This just reassures my belief of fashion being stupid and to rely on style instead, Ill just wear what looks better on me and screw fashion. Looking good>>>being fashionable. Sometimes what's fashionable can make you look worse
I am a classic body type and the minute I put on a loose dress or a tunic, I look very odd. I finally learned that tailored, but not overly fitted, pieces look best on my frame.
I think I may be some sort of classic…for that reason. Thought I was a natural, but honestly the classic used to be the least appealing to me 😂 so maybe that got in the way of objectivity. If I look at any of the things I look & feel best in, I can make the case that the lines, fabrics, etc fit either natural or classic. 🤷🏼♀️ perhaps DC who gained weight so I feel distorted? That or I am a natural with classic essence.
Something I think that's interesting to note about Grace Kelly's white dress is that it's not flimsy, weightless lace. Actually, It looks to be eyelet, as well the outline of the dress is pretty clean. Another fun thing to think about is how many different types of lace there are and how some could be argued more "yang" and some more "yin". At least, I think so.
She was. I love how classy and beautiful she looked in these clothes, while most types, except classic ones, would look boring and undistinguishable in classic style.
@KT she didn’t dress for her type due to the strict dress code put in place by the royal family. Classic silhouettes are much more in line with royal protocol. After her divorce we saw her in a lot more FN friendly lines.
My mom had a fashion and etiquette book from the 50s that said any pant or skirt with belt loops had to be worn with a belt, or it was considered sloppy! I guess it was like being not fully dressed and something you shouldn’t do, especially if you were already going more casual with slacks or jeans!
I still remember the first time I saw a Grace Kelly movie. It was To Catch a Thief and that blue dress changed my life. I was only a little girl but I’ve never forgot how I felt when I saw that dress. It was like that feeling when falling in love. I still love that dress.
I just now realized that my grandmother is a classic type and I've seen her wordrobe as child, the same pieces like Grace Kelly's - well tailored shirts, midi skirts, some pencil skirts, and of course very classic dresses. When I was a teenager I tried all of them and it was a fabulous experience for me! Textiles are very different than today's, some of them can stand straight on you, no flexibility. But in this way the cloth actually can shape your body, not the opposite like today. I'm a pure romantic type so these classic pieces looked a little bit strange on me but they teached me what style means.
Hi Aly, would you be able to do a video on a soft classic icon? Especially one who is modern? It’s pretty hard to find prominent examples of soft classics aside from Marion Cotillard and Kirsten Dunst.
To be honest, I hope not. I'm tired of seeing them, they are always the two main exemples for Soft Classic when there are many better dressed Soft Classic. I would love to other celebrities like Meryl Streep, or Lupita Nyongo (I feel like she is one of the biggest celebrity fashion icon nowadays with Zendaya, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian.)
I look at photos of Dakota Johnson as well because, though unverified, I feel her style really honours her SC lines (in most cases). But I would also love a video on a SC icon!
Thank you! I am a straight up classic and I have been waiting for this video. It explains why my eye has always been drawn to the pieces that we can see are classified as classic. Very validating. I’m not boring, I’m classic :-)
Thank you for this. You are right, classics look better in fabrics that have some body. Not too clingy or draped. They look better in tailored fits than in oversized clothes. In the 1960s, Grace Kelly continued to wear subtle make-up. The lips got paler, more nude than red, but she kept her eye makeup fairly natural. She never worn the bold eye makeup with false lashes and dramatic liner that was in fashion in the 1960s. I've seen her with the same teased, bouffant style Jackie Kennedy wore. Hair was neat and set on curlers, but a bigger outline and softer, larger curls than the 1950s. It doesn't suit her as well, because her features are smaller, and got overpowered by such large hairdos. At 15:45 Bell coat or swing coat were very useful to hide pregnancy. Women didn't flaunt pregnancy, but this was the post war baby-boom years. There was a whole parallel style for pregnant women, because there were so many. At 17:25 the striped coat was a Hudson Bay Blanket Coat Jacket. The pattern is loud for her, but this style is classic since the 1930s. At 18:10 Princess Grace is shown wearing a pink turban and an Emilio Pucci wild print. The print is large, but she can still carry it off because this one is in gentle colors, with very low value contrast.
