For me, the safety harness wire under the seat had one of the rubber plugs connecting it to the frame come unstuck. Inserting the plug was all it took to get it to fire up. Thank you so much for a clear explanation of all the other bits and how to check them. You've been most helpful.
Dude God bless you (Alice's husband) first mow of the year, had given it a total tune up started fine... then NOTHING!! After watching your video it turned out that a small pine cone got between the brake pedal and that switch you pointed out, I would have never found that on my own...THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
Yay - simple advice and the very first bullet point was my answer! I didn't realize my pto switch was up just enough to inhibit the start. Now it's rolling. Thanks for the good work!
Thank you for this video! My cub worked all day and then when I went to start it up to put it away, I got nothing! I saw your video and the first thing I checked was the battery connections. One was loose. I tightened it and thought "it can't be this easy", but it turned right over!!! I was ready to call the mower shop and have them work on it. But thanks to you, a couple twists of the wrench and its good as new. THANK YOU for helping those of us who are not mechanically inclined! :)
This has to be one of the BEST tutorials we've ever seen. Our Cub Cadet (an older model for sure) ran out of gas in the middle of a mow. After returning and filling the tank... the engine wouldn't even turn. Brand new battery... and we even changed the fuse. didn't;t realize there were so many more connections to check. Will be checking your other points next. It was also suggested by a neighbor that there is a reset switch after running out of gas? That would probably be too easy... thanks so much for this excellent video.. we subscribed.
Thanks for your tips. My mower is just a little different than the one you show. one thing, the fuse by the battery is right within reach. Thats the first thing I checked,it was OK. Then I went to the brake safety switch. Very hard to see! I could see that it was engaging the switch but couldn't see to follow the wires. I just felt around a little under there & removed a bunch of debris & dried grass clippings. Decided o try starting one more time just in case that was the problem. (I already had my car & battery cables ready to jump it) Well!! guess what ! It started right up!! Thanks for your easy to understand video!
Bro thank you so much, I was outside sitting with the battery on a charger, I sat there for thirty mins, before looking this up, I can't believe I didn't notice the blades were engaged
Thank you got it started after watching video. My spark plug was not engaged and I had mud stuck in pedal that engages that switch. Appreciate your help. Single female nurse and broke lol. Replaced battery and it still was not starting. My grass is like three feet. Lawd guess I should stop mud bogging on lawn mower 😅
Glad my video helped you. If your grass is long don’t try to mow it fast. You might have to mow it a couple times. Once set to the highest setting then mow a second time at your normal setting. Just don’t want you to break your mower again. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this video! the first ride I had with my husbands new mower I ran out of gas and it stopped. I filled it back up and it still wouldn’t start. I couldn’t figure out what I did wrong I called my husband for help and he told me I must have broken it somehow. The blade was still down! We are both very thankful I didn’t wreck the new cub cadet!
Thanks so much, first mow of the season, just bought my first home and first lawn mower, didn’t unplug battery all winter 🤦🏽♀️🙄 you’re video save me a lot of money I’m sure, charged the battery off my car and viola, she’s running like a champ! Thank you again
Great video. Clear, concise, good videography. Wish others were as thorough and clear. Great job. I learned that there is a fuse that may prevent starting my cub. Good for future use just in case.
Great video- want to add in case someone has a similar problem: Our no crank no start was due to the brake switch was pushed about 40 degrees off center (husband probably hit something) Had to recenter/align it with the striker and tighten the bracket back. Started right up then.
Thanks for confirming jumping off from the manual and where the fuse is (20 volts), since the manual does not show that before I spend hundreds for someone to pick it up tomorrow. I feel empowered to try one last thing, bc mine is probably a simple fix.
Hey Jim! I just replaced my air filter and gas filter on my Cub cadet. I had to replace both before it would start. Got my lawn mowed today as planned, thanks to you!
embarrassed to say it was the very first step. Something I know but was just not thinking about as the cause for the non-start. Thanks for saving me all the time and headache!
