I remember early on after Obama was elected, he made some speech or other, and Fox News literally edited it so that he was saying the exact opposite of his actual statement. They "Fred-from-'Scooby-Doo'"'d him. I think "The Daily Show" covered it at the time.
I think that $20 to buy this movie is worth it in the long run because now thousands of people will experience it and get to make fun of it with you for nothing and get to support your channel!
Well, no. None of us would have bought it and watched it. To say otherwise would be showing a copywriter violation that cost the streaming service thousands of dollars. 😉
My father died in Iraq and as a former army brat I 100% support the troops... getting out of the army without crippling ptsd, to have secure housing and support, and to support the military downsizing and getting out of u.s. forever wars. My dad died in an unjust war and it hurts me. He was a good man. I hate conservative attitudes about the military.
Conservative don't love soldiers, they love "The Military" as a concept, as a force, as a giant murder penis they slap around. If they actually loved and respected our soldier the VA's office would actually be decently funded, Veterans would actually be able to get care timely for service related injures without ridicule. Every single time anythings is brought up to make the lives of soldiers and veterans better, its never "in the budget"
As someone with family who served for decades and got out healthy (I would argue my BIL did not get out happy - he got stuck in Italy during lockdown and went basically full Q) I 100% agree with you. Conservative support of the military is like their support of everything else - they love the idea and look of it and refuse to accept any responsibility for the outcome. Yay people in military garb! No, no funding to support them when they come back from horrifying conditions and need help. I am so sorry for your loss, and appreciate you sharing your story.
I'm sorry for your loss. We really need to do more to keep out of wars and give the troops a lot more help. Especially, with PTSD and helping them get jobs and homes.
Well, they boycotted it after buying a bunch to destroy, in order virtue signal, first. Then, they all collectively forgot about the boycott a week later because they don't actually know what they're fighting against. Which is of course nothing but their own shadow.
Not even commercials. They made one single beer can with her face on it and sent it to her, just as they'd done with countless other "influencers". It was a one-off thing that no-one but her susbscribers would have ever known about if not for the right-wing outrage machine turning it into that week's target for their 2 Minutes Hate.
@GnarlyRaePepsi A number of them also bought a bunch of said beer to destroy it on camera. Probably not enough to counter whatever boycott they scraped together, but still funnt.
And for it to be said in such a way that wasn't condemnation of the war is insane. No one wants their children to serve in the same war as them, or really any way. Well, well-balanced parents....
It's so cool to see the wall-quilt become more and more filled with names and initials. It's like a reminder of all the people who like and support this channel. A patchwork of fans, you know? Just. Really cool.
One day we're going to fill up the wall and Willie will buy a second camera just to cut to shots from the left to show the right wall every now and then so he can fill it up with even more names, lol
"Sean Hannity is what would have happened if Nathan Lane wished to be straight on a monkey's paw" is the funniest thing I have heard on the internet in a very long time, thank you
I fully had to pause, stare at the wall for a moment and then come to the comments to see if anyone else had felt the need to comment lmao xD thank you
It's wild that the dad's statement that his son needs a "better" job is exactly how ALL conservative parents talk about any "dirty" or "entry-level"/"low-skill" jobs. Like you can be happy in a burger shop, but heaven forbid that you aren't doing something impressive or "worthwhile". No I'm not bitter about how my mom treated every job I got prior to my office job. Why?
Yeah at first I was hesitantly on the dad's side, like "yeah maybe you should try to get a job - besides, if you're a garbage man, you probably work for the city or state, so you might have a union and benefits like other municipal/govt employees" (of course he worked for a privately-owned garbage collection company, so no such luck). But then the dad was pushing him to do things like get a "better" job and go to church/meet someone, and even before we learned about Nick's PTSD, I was like "okay, buddy, time to mind your own business a little bit now, you're being a Helicopter Parent/Steamroller Parent." Serving with your father/parent in the same war would also be really weird (AKA traumatic) because I'd be constantly worried about either myself, or them, or both. Nick also seems to have this weird "not-sibling rivalry" going on with his dad, as if he's his "perfect" older brother to Nick's "family screw-up" archetype. The dad has a respectable job; he served in the same war as Nick and DIDN'T get PTSD, or if he did he seemingly managed it way better; other than bailing his son out of trouble, he goes to church and does what he's supposed to do; Nick even says he "look[s] like [he] just came out of a cologne ad," which makes it sound like the dad is supposed to look well-put-together, maybe even handsome? (Even more weird for your kid to say about you - unless you're trying on a new suit and you explicitly ask them how you look in it, or something.) It's also a weird vibe because, just from this review at least, it seems like Nick is the one doing "hero protagonist" shit like stealing unwanted toys for poor and sick children, but his dad is kind of semi-framed (via exposition) as some kind of self-insert fantasy of a successful, admirable older man? (Maybe some ass-kissing representation of Sean Hannity, but also maybe not based on a flattering image of him from the screenwriter, who knows.) It seems a little unclear whether Nick or his dad is supposed to be the main character, to me.
I even encounter this up in Canada. They don't want people on welfare, but they also gatekeep what jobs are worthy enough. They say a lot of these jobs are for teens, but you do NOT want a store full of teens, or a fast food place, because it will fast turn into a shit show. All jobs are worth dignity and a living wage. Full stop.
