Thomas Shelby exhibits one of my favorite traits to see in a character as well as one of the most powerful things I think you can see in other people which is that he is always reserved in his composure so when he raises his voice or becomes more aggressive or physical it’s terrifying. When you become so accustomed to someone being emotionally in control it’s even scarier to see them let go momentarily. In the case of Peaky Blinders it’s what imo makes Thomas way scarier than Arthur when he’s fighting someone.
Great insight and agree entirely. When a man like Tommy loses his cool or is acting out of the norm, you know something massive is up and it can be worrying!
True. It’s expected from Arthur to act angrily but not from Thommy. So when he does act angrily or even raises his voice it’s unexpected so it has much more of an effect on the person he’s speaking to.
Yeah. My brother in law is so quiet and seemingly in control that when he was aggressive towards person messing with family they said it was quite affective communicating his dislike for the other person.
You gotta remember. His job in WWI was that of a tunneler, IIRC. So being able to stay calm under who knows how much earth, digging away at it, having to be calm in that environment makes anything a man can do to him absolutely nothing.
@@QuietlyMagnetic I think another part of it is the "Bleak midwinter" thing. He considers himself (pre-war Tommy) to be dead in france. The person he is after the war is not Thomas Shelby, but just some dead man walking, using the extra time he was given to do whatever the fuck he wants. And you can't scare a dead man.
My father always told me when someone is trying to get a raise our of you the worst thing you can do give them ammo by getting upset and reacting. You are in control. Don't let anyone ever try and manipulate you
Brilliant analysis, the Shelby family is one of my favourite families on TV. You’re totally right Tommy is such a complicated man (and dreamy!) yet unless you’re his family you never see it, as he’s always calm and collected.
The only time he showed his vulnerability to someone who was not a family member was with Tatiana. She read him like a book and exposed his weaknesses. She pushed him out of his comfort zone of “non-reactivity”. Even when he talked to his wives ( Grace at the wedding about feeling scared ) and Lizzie ( after the Ballet recital they hosted in the presence of Mosely ) when he talked to his wives he still remained relatively calm and in control as if he had to do so as a protector of the family and show them That they are safe despite the dangers looming over their family . Tommy had been bottling everything up inside and Tatiana allowed Tommy to show a different side of himself ,be emotionally unguarded and be the one who should be comforted for a change . Despite his suicidal ideations he realized that he did in fact want to live , he shut down her unpredictability by being hyper reactive .
His stillness always makes me feel like he’s in control so in the show I always feel like he’ll come out of any situation on top. Except for the ending of season 2

Everything in this video is 100% accurate. But it's easy to forget that this type of behaviour is counterproductive in most situations where it's more beneficial to work together. Its great for dealing with aggressive people though and making a strong point that is unpopular.
There is something to be said about the responding at your own pace. Formulating a response before speaking and taking in everything the person is saying to you. It’s something I notice Jordan Person does when people debate him.

For anyone who whats to try this. Instead of overthinking situation try to think in a way as "why are you doing this you know this will not end good for you" Take your time use silence to apply pressure and use that silence to think of an outcome that benefits you.
Okay I know I am late asf but I am on season 2 ..how did I miss this awesome show I have no idea but Cillian Murphy in this show is *chefs kiss*. I also notice that he doesn't blink much especially in tense situations.
Being calm under pressure is only built and chiseled by a person who underwent the same scenario over and over; learnt, developed & made changes to that situation. He/She realises that the pressure is not a big deal, because they witnessed, observed & realised from experience it wasn’t.
Interesting point. I’d add that even if the consequences were significant the individual has learnt to understand that not staying calm and panicking doesn’t help whatsoever and can make things worse.
Thanks appreciate the kind words! Yes, he’s definitely on the list! He’s a great example of coming across aloof and indifferent. @@QuietlyMagnetic I think the show has multiple meanings for different audiences. From a combat veterans perspective I can relate to Tommy feeling completely helpless and knowing death is a foot away, I disarmed IED's. wow, that's impressive and terrifying. I'm sure your experiences of disarming IEDs can only be felt by those who have been in such similar life or death situations. Thanks really appreciate the kind words! Wish I had the time and the videos got the necessary views to allow me to do more but sadly some of the videos go unwatched! Great suggestions though!
I’ve not watched the video but I can tell you that you have make huge sacrifices to become like this. From the outside it might seem very cool an desirable, but when you’re that way it’s a huge burden. So be careful what you wish for
Good observation and yes you don’t want to try and emulate a fictional character without acknowledging that they are scripted and real life is very different. That being said, there are always valuable lessons that can be learned and applied to more realistic scenarios. Clearly want to take the positive and try and leave behind the negative.
It is worth noting that whilst being able to keep ones cool and maintain a relaxed state is incredibly useful, the reason Tommy can do so isn't desirable or admirable. and whilst the show may operate under the idea of 'Predators and Prey', the real world most certainly does not and emotive reactions are sometimes warranted and the correct thing to do!
Really good points. Tommy is the way he is for a number of reasons as explored in the video, some of those certainly you don’t want to emulate such as his PTSD and mental health. However, there are other more positive reasons he’s able to keep his cool such as his intelligence, foresight and and entrepreneurial mindset etc. Also as society evolves so does the concept of predator and prey. Whilst this may no longer be driven by violence and survival, I think we still certainly live in a world where some people if they can, whether in business, at work, school or other domains, will subjugate those in one form or another. Emotional control is one form of power which you can acquire without money, influence or politics etc as it’s form within. But yes agreed, we don’t live in the same type of world Tommy lives in and it’s healthy to show emotions to those that care about you. Thanks for watching!