Tip #1 is crazy simple but oh so vital and this is the first video I’ve seen that addresses it. If the blades are engaged the mower will not start but when the key is turned it sounds exactly like a solenoid / starter / battery issue. Well done !
Total saved my azz, really bad week second start of the year, had to jump start it last week first of tye year, I forgot to turn off the blade engage when parked. Was so mad, thank-you for my dumb easy mistake!😊
Dude holy crap.. I'm pretty mechanically inclined right well I was mowing and it died on me because of I think low oil. So I topped it off and for the past 2 days couldn't figure out why it wasn't hitting the starter. My stupid idiot self left the PTO on when it died........ It took 30 videos but yours was literally the one that made my light bulb light up. Thanks 😂😂😂😂
Jim I own the Cub Cadet SLTX1054 Hydrostatic if the fuse was bad would I still hear a click noise when I go to turn it over? It makes a one time clicking noise but nothing more. Last year when I parked it for the season ran great so thinking it just might be my battery fully dead?
@@DIYJIM yes I did that all it is doing is a click noise so I ran a few test for starter and that was good power supply but my solenoid is where the issue lays 12.00 dollar fix ty again.
Watching this video just one minute told me why my 1045's starter wouldn't engage! I'd hit a metal post that's around my vegetable garden and for whatever reason it made the deck belt pop off(I mow down on Position 2). Put the belt back on...not exactly simple...but then as soon as I turn the key on I kept hearing a click..."What is that?!". That was the solenoid for the deck engagement. I'd never pushed the PTO button back in! What an idiot! I was all ready to call the shop for service.
I have a fully charged battery; mine requires a "boost" jump start. I think they under specified the CCA required to start my XT1 LT50 fab. I'm likely to get an Autozone replacement.
Just got home from Home Depot with my new Cub Cadet. Hooked up the battery and nothing. My heart sank. Just watched 3 minutes of your great video and found the problem to be the mower was engaged. Disengaged it and she started right up. Thank you for saving me a day of frustration!! Great job.
I have both a cub cadet and a John deere. The cub cadet is 6 years older than the JD, and the JD has crapped out after many repairs. The only way I'd get another JD riding mower is if they gave it to me. But I would always keep my Cub Cadet.
Thanks for the video, buddy. Unfortunately I’m looking for a video that goes a bit more in depth regarding the electrical system (keeps blowing a fuse), but this is great for anybody unfamiliar with a lot of the basic components. I propose that your next video should be about your arm routine haha.
So my Cub Cadet XT1 just clicks. Been in garage all winter. Battery is fully charged. Does this sound like the solenoid? Is the solenoid mounted underneath behind the battery?
We have a 2007 model year Cub Cadet GT1554. Sometimes the tractor will not start and the PTO light is on but the PTO switch is off. If we wiggle wires to the PTO and pull the PTO switch on and off a few times, the light goes out and the mower starts. Do you think that the problem is the PTO pull switch is going bad or the actual power takeoff?
I just acquired a Cub Cadet LT1550 for free because it wouldn't start. It was missing a fuse and the cruise control switch had to be pushed downward to start. Good luck boys!
There is a micro switch down by the tranny fan on my LTX1046 I can't figure out what it is. There is 2 wires going to it, a yellow and green. The yellow got pulled out due to someone not tying down the wires properly! My guess is it's some type of grounding switch because of the green wire. Doesn't show it in the official schematic! Must not be too important, the mower still runs and mows. Real curious what it would be? I'm a real stickler when comes to disconnected wires! Help? Thanks in advance!
Great post. Unfortunately, I'm still not able to start my LTX 1042 KW. I've put in a new battery, new spark plugs with correct gap, new air filter, and fuel filter. Gas is fresh non-oxy. Terminal wires are fine, I sanded them to make sure a good connection is made. Seat plug fine. I was going to change oil and filter but need to get it started first. The only thing I couldn't locate was a fuse below the battery compartment. Any ideas other than shooting some starting fluid in the cylinders? It makes a whining sound when the key is turned but won't fire up or turn over. Thanks!
