck.
@@Patrick-PhelanNah, I looked at his filmography and he's been in an absolute metric shit ton of things. I think he's like a less famous Danny Trejo, where he'll show up so long as you pay him. I mean, he might be a 'true believer', but of the later movies that actually had Wikipedia entries, they didn't seem like Christian movies. Two of them seemed like straight horror and one was a Western. One actually has Danny Trejo in it too.
There’s an episode of The Magnus Archives (#19: Confession) that does this, and it’s great there too. The loss of control, and being forced to face the fact that you were used as a tool to commit atrocities, is a terrifying prospect.
they also did this in a movie i think called Host? where a woman is possessed and does a bunch of horrific shit like smashing another woman's head into paste at a dinner party immediately following her announcement that she was in remission from cancer, and then whatever entity is possessing her relinquishes control just as she's about to be taken out by one of the people she'd been tormenting, allowing her to beg for her life and, of course, not be believed when she tries to explain that it wasn't her doing those things. pretty brutal shit
I think it's so hilarious that the demon is so ANGRY at James' choices. One would think he would be all "Lookie what you did! I'm so proud of you, Jimmy!" But no, he's mad at the murder.
I really don't know if any of these even really count as murders? We've got: 1. Assisted Suicide, so he just kind-of let them do it. Like if I watch someone jump off a room I don't think that makes me a murderer? 2. An abortion that his girlfriend willingly chose to do. So it's like... I don't know how hard he pushed her into it, but it's still also her choice, so..... wouldn't the murder be on her hands then...? Why isn't she being haunted by the scary demon man? 3. Sentencing someone to death. Although in this case, it is literally someone possessed by a demon, so maybe it counts because he could actively choose for them to not die. But they're literally a demon, so I feel like that's honestly pretty justified, you know? Like if I shot a zombie or a werewolf then I don't think that's the same as killing a normal person like in a real MURDER murder, at that point you're already gone, I'd assume. ... Okay, maybe that last one counts, but fuck it, if I was the judge and I knew what was going on for sure, then I'd look the other way.
Like everything really comes off as a fire and brimstone preacher pretending to be a demon. Like it would make sense if he was someone like sent on behalf of his god to convert him using scare tactics.
my head canon is that this was some church's judgment play, and the atheist liberal psychiatrist was having this dialog with God or an angel during the end times. Then someone said "Let's use it in a movie! Hey, one-adjective horror films are super popular. Let's do one of those. Only, oh, I guess it would be sort of hard to write God into a scary horror film, so I guess we'll have to make it a demon. Demons are spooky dooky." So they made the dialog a little more gritty, but never really considered the deeper implications of a demon essentially telling this guy to go do "good" things. As someone who has attended a variety of synod meetings and church workgroups, I can tell you that skills like critical thinking and self-reflection are rare among certain more ardent followers.
It’d be great if there was a movie like this except Good where the literal demon preaching incessantly about morality actually, like…meant something or had a twist, instead of just being taken at face-value of “the demon’s eeeeEEEVil but is also forthright, honest, and correct about everything.” I don’t know, I thought demons were supposed to be subtle and sly and manipulative, not just lecturing people about how evil they are for the ultimate goal of possessing some guy for a minute or two and getting a book published.
I think the reason why Nefarious appears in the homeless lady at the end is because they just had to shoehorn in the idea that helping homeless people is somehow bad.
@@noaccount2494some evangelicals are diehard believers in the “prosperity gospel”, which is basically this. If you’re rich, it’s because you’re righteous and god loves and rewards you for it. If you’re poor or sick, it’s because you’re sinful and a terrible person and god is rightfully punishing you. Completely ignores how someone’s life can be destroyed in a matter of days, weeks, months, because capitalism is awful and rewards the already wealthy. It’s a really insidious justification and cover for those who exploit their congregations for their own benefit (look at mega churches and their leaders buying huge, gorgeous properties; private jets and luxury cars; going on expensive vacations). That's so backwards. I'm not doubting the validity of what yall said, but it doesn't make sense to me. My church was always a judgment-free zone that helped unhoused people, especially during the winter
@@msjkramey I am an atheist but I have friends who are genuine Christians; who also feel called to serve those in need. The problem is that there are denominations of Christianity in the US who follow the "prosperity doctrine". And it takes them to do some decidedly unChristian ideas. Good for you for doing what Jesus said to do: to love others as He loved us.
So after the demon gives that whole speech about how it takes years to "possess" someone he manages to speedrun the entire process in a couple of hours? This lore is bullshit.
No, no, you see, he had been making bad un-christian decisions for years, so automatically that means any demon can possess him as soon as he gives them an invite. Obviously, just being a bad person makes you susceptible to demon possession, so don't ever steal a toy from the supermarket at 3 years old, or whatever it was he said.
@@bluchismoon You steal a toy, then you get a ouija board (which is extra funny because it's just a hasbro product, like it's not magical it was patented in the 1890s), and then I dunno... drugs or something? And now you are possessed by a demon. Which is a totally real actual thing that happens in real life and totally not just something Christians use to handwave away anything bad they don't agree with.