I’d like to agree, however being privy to deep politics and international governments / ministers / PM’s etc. it’s actually surprisingly accurate. There’s a good side and a bad side. Hence I remain a centrist. “Taking care of people” who have done wrong, or the deep thought and chess like games tommy plays; this is so factual I cannot completely agree with your comment. And that’s okay, I just want this to be said because many are not privy / aware of how truly*** corrupt the world is. Tommy embodies the politico ‘grind’ so effortlessly and accurately, that it’s occasionally brought up with a friend of mine in a certain countries’ political sector for example. Quite fascinating nonetheless; however Regardless of it being a show, I concur the accuracy that it depicts. Very deeply.
@ You see, I'd see a lot of centrism as closer to a negative force. I'm privy to politics too, if you wish to word it like that I guess, and what one person considers bad or corrupt another does not. There's absolutely a lot of corruption in the world but there is also a massive grey area for what can be considered correct or what might fix said issues. Ignoring that ignored perspective. I wish things were so simple as to be good vs bad or predator vs prey.

Tommy is a very interesting character, a character that possesses many serpent-like, cold-blooded qualities. He's like a more nihilist version of a character like Little Finger
Interesting observation. I would add that he is also a family man and isn’t entirely driven by his own needs unlike Little Finger. Whether it’s his family or some other cause. His desire to stop Oswald and rise of fascism is an excellent example of something beyond himself and his own needs.
One thing I notice a lot about tommy and his family is their retort to people who offer them favors. Their response is always "in return for what?". Because they know nothing in this world is free, and people always have an agenda