You should make a small video and say what you did and put it on one of the small engine channels on Facebook. You will get a lot of answers might help you.
I was suprised that you didn't use the multimeter to check the fuse. I have had some that were good by visual inspection turn out to be bad checking with the meter. I might be good to show people how to check the fuse just by putting the probes on the metal on top of the fuse and not having to pull the fuse. (Enen handier on a car with a row of fuses.)
All good things to check but not a very efficient way to locate the problem. Best bet is to try and narrow it down before running all over the mower. If it doesn’t crank it is not the spark plugs, fuel quality or fuel filter. If it cranks do you have spark?
I have the CC LT 1045 with the Kohler Courage 20. The battery is good, and I have a new starter. I can turn the engine by rotating the fan cover. The starter does engage the flywheel. Sometimes, it's as if there isn't enough torque to crank, and sometimes it just whines. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will start. Any solutions? Anyone? Thanks in advance.
I have a similar model but my battery is located under the steering wheel. Went to mow recently and couldn't get it started seemed the starter was weak so I changed the battery still was super weak turning over. Changed the starter now it won't spin at all any ideas? cub cadet lt1046
When I got the mower from the store it started right up no problem I didn't have to choke it or anyting so I cut the grass about a week later time to cut the grass difficult to start when cold this is the second time I've had this problem this is a brand new riding mower if it does it again I'm going to have to call the shop I got it from you're talking over $2,500 here
Great video. I took my battery out and had it tested. It was good. My dumbass had the blade engaged. Your video jogged something in my brain. You saved me a ton of embarrassment.
I’ve got a Cub Cadet Kohler 7000 series, 22 hp, and can’t get it to start. It’s reading a message, “Lo” can’t make out the second word, maybe “Press?” It has good oil and gas in it. Any idea what I should try?
If you have an electric PTO and a dead battery, do not jump a dead battery and try to mow. The engine alternator can charge the battery or run the PTO but not both. You might fry your alternator coils.
@@DIYJIM Wow I never got such a quick response🤯😎I've got a GT 1554 that's a btch love it until steering rack wheel bushings drive belt mower blade bent I couldn't believe how thick and good steel the blades where. It's now running but solenoid needs jumping and wiring problem was hoping for a FUSE🤔😁 I could care less if the 1.5 acres get mowed my Wife that's another story🤪.
@@DIYJIM Well, it happens that I inherited a Cub Cadet that looks almost identical to that one. It wouldn't even turn over. I charged the battery and still nothing, so I was wondering if there was a safety switch somewhere that I was unaware of.
@@DIYJIM I don't know what I did wrong before, but I started it without having to jump it. I used the brake lock this time. That lock handle mechanism doesn't feel natural at all, but I'll get used to it.
Mine has been having issues when trying to start. When I turn the key, nothing happens. I have to make few tries before it will eventually start. Is this a spark plug issue? Thx
So what i am experiencing is when I turn the key over i hear a click noise but nothing now I left my battery out over the winter and the mower is covered but outside if it was the fuse would it still make a clicking sound or would I get nothing? Ty
man o man, my lawn is a jungle, I tried to start the mower, and Im sick. over memorial day weekend, so Im on the couch. and I keep looking at the front lawn. So I go to the garage, try to start the mower. wont. so I take the battery out, charge it, still wont turn on. so I give up - take a sick nap. wake up today still not 100% tell myself im going to have at it, start watching this video. 5 mins in, I realize what I did. I take the battery back out - charge it again, put it on correctly this time. smh. moral of the story - just be sick and dont be a lawn paladin.
You can pull that out and use a wire clamp and tighten it down and leave it to bypass that. But it is a safety issue making the mower run without being on the brakes so use caution!
