    Generation Ship. Also a BIG thanks for putting in what you're pressing. Sometimes my biggest hang ups in Blender is getting stuck on what seems like a very simple thing of just translating/rotating/scaling an object, or like just trying to recenter to geometry.

    Hard Surface Modelling: Instead of ALT+D, you can mirror on all axes., Instead of Shift+D, I'd use a circular array.
    I'd also remove all the unneeded edge loops and the hidden faces.

    Hello my friend. I've been a c4d user for about 25 years. I am an academic at the university. I teach 3D modeling to my students. Blender has always seemed complicated to me. The sculpt feature of C4D was insufficient. First of all, I started learning ZBrush and Blender to learn how to sculpt (After the age of 60). As I started learning Blender, I started to love it. I really liked your space station/ship. It's a very instructive video and it's nice that you shared the original blender file. So I can learn better. thank you so much.

      Hi there thanks for watching and enjoying my work! Wow that's a lot of experience you have. I actually started with C4d back in version 6 or 7 when I was around 12! But I'm a Blender fanboy as you can see. Check out my other videos too.

      @@DanielGrovePhoto I also started with version 6. I am using version 21 and 23 now. For version 24 and 25, my computer's video card is insufficient. But the interface of version 25 is a bit like Blender. I started watching your other videos as well. very nice and simply conveying the basics. You are a good teacher. I was also interested in photography for a while. I set up a photography studio at the two universities I work at. In 1996, I established the first computer aided graphic design classroom among education faculties in Turkey. I've been using it since Photoshop 1.01. But since I focus on 3d, I don't care much about photoshop.

    FYI: Just finished the rendering of your spaceship file using a 3090/3090Ti combo. It took about 155 minutes for 1600 frames. The GPUs were undervolted so I can safely use a 1000W PS. The air cooled 3090 ran at .875V/1455Mhz yielding thermals (memory being hottest temp of card)/wattage at no higher than 76c/218W. The hybrid 3090Ti ran at .925V/1965Mhz yielding thermals/wattage no higher than 72c/288W. Ambient temps where 77F. PS never went higher than around 600W. The only thing I changed in render settings was to set up fast GI. I am not even using that fast RAM (2666Mhz) and my i7-7980xe is running stock. But I ran it on my C drive that uses an old but fast 960 EVO M.2 nvme drive. Oh and my motherboard is the old x299 strix from asus with 2 times x16 PCI-3 slots (not x8).

    • @DanielGrovePhoto

      To upscale it I enlarged the canvas and then traced over the original texture using shapes. I used guides in photoshop to keep them all aligned (snap to guides). I used soft brushes to add some shading and variation. I saved that and a version with just the black lines. In Blender I used those two images for color, roughness, and bump node plugged in to normals input (the lines only image). Use color ramp to control roughness or add contrast for color input. Check out my pdr shaders video for more help.

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  4 роки тому +4

      Those are the words I love to hear! I'm kicking myself I didn't focus on the engines and flame more. It's simple - use a gradient node to make a cylinder go from white on one end to black on the other. Use mapping or UV to get it going the right direction. Then mix that gradient with a musgrave noise for the flame texture. Then use that as the alpha for an emissions material so that the flame falls off to transparent as the gradient gets darker at the end. Use ramp node to tweak the falloff of the gradient and try the different gradient modes. To animated it simply animate the mapping node so the flames go "out" and you can animate the W parameter of the musgrave to get more dynamics within the flames.

    Great breakdown of some truly amazing, MASSIVE art. You just gained a subscriber. Since you mention things that crashed Blender during your workflow, as well as your render times, it begs the question. What does your system look like? In looking through your vids I see some content on photography equipment. I'd love to see a breakdown of your workstation to see what you're doing this amazing work on.