100% not for romantic relationships!
Actually it is for romantic relationships….be like Tommy 70% of the time would help your relationship
Staying still when danger is approaching is a skill both learned and has to be practiced. It does make people mad though.
Very true!
Everything in this video is 100% accurate. But it's easy to forget that this type of behaviour is counterproductive in most situations where it's more beneficial to work together. Its great for dealing with aggressive people though and making a strong point that is unpopular.
Thanks and yes 100% agree!
Stilness and Silence. Remaim Calm and logical. Stay on your purpose
Simple words but very powerful
Tommy is a real poet
And he doesn’t know it!
A most impressive and inspiring synopsis. Bravo, friend.
Thanks for the kind words, very motivating!
There is something to be said about the responding at your own pace. Formulating a response before speaking and taking in everything the person is saying to you. It’s something I notice Jordan Person does when people debate him.
Great point, thanks for sharing
I'm so reserved in composure when in a heated room and everyone is going off in a meeting.. and often they can't even think of what to do.. I've had a few people just wig out it's a interesting way to live life..
Great trait
Thomas Shelby may give the illusion of apathy, but he is truly a stoic.
Great observation!
I have been waiting for a new video to drop I absolutely love your videos, Tommy Shelby is one of my favourite characters and Peaky Blinders is one of my favourite show, Tommy is truly a unique person even tho he’s scared he keeps smiling and he can do anything by himself and not be scared witch I like about him. Even tho he is a character he inspires me every day about not caring about what others think and don’t show his emotions to anyone. I loved this video and can’t wait for the next one to be published!
Thanks for the support from day one. Yep, he’s truly a complex man that provides an interesting example in dealing with fear
The background music though - PERFECT!
Thanks appreciate the kind words. Glad all those hours on the music was worth it!
For anyone who whats to try this.
Instead of overthinking situation try to think in a way as "why are you doing this you know this will not end good for you" Take your time use silence to apply pressure and use that silence to think of an outcome that benefits you.
Great advice!
Okay I know I am late asf but I am on season 2 ..how did I miss this awesome show I have no idea but Cillian Murphy in this show is *chefs kiss*. I also notice that he doesn't blink much especially in tense situations.
Better late than never. You're in for a world of high quality entertainment!
5:20 the delivery is perfection
Agreed, epic scene of conviction!
@@QuietlyMagnetic correct summation
Thoroughly enjoy each video you post! Have you thought of covering the Driver and his silence? I've noticed you have used a few shots from the movie.
Thanks appreciate the kind words! Yes, he’s definitely on the list! He’s a great example of coming across aloof and indifferent. I’m trying to cover as many different attributes first before I come back and revisit similar traits i.e. silence etc. Thanks for the suggestion. Yep have used a few shots as love the cinematography.
The best real life example of this is Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Non- reactivate... All the time. Dominant and intimidating all the time.
Is this the Indian cricketer or a different man?
@@QuietlyMagnetic Yes he is
Will check him out. Thanks for watching!
I really do beleive uploading such pieces of creativity and sense will make you reach 100k very soon
Thanks, I wish that were the case but views are low!
I strongly enjoyed peaky blinders! I loved the cast as well!
One of the rare inimitable shows!
Beautifully narration there fella. Well done. 👍
Thanks appreciate the kind feedback!
Your videos are great! I love watching them. Each and every video is unique and really teaches you lots of things.
Keep it up. Look forward to more interesting video.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
no reactivity is only applicable when put in threatening situations, i imagine most normal people aren’t being held at gunpoint and being calm. humans are hardwired. tommy is a character.
Interesting point. Although I can think of plenty of day to day interactions at work, in business and socially where non reactivity can be helpful.
Masterpiece, from narration to script writing to the smallest details and to the choice of background music, all were done so perfectly, amazing man, keep it up.
Just one thing though, can you give me the list of all background music used, they set the mood brilliantly for some thinking and planning.
And you are still replying and hearting everyone's comment, quite the dedication, hope your channel blow up one day, deserves it.
Thanks for your very kind words, appreciate it and gives me the fuel to continue working on my next video. I’ll dig out the list of all music used and post it here this weekend. Thanks for the support!
List of tracks in order of first played:
1) Nerves of Steel by Dream Cave
2) The Thin Line by Hampus Naeselius
3) The Sound of My Heart Breaky by Maybe
4) Destiny Rising by Formant X
5) The Escape Plan Activated by Grant Newman
@@QuietlyMagnetic Thank you very much.
Tommy was born this way. The tunnel incident was what triggered him to become Mr. Thomas Shelby.
Interesting thought. It would be great if the show did proper flashbacks to before Tommy joining the war to show what he was like.
@@QuietlyMagnetic I think the show has multiple meanings for different audiences. From a combat veterans perspective I can relate to Tommy feeling completely helpless and knowing death is a foot away, I disarmed IED's. Once you've been in that position you have two options, cave to depression and wallow in it until you die OR you fight to insure you're never going to be in that position of helplessness again, at all costs.
wow, that's impressive and terrifying. I'm sure your experiences of disarming IEDs can only be felt by those who have been in such similar life or death situations. I can only imagine the level of fight within the spirit required to not let the natural flight tendencies take over. Thanks for sharing your insight based on experience.
Yo… thanks for making this video bro. I REALLY appreciated it. I absolutely love CM’s portrayal of this phenomenal character. I love this show. Good stuff. I hope to see more character videos like this from you.
Thanks for the feedback and support, really glad you enjoyed it! Working only my next video at the moment, hoping to publish it in the next few weeks!
I love shellz so much. He's the man
THE man!
Great observations and verbal content! Thoroughly enjoyed!
Thanks for the kind feedback appreciate it!
Soooo glad to see this breakdown! I love Cillian Murphy and Tommy Shelby. Great video and music!
Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the music, I put a lot of thought into it!
Author is great, this channel would be on the top soon.
Thanks appreciate the kind words and support!
You helped me (through this video) with my over reacting habit which has got me into being considered immature and incompetent,I have got into problematic situations which could easily been avoided but for my over reacting habit. But why are not making videos anymore, you are definitely one of the best when it comes to making such videos💯💯💯💯,there is no doubt in that. Please make more.
I will be waiting.
Thanks for your kind words, appreciate it. I'm glad that my videos have helped you! Good news, I'm finalising my next video and it will be published in the next few days, after working on it for weeks! Keep any eye out.
@@QuietlyMagnetic Already subscribed and hit the bell 🔔. I am so happy that you responded. Thank you. One more question .will you respond on instagram??
Thanks! I don't use Instagram much, still need to build it up. But if I'm messaged on there, I do respond.
The title seems like one of those self-help manosphere things, but the video itself is actually one of those art analysis character-deconstruction videos, and that's cool. Interesting video.
Thanks for the feedback appreciate it! Yep, agreed, sadly it appears people click more if it comes across as self-help rather than analysis!
Great essay! Well summarized!
Thanks appreciate it!
Great video, well edited, seems to be meticulously articulated!
Well done!
Thanks for the great feedback, really appreciate it!
Dude your videos are so well-written. You have a real talent for describing people's otherwise indescribable qualities. Please do one on James Bond and Neal Caffrey. And Roger Federer, if you can.
Thanks really appreciate the kind words! Wish I had the time and the videos got the necessary views to allow me to do more but sadly some of the videos go unwatched! Great suggestions though!
I love the peaky fookin blinders especially tommy 🔥🔥
By order of the Peaky Blinders!
Like Polly said: "Tommy is different" tommy is a very complicated man.
Yep, Polly really understood Tommy and knew when something was up!
Great analysis!
Thank you!
I like when the last season he wasn't drinking. And they kept trying to punk him into drinking. He stood his ground and never took a sip
When he commits he sees it’s through till the end!
The real world certainly does operate under the predators or preys wtf
@ You see, I'd see a lot of centrism as closer to a negative force.
I'm privy to politics too, if you wish to word it like that I guess, and what one person considers bad or corrupt another does not.
There's absolutely a lot of corruption in the world but there is also a massive grey area for what can be considered correct or what might fix said issues. Ignoring that ignored perspective.
I wish things were so simple as to be good vs bad or predator vs prey.
@@haydenbonat1042 In some select cases, sure, the majority of the time however that is just a gross simplification.
masterful analysis, thank you