@@SinlezzPanda or, I can bypass it to a push button on the dash. Pushing that would be like stepping on the brake. And everything would be safe. Just push the button to start the mower!
Is the battery connected tight? Maybe a bad battery. Maybe something was left on and drained half of the battery. Can you jump it with jumper cables off your car?
Is there a shut off system that may have gotten stuck when low oil ? I watched your video but nothing about the low oil warning. I ran out of gas so put new premium in and then mowed for half hour and then drove mower up and down driveway. When I got to back yard is when it stopped so I decided to check oil again and added some. Checked all of your twelve points.
@@DIYJIM ,Yes it does it when you turn it off and you turn the motor off after you get through mowing but right now is just do it it's just constantly popping popping popping
Every JD I've owned has broke down... numerous times. Heard all the "Ya, butch'ya shoulda done this" & "You're not keepin it well maintained"...Bull crap. Treated em better than my kids. Thousands put into them. Tried older, then newer...newer was worse. Thank God I was able to shove it back up the dealers @$$ & get my money back. Every lawn tractor brand has their design flaws or known problems. Knowing that going in, you're almost better off going with a cheaper make, & used. The thousands you save on the purchase gives you a nest egg for repairs. My excellent mechanic & personal friend said "They all break down...even with maintaining them..." I decided to go with a newly serviced used Cub Cadet SLTX 1054 VT. All new belts, battery, fuses, switches, filters, plugs. Tires have 3/4 of original tread. And it only has 377 hrs on it. Before you start rippin' me on my choice, add up all that stuff...now factor in great compression readings and it runs & operates perfectly ...for $475.00. And, with a 54" - 3 blade cutting deck, my double lot (about 1/3 acre & steep hilly sections) is done in minutes, not ours. Hard to beat that. So far, so good. Troll or harp all ya want. But if it breaks down, I have the savings and mechanic friend to fix it...who referred me the man selling it. He was moving to a Townhouse because he done with yardwork. With all that being said...even if it completely blows in a few years...I'm good with it. Just sayin sometimes cheap but well maintained is better than new$$$$$$$$$. Chuck it & get another one. Ya can do that about 6-7 times for the same money as what a new JD will run ya. If not...well when your JD is broken, again, you can borrow my POS...at least you'll have that cool hat to represent....CC's are USA made too...just saying. Are they top of the line? Nope, not even close. But for the money, once again...I'm good.
My 26 year old Deere fires every time, even in -10 weather, I can't figure out this cub cadet, changed to switch, seat switch, ignition, spark plugs, and magnetos, no start even with ether, no spark

My key does nothing. I checked the fuse and still no power. Any clues? Battery is charged. Good connections. It worked fine before I stored it.
What if you just bought it brought it home from the store brand new then it won't start and stay started? It starts but try to go anywhere and it dies
@rohihnbarroga4347 sounds like maybe a safety switch. For example, if the blades are engaged and you try to reverse, they're going to shut off.
@rohihnbarroga4347 also make sure the parking brake has disengaged (pressing the foot brake pedal and release and the parking brake should release)

Welcome
We have a 2007 model year Cub Cadet GT1554. Sometimes the tractor will not start and the PTO light is on but the PTO switch is off. If we wiggle wires to the PTO and pull the PTO switch on and off a few times, the light goes out and the mower starts. Do you think that the problem is the PTO pull switch is going bad or the actual power takeoff?
Sorry really not sure but I think I would try changing the PTO switch.
I just acquired a Cub Cadet LT1550 for free because it wouldn't start. It was missing a fuse and the cruise control switch had to be pushed downward to start. Good luck boys!