@@Tardisntimbits You also CANNOT run a fastfood or other minimum wage jobs with teenagers even if you wanted to. Why? Because they are in school all day! Do you think MD stops serving burgers at noon because they dont have staff? NO! Most of these jobs are filled by ADULTS. My dad worked as a district manager for White Castles for many years and 90% of his workforce was over 18. Many chose not to be full time because the benefits offered by the corp wasnt as good as the social welfare programs offered by the goverment (so called welfare queens). So instead of pressuring the company to give better full time benefits, people instead hate on the poor line cook who is just trying to do whats best for their family. Conservatives are so backwards in their thoughts.
Honestly I don't believe its fully satire. It strikes me as the sort of script that is 100% serious and only satire if you disagree. "I'm being serious unless you disagree, then I'm only joking".
That's basically all conservative "comedy", they state their honest beliefs and then call it satire to avoid consequences. Of course they're all too dumb to realize that if they were actually doing satire, that would mean they're making fun of themselves.
"Cancelled celebrity giving away toys of his likeness to impoverished children for Christmas" is such a funny bit, it's feels wasted that it's not satire.
Also worth pointing out - if "cancel culture" hadn't pushed that company to dispose of the toys, the protagonist wouldn't have had anything to give to the children X-D
Yeah, if you really think about it the plot is really about how corporate greed was going to trash a bunch of products that could give joy to people and that by shining a light on this greed, cancel culture is showing the flaws of capitalism while also allowing the garbage man to do something good for the world. He's taking these disposable assets from the corporation and freely giving them to the people, which conservatives would consider to be a form of socialism even though it's literally just making poor and innocent families happy. Under just capitalism without these other instances of guilt and socialist reallocation of produced goods, none of these kids would have had anything and Christmas would be ruined. The only other way to solve things is for Santa to do his thing and also embrace the socialist side of the dichotomy, right? This entire scenario is so badly handled that I can unironically argue it means the exact opposite of what conservatives would want it to mean.
"My version of supporting the troops does not include supporting the wars they fight in" Yes. This. 💯 as the sibling of a soldier, this is what I want people to understand I mean when I say I support the troops. I am pro-soldier, not pro-military.
Not sure what branch of the service Nick served in, but I'm surprised he's never heard of Toys for Tots, a charity run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve! Where they distribute new toys and books to children in need? Which has been in existence since 1947? But, yes, one individual person giving perfectly good trash to children he has met informally on the street (and then swearing them to secrecy about it) is probably more noble. (incidentally, what were those multiple felony convictions? just out of curiosity 😬)
yeah his interactions with that kid were quite disturbing, especially the way he used the nickname that only the kid would recognize on the present, and telling him to keep their interactions secret. very gross vibes
the inciting event of this movie immediately made me think of ladyballers, and how they wanted that to be a documentary, but turns out you can't just say you're a woman and enter women's sports, it's a bit more complicated. so instead they just ran with their weird pipedream narrative as if it's really happening. even though they did the research and found out it's NOT happening.
I'm pretty sure the cashboro toy boycott thing is based on when Hasboro was supposed to rerelease Gina Carrano's action figure from the Mandalorian but then they cancelled production on it because she got extra loud about being phobic on twitter (right around when she got fired from the show) Especially since the toy safety issue complaint is basically the same thing that happened with the original Boba Fett figure from the eighties
I didn't know they'd tried to do that re: the Gina Carrano action figure (or whatever her character's name is), but that makes so much more sense. I guess they couldn't have made it a *lady* action figure, because that might have seemed too "woke" (or maybe they just didn't want it to seem too close to the real-life event in case Disney felt antagonized).
@@sholem_bond Also I'm sure rumble audience doesn't need to be reminded of a Gina Carrano connection either. I mean the youtube rip-off is infamously full of nazis
"Sean Hannity is what would happen if a young Nathan Lane wished to be straight on a monkey's paw" is a fucking KILLER line. A tip of the hat to you sir. When you ask "What do they want to happen?" the answer is simple. They want the people they dislike and disagree with to shut up, and they want the people who they agree with to be amplified. Biggest problem with that is that those people are only good at one thing - pretending to be a victim and complaining about it - so if they ever actually got their way they'd just invent a new bogeyman to cry about.
Honestly when they came to recruit at my highschool it made me super angry. I went to an alternative highschool that was filled with students who either had serious troubles at home, were very underprivileged, struggled in school greatly or struggled with mental health issues. Or a blend. The highschool I went to was for troubled students and it felt wrong for those guys to come into the school and talk up how sweet it was in the military and go on and on about how it would help us so much with school and money and everything. Literally targeting people they knew were from bad situations, they were targeting young vulnerable people and i was made to feel like I was crazy for having a problem with it.
It leaves a very bad taste in my mouth with how my highschool was targeted. We didnt get the typical foot solider recruiters, we got West Point and the Navel accademy recruiters. Why? Because I went to a good private highschool. SO anyone who says they dont target and go to all highschools are wrong, they definetly target students for the programs they want them in.
