How to find affordable rentals homes or even wanting to purchase in Laos? DO NOT SEARCH ONLINE! Many do and are confronted with extremely high prices compared to what the landlord or seller is wanting. Your best bet is driving around the area you're interested in and looking for phone numbers on fences/properties. It is the way most Lao rent homes or sell land. Very few use brokers. Another way to search for rentals is to join some Laos expat pages and ask there. Many Lao watch these pages for foreigners wanting accommodation. Remember.. the first price is always a starting point. Negotiate!
I think that Savannaket would be a good place for a westerner to live. There is a Thai immigration office where you can get Thai visas (5,000 baht for a 6-month multi-entry visa). Your rental price is very reasonable and it would cost a lot more in Vientiane.
Living in Laos is so affordable but it’s Freddy that inside the city it’s the same price as Bangkok…it’s ridiculous when you think about it. We currently are renovating a house in Vientiane and it cost 2k to do about 12k worth of work. Our neighbors built on their land a whole new house for $20k. Hopefully our channel can inspire people to go back home and live/build