Thanks for watching
Thanks I found this very helpful 🙏🏼 God bless you too
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching
A have a mower just like this that came with the house my parents bought, we ran it till it stopped working so I'm trying to repair it again
Hope you get it fixed
There is a micro switch down by the tranny fan on my LTX1046 I can't figure out what it is. There is 2 wires going to it, a yellow and green. The yellow got pulled out due to someone not tying down the wires properly! My guess is it's some type of grounding switch because of the green wire. Doesn't show it in the official schematic! Must not be too important, the mower still runs and mows. Real curious what it would be? I'm a real stickler when comes to disconnected wires! Help? Thanks in advance!
Sorry I'm not sure, I would have to see it in person. You can put a video or picture on Facebook join one of the small engine groups.
You can't even get a rebuild kit on carburetor you have to order a new one and it takes a year or two to get it from China
Sounds about how everything is now a days. We are building back better lol
That’s a good idea, I’ll have to show that next time. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching
All good things to check but not a very efficient way to locate the problem. Best bet is to try and narrow it down before running all over the mower. If it doesn’t crank it is not the spark plugs, fuel quality or fuel filter. If it cranks do you have spark?

Great video presentation

I have the CC LT 1045 with the Kohler Courage 20. The battery is good, and I have a new starter. I can turn the engine by rotating the fan cover. The starter does engage the flywheel. Sometimes, it's as if there isn't enough torque to crank, and sometimes it just whines. Sometimes, if I'm lucky, it will start. Any solutions? Anyone? Thanks in advance.
Same exact problem man
I have a similar model but my battery is located under the steering wheel. Went to mow recently and couldn't get it started seemed the starter was weak so I changed the battery still was super weak turning over. Changed the starter now it won't spin at all any ideas? cub cadet lt1046
Sorry not sure I would have to see it. Hope you get it figured out. Maybe check starter solenoid out.
I ended up testing the solenoid and I guess it went bad during the process. Thanks for the reply 👍
When I got the mower from the store it started right up no problem I didn't have to choke it or anyting so I cut the grass about a week later time to cut the grass difficult to start when cold this is the second time I've had this problem this is a brand new riding mower if it does it again I'm going to have to call the shop I got it from you're talking over $2,500 here
Thanks for watching hope you get it figured out
Great video. I took my battery out and had it tested. It was good. My dumbass had the blade engaged. Your video jogged something in my brain. You saved me a ton of embarrassment.
Glad it helped
I’ve got a Cub Cadet Kohler 7000 series, 22 hp, and can’t get it to start. It’s reading a message, “Lo” can’t make out the second word, maybe “Press?” It has good oil and gas in it. Any idea what I should try?
Not sure I would check the manual. Sorry I can’t help
If you have an electric PTO and a dead battery, do not jump a dead battery and try to mow. The engine alternator can charge the battery or run the PTO but not both. You might fry your alternator coils.
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching
Thank you.
Welcome!
You should also add the solenoid to the check list.
Thanks, good idea but it is a little harder for some to check
Thank you.turned out my fuse was blown ,that's why it wasn't cranking
Glad I could help thanks for commenting
I get juice but No click or nothing from starter🤔
Hope you get it figured out. Maybe a lose wire
I don't have the battery UNDER THE SEAT it's under the Cowell and I don't see a fuse?
Sorry yours is different thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM Wow I never got such a quick response🤯😎I've got a GT 1554 that's a btch love it until steering rack wheel bushings drive belt mower blade bent I couldn't believe how thick and good steel the blades where. It's now running but solenoid needs jumping and wiring problem was hoping for a FUSE🤔😁 I could care less if the 1.5 acres get mowed my Wife that's another story🤪.
+ how do you like where/ how you get to the steering rack bolt head on top? Engineering Marvel🤣
Thank you.
Welcome
Did I miss something? If there's a safety switch that requires you to be in the seat, how can jump start the mower with the seat lifted?
Your correct I can’t believe your the first to notice that. You can start without being on the seat just have the brake applied. Thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM Well, it happens that I inherited a Cub Cadet that looks almost identical to that one. It wouldn't even turn over. I charged the battery and still nothing, so I was wondering if there was a safety switch somewhere that I was unaware of.
