Great stuff. I'm old enough to remember fishing for mackerel at a couple of hotspots on the north coast of Anglesey in the 1970s. Waiting on the rocks, watching the gulls. All of a sudden, mayhem. Gulls wheeling about, water frothing with fish. Whitebait jumping up, mackerel buzzing around them. Magic! If you had a trace of 6, you'd get at least 4. I seem to remember the end of August was the best time. We despatched them the same way. Dad was in charge, I'd gut em, and Mum would start the fire on the beach. Big pan, plenty of butter. At Penmaen Point, there were rockpools, where the whitebait who had escaped the mackerel were found. A little net, scoop em up, fry em for a min in butter, bit of bread, magic. A couple of times we were awaiting a nice bit of fish, gulls come back, and it all kicked off again! Happy days!
@@SirDigbyMinge-or8md you can’t beet cooking fresh fish on the shore my friend. That’s why you have vivid memories of the good times. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us all, brilliant!!👍
Good to see that you respect the fish when you decide to keep them, and don't let them flap about and suffocate. Touching a mackerel to release it, is fine and for some reason, the myth continues that they die if touched.
I live in New Zealand and love your vids. The same principles you apply there, are the same here. Bugger the nay-sayers mate, you're spot on with your approach.
I agree, some total novices will watch your videos but also some knobends do then feel they need to comment where the comments are not needed. Keep up the good work buddy👍 Is that the base across from you ?
Had got several of the Bombarda floats in different weights and with the floating and slow sinking though not tried the slow sinking as yet , as where i fish with with rocks also can be a bit iffy i suspect Plus have to watch for birds in the water , as been known small ducks have grabbed baits and no one wants that a hooked bird and had happened not to me but has to others . I got Bombarda idea from your past video catching sea trout thanks . And also for me Scotland is tops for fishing . Top scenery also seems where u are adds to the fishing . Ignore any of the not good comments as i suspect they are jealous . You are showing them videos and they do aid others in how to tie things and what to buy etc and good for newbies learning ..I was always a fresh water trout fishing guy but them days on salt water fishing into sea . Enjoyed your last video, this one was still better. I’m brand new to sea fishing, had a lovely bull huss and a 52cm bass last weekend in Anglesey. Keep it up. Subscribed 👍

Lovely Video I caught my first fish ever on 15 Sep at Llandudno North Beach 30 min after high tide. Like your details about line and rig I used 15lb Mono straight to Rig Via a Swivel and OKUMA BREAKAWAY FAST LINKS. Had a 20g Spinning Fishing Lure Spoon Metal weight with 3 hooks attached. one fish completely swallowed all 3 hooks had to dispatch it to get them out. I will look into your methods.
Thanks William, awesome you got your first👌I normally put on a metal lure with this, method sometimes bigger mackerel or other species take that. For this video I just wanted to keep it simple. Tight lines👍🎣
Thanks James, appreciate that. If your wanting your son to be able to cast safety without much trouble from snagging on the bottom, I would recommend somewhere like Helensburgh pier, like any fishing even for mackerel, I can’t guarantee they will be there. It’s mostly sandy bottom so you would be able to cast out with a weight and some mackerel bait on he bottom. If your looking for a rock mark? Drive through Garelochhead and stay on the road to Rosneath. About a mile along the road there is a large lay-by on the right of road with parking also on the left. It’s a very popular mark and relatively deep water. Tight lines buddy🎣
Thanks David. Absolutely!! a metal lure is fantastic as long as it’s heavy enough to get your rig out. I use it a lot but I just wanted to show the very basics in the video. There is a few advantages of using a metal lure, it doesn’t sink as fast as a weight, great for shallower water. Bigger mackerel often take the lure and you can’t catch fish on a lead weight😂
Nobody is an "expert" we all learn from each other, different lures and techniques and what works for you may work for me. Thankyou for sharing and ignore the negative comments!!! Edit. Such as that app 😮 Installed immediately 😂
Your approach to this type of fishing is almost the same as mine. I use a Daiwa whisker 10 foot rod and 20 lb. braid on a Shimano 4000. I also put the feathers on upside down but only use three and substitute the lead for a wedge type lure. I've ever picked up the odd Gurnard and quite a lot of school bass this way on the South Coast.
@@andyjordan6789 thanks for sharing in the comments Andy. It’s a very productive method for a variety of species as you know. I also use a lure on the end which can sometimes pick out bigger fish. This video is just a starting point hopefully for beginners to catch some wonderful eating fish or bait as well as having some fun.