Thank you for the educational, pictorial videos. Love seeing those great Hollywood beauties and their individual fashions. Glad that some of the fashions are timeless. Praise ro you, and love your hair and color. 😊
I actually wore some of my mother's dresses and suits from the 50's when I was a teen in the 70's. Definitely different fabrics compared to the fabric of my "newer" clothes in the 70's
Grace Kelly was so amazing. Her waist was so tiny. I notice the styles of the fifties were so much sharper that they are today. Pointy bust, tiny waiste and curvy hips. For some reason we do not use this sharpness today although we have some of the same classic styles and pieces. Women have gotten larger so the styles and sizes have changed. I have noticed this in some of the pieces I have bought from the same brand. Ten years ago the sizes were smaller than those of 2021. I am so sad that Grace Kelly left us before her time. She died in a car accident.
How I've always loved the style of Grace Kelly -- so completely classic and classy! You asked for comments about fabrics from the 1950s and, since I was born in 1946, I thought I might comment. YES! Fabrics were wonderful then, and clothing construction was done with care, more like tailor-made. As a young woman in the 1960s and '70s, I loved to sew (for myself, my children, sisters and occasionally for my mom), and we had several really great fabric stores to choose from with luscious bolts of amazing woolens, silks, linens, etc. There were less blends, more natural fibers. Now fabric stores are few and far between, and their inventory doesn't come close to what used to inspire me. Times have changed.
The multi-color striped coat is from the Hudson Bay's Company, it is renown for its warmth over its look (although still iconic), it's more like the Canada Goose coat of the time. So was Grace Kelly's fashion statement about the bold colors, the brand or the quality of the fabric? Who knowns, maybe all of the above.
This was excellent. This helped me understand Kibbe better than anything I have ever seen or read. Starting with an understanding of the classic, it’s much easier to understand the meaning of and prescriptions for the other body types. Thank you.
The picture in the winter with the white coat with stripes is called The Hudson Bay coat. It is a popular traditional coat in Canada. We still wear it. That pattern is also made into scarves and mitts.
Amazing video! Could you please do a "Boho Style For The Body Types" series, please? That would be amazing!! Sending love, happiness and good energy ✨🤍
I LOVE to collect real vintage pieces!! So many I had in my hands haha! Some I selled, some I wear. I have beautiful silk dress from the 50s, it reminds me so much of Grace Kelly. It's blue with gold rose embroidery (jacquard material), slim at the bodice and very full on the bottom. I also have 60s woolen costume, 50s cashmere beaded cardigan, 50s woolen midi full skirt, so much pieces from 80s and 70s... I love Kelly's style and I take inspiration from her all the time.
My Mother's Aunt had a dress that she wore in the 1960's. She gave it as a wedding gift to my Mom, and now I can wear it. It is an amazing experience! The fabric is more quality focused. The zipper is heavier, more thicker construction. The color... the classic little black dress.
Grace Kelly is my style icon! She was so elegant, a great actress as well... I think I have her body type not sure tho.. Its so tragic that she passed away before her time... Great video!😊
I love Ginger's 1930's looks which seemed to work beautifully with her classic proportions. I found as she got older thru the decades she leant more towards a romantic style and tended to look overdone and fussy. It would be a very interesting analysis!
The studio chose Ginger's clothes because she didn't have very good taste. She liked very frou frou styles, very low-class and tacky. She was the sort of woman who would take a beautiful, elegant gown and tack huge fake flowers all over it (actual example; yes, big, bulky fake flowers). The studio had to be very strict with her. Left to her own devices, she was kind of a disaster.
Oh gosh yes !!! I'm here for it the pics I see on pinterest my husband says I look like Ginger Rogers maybe a Grace Kelly but he says Ginger Rogers I could be a doppelganger lol . Id love for a video on her!
Thank you for this priceless video. Do you schedule consults for make-up and hair? I am getting married and i'm interested in creating my best look for that day and time! Thank you! I hope you're enjoying your time here in the US.
I always struggle to feel youthful as a classic. As a 19 year old, everything always seems way to elegant that I fear the clothes will age me. Don't mistake me, I love the classic look but is such a dissonance from a more casual look that is commonly seen in people my age that I can sometimes feel off.
