@sir-dame-sander reminds me of the BBC show Outnumbered, which had the kids improvise their parts off last-minute instructions. The youngest is a girl around that age (when the show starts, anyway), and you just know it *has* to be improvised because no one over the age of eight or so could possibly mimic her dialogue about making friends with her gnits. (At least, I *think* that was what the first conversation with her was about, but it's been a while since I watched the show, and conversations with five-year-olds can be kind of hard to follow in the first place.)

Have you ever had an extended stay in a hospital? That stuff actually happens. I was in the hospital for a month one time, and I was bounced to 3 different wings before I finally made it to the appropriate space. At one point I was placed in the pediatric wing for a day or two because that was the only available bed, and they were playing musical chairs with dozens of other patients.
After I was put in the proper wing, a convict with a 24 police detail was placed in the room next to mine. I don't remember what he was there for, but I do remember he wasn't in the proper wing. He was in the middle of his musical chair period.
And they 100% would let super sick and possibly contagious people wander about. They would put brightly colored stickers on them to warn people. I had a sticker, as well. But mine said "Fall Risk". Mind you, this was long before covid. Hopefully they take way more precautions now than a fucking dayglow sticker.

My brother was in the hospital as a child. Granted, he had cancer, but he couldn't wander that much due to being, you know, sick. Sometimes he could go have fun with his fellow cancer friends and their families. But he was often just too sick to have a ton of fun beyond playing video games and hanging out. His illness started like this kid's: a cold that wouldn't go away and just escalated until they said he had pneumonia. Then they finally found out he had masses in his lungs right before Christmas. 🙃 I just can't see this kid being so sick and in the hospital for this long without having something like cancer...

My experiences are more on the side of medical neglect. Doesn’t seem like things have changed very much. From what I’ve heard hospitals aren’t taking any precautions against viral infections even as Covid continues to be a serious problem. I wouldn’t know though, as someone who is high risk I can’t safely go to the doctor because none of them mask or offer telehealth anymore where I live. A nurse actually scoffed at me for even asking. What a terrible country the US is! I guess that first comment was me being too idealistic.

If he was just a bad guy who did a bad thing the way he acts in the movie wouldn't make sense, but they definitely don't want to approach any of the systemic reasons a good person would do a bad thing so it's easiest to just let the audience fill in the blanks how they see fit. Especially considering that the target audience is already quite good at that.

It would have to be a simple action, anyone even good people can do it, it'd make you want to die in your guilt, but it should probably not be too harsh because he is hanging out with a 5 year old.
The only answer is a car crash where he was drunk and therefore responsible and someone died? But that's so played out and some people don't like drunk driving, so they might not believe the REDEMPTION! It's the go-to for "good Christian who is in jail", but it doesn't always work

This is grim, but I think that lady went into the conversation about organ donation thinking this poor little girl would likely die, and decided the best possible outcome would be to establish Lucy's intent to donate her kidney so that it would be easier for her parents to choose donation once she passed. I just don't think any medical professional would so strongly encourage a 5-year-old in precarious health to become a living donor. And the parents should definitely tell her she can't donate a kidney right now. Actually, their response makes me wonder if they've already been told offscreen that she's going to die. That would make the dad's lack of urgency in getting her back to her oxygen make slightly more sense as well, though taking her off it in the first place is still totally inexplicable unless he's completely given up hope of her surviving.
    Anyway, um, Merry Christmas?

    • @KestrelDC

Yeah that would make a lot of sense and be rather bittersweet (sick child dies but gives a second chance at life to someone that felt like nobody cared and like he didn’t deserve them caring anyway so even in such a tragedy she can do some good and help someone who desperately needs it) but man…. they sure could have been more clear about that Lmfao. I’m not at all against the concept, Jesus related or not, necessarily but man… that execution and having most of it literally just be…. mentioning Jesus, not really saying anything, just name dropping…. was quite…. weak. 😂
Could have been better if instead of the movie being mostly her slowly dying and ending with the guy getting the kidney they’d just had like the first chunk be her meeting and comforting and bonding with Edgar and showing him he is cared about and does matter until she dies and gives him the kidney and book and then have the rest show just what her doing that does. Like have the movie be more about the impact of that on everyone, both families. Maybe the families can grow a connection over it.

this movie is really reminding me of a very particular attitude towards children that a lot of people have...... there's often an expectation for children to not only be constantly cheerful, optimistic, easy to be around, *always* in service of others, never complaining, and emotionally uncomplicated, but also somehow willing and able to engage with adults and their adult problems in order to make adults' lives easier. I feel like there are lots of people who want children to be a useful, idealized, utterly innocent emotional conduit, (and to be honest those people are often white/christians, as far I see it, though not always). that's pretty much what this whole movie is, right? "look at this perfect angel child who's never complained once and has endless positivity and love to offer to those around her, and how she teaches adults about life". I know that's not what this video is about but I couldn't ignore it and tbh it does make me feel a certain type of way

