    Thomas Shelby exhibits one of my favorite traits to see in a character as well as one of the most powerful things I think you can see in other people which is that he is always reserved in his composure so when he raises his voice or becomes more aggressive or physical it’s terrifying. When you become so accustomed to someone being emotionally in control it’s even scarier to see them let go momentarily. In the case of Peaky Blinders it’s what imo makes Thomas way scarier than Arthur when he’s fighting someone.

    • @QuietlyMagnetic

      True. It’s expected from Arthur to act angrily but not from Thommy. So when he does act angrily or even raises his voice it’s unexpected so it has much more of an effect on the person he’s speaking to.

    You gotta remember. His job in WWI was that of a tunneler, IIRC. So being able to stay calm under who knows how much earth, digging away at it, having to be calm in that environment makes anything a man can do to him absolutely nothing.

      The only time he showed his vulnerability to someone who was not a family member was with Tatiana. She read him like a book and exposed his weaknesses. She pushed him out of his comfort zone of “non-reactivity”. Even when he talked to his wives ( Grace at the wedding about feeling scared ) and Lizzie ( after the Ballet recital they hosted in the presence of Mosely ) when he talked to his wives he still remained relatively calm and in control as if he had to do so as a protector of the family and show them
      That they are safe despite the dangers looming over their family . Tommy had been bottling everything up inside and Tatiana allowed Tommy to show a different side of himself ,be emotionally unguarded and be the one who should be comforted for a change . Despite his suicidal ideations he realized that he did in fact want to live , he shut down her unpredictability by being hyper reactive .

    Peaky Blinders is by far one of the best written shows i have seen in a long time. It's not only Thomas Shelby, the other characters also really well designed and interesting too. They have their traits, they have their limits and with the conditions their limits change.
    My favorite is actually Arthur. He is not as dumb as one might think, but his impulsivness and dreams hold him back. Also while he is not able to build a bigger picture like Tommy can, he gets what Tommy is after provided he has the information and does a lot of what needs to be done. I love the scenes where Arthur and Tommy help each other out.

    The one other time Tommy let his emotions run him was when his son was taken. The priest had already played mind games with Tommy by putting an obituary of his son under the kid's pillow. And Tommy knows what the priest did to Michael. He let it out on Alfie, who immediately brought Tommy back to his place of non-reactiveness, by saying it was part of the position they're in to face situations like that.

    For anyone who whats to try this.
    Instead of overthinking situation try to think in a way as "why are you doing this you know this will not end good for you" Take your time use silence to apply pressure and use that silence to think of an outcome that benefits you.

    Being calm under pressure is only built and chiseled by a person who underwent the same scenario over and over; learnt, developed & made changes to that situation. He/She realises that the pressure is not a big deal, because they witnessed, observed & realised from experience it wasn’t.

From a combat veterans perspective I can relate to Tommy feeling completely helpless and knowing death is a foot away, I disarmed IED's. Once you've been in that position you have two options, cave to depression and wallow in it until you die OR you fight to insure you're never going to be in that position of helplessness again, at all costs.

    • @QuietlyMagnetic
      @QuietlyMagnetic  3 роки тому

      Good observation and yes you don’t want to try and emulate a fictional character without acknowledging that they are scripted and real life is very different. That being said, there are always valuable lessons that can be learned and applied to more realistic scenarios. Clearly want to take the positive and try and leave behind the negative.

  • @Aldrnarii
    @Aldrnarii 3 роки тому +16

    It is worth noting that whilst being able to keep ones cool and maintain a relaxed state is incredibly useful, the reason Tommy can do so isn't desirable or admirable.
    and whilst the show may operate under the idea of 'Predators and Prey', the real world most certainly does not and emotive reactions are sometimes warranted and the correct thing to do!

    • @QuietlyMagnetic
      @QuietlyMagnetic  3 роки тому +6

      Really good points. Tommy is the way he is for a number of reasons as explored in the video, some of those certainly you don’t want to emulate such as his PTSD and mental health. However, there are other more positive reasons he’s able to keep his cool such as his intelligence, foresight and and entrepreneurial mindset etc. Also as society evolves so does the concept of predator and prey. Whilst this may no longer be driven by violence and survival, I think we still certainly live in a world where some people if they can, whether in business, at work, school or other domains, will subjugate those in one form or another. Emotional control is one form of power which you can acquire without money, influence or politics etc as it’s form within. But yes agreed, we don’t live in the same type of world Tommy lives in and it’s healthy to show emotions to those that care about you. Thanks for watching!

    •  2 роки тому

      I’d like to agree, however being privy to deep politics and international governments / ministers / PM’s etc. it’s actually surprisingly accurate. There’s a good side and a bad side. Hence I remain a centrist. “Taking care of people” who have done wrong, or the deep thought and chess like games tommy plays; this is so factual I cannot completely agree with your comment.
      And that’s okay, I just want this to be said because many are not privy / aware of how truly*** corrupt the world is.
      Tommy embodies the politico ‘grind’ so effortlessly and accurately, that it’s occasionally brought up with a friend of mine in a certain countries’ political sector for example. Quite fascinating nonetheless; however Regardless of it being a show, I concur the accuracy that it depicts. Very deeply.

      @ You see, I'd see a lot of centrism as closer to a negative force.
      I'm privy to politics too, if you wish to word it like that I guess, and what one person considers bad or corrupt another does not.
      There's absolutely a lot of corruption in the world but there is also a massive grey area for what can be considered correct or what might fix said issues. Ignoring that ignored perspective.
      I wish things were so simple as to be good vs bad or predator vs prey.