Wear similar styles to your contemporaries, but keep a few things in mind. The fit is the one thing that will matter most. Not too tight, but not oversized either. If you can keep to your natural shoulder line, it helps a lot. Buy fabrics with some body to them, not too thin and limp. Not too bulky either though. There are some things that won't suit you, ruffles, asymmetry, too many ornaments. Other that that, enjoy fashion like others wear. Natural shoulder, natural waist, a body skimming fit. Choose from fashion, but only what suits you.
Besides the good advice already given here, I recommend having great staple pieces. For example, if you want to wear a "trendy" top that's a bit shapeless, make sure that your jeans fit well to keep you from looking unkempt. On usClassics, an overall slouchy and I'll fitting outfit reads as "disheveled" rather than "relaxed".
I know you made this years ago but I just saw it. Thank you for your efforts in creating this video. You know what you’re talking about and I have learnt so much. Thank you!!!!! From Australia ❤
I have a number of my grandmother's old skirts some are from the fifties more from the sixties to the seventies. Middle class, working women's clothing she made them all herself, there beautiful. 1950s fabric has a heaviness to them while still being able to move, a drape I think it's called.
I own a few 1940s blazers both fabric and tailoring are amazing. The pieces are structured and between the lining and the outer fabric there is a third fabric that’s more stiff to maintain the shape.
I thought Grace Kelly was soft classic, but it makes sense that she is actually pure classic. She always stayed right in the middle, not too yang and not too yin. I still don't know what type of classic I am. I thought I was dramatic classic because I look tall and have long limbs, and give a bit of a flamboyant natural vibe, but dramatic classic recommendations look too stiff and dull on me. Soft classic seems more fitting but I don't look as curvy or short as other soft classics do so I feel a bit lost. And I am definitely not pure classic because my facial features also stand out a bit. Any other classics out there have this problem?
I’m a classic, but I am curvy/hourglass and I have a lot of flesh on my upper arms and thighs. I might be soft classic, but I’m the same height as Grace Kelly, not small. So I’m not sure...maybe we shouldn’t overthink it.
Grace was a Princess in the pictures of her wearing the bell-type coats which would be appropriate to hide her pregnancies which may have been protocol for royalty back in that day.
Aly, would you please consider making a video about face asymmetry? I struggle with finding myself beautiful and I suppose many other women find it hard too.
That was great! You always are so detailed and paint a clear picture so it is easier to understand! Thanks! I am a classic by the way and you have been helpful!
Your Pinterest boards are not connecting for me regarding the classic types... wardrobe, etc. says error... and more. Thanks for correcting this issue, as well as for ALL the help, education, and understanding you bring to us!
Aly I think when you are saying "costumes" you are meaning what we call "suits"! I know in many languages the word for suit is something similar to costume (also why we used to call bathing suits/swim suits "bathing costumes"!) In English today we use the word costume just for character outfits like for movies, performances, Halloween, etc.
My style icon is the amazing Dina Merrill. She wasn’t as famous as Grace Kelly but she was an amazing beauty, philanthropist, businesswoman, and billionaire. Her style was old money classic very similar to Princess Grace. I’d love to see you analyzed her.
I am still determining if I am a Classic or Dramatic Classic (my face is what is throwing me off) but I am now sure I am a Classic in my body. These videos are amazing, you have very much perfected this craft and I thank you so much for sharing!!!
Thank you Aly! I ❤️ this and the classic look. I took the kibbe test years ago and then again now. I get classic but I’m a pear shape. 🤔 wondering how that works with balance. My shoulders and hips are the same width. Can you go by shoulders?
Hi Aly, really enjoyed Grace Kelly, could you think about a video on Queen Elizabeth, Princesses Kate, Ann etc., the ladies of Windsor, thank you from Nashville Tennessee!
Ingrid Bergman for Natural! It would be so interesting since she was unusual for the era with wild brows , broad shoulders and all... God jobs thank you :)
Hi, Aly! I love your channel, and I’ve learned so incredibly much about fashion in the last year I’ve followed you. But now I’m at a loss because I have no idea where to buy cute clothes! Everywhere sells ugly clothes, crop tops (never, ever wearing one), and see through materials. Where should we go to look for nice clothes that are fashionable and not crop tops?