What kind of clinic would break HIPPA for a friend calling about a patient and tell him that she had an abortion already and when she would be leaving. In real life, that would be so effing dangerous
That part irked me so much. Not even a podiatrist's office can legally say if they've cared for an individual, much less their current medical state. Yet here, this receptionist is just giving a random caller protected info. And the clinical psychologist protag should know this; his work is bound by the same laws! The film could've even spun it to make the Evil Abortion Clinic more evil. Not only will they kill babies, but also violate privacy! If there's an evil thing to do, they're just compelled to do it!
Yeah, these people often don't think about minor details like privacy laws or physics or good storytelling. To be fair though, shows like NCIS have one person running an entire IT/forensics team and also hacking into the Pentagon on the daily. One episode even had two people hacking in more quickly by sharing a keyboard. You'd assume people are smart enough to know this is fiction, but I had people regularly cite "Abby could do it" when I was in IT.
I think it has to do with copyright claims delaying releases on every other video, so they all end up coming out near each other. That being said, I'm glad he pushes through it all!
The euthanasia scene is so crazy in its messaging in part because it has the perfect setup to have an Actually fucked up thing happen in the story. James is a psychiatrist, and as you said, Oregon's death with dignity laws require the patient to be of sound mind to consent. If James had used his professional capacity to somehow falsify his mother's mental evaluation and have her sign off on the procedure when she didn't or couldn't actually want it, that would be an INSANE nasty crime that would be really compelling to watch someone squirm when confronted with what they had done. But the movie just hates death with dignity in general so it can't do anything actually interesting or characterful.
To be fair, him evaluating his own mother is a huge conflict of interest so I don’t see how he could ever be in the position to make that plan happen. I would indeed be really freaking creepy, but it would be equally unrealistic as the rest of the legal nonsense of this move.
About the Scream thing; This one actually confused me for a long time too, the film’s title seemed stupid and generic to me- until I realized that the mask the murderer wears resembles the art piece *The Scream* by Edvard Munch. That is the real reason behind the title and also the pun “it’s a scream”
Damn, I assumed it was a reference to “scream queens” since it’s a well known horror trope and the whole movie is just “what if a horror movie happened to horror movie buffs?” Your point about the artwork makes so much since, though, I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t notice it sooner. Thanks for the fun fact! 😊
Honestly same. There is nothing in the world that can save this man at this point, he has no comfort except for the smallest thing, getting whatever tasty meal he wants, to be his last comfort, his last ounce of choice... and its taken, no one feels sorry for him because he appears to have refused a meal, no one is gonna listen to him. So he has literally nothing. That feeling of devastation was just weirdly painful to see.
God yeah that was so sad. And I will give the actor that he really sold it. But like... shouldn't this be a clear anti death penalty movie?? The fact that it isn't is nasty
49:52 It's hilarious that the writers for this movie were so busy trying to prove how bad/wrong liberals and atheists are that they wrote a movie where the character you're supposed to agree with is a murderous demon. Way to go guys, you did it! 👍🏾🤣🤣
I was just about to write the same thing. Picturing a bunch of evangelical Christian nodding along to everything a literal demon says in agreement is just 😗👌
It's basically the logic of a Hell House or something, like you walk into this Christian amateur haunted house and each room is all about showing scenes where the 'villain' is just like "Check this out! This woman got an abortion, but then she died! HAhahahaa!!! Isn't that so EVIL, guys?! Hurry up and abort all your kids now so I can see you in hell, too!!!" Like they want to show someone being scared into change. But they also can't be a Christian or it'd ruin the message. So instead it's just like, what if the bad guy was also our messenger? Because screw it, The Devil would laugh at abortions or whatever and point out why they're bad, right? But then you stop to think about it for a second and it's like...... I feel like someone kind-of lost the plot of what they're doing somewhere along the way, you know........?
@@dracocrusher EXACTLY! If you think about it for like, half a second you would realize the devil or a demon would actually be trying to convince him it is fine to "sin" and not be trying to talk him out of it or tell him how bad it is, see The Garden of Eden or when the devil tries to tempt Jesus. At no point was he like, 'Hey this is bad and you probably shouldn't do it.' They could have easily fixed this by having a guard be possessed by an angel, so you would have the demon trying to convince James(?) that what he is doing is fine and understandable and the angel trying to talk him out of it. But, having the demon almost play both sides, but mostly the "sinning is bad" side is weird af.
Here's another thing about that "atheist" scene. Nefarious: "You think just because you don't believe demons and hell exist, that that will protect you?" Actual Atheist: "No. I just don't think there's something to be protected from." These sorts of religious folks trying to portray atheists are never able to grasp the difference between "denying" and "not believing." They can never quite grasp that there exists someone who just doesn't believe what they do at their core.
It's sort of fascinating in a morbid kind of way. The complete lack of someone having different priorities than you is a foreign concept to evangelicals. They believe God created everything, including morals. So if you believe in god, you're a good person. And if you don't you're a bad person. Not because you don't believe in his literal existence, but because you're denying his values as a means to spite him and hurt his feelings on purpose. They think you're only denying god because you WANT to be evil and are in denial about how awful you are. God is an intrinsic fact of life to them. They can't fathom someone not believing in his existence for any rational reason other than evil and/or demons. That's why they think they can "save" you by calling you awful and torturing you. Because they're certain the only reason you don't believe in god is because you don't think there's consequences for doing so. Which there isn't. So they MAKE consequences and convince themselves they're acting on God's will. Trying to give you a wake up call. When in reality it's just an excuse to justify being awful to others and them not feeling guilty about it.