I went to a top-50 public school and it was absolutely jarring when the recruiters would show up. They made most of us deeply uncomfortable. The only kids that went up already wore military uniforms. We had a JROTC program, one of my friends was in it. I thought ROTC was creepy, so I asked why she joined - it made her feel good about herself. She was an immigrant with an accent, dark skin, and a "difficult name." People were weird around her. She wasn't Indian the way people generally expected; she was from Chennai and our school had a problem with colorism. Having that uniform on was proof that she not only belonged, she could be the best at belonging. She did extremely well in ROTC. The uniform suited her. She was a badass. This was her rebellion. ROTC was scandalous, so she flipped it. She was never actually going to join the US military. That's why she wanted to be the most promising cadet. I really liked her. I'd grown up poor and life was bad, but we got each other and that was nice. Most of the other ROTC kids were white dudes with scary vibes. We made fun of them together. I'm still uncomfortable with JROTC, especially because my school already forced intense discipline and every other benefit the program is supposed to provide. If normal schools aren't doing those things well enough, maybe we should make normal schools better. Making school better, but only for a few students, only if they dress up like soldiers, only if they're like, really disciplined, really special... that's gross. I think we should probably take that money away from the military. Maybe distribute it in a way that makes school quality consistent. ROTC was a bunch of rich kids larping for extra credit. The ones who took it seriously would be enlisting into higher-rank training. They'd have that edge on the competition. _Everything_ at that school was about leapfrogging over others. It was disturbing to see that attitude applied to a field where those perceived as less valuable *actually might not survive.* It is incredibly, blatantly American.
Nick's behaviour around this kid is so goddamn creepy (like, asking a kid he's met once to keep secrets "just between the two of them"??) You're supposed to find it cute and wholesome because you know Nick is a good guy but ..idk it's giving me bad vibes
ikr It's basically demonstrating how an adult grooming a child would actually happen and they give it their blessing! That's right kids, it's totally cool when grownups you just met give you presents that you have to keep a secret!
Telling kids to keep secrets from their parents, especially secrets regarding what they and the kid do together, is ... (SURPRISE) something groomers do. (This is true even to the extent that conservatives have weaponized that warning sign against teachers who don't tell kids' queerphobic parents about their kid's orientation or gender after the kid comes out to the teacher in confidence. Usually, the conservatives in question are defending stuff like Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill at the time.)
@@0hAHGahmi It's indicative of how conservative ideology views people, crimes/antisocial behavior, and the world. By their logic, you don't determine who's a groomer by looking at who's performing behaviors that are known warning signs of grooming, and determining who's a groomer based on the apparent evidence, and then potentially changing your assessment if the person under suspicion turns out to have an alibi, or a reasonable explanation for why they're doing a given suspicious behavior. Instead, you look for people who "seem" like groomers to you, and basically go by vibe check. Nick doesn't "seem" like a groomer, therefore the audience shouldn't think he's acting like one (just like if a certain public figure or politician you like doesn't "seem" like a groomer or predator to you, then even if there's a fair amount of apparent evidence against them, they still can't be a predator; there must be some reasonable explanation for why they're actually innocent, even if you don't know what it is). If someone does "seem" like a predator or criminal to you, according to their vibe, you can pretty much accuse them of what you want, regardless of evidence, and act accordingly. Because if they don't pass the vibe check, then even if they're not guilty of this particular crime, they must have done *something* wrong. If they hadn't done anything wrong, they would have passed your vibe check; they would be a respectable citizen, like *you* are. Or, I guess more simply, if you're the platonic ideal of the Conservative Thinker (TM), you don't use logic, reasoning, empirical evidence, or critical thinking to figure out who people are or what they've done. You decide who's guilty of what based on your pre-existing ideas about people, instead of deciding what kind of person someone is based on their apparent guilt or innocence (based on available evidence, knowledge of the situation, and logic/reason). (Like, to clarify, plenty of individual people who have conservative politics still use things like evidence, logic, and reason to come to conclusions about people and the world, and judge people by their actions instead of pre-existing bias. They just aren't encouraged to do that by conservative ideology/conservative culture.)
@@sholem_bond Much agree, preaching to the choir here! And sadly that erroneous not-a-threat vibe that those conservatives go by is what a predator counts on to be able to get close to their victims.
I also thought that this would set up a kid for being groomed when a kid would watch the scene. See? Its ok if a guy gives you secret gifts and tells you not to tell anyone. Ew, ew, ew.
My first impression is that this movie is just a safe space for conservatives I really liked your commentary about why the satire in this movie falls flat, and with how many people in real life believe things like that, I wouldn't be surprised if they did genuinely think it was a good example :(
"These people do not care if they are hypocrites." THANK YOU. I think sometimes a factual debunking can be useful, but more people need to just acknowledge that these people don't care about right or wrong, they care about winning and losing. If they get away with hypocritical behavior, they see that as winning.
The thing ab not recruiting kids in high-school is so true. I had to literally sign paperwork telling the high school they were not allowed to send my child's information to recruiters. Kind of took me by surprise.
This is the first of this terrible movies that made me actually angry, they are so incredibly disrespectful to everyone "you know you are not in the war anymore right?" THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS!!! Anyway Merry Christmas Willie and a Happy New Year! I'm excited to see what you do next year, much love
Seriously this movie baffles me, usually they’re unrealistically nice to the people they want you to agree with. But in this they still treat their own veteran main character like crap for being a veteran? It’s so confusing, and a bit more realistic than they usually show.
