- In this video I head down to a local mark to do some mackerel fishing using a light spinning set up and some metal jigs. This session was a lot of fun, with settled weather and calm seas, it was a pleasure to be out on the rocks, catching these powerful little fish!
The next day, I decided to cook some of this freshly caught mackerel and make some simple fishcakes that are packed for of flavour.
Join me in this video to see how my fishing session went, then I go through a step by step guide into how to make a tasty lunch! Thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

I was out with my son a couple of years ago and we had cought loads of makies then 5 guys arrived and god only knows what they was at. Hooks flying everywhere weights hitting the wall behind us and i decided to get out and stay safe . My son was extriemly upset as it was the first time that he had so many makies . Guys if you arrive on a mark thats fishing well be bloody carefull and be aware of others around you . Great stream mate thanks 👍👍👍👍
That’s a shame for your son mate. I suppose you get that in all parts of the world. The popular marks are the worst for that kind of thing.
A few nights ago I was fishing a lighthouse with a mate. As we got there, a few other guys were leaving. Then another guy came up with his dog. Before you knew it, the dog had swallowed a large hook the previous guys had left behind on the ground. It’s idiots like that that give anglers a bad name. Very upsetting for the dog too as it obviously started to panic.
Proper mackerel fishing cal, none of that tinsel chucking, people who do that usually take to many and end up wasting them, very competent fisherman and chef, nice one bud, having a go this weekend, hopefully half a dozen for the barbeque
Thank you mate! Yeah I agree, only fish for/take what you need. There’s no need to be greedy. Thanks for checking it out! 😀
It is ok to chuck the strings/feathers but then know when to stop and switch to single lures. Light spinning tackle and lures make mackerel fishing great sport.
I have un subbed from certain channels because they think it is great to take 40+ fish. Even if you are keeping some for bait that is excessive.
Wow, those fish cakes look delicious Cal. I will have to watch it again to see what spices you used. I learned something at the end when I you flattened the edges. Made the finish ever so much better.
Thanks Yvonne. They’re a nice simple snack to knock up.
Loved that video Cal, you're such a natural, fisherman and chef. Mackerel are such an awesome looking fish.
Over all a smashing vid, thx !
@@BLUEHORIZON-g2b thanks!
I’m dropping a vote for every video to end with a catch & cook!
Excellent video, both for the fishing and the cooking. Looking forward to looking through your other videos :)
I like them smoked. I clean them and put in salt. I smoke them on olivetree wood which is widely available here (spain). Delicious!
Yeah smoked mackerel is great! That’s what I’ll be doing next time I get a few.
Keep up the great videos cal, big inspiration for me to carry on lure fishing after a while of catching nothing👌
Thanks mate 👍🏼 Good luck on your future sessions!
Excellent video Cal.
Great ethos regarding taking only what you need.
Watching you prep and cook is like clockwork.
Clean tidy and neat.
Anyone would think you're a chef 😂
Keep on producing the catch and cooks- They help improve my cooking skills
👍🏻
Cheers Karl 👌🏼👍🏼
Living the life, fishing and eating the catch those fishcakes looked so good
😀🎣
Brilliant stuff Cal, really enjoyed this vid...and I bet you enjoyed those fish cakes...yum yum!
They were pretty tasty yeah. Thanks mate 👍🏼
look delicious, keep the vids coming 👌
You killed it with this video Cal. Keep 'em coming.. now Ima try that recipe for my local fish species in the Central Michigan area. I like Trout, I think ur recipe will work for a 15" one of them.
Sounds good mate! Thanks for watching all the way from Michigan! 🎣👍🏼
Cal, I tip my hat to you Sir, that was a cracking video well done, keep them coming,I’ll have to give the Fish Cakes a go, brilliant Cal.👏🎣
Thanks very much mate. Much appreciated! 😀👍🏼
That diamond sweatshirt is sick ,thougth i was the only dude who skates and goes fishing , haha cheers from North Spain
Thanks for watching from Spain mate! Good to know there are a few of us around 😂 Cheers!
Skating is fishing is my life! Or at least was till my daughter arrived 😅
Thanks for another great video Cal. Watching you cook makes me realise how long it is since I worked in a kitchen. Your chef's fingers in that pan brought back memories but I know it would hurt me now. 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍
Haha yeah you build up a bit of a tolerance to hot things when doing it all the time don’t you.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL You certainly do.
Brilliant cal ever thought of doing a cookbook ?
Yeah it’s crossed my mind. Lot of time and money to put into it though. One day 👍🏼
What a start for the 4 day Weekend
Thank you
😀👍🏼🎣
Just enjoying watching this videos MATE 😉 i hope that mackerel comes soon to Nederlands !!! Great session again well done
Thank you. Do you get this species of mackerel in your area? They’re great fun fishing for.