This is perfectly worded to how I felt, and adjacent to something I think Willie actually missed- It’s easy to be like “well I’d convert and believe in god” if you’re raised Christian, but as someone who has NEVER had any reason to believe god or demons are real, I wouldn’t put any more stock in a rando telling me demons are real than I would a rando telling me Ragnarok would come soon.
Accidentally watched this with my boyfriend a month or so ago and it was horrifically awful. The scariest thing about it was Glenn Beck pretending to be just a good ole lil guy.
The sad thing is, there are actually seeds for a compelling story in here if you give it a little more ambiguity. The story of a psychiatrist interviewing a clearly disturbed prisoner on death row, claiming to be possessed by a demon, manipulating him and grinding him down. Making the psychiatrist into a character who is much more complex, give him a phenomenal actor, and suddenly the "three murders" become much more of a character study. Maybe he clearly DID love his mom and wanted to help end her suffering, but the demon begins to make him doubt if he WAS actually doing it for the money. He and his girlfriend have a reason for terminating the pregnancy, like the baby has a terminal condition or they just can't raise a baby for whatever reason, and the demon just twists it to make him believe they're being selfish and sacrificing their infant to the demons. And the prisoner's death - maybe the story ends on a note of ambiguity, with him wondering if he made the right decision and subtle commentary on the value of life. Make it a story about a psychiatrist struggling with the morality of some really heavy issues, the ambiguity of if the prisoner IS really possessed or just very mentally ill, and answer the question of if it ultimately breaks something in the psychiatrist or makes him grow in some way. ...Damn this is just making me want to watch Silence or Midnight Mass (or what "God's Not Dead" and its ilk want to be when they outgrow their diapers and put their big boy pants on). Religious texts that actually acknowledge Nuance Being A Thing are absolutely fascinating to me.
But that would allow for complexity in the life-narrative of a non-Christian, which would cause a lot of cognitive dissonance for a target audience that kind of requires a limited view of those they assume are destine for hell. I mean, its a good concept but I feel like it would need to be stealthy as hell for that core audience to take it.
@@kathleenwoods8416 Oh, I wasn't even talking about this as being marketed towards Christians. I was just thinking, in general, of how fascinating a character study it would be if, like a previous commenter said, the issues were more complex and nuanced and messy. I absolutely agree that it would need to be stealthy for a non-Christian audience, but my thoughts were that if you rework the black/white Christian elements you have a genuinely compelling story.
The actor playing the serial killer was an unsub in an episode of Criminal Minds, and that performance was also very blink heavy. In the CM episode, they blame it on a side effect of whatever anti-psychotics the guy was on, but I wonder if it's the actor and they just worked it in.
It also may simply have been that the blinking was a part of how that particular actor chooses to portray "crazy" characters- he does seem to switch his whole manner between the demon and the inmate so it could possibly have been the actor wanting to further differentiate them? idk tho your guess is as good as mine
@@LadyTroubadourtbh that makes me uncomfortable with it. He's like "what's a serial killer look like? Oh they have a tic!" How does he see just... the normal people around him who have tics?
@@twistysunshineyeah for sure. Sadly, a lot of people use common tics or various other harmless deviations from "the norm" to be a visual shorthand for "bad/stupid/crazed/murderer" and etc. Just feeds into the stereotypes and false equivalents to see so many screen portrayals like that but hey why not equate people with tics to literal demons in your film about how the libs can suck it or something, whatever this is about, it's not exactly clear.
@@twistysunshineterrible, terrible vibes. I thought it was a kind of interesting take to have the demon’s face be so twitchy. It’s a cheap tactic to rely on too. You don’t have anything better or more creative in your acting repertoire than facial tics? Kay
It must be rough being a demon. Hating humans and wanting them to be tormented in hell, but also being so angry about the sinful acts that get them there that they just gotta get it out in the form of extended rants in front of an audience. Enjoy your work, demons! Take time for yourselves!
I might be giving the writers too much credit for thinking they were wanting the name to sound like John Wayne Gacy. But they didn't bother to Google the name they chose so idk lol
I assumed the same, or that they combined three serial killers into one - Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, and Ian Brady. When I Googled to check I learned that there was also a serial killer named Edward Wayne Edwards so I dont know anymore; and that Nefarious was played by Sean Patrick Flannery of Boondock Saints fame, and now I'm disappointed I didn't recognize him.
Most killers are reported on including their middle names to limit the overlap with people who have the same names. So the 3 name pattern makes sense but you make interesting suggestions of where they may have been pulling the specific names!
If true, I imagine that's likely because the defendant would have to get to trial first to even try that defense & you have to be found competent to stand trial to make it that far, a standard a lot of truly "insane" criminals never meet. My brother was shot & killed by a neighbor suffering from severe schizophrenia and he was found to not be competent to stand trial. It's been almost three years and he still has yet to even be transferred to the prison's treatment facility because of how overburdened the mental health facilities are within the prison system. I was warned by a victim's rights advocate assigned to our family to not be surprised if he just... never goes to trial.
the insanity plea is more like the "so fully disconnected from reality you cannot even understand what you did wrong" plea, which is why it's hard to argue successfully. you can be clinically schizophrenic and have believed something fully but then be disqualified from the defense because you hid a weapon or tool you used in the crime, it's pointed to as proof that you had SOME idea you would be in trouble if you did it
It is so incredibly insane how drastically the quality of the film drops whenever Sean Patrick Flanery (Edward/Nefariamus) is off screen. Like it’s absolutely absurd how hard he carries the movie. Every other characters is pretty flat and uninteresting, but every time Nefariamus spoke I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen
I was in an abortion situation, and it was an entire extended weekend ordeal. The fetus died and tried to take me with. It started in the early hours of a Thursday morning, and Thursday afternoon required an ambulance for surgery. Required being in the hospital till Monday afternoon. Then, several months of aftercare. It is not as simple as getting an eyebrow wax, as some people think.