Gotta love how conservatives - always banging on about grooming being such a huge threat to kids - produce a movie that shows kids that it's totally normal to get gifts from adults they just met who then tell them to keep it a secret "just between us".
I ran into the dad from Smallville at an improv show in LA when I was in high school. I went up to him after the show and was like "are you the dad from smallville...." and he was like yeah. I was so starstruck I realized I didnt have anything else to say and walked away LOL it was rly awkward
@@cathyd74 during the improv show he could tell I was like “omg is that him” so they asked for a suggestion and he said “Dukes of Smallville” to, I guess, let me know that I was right LOL
26:26 the movie also treats the troops like pawns, just the government. Only caring when they can used to prove a point but as soon as that’s over they love to hide them and their issues. It’s always respect the troops but when the troops hospital is overwhelmed, their benefits are limited, and the stigma around ptsd is still very pertinent
Oh the Mr. Potatohead thing is even funnier. They changed the name for the line which includes toys like Mrs. Potatohead to Potatohead. Mr. Potatohead is still called Mr. Potatohead. It's just no longer a Mr. Potatohead brand Mr. Potatohead, its a Potatohead brand Mr. Potatohead. They are very silly.
We've never seen people be cancelled for saying they like pizza? Have we already forgotten when people tried to turn folks ordering pizza delivery into a massive scandal?
@@Hannahgs Pizzagate started with someone on 4chan claiming that Democrats ordering pizza delivery were actually ordering child prostitutes for orgies. There was literally zero evidence of this, and zero reason to think it. Right wingers literally created a massive scandal and most of Qanon out of people ordering pizza delivery to the office for lunch.
Willie I am so proud that you got this out before christmas. you really showed Knickolas! Fuck I meant Knitcholas. Puns can be hard (for not native speakers)
A few days ago, my partner and I were browsing through the lesser-known Christmassy movies on amazon or whatever, and we saw Jingle Smells in the queue, and my partner literally said "Man, I hope Willie does a video on that one!" and now here we are a few days later and his wish was granted! It's a Christmas Miracle!!! 😁😅🎄👼🌠🌟
Willie, how dare you, already UA-cam is trying to target gun holster ads to me But also, thank you for your sacrifice in watching this movie. You are braver than Mason Stone Edit: I think it's honestly very telling the way the main characters job as a trash collector is treated. His dad gets him the job to "set him straight" but then once he's deemed straight (lol) enough the job is "beneath him", which is exactly how conservatives treat a lot of jobs, such as food service and other minimum wage jobs, and why they don't support raising minimum wages or offering protections for them. They don't see them as truly valuable professions, they see these types of jobs as temporary punishment jobs, meant for young people or, in this case, convicts to go through the wringer and develop *grit* before moving on to something else. They think these jobs *should* be miserable. The GOP also feeds off of making blue collar workers (much of their voting base) feel insecure about the faceless horde of smug liberals with their white collar jobs, looking down on rural folks, so its in their interests to always be playing a fun balancing game of simultaneously devaluing blue collar jobs while also placing them on a pedestal
The protagonist being named Mason Stone is so on the nose for every Ayn Rand wanna be fake macho horseshit hero that I almost feel like they're self aware, and yet I know fundamentally that they are not.
I love your stuff Willie! 40 minutes in and you drop the name of the movie as if it's *not* the most hilarious thing I've ever heard. You're an awesome creator and I hope you're having a good holiday!
Oh my god, I just realized this movie is like that horrible conservative thought experiment about saying a slur to save a life or whatever. "If you had access to a bunch of cheaply made toys of a racist, would you throw them away or give them to kids without presents." Gee, I dunno - why can't kids who are poor get decent stuff, maybe not from the garbage at least. Good lord.
I love how the patreon sponsors have become more like regular sponsors lately, where Willie tells us about cool stuff they make. It feels like a culture of small artists supporting each other is forming here, and it puts a smile on my face every time.
"a scenario where magic exists and even still the best hopes they have poor people have for a Merry Christmas is a guy giving them stolen garbage." this might be the funniest thing ever
Don't be down on yourself for your past. What matters is that you change and grow. I used to be All Lives Matter. Then I sat down and talked with a few black people that were part of the BLM movement, talked about why they were doing it, and I realized I was wrong. I'm better now. The past? That's not you. You're not your old self anymore than you are a baby. You've grown. Be proud of how far you've come. Knowing that you were worse before means acknowledging that you're greater now. You're doing good things with your life. Keep going.
the only anti-gun control argument i've ever heard that makes a lick of sense is that gun control laws only apply to civilians, so it's unilaterally taking weapons from the people while allowing the ruling force (cops, military, etc.) to have free access to violent methods of controlling the populace. it's kind of like the "we have unions bc the alternative is showing up at the boss' house with pitchforks and a guillotine" argument except now companies squash unions w/o fear bc they know if anyone does that they'll just get arrested
Thing is gun control doesn't actually mean that, for example in my country gun ownership is now higher than it was before we got gun control. It just means expecting more from people who own guns in terms of responsibility.
@@shadenox8164 and that definitely has merit! there are a wide range of gun control laws, but a popular one that gets proposed a lot in the u.s. is the banning of assault rifles to civilians at *all*. and while i think that ideally that's a good thing, if the military still gets to use them (especially in domestic conflict) it hasn't changed much. definitely for more stringent checks, though
@@shadenox8164 also if you watch lockpicking lawyer it is downright *terrifying* how unsecured most firearm safes are. and it's not even required to lock them up at all in certain places!