what a cast indeed

film
He is chosen!
Brilliant analysis. New subscriber
Thanks for the support!
@@QuietlyMagnetic very true! They definitely have differing motivations and Tommy is nowhere near as narcissistic as little finger
I am scares, and I am constantly moving on now we are friends, my road and my fair❤❤
Stay strong and stay humble
I love hearing about this from a West Midlands perspective.
Not only West Midlands but from the very heart of where Tommy Shelby lived!
WOW. Now I'm gonna watch it again!!!
Haha Tommy is a rewatchable character!
Best actor ever. Just love em to pieces ❤️🥰
He is a remarkable actor for sure!
If you aren't afraid of death, life suddenly becomes bearable.
Wise insight
Everyone should be thoughtful on where they are going after they die.
Tommy’s EQ was ahead of his time
He was a very complex man yet managed at least on the outside to make it look simple.
this is trully a well built up charachter
Definitely multiple layers of complexity to the character
and well acted
@@sushanthme7271 yep, Cillian Murphy smashed it

One thing I notice a lot about tommy and his family is their retort to people who offer them favors. Their response is always "in return for what?". Because they know nothing in this world is free, and people always have an agenda
Yep, they know exactly how to leverage favours and transact
Amazing video, such important lessons for us young lads, thank you for the amazing content and keep it up!

In India we have a great man in cricket , his name is MS DHONI , the greatest captain the country has, the genius mastermind who never breaks under pressure and has won our country all cups in all format. We fondly call him captain cool
Thanks for sharing, some others have also mentioned him before. Glad to hear of real life examples!
ms dhoni ... ( NOT MS DHONI ) was an UTTER FAILURE in the highest form of Cricket ... TEST CRICKET ... which, as the name suggests ... is a true TEST of CHARACTER, COMPETENCE and CALIBRE. dhoni FAILED MISERABLY in Test Cricket so much that he ran away from it with his tail between his legs ... and quit TEST CRICKET... way before he even considered quitting other low-brow forms of mass entertainment. ms dhoni was NO THOMAS SHELBY by any stretch of imagination!!!