And fetus is Latin for offspring you acknowledge that it died in you and I'm sorry for your loss take it as one cus if that happened to anyone you love, you wouldn't have known what you didn't have. Your child was unique it had a unique genetic code I hope you cremated your son or daughter. And no I ain't religious.
Technically not an abortion but a removal as an abortion is a termination of pregnancy if the baby died it wasn't a pregnancy anymore. Condolences to you and the father and anyone else related grandparents or possibly siblings of the child. RIP little one.
No way a psychiatrist would be talking like that to a patient. I feel that they would be working within the patient’s logic instead of just being like “I’m an atheist so you’re wrong.” Pretty sure most mental health professionals would not confirm or deny any personal info a patient might have about their life. They’d probably just be like “that’ll be all for now, bye.”Unprofessionalism is the real demon here lol.
I would know things like if my therapists in the past were married. I know things like my current therapist has cats. I know a couple small details about one therapists husband like what his career was and what her career was before she did therapy. But that's as far as they will go typically. But also they would not ever talk to a person who thinks they are another entity or person like they are 100% wrong up front.
As someone who had an abortion, if a literal demon was tempting me to keep the baby I don't want from the partner I don't love, ruining 3 lives with one horrible decision, I'd end up having even stricter antinatalist views than I do now
No. A woman was about to be stoned, but Jesus stepped in and told the men about to kill her that the one of them who had never done anything wrong had ro throw the first stone. Surprise, no one was completely innocent, so no one had the guts to step up and be called out for their flaws, and the woman was saved.
@@maximillian1109 yes. thats what theyre saying. the woman was about to be stoned for sinning - what would have been considered a socially-acceptable execution - and jesus pointed out that they have all sinned, thus none of them are innocent enough to decide what sins deserve death.
I was like. In what way is this man going to be causing a murder with an abortion... of course I should've realized that they'd position it as his choice
They literally created their edgy serial killer OC name by smashing together the names of three existing serial killers (“Ed” Edward Gein, John Wayne Gacy and Ian Brady), I can’t 😭🤣
1:06:40 I mean, if the guy on death row isn't crazy, then the implication is that he *is* being possessed by a demon. Which means he's still not in control of his own body/actions. Thus, he should not be put to death, since it's possible/probable that he didn't choose to commit any murders, and the demon just used his body to do it. If he is crazy, he still shouldn't be executed because he's mentally ill and thus may not have been in control of his actions at the time he committed the murders, either. Either way, executing this guy seems highly unethical (even aside from the question of whether State-ordered executions CAN be ethical under any circumstances).
There have been cases where inmates have pretended to believe themselves controlled by a demon or such force. The assessment is to determine if it’s a sincere belief or not.
having a demon insist on the power of names immediately read to me like a comment on trans people having the audacity to want basic decency from others, including to be called by their chosen/correct/proper names. possibly reading too much into it and obviously "names having power" is not a unique thought for this movie, being so widespread in folklore/fantasy/religion/etc., but having it come from the demon demanding to be called what the movie considers a ridiculous name just has a Vibe to it. * shrugs *
As an Atheist, every time I hear one of these movies go on, the one thing I think of is "At least tell me something I haven't heard before". What it always comes down to is "Look what can happen if you're wroooooong!" But the film makers make a world in which they are right and use that as an example. And like... yeah, if I was living in the world of the movie, I would be wrong. But I don't so its a non-starter for the argument. This is the most solid piece of evidence that they aren't trying to make these movies to convince Atheists. As it was said, they are movie for Evangelicals to make fun of Atheists and feel superior that they are RIGHT, that they "have the universe figured out" (again, what they accuse us of). Its completely masturbatory. Also for the record, if a lightbulb bursts or someone knows something that I think they shouldn't, and I can't explain it, then... I can't explain it. Even if I jumped to a conclusion beyond my current understanding, maybe they have X-men powers or are aliens or time travelers (just as likely explanations that work in fictions to be fair). And even if I were to jump to a conclusion of "God", well then we have to talk about which god and what traits they have.
I'm not going to lie... I've spent the last two days rewatching everything you've put out.... I needed something new today. And this is absolutely perfect.
HOLY SHIT ME AND MY BROTHER WATCHED THIS WITH OUR DAD IN A MOVIE THEATER !!!! THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS MOVIE !! We couldn’t stop thinking about someone covering this movie because it’s so strange
I fundamentally disagree with the messages in this, but I think I'd still watch it if I had the brain power to watch a movie. Love your breakdown of it, it's a great example being able to entertain a thought without agreeing with it. Good timing, I just got paid today.