Any cop who acts like they’re better or more important than the sanitation department, especially in a small town where all they actually do is harass teenagers and hand out parking tickets, is a clown
Wait. What is the toy company afraid will be boycotted? Do they think people aren't going to buy their kids any toys for Christmas or do they think the action figures that they're throwing away won't be bought? Since they're throwing away the action figures they're pre-emptively boycotting themselves
39:33 Yeah, a random gift from a cancelled toy line being boycotted over a controversy showing up at my house for my kid from an anonymous source... I'm calling hazmat and checking the security system.
Fan and avid gun collector here: You're mostly right, and while I disagree somewhat, you're 100% right there should be MAJOR overhauls, and particularly to transfer laws: As of right now, while going to a licensed gun dealer would require a background check (they're actually very on the ball about that), BUT the problem is I could buy one at a garage sale for cash with zero check required. THAT'S kind of a problem, yes? Yet, totally legal... :/ Basically if current firearms laws are meant as a safety net, it's current state is more hole than net. You and I won't likely see eye to eye on some things (I own an AK and occasionally open carry my pistol - not in starbucks, but that's only because I hate their coffee) - but I am 100% fighting for major reforms to how they're transferred and checked, and for that matter carry permits and how in some states they're not required at all (like mine, currently). There's no reason to be afraid of someone just for owning and carrying a firearm, my dude, that's silly - but a lot of reason worry if there's no real meaningful checks in place at all to stop someone with numerous legal red flags stockpiling munitions while being increasingly radicalized by wingnut media for profit (and yep, that's how it is). Oh, and actually providing mental healthcare is important too - funny how conservatives like to say "it's not a gun problem, it's a mental health issue," yet fight tooth and nail to never ever provide that mental healthcare to anyone at all, huh? "ThAt'S SocIaLiSm!"
I do think that there is a reason to be at least nervous around someone carrying a gun, because while it's not likely that I will end up getting shot, the likelihood is 100% bigger than when they don't have a gun. People can act unpredictable especially when they are very emotional and trying to deescalate any situation becomes much more dangerous once anybody involved has a weapon. And that may not apply to me as much, because I'm a relatively small white woman and therefore probably seem harmless to most people, but I also would like my fellow humans to be safe.
interesting to see someone say that there's "no reason" to be afraid of someone with a gun because "that's silly", especially in the US. considering how much gun violence takes place in this country I find it difficult to imagine being able to be relaxed around a gun, and find it.....strange that someone would dismiss the reasons behind an average non gun owning american being nervous around guns and sum it up by calling it "silly". even if the person carrying is totally fine and has no bad intentions, there's an association there, and there's never a zero percent chance of someone getting hurt from that gun. beyond that there's no way to truly know the intentions of this hypothetical gun owner, or their mental state--and for that matter it's impossible to be sure that walking into any public place in the US (school, movie theater, place of worship) will or won't result in you being part of a shooting. but I guess I'm just being "silly". idk man
Owning the libs by making us feel sorry for the complete dearth of collective talent. I mean the goal WAS to convince me I was justified in never wanting to see Victoria Jackson in anything after UHF, right? Because that's all I'm getting. You win this round, Hannity. I admit it. I've always been completely right, damn you. But damn, I always thought I was too hard on Goat Boy (I forget his name, despite looking directly at it). Have it your way, Sean, he sucks too.
Not sure why but this video seemed more personal. I liked it a lot! Your commentary seemed prepped as always, but you had these moments of cuteness peeking through. You laughed twice in the video, which was nice! I hope I'm not complimenting something you don't like, like you mentioned in the video. Just wanted to point out that I liked your video.
I have a veteran in the family, and he very much does not want war. He didn't say it outright, but I got the impression that he agrees with your view of supporting the troops, which also mirrors my own. I know you said that you were not happy about it, but thank you for spending that $20. It is helpful for those of us who are directly impacted by the words and actions of the demographic that this movie is made for to have a gimps into how and what they think. The stuff about jobs is what made me the most angry with this movie. Nick saying that he tried finding a job, but he couldn't get one because of the job crisis, and his dad saying that he was lying really hit home for me. I get that his dad was probably saying that he was lying about looking, but I could definitely see people lumping in the difficulty of finding a job nowadays into that accusation. My partner and I have both run into that with the generation older than us at multiple points, including from his parents. Slightly after that, his dad suggests going to church in part to find someone? Is that how right-wing dates happen? If so, does that make all of this a convoluted introduction to a gay romance? He did meet Santa when he went to church.... (Note to anyone reading this who wants to take it at face value, this last portion is a joke) Its also really really neat to see how your presentation style is gradually evolving! I love your writing, and you cover really interesting topics. Your laugh near the beginning made me so happy, I legitimately smiled. I was having a really difficult day, and then I saw you looking really happy while talking about the sponsors of the episode, and it honestly helped. Also your crazy face later on made me giggle.
I'm glad that you're willing to own up to your past. If anyone ever tries to use your past against you, just point out what they're doing in plain language and don't let them succeed in their attempts to silence you. You shouldn't have to worry about your past being weaponized against you, but unfortunately there are abusive people out there just waiting to jump at the chance to justify hurting others.
