Ok for all the dudes out there who are trifling over another dude knitting and crocheting blankets, here's a little history for you. Knitting and crocheting were actually started by men who were fisherman. They had to repair their nets. This continued through the generation and women picked up on it to make clothing and blankets for their families. The fisherman worked also in the winter months. So they had to have warm things. Some didn't have wives and women to do these things for. So they branched out their skills to provide for themselves. Knitting and crocheting are being taught to soldiers suffering from PTSD, male and female alike. It calms the thoughts, focuses the attention on something real and tangible instead of memories and flashbacks. Its taught to prisoners (men and women) to help give them some creative outlet. It works. There is a combat veteran who has his own UA-cam channel for crocheting. He suffers from PTSD and he wanted to share his skill with other veterans to help them. Until you suffer from this stuff, you don't know what its like. Its agony. I suffer from it, too. And about the young man who said we need to try it, he's showing passion for something he learned. He wants to share his passion for it. Thats a good thing! You need to do this.😉😁

In a mad moment, I decided to order the wool for this to make it for my friend's birthday... The wool arrived two days before the birthday, and I was working both days (I have no prior knitting experience!)... The race was on!
Two 2 1/2 hour sessions later, following your video with care, and it was finished in time!

What store did you purchase this yarn? I've gone to Target, Michael's and Jo-Ann's. Target never carried yarn , Michael's discontinued this yarn 6 months ago and Jo-Ann's stopped years ago. I am at a lose. I don't want to purchase sight unseen from Amazon and have to send it back. Any other ideas?

@@ritaholston6793 I’m really surprised that you’re having difficulty finding this yarn. I bought more just last week at Michaels to make another blanket for UA-cam. I also easily found it online (Michaels) .
Maybe it’s going by a different name ?
I’m also seeing a similar yarn at Walmart lately. The only thing ,though, is it looks like they are not providing much yarn in the ball so it might come out more pricey.
There is a company called BeCozi that makes this polyester yarn . That might be an option. They do tutorials here on UA-cam .
Please check the link in the description box below my video here see if you still have issues ordering from Michaels. Bernat Blanket Big.

I went to my aunts house for the weekend and someone had made a hand-knitted blanket for my little cousin. The woman who made it had dementia and was battling cancer, but the thing that she liked to do to keep her mind going, was to crochet and knit. I’ve skimmed through probably 2 dozen videos, because my brain just did NOT understand what they were doing, even though they were all for “beginners.” I don’t understand the terminology, why they’re using certain tools, etc. Thankfully, I actually understand this one! 🙌🏼 I’ve never crocheted before, so for doing multiple colors, is it basically the same concept for adding another skein? Just tie on, trim & go? Thanks! This video is super helpful. 💜

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  3 роки тому +83

I’m so happy you found the video useful! Yes , you can absolutely tie on your next color when you run out of the first but only if you want the color to start right after the previous color, no matter where on the blanket that happens.
But if you want the color change to be more solid (like a definite stripe of color all the way across, you’ll want to make sure to attach your new skein right before you start a new row of loops.
      Hope that makes sense. 💕

I’m so happy you found it helpful. Hm - regarding the size of a blanket for your amount of yarn ... that’s a toughie. I’m terrible with math.
The Bernat yarn was a size 7 with 32 yards in each.
I had to do some trial and error to figure out how much I needed.
I would recommend you do the same. I would take one skein and start a chain to the width you think you want your blanket to be. I literally made the chain , and placed it across my body to make sure it was covering me well.
Then , start making your blanket with the one skein and measure how far it went.
      12, 36, 48 inches?
Whatever that number is you can figure out how many more skeins it would need to get to the length you want.
It’s a bit time consuming of course but it’s really the best way to see what you need.
I was making blankets for different family members - some tall , some petite , I even made one as a couple snuggle blanket.
I did this test to do my best to size it to them.
      Hope this helps 💕

@@PlayHookywithMe how big was your couple snuggle blanket? Do you remember how many skeins it took? Thank you

@@sydneydowning4476 oh boy , I think I used 7 for that one , Sydney. But you can get away with 6 . Just won’t be as long. Focus on the width first - drape a chain across your body (across hips) to get an idea of how wide you need it to be for 2 people . It’s much easier to add to the length rather than having to start over with the width.

How did you figure out how many rows to do for the 3 x 4 size and how many do you need for the 3 x 5 or the 4 x 5? I can’t remember what you said I’m sorry? 6:23

I am a knitter since the 80s. I have made scads of dishcloths, scarves and too many afghans to count. That being said, I was looking for a blanket or afghan pattern that was easy to complete in a timely manner. This Finger Knit Blanket did the trick ! Now I can have an afghan on my needles and still complete another blanket without tools (other than the needle and thread you use for sewing in the end) ! Thank You So Much for this video !
One Suggestion: Please give # of skeins of chunky yarn needed for larger size blankets, as I usually do blankets in 6 or 8 feet sizes.

I bought yarn two years ago before my second granddaughter was born and wanted to make two of these for my then almost 2 year old granddaughter and her sister to be born in February. I never got them started. Thank you for the inspiring and helpful video.

I've seen other tutorials, and while they're fine - yours is utterly perfect! You explain the general concept, give tips for adding skeins and maintaining the blanket, and it's concise enough for me to understand and follow. Thank you so much!