It feels so weird to hear the typical evangelical talking points from a demon in the film, yet we're still not supposed to examine any of it? Im an atheist but if i did follow those beliefs and saw a movie with a serial killing demon parroting the exact same words as me... idk i might want to take a step back and think about things for a bit
Yeah. As someone who watches alot of possession movies, isn't deception a big thing with demons? Maybe he's trying some really strange form of reverse psychology
In exorcisms, you have to fight damn hard to MAKE a demon say their name. In Judeo-Christian traditions and even Islam, I'm pretty sure, names have power. If you know the true name of something or someone, that gives you a degree of authority over it. This clown says it within what I imagine are the first 10 minutes of their first meeting, and does so with a lot of self-importance, but like, other than that, rather unceremoniously. You'd think people of a specific religion would know their own religion's ins and outs, before putting what looks like a decent budget into a relatively unremarkable film. 😂
@noaccount2494 well, mostly bc it was a dead language lol. I'm sure he would've if he felt the guy would understand it. Plus, names don't really have translations, typically irl. Like, they can be derived from a phrase or word and you can get meaning from the root. But, the name itself is just the name. Still, I see your point. Though, now I think the makers just don't understand how a lot of things work.
Tbh a lot of evangelicalism relies on the average person not having a ton of knowledge on their religion, except what is useful to keep them in that specific branch. Evangelical branches of Christianity are typically high control groups- the best way to control someone is limit their information
Judeo-christian doesn't mean anything please stop saying it, jewish people don't believe in any of the same things as Christians besides being monotheistic
“If it meant we got single stall toilets… I’d pick up a sign and picket right beside a TERF” Willie please 😭✋🏻 this is relatable though especially here in the US w our big ass stall gaps (quote from somewhere around the 40 min mark idk and i’m lazy)
The dude playing nefarious was surprisingly good, and as a counterpoint to what Willie said about him: The blinking *is* distracting, but in a kind of unsettling way, kinda sells the idea that the guy is pretty unhinged. Great vid Willie, I try to watch your stuff whenever I have the time!
In a way it reminds me of the cockroach possessing Edgar in Men in Black. Granted this is a spiritual possession and not a body snatching, but it feels similar to how “Edgar” struggles to properly control the body
I was way more invested in the recap of this than I had any reason to be. Possessed dudes actor looked like they had heaps fun playing that part… pity that role was wasted in this film. Great content as always homie. Spouse and I love watching the weirdest you bring 🤘🏽
If unplanned is the movie I think it is, there is a scene where they sing a song with the lyric “there’s a fortune in abortion”. It’s… it’s something else…
Pretty sure 'Scream' is a reference to the mask the killer wears, which is a stylized version of the figure in Edward Munch's painting, "The Scream", which also works as a double entendre for a horror movie. 😊 Thanks for a great video!
The serial killer demon actor is doing a really great impression of Brad Dourif's serial killer demon portrayal in Exorcist 3. Its almost exact, but he talks a bit faster and blinks way more
"If I were stuck in a prison without access to a phone book, I could call my mom... and Empire Carpets" slayed me, and i, too, would only be able to call those two numbers
I'm pretty sure that in the US, if someone declines their last meal they're given a standard one (I believe it's steak, eggs, potatoes, and toast, but I'm not certain on that) which might not actually have been what the human wanted but at least it is a meal. But my dog doesn't know that so I don't expect the writers of this terrible movie to either.
I think the thing that gets me about the bathroom argument is that it’s *already illegal* to sexually assault someone in a bathroom. So you don’t need specialty laws prohibiting trans people from using bathrooms, because anything wrong they could do in one is already illegal.
"The only numbers I would remember is my mom's and Empire Carpets" is the most real thing I've heard in a long time. I would also probably be able to get ahold of JG Wentworth while I was at it, which is fortunate since I'd probably need Cash Now for bail.
@16:23 As a big nerd and lover of horror I have to say it.. The movie is called 'Scream' because the killer's 'ghost face' mask is completely inspired by the famous painting, 'The Scream' by Edvar Munch.
In a lot of evangelical speaking, "murder" just means "bad-kill" as opposed to "unlawful kill". Laws are the definitive distinction between Killing and Murdering. Or to be a bit more considerate "against our interpretation of God's law" instead of "bad-kill" The bible doesn't consider human sacrifices to god or invading soldiers to be committing murder, nor when you stone someone for godly purposes. This can also change on which culture/time period is being represented - it's a legal distinction
Dare we mention that the majority of abortions are done very early and involve taking a pill. D&C's happen but theyre a lot less common than previously.
I would have loved to see this movie, but if the doctor was the most professional, straight faced, stone walling person imaginable. The moment the prisoner knows stuff he shouldn't've, the doctor just assumes one of the guards is compromised. Somehow they aquired and spilled all their personal details to the prisoner after getting hold of them, so he states he can no longer judge on this case, and just leaves. And the demon is just like '... well this is no fun. > : / '
Well, more babies means more hell fodder right? I mean, there's a real arguments for R-selection in pro-natalist theory, especially when you add in antivax & germ theory denialism.
Also the protagonist is not a very good psychiatrist… if he thought even only slightly that Edward Wayne Brady was someone with DID, that is not how a trained therapist would go about talking to said person
An hour and a half long video from Willie??? It truly is a Halloween miracle! My evening just went from boring to an absolute delight, thank you for sharing your wits and giggles Willie!