I didn’t know Mr. Hannity was such a supporter of pregnancy health! He must be furious at the producers of this movie for how poorly it represents his overall vibe and worldview!
Merry (belated) Chrimmus, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to you and yours, Willie. Please give the fur babies an extra pet for me! Also...thanks for sending love to us serial viewers. If I had spare money to give, I'd give it for sure. In the meantime, all I can give is my views, and my appreciation.
I've been binging your videos for the past two days while working, and holy shit! I love the way you speak about things, it's intelligent and concise and I love it!
Willie, you have such a sweet appeal. I don't know exactly what made me click on the first video of yours that I watched (or even which one it was, to be truthful) but I'm glad I did. There are so many trash content creators in the world, I really cherish the good ones and I will probably be able to get at least one other person I know to subscribe.
So far, this movie seems like what would happen if Sean Hannity learned about like... toy drives, or even just the concept of giving away unused toys free of charge, instead of throwing them out, and it blew his mind so much he paid someone to make a movie about it. And then the rest of Fox reminded him that their brand is promoting culture war bullshit, so he had the screenwriter add in the "cancel culture" bullshit on top of Nick's storyline.
Like literally, did Nick invent giving away unwanted toys in this universe? (And instead of throwing the toys out, wouldn't the company want to mark them down and sell them to those budget "outlet" retail stores like T.J. Maxx or Marshall's, or sell them in developing countries, and recoup at least some of the lost revenue?)
Willie - you have made 2023 end on a high note by posting so much content!! Also, I am just an internet rando but I would frog your stitches and redo your quilt to make all the names fit around you and show properly if you gave me measurements and sent it to me. And I say that as someone who crochets and doesn't knit. I would abandon all other responsibilities until it was done, because seeing names fall behind your head, off to the side, and up at the top while blank patches dominate so much prime real estate keeps me up at night. Jk. But not.
Dad from Smallville -> John Schneider. I’d like to say I’m surprised because I absolutely loved Smallville, but his other claim to fame is The Dukes of Hazzard, a show famous for a car with confederate flag painted on it and booty shorts.
Hello!! This is the first video of yours I stumbled upon, and it's one of the funniest nonchalantly roasting movie review I've seen in a while. I will watch your other videos now!
Thank you, Willie! I'm glad you did it because now none of us have to. And we can see how hypocritical they are even in their media. It was a horrendous movie, and you did a great job calling them out on their BS.
Another fantastic video! Keep them coming. The pressure is intentional. I'm just here to help. Protestant church congregations, at least the ones I grew up around, do not have a service on Christmas Eve. It's actually unusual to go to the auditorium to pray, but I suspect it's just an easy device to use in media. It would make more sense for the character to visit the home of an elder or a family member to have the moments that take place in the pews. In the churches I grew up in and around, the lights aren't even on in the auditorium/sanctuary most of the week.
You did a really wonderful job summing up the inconsistencies within general conservative politics/perspectives-- I think this is one of my favorites of your videos so far!
Ooh, I missed this posting yesterday and I'm glad I got to see it today. I'm currently knitting socks, and knitting time with Willie is a great time for me to get some more of it done.
I support the troops being allowed to desert the military immediately without punishment and being assisted to go home free and easy whenever they want because they realized they made a mistake. Being in the US military right now is a mistake. But they take away the freedom of choice from these often very young people. So if you really support them, I think you gotta support their full freedom to quit whenever they want to and not be forced or coerced in any way. but most people dont even think about that.
Thank you so much Willie for doing what you do and doing it so well. It brings some light into my life that is needed. You are a talented man in so many ways.
Holly happidays Willie, thanks for your videos they have been helping me get through a rough time. When I have the money to donate I’ll be requesting a critique of the classic musical seven brides for seven brothers. Hope you’re well :)
Conseverties love being canceled. They can go far right and be completely unhinged. Also, I support the troops by saying they need mental health care and homes.
The Scooby doo movie did a better job with cancel culture satire when their reporters edited their footage to make Fred say he thinks Coolsville sucks
omg yes I forgot about that
I remember early on after Obama was elected, he made some speech or other, and Fox News literally edited it so that he was saying the exact opposite of his actual statement. They "Fred-from-'Scooby-Doo'"'d him. I think "The Daily Show" covered it at the time.
Wow fred said he thinks coolsville sucks? I'm so disappointed

getting out of the army without crippling ptsd, to have secure housing and support, and to support the military downsizing and getting out of u.s. forever wars.
Sorry for your loss friend, thanks for your love and care 💗
Conservatives fetishize war and military almost as much as they’re scared of black people, Mexicans, and brown people
As someone with family who served for decades and got out healthy (I would argue my BIL did not get out happy - he got stuck in Italy during lockdown and went basically full Q) I 100% agree with you.
The side that made this movie also unironically boycotted a beer company for using a trans person in some commercials
Well, they boycotted it after buying a bunch to destroy, in order virtue signal, first. Then, they all collectively forgot about the boycott a week later because they don't actually know what they're fighting against. Which is of course nothing but their own shadow.
A commercial I never would’ve known existed if they hadn’t boycotted it. Stating the irony would be redundant.