Thank you for doing this because Grace Kelly truly was a style icon with her classic style and I am enjoying this however I must tell you for a fact Grace Kelly was 5 ft 7 in tall
Does anyone have any suggestions of where to shop for soft classic clothes in the UK? I was a H&M girl but after watching Aly's series I think the clothes are more suited to Naturals and am at a lost of where to shop now.
I find shopping online for korean style clothes works great for me as a classic. Classic lines are very in right now and the fabrics are usually less cheap looking even if not expensive. Try looking on Pinterest or insta for inspiration and find online shops

I really wish fashion was still like this: tailored and made of high quality/natural fabrics.
You should wear whatever you wish! Tailored clothing and high quality fabrics are classic and always look incredible
Me too they are absolutely gorgeous
high quality fabric was imported from hindustan that is present day India, bangladesh and pakistan. later on due to industrialisation in western countries imprt duties were enhanced to increase demand of domestic goods.
Me too!!!
Super tailored styling doesn’t look good on everything though. And natural textiles can be too expensive to care for and buy for poorer people.
This just reassures my belief of fashion being stupid and to rely on style instead, Ill just wear what looks better on me and screw fashion. Looking good>>>being fashionable. Sometimes what's fashionable can make you look worse
Couldn't have said it better!
So true. I'm a soft classic and even many trendy stuff (I'm from SE Asia) here looks silly on me. 😂
I don't think it's about fashion bc fashion is fashion no matter the time I think you are referring to trends
@@afrinsayed5902 OMG SAME!!! Btw, is highwaist baggy jeans that hype for this year is looking nice for SC ??
Spot on
I am a classic body type and the minute I put on a loose dress or a tunic, I look very odd. I finally learned that tailored, but not overly fitted, pieces look best on my frame.

You should do one on Princess Diana! Great series, thanks Aly!
Definitely
But she kinda didnt dress for her body type at all. Shes a flaboyant natural and dressed more like a classic or a natural
@@elizabethroa6970 that’s a good point. Maybe Aly could talk about why certain cuts didn’t suit her?

I just watched Grace Kelly in "High Society!" I loved her dresses, I'm so glad I'm (probably) a classic as well so I can take inspiration!!
The film was a side note to her outfits in that film, that was my experience at least.
She is spectacular in that film, and her outfits were splendid. I just wish we would still dress like that these days!
Can a romantic/Tr or soft gamine pull off a classic look? I love her style in that film
Jane Fonda had iconic looks through the 50s 60s 70s etc
Thank you for this. You are right, classics look better in fabrics that have some body. Not too clingy or draped. They look better in tailored fits than in oversized clothes.

I really enjoyed this video, especially since you not only layed out the elements of her style, but also WHY they work for ✨classic✨ style.
I know you made this years ago but I just saw it. Thank you for your efforts in creating this video. You know what you’re talking about and I have learnt so much. Thank you!!!!! From Australia ❤
Hi Aly, beautiful video as always! I was just wondering, might have something alike but for men, as well? It might be very insightful.
I have a number of my grandmother's old skirts some are from the fifties more from the sixties to the seventies. Middle class, working women's clothing she made them all herself, there beautiful. 1950s fabric has a heaviness to them while still being able to move, a drape I think it's called.
very interesting and many thanks for this video! loved it to the end !
I own a few 1940s blazers both fabric and tailoring are amazing. The pieces are structured and between the lining and the outer fabric there is a third fabric that’s more stiff to maintain the shape.
just love your top. The effect on skin is wonderful and so flattering
wow you are so pretty! i am watching these videos from many years ago and now this, youre still at it.
I love grace kelly. I am also a classic body type so I really look up to her as a style icon ;)
Lovely! I think you wear your makeup in a very classic, graceful style.☮💟☮💟☮
Grace was a Princess in the pictures of her wearing the bell-type coats which would be appropriate to hide her pregnancies which may have been protocol for royalty back in that day.
can you do carolyn bassette-kennedy please
Aly, would you please consider making a video about face asymmetry? I struggle with finding myself beautiful and I suppose many other women find it hard too.