Their ideology is “if you close your eyes and want it badly enough, you can make a relationship work with anybody, so long as they’re not the same gender as you” Beautiful
Obviously this movie has a lot of problems but credit where credit is due, the whole "by the end of this you will have committed three murders" and the reveals of one has already happened (I dont agree that it was a murder but it could hypothetically be subbed out with something less stupid), one happens during the interview (second verse same as the first), and the third is declaring him fit for execution, is genuinely a super neat concept for a horror film or psychological thriller or something
I think I have found the art that angers me the most, that which is 99% potential and 1% bad execution. The general script could be so much, I can see it, but the people behind it are so much more interested in making their point that they don't allow the art to make the point for them. It really is just a sermon. And I hate it so much.
I cross stitch AND knit (and crochet and spin and sew and yada yada yada) and Leo really did choose violence with that hot take. XD knitting is indeed the superior craft.
It’s so sad that the good parts about the movie, which is literally how the demon tormented his host, are secondary to the fact that this movie is a sermon. Feels like lost potential. :(
My cat has never once been interested in my screen, not even when I put on cat tv. She did, however, try to eat Willie's hands while I was watching this video, so I think I have to subscribe now.
It's not even that the rational thing would be to believe what the guy is saying - the rational thing would be to take a step back and cite the unreasonably close, personal information that a serial killer is capable of conveying as a reason to be taken off this case. At a purely non-supernatural level, the serial killer could have connections with outside forces, either accomplices or serial killer fans, who also know this personal information and who would retaliate against any decision made - there's an obvious conflict of interest. Continuing to humor his conversation is both arrogant and potentially dangerous. ......OKAY, I wrote that all before the book was discovered, that makes this a WHOLE lot more yikes
Hold on. If the killer is actually a demon, would he be like... totally jazzed about the abortion? Why would he be like, you can call her and stop this? Wouldn't he be congratulating the doctor man???
I’m honestly not sure, but my thought was that it was just supposed to be the demon toying with the psychiatrist knowing that he wouldn’t try to stop it, or knowing that when/if he finally tried to call it would be too late to try to stop it. I might be giving them too much credit though, or may just be wrong 🤔
They could've done so so so so many good things that could have added to the horror genre. I was so mad at the end of this movie because of what you've highlighted. If I was being presented by my moms personal info by a death row inmate saying they were a demon, I'd definitely believe them but if I didn't, then the 2nd scene of my signify other having an abortion that the demon counts down to, I'm not questioning shit. Magic is real and my reality is shattered and nun outfits definitely look super comfy Side note: did you you know that you can't join a convent if you have student loans? Wanted to join one as a catholic but then got denied... thank goodness I guess
Huh - I didn’t know that. I wonder if it’s because they don’t want folks feeling compelled to join due to need rather than feeling ‘the call’ to vocation.
@@AVspectre Honestly, it might be for the same reason that clergymen are bound to celibacy. Its the other half of inheritance law, imagine the Vatican going bankrupt because a whole generation of nun's got garnished?
54:59 this sparked a fun (bad) idea in my head. I buy a cloak and tall platform shoes and stand outside of planned parenthood, scaring off/distracting people trying to harass patients.
making the demon a homeless woman pissed me off more than the anti-abortion shit lol like they really topped that somehow. but I will say I was surprised it seemed anti-Death Penalty. Regardless, your video made it worth knowing this exists because you're really fuckin funny man. Happy Halloween!
Oh thank fuck. I'm beat and broken after a mentally exhausting day and I need something nice, funny, and suitably outrageous to watch, and here's Willie, coming in clutch. Thanks, my dude, I plan to enjoy this one.
Its always a male baby those people are worried about, always a "son". When pro-lifers speak about those fetuses, they always call them either by male pronouns, or use the word "babies" they never refer to the potential child as a little girl. I find it interesting.
I am now obsessed with this movie because of your review. I am definitely not ever going to watch the movie but the version of it I have build in my head is an absolute masterpiece. Guess I'm just going to have to keep rewatching this video
You legitimately help me process jesus trauma by being so grounded and casual as you deconstruct the whole mindset of this weird section of the world that's so perfectly exemplified by these garbage movies
We've got:
@@dracocrusher For number 2, allegedly because they're dating he owns her, and his seed, his choice. Or some bullshit like that.
my head canon is that this was some church's judgment play, and the atheist liberal psychiatrist was having this dialog with God or an angel during the end times.
Yeah!!! He’s not even evil laughing he’s extremely pissed.
That elevator was so fast that my first thought was "oh he just missed someone falling past his window" not "oh he killed himself"
having a literal demon named "he who is nefarious" be the moral mouth piece of the movie is wild.

It not that ironic. God dos horrible things in the Bible, yet God's portrayed as 100% benevolent in these Christian movies.
@@K-newborn 🙄
It’d be great if there was a movie like this except Good where the literal demon preaching incessantly about morality actually, like…meant something or had a twist, instead of just being taken at face-value of “the demon’s eeeeEEEVil but is also forthright, honest, and correct about everything.” I don’t know, I thought demons were supposed to be subtle and sly and manipulative, not just lecturing people about how evil they are for the ultimate goal of possessing some guy for a minute or two and getting a book published.
Like how in "Life Zone" the literal devil was somehow the good guy because something something the director's clear violent fantasies about women.
I think the reason why Nefarious appears in the homeless lady at the end is because they just had to shoehorn in the idea that helping homeless people is somehow bad.