Yeah, they’re always like „omg woke people are such snowflakes“ and then just literally cry because they see a trans person
"Father's and Son serving in the same war 20 years apart" said as just filler dialog is WILD
Right, why did they point it out? Nobody made them!

Why?
They have to pretend some jobs are just ‘entry level’ or whatever as an excuse to underpay people. Gotta keep the corporate overlords happy.
But then the dad was pushing him to do things like get a "better" job and go to church/meet someone, and even before we learned about Nick's PTSD, I was like "okay, buddy, time to mind your own business a little bit now, you're being a Helicopter Parent/Steamroller Parent."
Serving with your father/parent in the same war would also be really weird (AKA traumatic) because I'd be constantly worried about either myself, or them, or both. (Even more weird for your kid to say about you - unless you're trying on a new suit and you explicitly ask them how you look in it, or something.)
It's also a weird vibe because, just from this review at least, it seems like Nick is the one doing "hero protagonist" shit like stealing unwanted toys for poor and sick children, but his dad is kind of semi-framed (via exposition) as some kind of self-insert fantasy of a successful, admirable older man?
My dad tried that ONCE, until I told him that when I acted like my customers as a kid, he hit me. He isn't capable of doing my "low-skill" job.
Honestly I don't believe its fully satire. It strikes me as the sort of script that is 100% serious and only satire if you disagree.
"I'm being serious unless you disagree, then I'm only joking".
schrödinger's satire ig
schrödinger's satire ig
That's basically all conservative "comedy", they state their honest beliefs and then call it satire to avoid consequences. Of course they're all too dumb to realize that if they were actually doing satire, that would mean they're making fun of themselves.
Conservatism in a nutshell
“They’re throwing rocks? What is this the West Bank?!” My jaw dropped oh man fuck this movie
God canceled that guy in order to do a Christmas miracle. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
"My version of supporting the troops does not include supporting the wars they fight in"
Yes. This. 💯 as the sibling of a soldier, this is what I want people to understand I mean when I say I support the troops. I am pro-soldier, not pro-military.
My grandfather served and I entirely agree. I support their troops and believe they deserve better leadership and support.
Jesus trash??
To kids ?
Nuh uh
yeah his interactions with that kid were quite disturbing, especially the way he used the nickname that only the kid would recognize on the present, and telling him to keep their interactions secret. very gross vibes
the inciting event of this movie immediately made me think of ladyballers, and how they wanted that to be a documentary, but turns out you can't just say you're a woman and enter women's sports, it's a bit more complicated. so instead they just ran with their weird pipedream narrative as if it's really happening. even though they did the research and found out it's NOT happening.
But they'll still lie about it to their audience, after their own released research proves them wrong.
I'm pretty sure the cashboro toy boycott thing is based on when Hasboro was supposed to rerelease Gina Carrano's action figure from the Mandalorian but then they cancelled production on it because she got extra loud about being phobic on twitter (right around when she got fired from the show)
Especially since the toy safety issue complaint is basically the same thing that happened with the original Boba Fett figure from the eighties
That makes more sense! Doesn't change the fact that they tried to boycott hasbro

It was disturbing to see that attitude applied to a field where those perceived as less valuable *actually might not survive.*
It is incredibly, blatantly American.
Ew, ew, ew.
My first impression is that this movie is just a safe space for conservatives
I really liked your commentary about why the satire in this movie falls flat, and with how many people in real life believe things like that, I wouldn't be surprised if they did genuinely think it was a good example :(
Which is hilarious, considering they mock safe spaces with that one line lol.

Willie, how dare you, already UA-cam is trying to target gun holster ads to me
But also, thank you for your sacrifice in watching this movie. You are braver than Mason Stone
Edit: I think it's honestly very telling the way the main characters job as a trash collector is treated. His dad gets him the job to "set him straight" but then once he's deemed straight (lol) enough the job is "beneath him", which is exactly how conservatives treat a lot of jobs, such as food service and other
minimum wage jobs, and why they don't support raising minimum wages or offering protections for them. They don't see them as truly valuable professions, they see these types of jobs as temporary punishment jobs, meant for young people or, in this case, convicts to go through the wringer and develop *grit* before moving on to something else. They think these jobs *should* be miserable.
The GOP also feeds off of making blue collar workers (much of their voting base) feel insecure about the faceless horde of smug liberals with their white collar jobs, looking down on rural folks, so its in their interests to always be playing a fun balancing game of simultaneously devaluing blue collar jobs while also placing them on a pedestal
basically negging blue collar workers
The Google ad algorithm was showing me gun holster ads for a long time too, I have no idea what triggered it (no pun intended).

the only anti-gun control argument i've ever heard that makes a lick of sense is that gun control laws only apply to civilians, so it's unilaterally taking weapons from the people while allowing the ruling force (cops, military, etc.) to have free access to violent methods of controlling the populace. it's kind of like the "we have unions bc the alternative is showing up at the boss' house with pitchforks and a guillotine" argument except now companies squash unions w/o fear bc they know if anyone does that they'll just get arrested

Yeah I’m very confused by that plot point
Basically if current firearms laws are meant as a safety net, it's current state is more hole than net.