Yeah there's big vibes of child exploitation normalization in this movie. I think there's some mild, implicit (probably accidental) misogyny in there, too.
Lucy really gets objectified and used for her body (her kidney, and presumably her other organs too, since she died and they were already going to donate the one organ), as well as her would-be "cuteness," by the plot and apparently Christian-God Himself.
She dies and gets to go to Heaven, where she'll stay innocent forever and never grow up into a woman who will leave her father and grandfather-ghost for some other man, like a husband (or worse, living in sin and embarrassing her father), or get old enough to substantively disagree with either man. Her parents don't have to deal with raising a real, complex female human to adulthood, they can just remember the angelic little girl version of her. And her parents get rewarded for raising her so well by getting a boy this time.
Idk the bittersweet Christian "happy ending" of the little girl getting to go straight to Heaven before she's had a chance to grow up into a real person (not that little kids aren't real people, but), who has autonomy (makes choices for herself and has a mind of her own), just seems... gross.
(Edit: organ donation is a great thing to do IRL, although I think a little kid as a kidney donor is a bad idea. The problem for me isn't organ donation itself, just the way it's handled in this movie. Anyway, in many US states you can sign up as a future organ donor when you apply for a new driver's license, or other forms of ID issued by the DMV. I'm pretty sure I'm still signed up as one, and I hope other people consider signing up too.)

@@sholem_bond wow you really made me think with this one, you are so right. it is true that Christian women are so often expected to be perpetually infantilized and self sacrificial to a fault, and in that way it seems like Lucy was *the* female Christian ideal…….and you’re right she died before she became a messy, autonomous adult who could no longer be projected onto and used….and they did have a boy after her which def could be seen as the blessing god have them after the necessary trials of Lucy’s sickness/organ donation. like it’s really all adding up. this movie is messed up in a layered way. and no you’re absolutely right that 5 yr olds should not be donating organs, especially not fatally sick ones who probably would only have infected organs to donate anyways. 5 yr olds do not have the capacity to truly understand what it means to donate an organ and give informed consent to it or the lifetime of physical effects that it would have on them. so many things in this movie are so unrealistic it’s just silly

And that's just reminding you of the family that are Christian and making you feel happy in your religious service to him. So for a Christian movie to focus on the death of a child makes sense because "Oh she was SUFFERING and now she's at PEACE with Jesus!!" is probably what they're aiming for. It's very icky, IMO.

Even if one of the parents later gets sick and needs a kidney from Lucy (because the only one they had left failed), at least she'll be an adult by then, so she'll be physically bigger and stronger and have a better idea of the risks, more able to make an informed choice.

Her purpose on Earth was apparently just to donate organs and be "cute" for the adults around her (she's not old enough to get pregnant yet, but even at her age, her body is literally there for the use of others, who happen to be men).
Her parents did such a good job raising her that they get rewarded with a boy (the important gender).
Lucy gets to go to Heaven, where she stays forever pure, always the little girl she died as and never growing up into a complex human with a mind and desires of her own. She's forever innocent and forever her "Daddy's girl," which is how a disturbingly large amount of fathers seem to see their daughters/AFAB children in childhood versus adolescence and young adulthood (not just Christian or religious fathers, either).

There is no way a a child would be able to get out of bed that easily, roam around without assistance or be that vocal if they were that sick, let alone on oxygen. So I had perpetual eye roll on that part.

My grandmother used to sit me down for very adjacent levels of fictional tragedy every year. Now that I'm an adult, there's something weirdly horrifying about it. I would be 5 years old, shown some of the saddest things you could show someone in a movie about the best time of year to be a kid, and it'd always be used as a way to try and reinforce the Christian kerfuckery that they were spewing at me. That's so oddly insidious.

Or, it's absolutely brainwashing and conditioning, but the people who engage in this kind of thing think that's okay as long as they do it. But if anyone non-christian tells their children about what their cultural or religious beliefs might be, it's seen as anywhere from tragic to literally evil. They just think they should be allowed to do a bunch of things they think everyone else shouldn't, because they have a certain belief system.

Interacting with the spirits of your dead ancestors is something that I’ve seen some Christians call “demonic.” I’m actually pretty intrigued by how this movie portrays the relationship Lucy has with her grandfather. It’s coming across as a really wholesome part of a movie that otherwise has a lot of problematic things going on.