That was great! You always are so detailed and paint a clear picture so it is easier to understand! Thanks! I am a classic by the way and you have been helpful!
I believe Grace was actually pregnant in a few of the pictures where she is wearing a “ bell” coat. Loved this whole video. Very well thought out.
Maybe, but I read once that she did not work again after marriage. She did one or two documentaries, i believe.
Your Pinterest boards are not connecting for me regarding the classic types... wardrobe, etc. says error... and more. Thanks for correcting this issue, as well as for ALL the help, education, and understanding you bring to us!
I'd love a tutorial on how you did your makeup for this video, and the products you used!
Really missed you! Thank you for your hard work and everyday uploads♥️
Please do Rita Hayworth or Lauren Bacall
Please do one on Natalie Wood! And thanks for your work again 🌼
Actually, a costume is also a noun for a woman's matching jacket and skirt, so it wasn't a mistake to call it that way.
I'm british and here we refer to a swim suit as a swimming costume
I also believe that she calls them "costumes" because that's how we call them in russian ☺️
I thought that some people might find it odd too. In my language the word for suit is "костим" (costume). It might be a slavic thing.
I call them costume too.
I was just watching your Sophia Loren video! ❤
My style icon is the amazing Dina Merrill. She wasn’t as famous as Grace Kelly but she was an amazing beauty, philanthropist, businesswoman, and billionaire. Her style was old money classic very similar to Princess Grace. I’d love to see you analyzed her.
Jean Harlow would be interesting also Greta Garbo had the most strikingly unusual face I'm not sure how to place it, very beautiful
I love Greta Garbo’s face as well.
her halterneck swimsuit she wore in to catch a theif...looks so cool modern and sleak
Love ypir hair like this Aly! So good to see another video from you Im addicted
Thank you! ❤
When you threw the white boys' shirt 😂
Haha omg totally 😆❤️
Great video Aly! Thanks!
Hi Aly, really enjoyed Grace Kelly, could you think about a video on Queen Elizabeth, Princesses Kate, Ann etc., the ladies of Windsor, thank you from Nashville Tennessee!
I love this series! thank you for all the research.
Ingrid Bergman for Natural! It would be so interesting since she was unusual for the era with wild brows , broad shoulders and all... God jobs thank you :)
Aly, your videos are so interesting, informative and well done! Have you reviewed Jacqulin Kennedy’s body type and wardrobe? Thanks, S
Hi, Aly! I love your channel, and I’ve learned so incredibly much about fashion in the last year I’ve followed you. But now I’m at a loss because I have no idea where to buy cute clothes! Everywhere sells ugly clothes, crop tops (never, ever wearing one), and see through materials. Where should we go to look for nice clothes that are fashionable and not crop tops?
trijft and second hand
Are you classic? I love boden for colors! Lands end is classic...everlane!
Sadly, their catalogue is only online now but they still show items styled together in helpful classic outfits.
This is so informative and interesting- thanks!!
Thanks for all the info
love your video
Amazing! Thanks for your wonderful work 💖
Love your podcasts, have you considered making a video on Gene Tierney?
She is also a light spring I think so in talking about the colors it becomes about your coloring n
I wish you had a video like this for TR women!
Much respect...
One thing unique about her style I noticed is that slot of her clothes had masculine energies
Thank you so much, Aly!!! I was waiting this video! ❤
I need that white dress! at 12:00!
Thank you for doing this because Grace Kelly truly was a style icon with her classic style and I am enjoying this however I must tell you for a fact Grace Kelly was 5 ft 7 in tall
Any fabric suggestions for classic type, please Aly🙏
Does anyone have any suggestions of where to shop for soft classic clothes in the UK? I was a H&M girl but after watching Aly's series I think the clothes are more suited to Naturals and am at a lost of where to shop now.
I find shopping online for korean style clothes works great for me as a classic. Classic lines are very in right now and the fabrics are usually less cheap looking even if not expensive. Try looking on Pinterest or insta for inspiration and find online shops
Thanking you. I will take a look x
I touched 50s pieces a lot and also wore them. I was a child in the 50s. Women were feminine then.
I want to see jane fonda makeup!
Make videos on photo poses for different body types❤❤❤