And that may not apply to me as much, because I'm a relatively small white woman and therefore probably seem harmless to most people, but I also would like my fellow humans to be safe.
just out of curiosity from someone outside the US: other than for collecting what do you need an AK for?
interesting to see someone say that there's "no reason" to be afraid of someone with a gun because "that's silly", especially in the US. considering how much gun violence takes place in this country I find it difficult to imagine being able to be relaxed around a gun, and find it.....strange that someone would dismiss the reasons behind an average non gun owning american being nervous around guns and sum it up by calling it "silly". even if the person carrying is totally fine and has no bad intentions, there's an association there, and there's never a zero percent chance of someone getting hurt from that gun. beyond that there's no way to truly know the intentions of this hypothetical gun owner, or their mental state--and for that matter it's impossible to be sure that walking into any public place in the US (school, movie theater, place of worship) will or won't result in you being part of a shooting. but I guess I'm just being "silly". idk man
Owning the libs by making us feel sorry for the complete dearth of collective talent.
You are my favorite creator!! Thank you for all the work you do ❣️🫶
❤️❤️❤️
Not sure why but this video seemed more personal. I liked it a lot! Your commentary seemed prepped as always, but you had these moments of cuteness peeking through. You laughed twice in the video, which was nice! I hope I'm not complimenting something you don't like, like you mentioned in the video. Just wanted to point out that I liked your video.
I noticed that too! The laughing warmed my heart
So criminally early i cant even say anything about the video, but im sure it a banger as always!
(Note to anyone reading this who wants to take it at face value, this last portion is a joke)
Its also really really neat to see how your presentation style is gradually evolving!
Thanks for posting and saving Christmas, Willie!
I'm also a knitter. I just stumbled across your channel. You are brilliant!!! Thank you for giving me something to listen to while I knit!!!
As always thank you for being a gem Willie
I didn’t know Mr. Hannity was such a supporter of pregnancy health! He must be furious at the producers of this movie for how poorly it represents his overall vibe and worldview!
What?
@@TheProxy066 It was a dumb joke about how Willy donated under Hannity’s name. No other layers than that!
Merry (belated) Chrimmus, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year to you and yours, Willie. Please give the fur babies an extra pet for me!
Also...thanks for sending love to us serial viewers. If I had spare money to give, I'd give it for sure. In the meantime, all I can give is my views, and my appreciation.
yes! and hey, could you tell me what your PFP is? i see it everywhere but it's not my spiral... mine's from Unicult.
Hooray for new Willie! Ive very much become addicted to your content 💝 Wow that artwork is stunning!! 😮
I've been binging your videos for the past two days while working, and holy shit! I love the way you speak about things, it's intelligent and concise and I love it!
Thanks!
Thank YOU!!!
Maybe it’s easier to get on SNL than I previously thought, oof at that acting
Thanks for the video! Have a nice day, Willie!!!
You have a NICER day!!! (Thank you!!!)
Holy smokes, the patron's art is absolutely incredible. What a gorgeous, characterful style.
Hey Willie, this video slapped! thanks :)
This makes me very happy to hear! Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Willie - you have made 2023 end on a high note by posting so much content!!
As one of the troops I really appreciate your grasp of nuance
This was a great video Willie, thank you for posting as always.
Congratulations on getting this out before Christmas!
You did a really wonderful job summing up the inconsistencies within general conservative politics/perspectives-- I think this is one of my favorites of your videos so far!
OH SHIT I DISCOVERED HOW TO SUPER THANKS!!
HELL YEAH!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
Santa dude looked like Jack Black for a second
Happy Christmas Willie, you crazy, kooky dude! Thank you for all the laughs in 2023 😊👍
1:01:55 Things like this are why I hang around for the "posing for a thumbnail" bits at the end, lol
Ooh, I missed this posting yesterday and I'm glad I got to see it today. I'm currently knitting socks, and knitting time with Willie is a great time for me to get some more of it done.
Another great video. I hope your channel continues to grow.
Knitcolas owes me ten bucks
I support the troops being allowed to desert the military immediately without punishment and being assisted to go home free and easy whenever they want because they realized they made a mistake. Being in the US military right now is a mistake. But they take away the freedom of choice from these often very young people. So if you really support them, I think you gotta support their full freedom to quit whenever they want to and not be forced or coerced in any way. but most people dont even think about that.
I think this is my favorite video of yours yet, love what you do. Excited to see the stuff you’ll make in the future.
❤️❤️❤️
Haven't watched the full video yet, but I think the art at 1:59 is absolutely gorgeous.
One man’s “dad from Smallville” is another Mel’s “one a Them Duke Boys”. #middleaged #yeehaw
Willie video release days are always good days!
Always love your videos, thanks for doing what you do. ❤
Thank you so much Willie for doing what you do and doing it so well. It brings some light into my life that is needed. You are a talented man in so many ways.
I was so sad to see the actor playing the CEO character. I remember when he was in Batman. T_T
Excellent video!
8:12 the term is "turn for the worse", as in things have changed to be worse than they were before. She said "turn for the worst"... 🤦🏻♀️
I would not be able to sit down and watch this movie, so I am glad Willie is here to tell me about it.
1:00:37 did he say, “Merry Christmas?!” Cancel ‘im! Kidding. Grand vid youse. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to ya.
27:26. They pulled the toy from the shelves because kids kept shooting each other's eyes out.....pfft, typical ❄️❄️..am I right??