@@wfemp_4730 just make sure the break is Pushed in
@@DIYJIM I don't know what I did wrong before, but I started it without having to jump it. I used the brake lock this time. That lock handle mechanism doesn't feel natural at all, but I'll get used to it.
Thanks I will try these
Welcome
It could be the solenoid switch also if it doesn't start.
Thanks for the tip, thanks for watching
Mine has been having issues when trying to start. When I turn the key, nothing happens. I have to make few tries before it will eventually start. Is this a spark plug issue? Thx
Is this a support group for Cub Cadet? 8 I need one!
I like the two a hat have one just like it actually two
Thanks
So what i am experiencing is when I turn the key over i hear a click noise but nothing now I left my battery out over the winter and the mower is covered but outside if it was the fuse would it still make a clicking sound or would I get nothing? Ty
If it were the fuse, you would hear nothing
@@DIYJIM yep I figured it out not getting any power from my solenoid thanks for everything truly great video.
Thanks!
Welcome thanks for watching
man o man, my lawn is a jungle, I tried to start the mower, and Im sick. over memorial day weekend, so Im on the couch. and I keep looking at the front lawn.
Glad I could help thanks for leaving me a comment
Or to save. MOney use a wire. With rubr

Thanks for this handy video!
Your welcome
Fuse keeps blowing when I run my PtO
You did not maybe run something over and it is wrapped up around your blades?
I can't find the choke??
I show where the choke is at 4:52, hope this helps thanks for watching
@@DIYJIM mine doesn't have it there. Is there anywhere else it could be?? Or anywhere under the hood I could do it manually??
@@sotorc1448 check the linkage that connects to choke shaft on top of carburetor. Yours may operate choke when throttle is in fully opened position.
Some of us are short! Pushing that brake peddle is almost impossible. Why not show where that break switch is located and how to bypass it!?!
Sorry hope you figure it out.

Not Really!! Cub Cadet Fantastic Machine
Thanks for watching
Mine nearly will turn over
Maybe you need a new battery. Hope you get it figured out
@@DIYJIM the battery is new u can see the starter barely turning
Is the battery connected tight? Maybe a bad battery. Maybe something was left on and drained half of the battery. Can you jump it with jumper cables off your car?
Zero turn cub cadet low oil light on
Sounds like you need to add oil. Check the level of the oil. Hope you get it figured out
@@DIYJIM I put oil in but acts like a sensor is stopping it from working? It worked for about fifteen minutes and then stopped. Thanks for help!
@@pamzaugg5326 sorry I have never had that problem
Is there a shut off system that may have gotten stuck when low oil ? I watched your video but nothing about the low oil warning. I ran out of gas so put new premium in and then mowed for half hour and then drove mower up and down driveway. When I got to back yard is when it stopped so I decided to check oil again and added some. Checked all of your twelve points.
Could I send you a picture under seat. Sorry to bother you. My husband passed away and I know nothing about motors but so appreciate any advise
Why is it backfireing
Does it happen when you shut it off? If so maybe try slowing the engine down slowly then shut off. Hope this helps
@@DIYJIM ,Yes it does it when you turn it off and you turn the motor off after you get through mowing but right now is just do it it's just constantly popping popping popping
❤❤👌👌

Just because it shows 12 V don't mean the battery is good
I agree, thanks for watching
13aza1cn010 thats my model and im bout to trash it 3 yrs old and cranks no start stupid push button trash
Crazy they don’t make stuff like they used to. Thanks for watching sorry it didn’t help you
I’ve always found that if a cub cadet doesn’t start you should go and buy a John Deere. Problem solved.
I already have one. Hope your having a good weekend my friend. Maybe I’ll see you at church.
Simplicity is better than both.
God I’m just about there!
Your grammar is really bad.