Yeah in early summer like 15/20 of May till 15/sometimes end of September between Hook Van Holland and Scheveningen
Nice knife skills! :))
my family and i went to cork a few yrs ago ,it was a small fishing village called youghal and i went fishing for mackeral in the harbour as they come in with the tide.i never fished for them before and it was just mental.i was pulling them in flat out cant remember how many i caught, maybe 20 maybe more .never seen anything like it
I bet that was great fun!
Fantastic video mate well done I’m hungry now for some mackerel 😂😂
Haha. Cheers 👍🏼
Great video Cal. Your culinary skills are sublime, wish mine was half as good.
That look delicious
@@orlandogarcia9751 much appreciated mate. Thanks
Those fishcakes looked top drawer, Cal! Well done mate ;) Another cracking video - SMITHY 😉🤙🎣🐟
Cheers Smithy! 🎣
Good vidio, as soon as I can get out and catch, it's going to be fishcakes for me 👌
Sounds like a plan!
Awesome! The fish cakes look amazing! Thank you for the upload
Another great video Cal, can you do a video on the rods, reels, line and metals you use.
Love the cooking ends to your vids. Makes it the full story. Fishcakes - super ! Q1: What were the swirls you put on the plate as the cakes were frying ? Q2: Where do you get the chilli oil from ?
Thanks! The chilli oil you can get on Amazon. The swirls were just some balsamic glaze and a bit of olive oil 👍🏼
great video great food .
Mr Fish! Mick in Jersey is a legend.
He certainly is
Nice one Cal, thanks again for sharing.
Really enjoyed that 👏
Fish cakes and cherry toms wow very nice mate 👍👍👍
Great stuff bro
Great video! Loved watching your mackerel fishing adventure and the delicious fishcakes you made the next day. Your step-by-step guide was super helpful. Subscribed to your channel and looking forward to more fishing sessions and cooking tips. Maybe we'll even collaborate in the future!
Thank you mate.
Great video, love a catch and cook! Where are you fishing? No mackerel in East Sussex off the shore yet😢
I’m in Guernsey mate.
Great video, like the simple tactics. Im a coarse angler but very interested in this type of fishing, but unsure where to start tbh. Everywhere i go requires pemrits etc. Im based near liverpool in the north west. Any adive on getting started? What type of swims im looking for etc?
Where abouts in the country is this mate? I usually catch them on the east coast around whitby. Just subscribed to your channel. This is the first video of yours I've seen, and im 'hooked'!
Thank you mate. I’m in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
@FISHINGWITHCAL sweet man, bet the fishing is a bit better over there? Hard to get a line in on the popular spots I know, so many people!
Also, I've been searching for that diamond jumper for ages, in brown too! Where did you find that bad boy? 😅
@@AlexT795 Yeah the fishing can be great over here at certain times of the year. There’s always something to target.
The jumper is old now, I’ve had it for a fair few years. It’s from a shop my brother runs over here. Check out Yakwax.com
Pretty sure those diamond jumpers are discontinued now though mate.
@FISHINGWITHCAL yeah they've been discontinued a while annoyingly, hoping for some old stock. I had one years back and left it in a pub somewhere in Scotland...
I'm in the middle of the country so I tend to fish fresh water for pike and perch but always eager to get to the coast, just need to learn more about what to fish for and when.
Definitely a chef. You’ve got those asbestos hands. Great vid mate.
Love this, hate tinsel tossers.
Love ya work mate I live in WA I can tell you must have some cooking background the way you use a knife and plate up. 👌
Those fishcakes looked delicious 😋
Thank you for sharing your catch & cook mate, it was really enjoyable to watch. If I may add a safety related comment, rock fishing in waders is a potentially very dangerous exercise. If for any reasons you slip or fall into the water and those waders fill up, you could easily find yourself in some very serious trouble. Take care & tight lines!
Thanks mate I appreciate the comment. It’s true about fishing in waders yes. I don’t tend to do it too often but you’re right, you do need to take extra care when doing so.
Nice video, and great recipe! Do you have any pro cooking skills?
Mate simply brilliant, untouchable in that kitchen, start up a cooking channel mate it will fly...
Haha thanks mate 👍🏼
Where did you go for fishin in this video. It was great to see you fish
Thanks
I’m in Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
Great vid! What do you keep the mackerel in whilst you're still fishing? Is there a cool bag/something else you recommend?
A cool bag would be ideal yeah. Especially during summer. On this occasion I just kept them in a carrier bag under a jacket as I was only there for a short time.
Awesome catch cal.... Greetings from Jamaica,,.
Cheers bro 🤙🏼
I love mackerel
Absolute quality!
Great video. This makes me go and try for mackerel.I tried using feathers but I wasn’t lucky at all 😂😂. Lads beside me were catching while I was just watching 😂😂
Great session providing a super feed at the end. Very professional production Cal, really enjoyed it.