*HIPAA. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. (Minor side point, but lots of people misspell it.)
Is it me or Willie has been putting out a lot more content lately? I like that, he's one of my favorite creators
I think it has to do with copyright claims delaying releases on every other video, so they all end up coming out near each other. That being said, I'm glad he pushes through it all!
I think he also said he wanted to put more content out in general.
its you. jk, its me. its all of us.
About the Scream thing;
This one actually confused me for a long time too, the film’s title seemed stupid and generic to me- until I realized that the mask the murderer wears resembles the art piece *The Scream* by Edvard Munch. That is the real reason behind the title and also the pun “it’s a scream”
Oh wow, I never noticed that before, but yeah, I can see it!
Also, agreed. That pun... *chef's kiss *
Ohhhhhhh
I... can't believe I never noticed that
Damn, I assumed it was a reference to “scream queens” since it’s a well known horror trope and the whole movie is just “what if a horror movie happened to horror movie buffs?” Your point about the artwork makes so much since, though, I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t notice it sooner.
Thanks for the fun fact! 😊
the scene of him finding out he's not gonna get his last meal is actually making me so sad
Same!
I watched this movie and yeah, that scene actually got to me. I think I actually screamed when this happened.
The fact that it isn't is nasty
same i kept thinking about it and getting sad all over again for the rest of the video :(
49:52 It's hilarious that the writers for this movie were so busy trying to prove how bad/wrong liberals and atheists are that they wrote a movie where the character you're supposed to agree with is a murderous demon. Way to go guys, you did it! 👍🏾🤣🤣
Well, I certain feel owned.😄
Yes, like granted I haven't seen the whole movie but in a lot of these clips he sure sounds like a demon who is also a closeted evangelical christian
Hurry up and abort all your kids now so I can see you in hell, too!!!"
Like they want to show someone being scared into change.
At no point was he like, 'Hey this is bad and you probably shouldn't do it.'
They could have easily fixed this by having a guard be possessed by an angel, so you would have the demon trying to convince James(?) that what he is doing is fine and understandable and the angel trying to talk him out of it. But, having the demon almost play both sides, but mostly the "sinning is bad" side is weird af.
Here's another thing about that "atheist" scene.
Nefarious: "You think just because you don't believe demons and hell exist, that that will protect you?"
Actual Atheist: "No. I just don't think there's something to be protected from."
These sorts of religious folks trying to portray atheists are never able to grasp the difference between "denying" and "not believing." They can never quite grasp that there exists someone who just doesn't believe what they do at their core.
This is perfectly worded to how I felt, and adjacent to something I think Willie actually missed-
It’s easy to be like “well I’d convert and believe in god” if you’re raised Christian, but as someone who has NEVER had any reason to believe god or demons are real, I wouldn’t put any more stock in a rando telling me demons are real than I would a rando telling me Ragnarok would come soon.
Yes! Your version is so much better. Making the real horror be the messiness and fallibility of human decision-making would have been brilliant

It's Sean Patrick flannery. He was in boondocks saints. He wasn't very blinky in that so I think it was a choice for the role
It also may simply have been that the blinking was a part of how that particular actor chooses to portray "crazy" characters- he does seem to switch his whole manner between the demon and the inmate so it could possibly have been the actor wanting to further differentiate them? idk tho your guess is as good as mine

Fun fact: in most American states the "insanity defense" has never been successfully used, not even once.
In Most states? Which one did it actually work in?
Insantity cases are used incredibly rarely in ALL court cases. However, if an insantity plea gets made, it has a 26% chance to be successful

No way a psychiatrist would be talking like that to a patient. 39:54 I think “let he who is without sin….” Is actually directly about socially-acceptable execution. A woman was about to be stoned to death.
yeah that’s…thats the most literal, *fundamental* explanation of the story
When Willie says someone is blinking too much, you know that's a lot of blinking.
I was like. In what way is this man going to be causing a murder with an abortion... of course I should've realized that they'd position it as his choice
I was really hoping they were going to go with masturbation as murder, but then I realized the body count would be in the millions 😂
@@emilyrlnIf he's done it throughout his life, more like trillions
@@tealOmega980Yeah, I couldn't remember what the number was lol.
* shrugs *
Oh good, wasn't just me getting the transphobia Spidey tingle off of that
For real. They love hating others!!!

"You ignorant fool, you think your atheism will protect you?" Literally no. It's kind of a key pivot point of atheism
"abortions are not strictly for ceremonial purposes."
Damnit!

Always a great day to watch Willie be existential for an hour and a half
HOLY SHIT ME AND MY BROTHER WATCHED THIS WITH OUR DAD IN A MOVIE THEATER !!!! THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS MOVIE !! We couldn’t stop thinking about someone covering this movie because it’s so strange
The fact that this movie made it to theaters is wild
I fundamentally disagree with the messages in this, but I think I'd still watch it if I had the brain power to watch a movie. Love your breakdown of it, it's a great example being able to entertain a thought without agreeing with it.
Good timing, I just got paid today.
❤❤❤❤❤ thank you again 😊
It feels so weird to hear the typical evangelical talking points from a demon in the film, yet we're still not supposed to examine any of it?
Im an atheist but if i did follow those beliefs and saw a movie with a serial killing demon parroting the exact same words as me... idk i might want to take a step back and think about things for a bit
Yeah. As someone who watches alot of possession movies, isn't deception a big thing with demons?
