Good observation! I may have mis-stated. We used Gypsum board for the ceiling, and standard concrete block (din bok) for the walls, with a special heat shield cooling paint for the exterior and interior. The drywall I mentioned was used for the ceiling.
Size of land is about 1.5 hectares. Prices for land now are all over…depends on location, proximity to utilities/roads, etc… We have a well for water, and electricity is run from the nearest main road.

I’m not an expert in real estate, but I think there are provisions for “owning” condos under long term leases that are granted. As far as I know, Private land ownership is not allowed for foreigners…needs to be registered under a Lao citizen’s name.
Mosquitos can be a nuisance at dawn and dusk, but I’ve been in areas of the States that seem far worse. Lots of tree frogs, red-headed lizards, geckos. Have seen the occasional tree snake in the bamboo. We did have an encounter with a cobra recently that was startling…but I don’t expect we’ll see one again. We came across a centipede one evening in a neighboring village. Oh, and flying termites closer to rainy season are pretty weird!
I’ve just qualified for federal employee minimum retirement age this year, my second retirement, I’m already retired from the US Army back in 2005. Now I just have to convince my wife that it’s ok for us to move back to Laos!

There are paths for all budgets…ours was on the lower end, but took tons of time buying our own materials and managing the build!