Much appreciated! I’m glad you enjoyed it. Cheers.
Really nice video , enjoyed it . ! Look delicious , could you give the brand of the Korean sauce please :) ?
Awe yessss man 👏🏻
Cracking Video again Cal
Thank you mate. Appreciate it 👍🏼
nice one man! did you fish after sun rise ?
Thanks. No this was middle of the day.
Nice knife skills
What mackerel lure are you using?
Great video. I'm not sure if your description of " light gear" is still relelvant given the advent of LRF. I've seen guys land the same size fish using 1000 reels and 5-15g rods.
Well it’s a form of light gear isn’t it. Obviously you can go down the LRF root to target mackerel however, I tend not too as I’m always fishing places high up on rocks. You could also go down the ultra light root providing the wind and conditions allow it. Cheers.
hello mate, do you know when it is caught on redcar south gare or when is the season for mackerel
I’m sorry mate, I wouldn’t know I’m afraid.
When’s that new pan coming?
😂 I keep looking in different places but haven’t seen the right size pan yet. It definitely needs replacing!
Do you like that fishing rod grate video
Yeah I love that rod. It’s a Shimano Aernos 7-35g. Brilliant bit of kit for the price!
Hi mate is this in scotland
No mate it’s in Guernsey.
What make of Oakleys are they I want them 😎
They’re Oakley Holbrooks
Thanks
😉👍
Looks ace. You might want to invest in a new pan though, all that non stick flaking off in your food can't be good. Stainless all the way!
vids r always better when they're CNC...
👌🏼
My thoughts
These are totally beautiful fish, delightful to catch and delicious to eat so I admire you for:
1) Catching one at a time on light tackle with a lure; excellent!
2) Stopping when you have enough fish, even if the fun could go on; excellent!
3) Filming technique; excellent!
4) Knife skills; excellent!
I suspect far too many people catch mackerel with using a lump of lead and feathers, no pleasure, kill too many fish, and have no idea what to do with them; disgusting!
The only thing I would add, when the weather is hot, and it frequently is when mackerel are about, is to put them in a cold-box with cold packs. They deserve to be kept in peak condition.
Where abouin uk is this
Guernsey I believe
where is this place in uk
Thankyou
Where’s the cheapest place to by the MC Jigparas?
Veals probably
Hi Carl do you know anything about fishing in North Devon I live in ilfracombe
Hi mate. No I wouldn’t know much about fishing in Devon to be honest with you. I’ve only fished in the Uk a handful of times.
😀
Ware are you fishing about?
When I go sea fishing I always find my self doing thousands of cast without a single bite in optimum spots near me according to the locals. Any advice?
The Mackerel are in early this year
They showed up the same time as last year. They’ll be a patch when it’ll go quiet in the summer though.
Is wright lad you can not get fresher paul liverpool keep on fishing
@@paulpaul1-t8v 👌🏼🎣😎
Are YOU sure that the mackerel which you are KEEPING are of Legal Size ??? Some look small ?
@@BLUEHORIZON-g2b legal size in Guernsey is 20cm
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Thanks for the reply buddy. I don't keep so well these days sadly and was more just wondering is all, plz forgive me if I came across as an idiot.
Love your vids btw.
@@BLUEHORIZON-g2b No worries mate. Hope you feel better soon 💪🏼 Thanks 🎣
the technic doesn't matter its knowing what you need and the family will eat. The freezer sets your limits. Catch, eat and do not sell then we are the luckiest on the planet.
Looks like bear grills 😂😂
Is this in Uk?
Channel Islands I believe
How muchh gramme for the jig please 😅
@@The.ultimate.snake.. it’s a 20g jig
“Light Fishing” on 20lb line for Mackerel ? You been drinking??
It’s a form of light fishing isn’t it. I use 20lb braid for all my lure fishing, it’s strong, has a thin diameter and with the extra strength I can pull out of most snags. That’s my reason for it. It’s quite obvious you could go super light and fish 6lb line or similar however, I choose not to.
I’m not sure if you fish but braid doesn’t come much lighter then 20lb which is equivalent diameter of your average monofilament, braid has zero stretch so your feel everything through the rod, it’s also the right line to use over rocks/snaggy ground, you been drinking??
Waders with no life jacket on those rocks is recipe for disaster lol
They look pretty good but I reckon they're more of a potato cake than a fish cake
👍🏼
Please throw your sauce pan away once the coating has degraded and the metal is exposed it decodes toxic
Just how many people have died from toxic pot poisoning?
Those pans and pots gets a good seasoned coating from constant use.
You should be aware of so called.safe pots with unnecessary coatings on it.
not enough Makaer in the cakes, unsubbed