Maybe he's trying some really strange form of reverse psychology
@@tevenpowell8023 I mean he kinda is, cuz his whole goal is the Dark Gospel so he's trying to literally get under Psychiatrist's skin
the only point Id give to counter is he gave a translation but not an actual direct name
There is more than one game where finding out the name of the demon is a crucial step in exorcise it
“If it meant we got single stall toilets… I’d pick up a sign and picket right beside a TERF” Willie please 😭✋🏻 this is relatable though especially here in the US w our big ass stall gaps (quote from somewhere around the 40 min mark idk and i’m lazy)
"I'm note sure what the movie's thoughts about the death penalty is, but at the very least I think it's not against it." XD The irony.
If unplanned is the movie I think it is, there is a scene where they sing a song with the lyric “there’s a fortune in abortion”. It’s… it’s something else…
I prefer the line where the clinic director says: "abortion is our fries and soda"
Wild movie.
@@tevenpowell8023 it really is, I hope Willie reviews it
Pretty sure 'Scream' is a reference to the mask the killer wears, which is a stylized version of the figure in Edward Munch's painting, "The Scream", which also works as a double entendre for a horror movie. 😊
Thanks for a great video!
The serial killer demon actor is doing a really great impression of Brad Dourif's serial killer demon portrayal in Exorcist 3. Its almost exact, but he talks a bit faster and blinks way more
I’m glad I’m not the only one who connected this with Exorcist 3. God that movie is good
"If I were stuck in a prison without access to a phone book, I could call my mom... and Empire Carpets" slayed me, and i, too, would only be able to call those two numbers
I love your content, thank you for being you!
In the spirit of a christian episode: Bless you!!!
It doesn't surprise me that Glen Beck would read and platform a book that opens with "written by an entity that posessed a serial killer."
If I had money, I would get my name on that yarn wall!
I love you Willie. I value our parasocial relationship 😂
30:30 “you ignorant sack of meat” has me dead
This movie sounds like it had great moments and if only they were in a good movie
877-cash now!!!! (Thank you so much ❤️)
@16:23 As a big nerd and lover of horror I have to say it..
The movie is called 'Scream' because the killer's 'ghost face' mask is completely inspired by the famous painting, 'The Scream' by Edvar Munch.
this christian movie series should come with a bingo
In a lot of evangelical speaking, "murder" just means "bad-kill" as opposed to "unlawful kill". Laws are the definitive distinction between Killing and Murdering. Or to be a bit more considerate "against our interpretation of God's law" instead of "bad-kill"
The bible doesn't consider human sacrifices to god or invading soldiers to be committing murder, nor when you stone someone for godly purposes. This can also change on which culture/time period is being represented - it's a legal distinction
Dare we mention that the majority of abortions are done very early and involve taking a pill. D&C's happen but theyre a lot less common than previously.
"The Agony the Carpenter Feels" is my favorite Sufjan Stevens song
I would have loved to see this movie, but if the doctor was the most professional, straight faced, stone walling person imaginable.
The moment the prisoner knows stuff he shouldn't've, the doctor just assumes one of the guards is compromised. Somehow they aquired and spilled all their personal details to the prisoner after getting hold of them, so he states he can no longer judge on this case, and just leaves. And the demon is just like '... well this is no fun. > : / '
I still can't wrap my head around why the demon would try and get the dude to change his girlfriend's decision. Like why is the demon "pro life"?
Well, more babies means more hell fodder right? I mean, there's a real arguments for R-selection in pro-natalist theory, especially when you add in antivax & germ theory denialism.
Cause prolifers are all demons lol
Also the protagonist is not a very good psychiatrist… if he thought even only slightly that Edward Wayne Brady was someone with DID, that is not how a trained therapist would go about talking to said person
He doesn’t read like a psychiatrist, he reads like a youth pastor…which is a fun irony
An hour and a half long video from Willie??? It truly is a Halloween miracle! My evening just went from boring to an absolute delight, thank you for sharing your wits and giggles Willie!
19:08 "Abis Mal" was the name of the villain in the Alladin cartoon, lol. It's even pronounced the way Willie does!
Why was his little serial killer scrapbook so cute to me?
😹
Their ideology is “if you close your eyes and want it badly enough, you can make a relationship work with anybody, so long as they’re not the same gender as you”
Beautiful
The HIPAA violation that nurse on the phone broke rip...
I was hoping Willie would remember Abys Mal was a character from an Aladdin sequel, but ah well. 🤣
My cat has never once been interested in my screen, not even when I put on cat tv. She did, however, try to eat Willie's hands while I was watching this video, so I think I have to subscribe now.
This is some of the most genuine youtube I've ever seen. It watches like a public access show. Absolute heat coming out of the knitting needles.
Thanks for what you do, Willie!
THANK YOU MORE!
I haven’t gotten to a book part yet, but I completely agree with what you said about the personal info stuff
Just got to the book part and OMGG
That is the most pro-Evangelical demon ever
Magic is real and my reality is shattered and nun outfits definitely look super comfy
Side note: did you you know that you can't join a convent if you have student loans? Wanted to join one as a catholic but then got denied... thank goodness I guess
Huh - I didn’t know that. I wonder if it’s because they don’t want folks feeling compelled to join due to need rather than feeling ‘the call’ to vocation.
