I'm going to build an American style house. 4 bedrooms. 2 bathrooms. 2 car garage. It will be a homestead with solar panels. Fruit orchard. Chickens. Veggie gardens.
I'm going to buy property in Laos. By the time my retirement in 2042, my house is ready to move in. I could raise chickens. Eat from my banana trees. Mangos, avocados trees. Build a swimming pool.
I came across your channel. Are you guys from USA? In Laos, they build houses with din chi or din bok. I heard you mentioning drywall like the US. Did you build yours with drywall?
Good observation! I may have mis-stated. We used Gypsum board for the ceiling, and standard concrete block (din bok) for the walls, with a special heat shield cooling paint for the exterior and interior. The drywall I mentioned was used for the ceiling.
I’ve just qualified for federal employee minimum retirement age this year, my second retirement, I’m already retired from the US Army back in 2005. Now I just have to convince my wife that it’s ok for us to move back to Laos!
@@retire_recharge_roam We’re planning to visit this October, it’s going to be our second visit since we left Laos. As for above comments, wife and I had discussed about moving back to Laos when we retire but she seems not convincing yet.
Finding a reliable builder can be a challenge in Laos, depending on what standard you’re building. For our farm house, we did the design and bought the materials ourselves, then found some locals in the village to build. Lots of trial and error. I’d recommend reaching out to a Facebook group to see if you get some offers. Size of land is about 1.5 hectares. Prices for land now are all over…depends on location, proximity to utilities/roads, etc… We have a well for water, and electricity is run from the nearest main road.
Mosquitos can be a nuisance at dawn and dusk, but I’ve been in areas of the States that seem far worse. Lots of tree frogs, red-headed lizards, geckos. Have seen the occasional tree snake in the bamboo. We did have an encounter with a cobra recently that was startling…but I don’t expect we’ll see one again. We came across a centipede one evening in a neighboring village. Oh, and flying termites closer to rainy season are pretty weird!
Size of land is about 1.5 hectares, and original asking price ~10 years ago was about $35K USD. Prices for land now are all over…depends on location, proximity to utilities/roads, etc…

I’m not an expert in real estate, but I think there are provisions for “owning” condos under long term leases that are granted. As far as I know, Private land ownership is not allowed for foreigners…needs to be registered under a Lao citizen’s name.
Wow. Thank you for sharing your costs and experience. That is definitely an option to consider for the future.
Coming from the West, it was an interesting experience!
Nice work, I love the layout of the property. Enjoy life and be happy.
Thank you! Every day we wake up is a blessing!

Amazingly cheap build! The complex is pretty much self-sufficient and sustainable!
Good luck in retirement!

Sounds like you’re setting yourself up well! Good luck, and depending on the time of year and places you visit it may not be hard!

I heard rumors that Foreigners can’t buy land and properties in Laos. Please advise..
I’m not an expert in real estate, but I think there are provisions for “owning” condos under long term leases that are granted. As far as I know, Private land ownership is not allowed for foreigners…needs to be registered under a Lao citizen’s name.
Is the property under your name?
No I don’t own property in my name, since I’m not a Lao citizen.
That's what I've been told. That's a tough one. Hopefully not as difficult than Thailand.
Wow, that's hella cheap
There are paths for all budgets…ours was on the lower end, but took tons of time buying our own materials and managing the build!
One thing is Missing it's a pool bc Laos constantly 🔥🔥🔥🔥 pool would be awesome
You are right. This time of the year it is very warm!