This crossed my mind as well. Ghosts don’t really fit into Christian mythology with the singular exception of “the Holy Ghost” which is just another name for God basically. Some Christians demonize talking to ancestors because they go out of their way to demonize things central to other religions that aren’t Christianity. Many eastern religions, such as Taoism, involve the veneration of ancestral spirits.

Bart should definitely alert the nurses that Lucy is roaming unattended, which she shouldn’t be able to do if she needs oxygen all day in the Pediatric floor, which under no circumstances would be 5yo-strolling distance from the prison ward FFS.

The second they said he needed a kidney, I knew Lucy Shimmers was doomed. There was no way the sick little Jesus-loving girl wasn't going to be the organ donor. The parents and nurses all knew she was dying from whatever her illness was. It explains why they didn't just shout, "Hell no, fvck that!" when she asked if she could give him her kidney and why they were willing to consider it.
The messed up thing is that this makes sense in a strongly Christian mind. I'm sure Lucy's parents had been praying for Lucy to survive. Their prayers were less important, even though they worship Jesus, because Lucy was already saved. It was okay for her to die because she'd just be chilling up there in heaven with grandpa, waiting for them. However, Edgar (was that his name?) wasn't saved. So it was much more important that he live and have time to accept Jesus.
God is messed up. I can say this with confidence as a former Christian.

not a christian or ex one, but I'd go so far as to say it was probably meant to be that the whole reason Lucy's pneumonia wasn't responding to treatment is that god actively intended for her to die to save Edgar - it was her entire purpose, hence the dreams before falling ill at such a convenient time - therefore no one should be truly upset about her loss because she was always meant to die and now she's returned to god having served the purpose he gave her

I think what upsets me most is I could see a rewrite that makes this a compelling movie.
    1. Cut the Jesus stuff. And the ghost grandpa.
    2. Add an actual dynamic between the father and Edgar. First the dad is distrusting Edgar and super protective of his daughter, but gradually he takes a genuine interest in Edgar's life and a friendship develops. Romance? Not required but I'd be down.
    3. The dad is the one to donate the kidney, the kid doesn't have to fuckin die. She's the one who offers, but he's a good father and won't let his sick child donate an organ to a near stranger. He'll do it.
    4. They become a blended family and live happily ever after. No Jesus and no child death required, just ACAB and gay love.

As someone who has donated a kidney to a stranger, f*cking no! I had to go through a bunch of testing including a doctor signing off on my mental wellness & capability to give informed consent. While there have been cases where children have been living donors, as far as I'm aware it's always been to family (usually so-called "savior siblings", children conceived specifically to donate to a sick sibling) No way a 5 year old could give consent to an altruistic donation (a donation to a stranger) & if their parents entertained the idea of a living donation from a 5 year old to a stranger, the doctor would probably be reporting them for intervention by child protective services.

Several times there were incarcerated patients in the room across the hall. Obviously i was not at my most observant, and this is all anecdotal anyway, but they just were... patients, not feeling well, hating waking up at 5:00 when the docs would come around, etc. (5 may be an exaggeration, but i know it was early because i wasn't sleeping much and was often awake when they'd stop by.)
Also if anyone had offered me a bible when i was at my worst in the hospital i would not have reacted with half that amount of restraint. It was a bad time and i was very unhappy

(I might have taken the Bible though, I think I had like a solid 24 hours between hospitalization and getting a bed/trying to go to sleep for the night, and I didn't have or want a smartphone back then because I was kind of a Luddite, and I was hospitalized kind of suddenly without much planning or packing time... Anyway once the anti-nausea sedatives wore off, I had NOTHING to do for hours (and couldn't fall asleep anymore). If I'd had a Bible, even a Christian Bible rather than a Torah translation, I would have read it cover to cover, I was so bored.)

The movie title sounds like a children's novel/movie.
About the doctor talking about his patient in front of his patient: happened to my grandma when she was in the hospital for COVID last year. They would talk about how she's probably going to die in front of her and told her that, which made her depressed and upset. They were really bad at making sure her oxygen tank was filled and overall care, and despite my mom telling them about my grandma's personality, they took it as her losing the will to live and seemed to slow down on trying to save her life, taking a long time to get a certain test or imaging or something done. She ended up worse off in the hospital after a few days than she had when she arrived for a severe Crohn's flare up. My parents finally were able to make the drive and able to see her for a few days, and she started turning around. She survived. Being able to see family made a difference...had me wondering how much isolation played/plays a role in COVID deaths. But to the point, it blew me away when my mom told me the doctors would just talk about her dying and stuff in front of her. Like yeah, it's important to be honest and realistic especially with patients, but have some tact, too. They're still alive in that moment, don't treat them like a lost cause too soon.
Anyway, back to watching the video.
