Cub Cadet Lawn Mower Won't START? -Carburetor Problem-

  • After a full season of reliability since the electrical problem was repaired in May (defective PTO switch), the old Cub Cadet lawn tractor ran out of gas and did not want to start-up again. After making sure that the Kohler Command Pro engine was getting spark, it was determined that sure enough, the carb must have swallowed some garbage from the bottom of the float bowl or gas tank and is starving for gas.... With winter approaching, Matt had to double down to get this fix done on time.
    In this video you get to see fuel system diagnostics, Keihin carburetor removal, inspection and cleaning, fuel filter replacement, as well as troubleshooting the rebuild carb after some mistakes were made during assembly.

    you missed a jet/adjustment screw. its hidden behind the flat plug beside the fuel solenoid. on the fuel solenoid bracket you have the 2 screws that hold it on then there is another hole that is where the adjustable jet is just remove the plug by tapping it so it pivots out . then you'll see it. I've had to clean it out before.

      Luckily my problem wasn’t there because I would have been scratching my head on that one!!! I’ll keep an eye out for that next time I have the carb appart (hopefully in many, many years!!!).

    Matt, I have a 1050. I got it free from a family member, it sat for about 10 or so years without being used. I replaced all the fuel lines, as well as the carburetor, and fuel pump, among other items on the mower. It will now turn over but won't start. If I put some gas down the air intake, the mower will start and run strong until the fuel runs out. I am guessing the carb needs to be adjusted. I have read that turning down the adjuster screw all the way and then backing it off 2-3 turns. I believe I have the correct screw, put perhaps not. The pump is pumping plenty of fuel to the carb.

      @mattsws  2 роки тому

      When you say you replaced the carb, you mean that you put a new one?? It sounds more like a dirty card issue if its still the carb that sat 10 years. Make sure carb is clean and then you can fine tune the adjustment screw, but it should run regardless. Hope this helps!

      @@mattsws Hello Matt. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I ordered a replacement carb. The new one looks identical to the one that came off. I still have not figured why the mower won't run. Honestly, I have put a few more hours into taking it apart, cleaning items down and "adjusting" the carb. At this point I took it to a shop so they can look at it. The mower only has 68 hours on it (or at least that is what the hours display has on it, I believe this is correct). At this point the mower needs to mow or find another home. The shop told me that they ordered a few parts, and they are waiting for them to come in. I did not ask what they ordered, but I should be able to pick up the mower this week. I have been using an order zero turn that does fine. It quite raining here about a month ago, so the grass has not really gown much over the last month. What would you consider high hours for a mower? The zero turn has over 600 hours on it.

    So what was the issue at the 0:01 mark start up? I’m experiencing the same issue. New battery… but now after two weeks it won’t start up. (Very similar to the very beginning of the video). Cranks… belts pull…. But not firing. Maybe needs new spark plugs?

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  2 роки тому

      There was crap in the carb that was preventing gas from getting to the engine.

  • @philliphall5198

    Also add a fuel filter just where fuel enters carb will save you problems

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Рік тому

      Yeah, mine is before the pump, but you are right about having it closer to the carb.

    the float in the carb is a real common mistake. step 1 if no start look down carb throat to see if misting/wet then fuel quality

    yea I forgot, on the throttle that screw you removed that left the throttle open fully then put back in is the 2 horsepower screw. that's the difference in a 18 hp engine and the 20 horsepower engine, that screw.

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Рік тому +1

      OMG!!! Thats what it looked like to me, but I couldn’t believe that they would do that! I hope they sold both engines for the same price…… If not, I would have felt screwed (no pun intended)! Thanks for the great info and thanks for watching!!

    I can't access the carb mounting bolts from the top. Bolts go in from the bottom. Looks like I'm going to have to remove the intake manifold to access the bolts. Anyone have any suggestions?

    On the fuel selonoid on the carb. You can shave it down or shave it off... I did that for my 2518 cub cadet....It was draining my battery cause I got rid of all the protection stuff, had a fuel in switch, kill switch and push button start, got rid of the selonoid nipple and cut the wires to it and havent had issues since

    • @mattsws
      @mattsws  Рік тому

      Yeah, I think the only reason they have the gas solenoid is to avoid backfires or dieseling when you shut off the engine... If you don't mind that, then you are right, just cut it out! Thanks for the comment!!

      @@mattsws im not one to turn my mower on or off as its full throttle like every dad out there. I let it idle to warm up, idle before it shuts off, ive never had an issue for some time now and I do alot of woods crawling, starting and stopping, if I havent had an issue even in the middle of a river i doubt you will. But how would it diesel away? If anything I got an inline fuel valve and a spark kill. Ive had this puppy hot like the exhaust was glowing red and melted but never had it run or give me issues I really think that selonoid is Just for bs reasons and its not needed. Pluss without a needle it assures its not am issue😂😂