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому +1

      Well at the time of this video it was an Acer Predator Helios 300 laptop with a GTX 1060, 16GB ram and i7 I think. But I scored a big wedding last fall and used half of it to invest in a high end gaming pc I had built for me by a local that does that as a hobby. Now I have a RTX 2080 overclocked, 32 gb ram, Ryzen 3800, m.2 for cache, ssd for OS and programs, and a high rpm hdd for content. I found an Asus Pro Art display for just under 200 that's really good too thankfully cause color accurate screens get expensive real quick.
      For animation renders I let go overnight. I also picked 4 of my most complex Blend files (this one included) and rendered them on my old laptop and wrote down the times. Then i rendered the same exact files, frames, and settings on my pc and the times for 4-10 times faster!
      And thanks so much for enjoying my stuff! I am a photographer primarily that's doing video work as well now. And I use Blender to enhance my photo composites as well as a fun nerdy hobby that's getting me some 3d design jobs here and there.

      @@DanielGrovePhoto man I’ve been doing some hard surface modeling courses and built a pretty simple skyscraper (on the scale of Sears Tower relatively) and its 1.9 million verts made my relatively powerful computer sweat a little and get a bit bogged down. Now I’m wondering what you do to deal with these issues when you’re building things of this scale and complexity.

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому +1

      @@DerCribben One trick I do is to keep higher poly pieces which are usually smaller addons like greebles in a separate collection and turn the little monitor icon off for that collection which means it will still render but isn't visible or being calculated in the viewport. I think I read that just turning off visibility with the eyeball icon still menas it's being calculated. Also I try to use strategic modeling in places that count so I'm getting an illusion of complexity without adding too many polys. Also try to use textures to carry the weight of detail and micro detail in your models. Even low poly models can look great with the right textures and normals to give the illusion of shading and micro geometry.

    Hi Daniel great tutorial thx, i was looking for something how to animate lights and i followed yr method via driver. It actually moves my whole object instead of lights. As soon as i click generate in driver. Any idea why? I tried all different things nothing. thx

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому

      I don't know much about drivers honestly but F curve modifiers work on keyframes. So if you only want to animate the lights brightness make a keyframe for that, select the keyframe, then in the modifiers tab in the graph editor add an f curve modifier. I have a whole video on this check it out for more info. If you apply a curve modifier to the lights Location then it will move based on what that modifier is doing.

      @@DanielGrovePhoto I think i may have found the problem, there was a previous animation in object modifiers, i was trying different things so I deleted that. I will check your video later i don't have much time right now but thank you for your help.

    Hi! I just got your ship kitbash and I can see the objects in the blender workspace but when I render I get only the starfield. What am I doing wrong lol?

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому +1

      Turn on the render switches for those objects or collections. It's the camera in the Object Outliner window. When you start piecing together your own ship with my pieces I suggest moving those pieces to their own collection, make sure that collections render switch it on. Also go watch my newer kitbashing video is shows how to use files like those and be organized.

    what did you do for the engine thrust?

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому

      I cheap trick where I use an outward moving procedural texture with alpha. The noise slides down a cylinder and fades out by using a gradient. It gives the impression of a jet of fire. Layer a few and it can look decent. But I recently put a product online for procedural thruster jets and they look awesome check them out at gumroad.com/danielgrovedesigns

    Can you please advise the system configuration for blender model rendering?

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  3 роки тому

      Not sure exactly what you mean by system configuration. Do you mean Blender systems tab settings? Or preferred hardware system for a pc build? For modeling in Blender you don't need much in terms of performance unless you're modeling huge 1+ million polygon meshes in which case more ram is helpful I believe. System settings (and hardware) come in to play when you're doing rendering.

    • @marsmotion
      @marsmotion 3 роки тому

      with 3d you need a beefy fast processor because 3d is processed hierarchically. to render a great video card with lots of vram and hopefully lots of little processors...solid state drive for c: and D: if you can. best is a ssd on your mother board that way no time lost comms with processor. lots of fast ram too. but for doing 3d the most imp is a processor that can have a single thread ripping thru those hierarchy's of math functions that make 3d models render in blender.

    Would it not be more efficent to store everything for a blender file inside of one folder instead of all over?

    • @DanielGrovePhoto
      @DanielGrovePhoto  4 роки тому +1

      About 90% of it is in one folder. I have all my PBR map images organized by category in a master PBR folder. But the textures that were "elsewhere" in this video were from a Kitbash3D set which I kept the Kitbash3d textures in it's own folder so that I wouldn't break the texture paths in those kitbash projects. But other than the kitbash stuff which I occasionally use it's all in one PBR folder tree.