Very good, I am quite experienced but still found it interesting. I used to live in Exeter and you can get mackerel down there all year around. I have moved back home to the North East of England so now I am not so lucky as it is my favourite fish to catch and eat, it saddens me to see people pulling them in 6 at a time and just leave them drowning in air. I assume west coast of Scotland, but where? Not the exact mark, but just rough area as I may be having a holiday in Scotland later in the year. John
Love your channel and your ethics, have you ever tried swapping your lead with a 40gram silver spinner, same job but sometimes pick an extra one up or the odd bass and do you ever fish for mackies with a single spinner, I personally find it more sporting and fun, keep up the good work
Hi Mick, yeah I usually use a metal lure or works very well. I used a single metal lure in my last mackerel video on a light setup great fun. Thanks for watching and your support buddy, tight lines👍
Not enough tackle shops left on the isle of man sadly and its due to online shopping. I understand you m8 it's all new to some and if you don't know you don't know, I've been teaching someone to fish for over a year and he recently told me he's not interested and it's not like I forced it on the guy he said he wanted to know as much as possible so I drew diagrams for him to practice rigs etc and it's all for nout but atleast I know in future I'll ask if you want to know I'll show my methods but don't waste my time if you're not really interested. Anyway great content, I always think best fishing is an area with Pollack wrasse and mackerel and trying floating lug rag or sandeels your almost garunteed a fish.
Even if you make the most perfect video you will always get those negative comments. In fact you will probably get more as a some people don't like to see others succeed 😂😂 Another good video and some lovely Mackerel 👍
Thanks for this video. I found it really informative. I'm planning to do a bit of mackerel fishing off the west coast of Ireland this summer. Best wishes to you.
Watched this video and it put me in the notion of going fishing even though i've not fished for 15 years. Drove from Kilmarnock area up through Inveraray and Lochgilphead and onwards to Tarbert Pier , too many folk fishing , it's only a small area , so then went to Crinan , found a good bit to fish but was pulling in long grassy type weed around 9 foot long each cast.......plus it was pissin down so gave up after 20 mins. Can't fish Troon Pier nowadays and Portencross Pier is always busy , it's small too , so i think i'll give it a go from a shore like yourself sometime.
@@stevie9899-e6j That’s a bit of a drive mate. I got my first ever mackerel at Tarbert pier, like most places it use to be good for cod and haddock now it’s a shadow of its former glory but a lovely little place all the same. I try to avoid the busier spots, which are usually easier to fish hence why they’re popular. I hope your fruitless day hasn’t put you off fishing again though. Tight lines when you do get out again.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Thanks... ....... many years ago we used to fish Inveraray Pier too for Mackerel , it was good way back then , but with the 'hammer-head' at the end of the pier still closed i'm wondering if anglers are driving on through Inveraray to Tarbert. I really enjoyed the short spell of fishing that i had even though i caught nowt but very long strands of weed . I'm not too far from Largs,Wemyss Bay and Gourock so might give it a go from the shore up that way. As schoolboys in the late 70's early 80's we used to fish for cod through the night from Newton Shore at Prestwick and off Fairlie Pier , great memories. Done a lot of Pike fishing since then and caught some decent fish up to 26lb , but gave that up around 15 years ago......so it was nice just to cast a rod tbh. Aye i'll give it a go again , might even head up where you were fishing haha.

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Went to Portencross Pier today for a few hours , caught 5 in total on those tin-foil feather things, two were below 30cm's so released them. Was good to get out though , really enjoyed it........got told they're catching Mackerel from the shore at Largs too. Cheers pal
Not necessarily, I think if you’re going to keep them all day and you don’t keep them cold before taking them home, bleeding them will stop them turning. Mackerel are not bleed when they are caught commercially.
I would add that for food Mackies are much nicer if you bleed them immediately. For bait I wouldn't bleed them out as you want the blood in your baits. Good video. Thanks for the tip on the navionics app very useful.
Do you get any wind knots with that 40lb braid? I've given up on braid when lure fishing because of the line problems, but that was using 20lb braid. Wondering if the slightly heavier stuff would make a difference.
Hi Glen, very rare that I get wind knots mate. Things to try which will minimise wind knots are: don’t over fill your spool, wet your line well always before casting. Keep your braid wet throughout your session as it will dry out. Keep tension on the line during retrieval. Fishing with Light lures can be the main cause of wind knots as the coils on the spool can be loose due to the lack of strain on the line. During the cast those loose coils can fly off the spool resulting in a tangle and often the dreaded wind knot. If you use a mono or fluoro leader if the knot is bulky going through the rod guides this can be a cause for tangles. I always use the FG knot for my leaders when casting braid lines. Thicker braid can help but you will end up with the same results if you don’t follow the do’s and don’ts. Braid is superior to mono in many ways and for me the odd wind knot is worth it. Hope this helps mate.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Thanks for the detailed response. Wondering why you have the FG not and such a long leader? Could you eliminate the possibility of that getting tangled on just a small leader of say a couple of feet? I usually fish a bombarda of 30g in shallow water with a redgill behind which is great on shallow beaches, so would probably connect the braid to a swivel first then bombarda rig afterwards. For deeper water gonna try 30g dexters with a redgill behind on small flouro leader. Been using pre stretched mono to decent effect but would love the casting length of braid. Everytime I use it tho it makes me want to give up fishing! Was completely unaware of the need to make sure its wet.
@rapido2963 it all depends on how warm it is outside. I would just keep them as cold as possible in sea water. I normally take a bucket with me on short trips and a cooler with ice on long trips. Just use a bit of common sense. How long would you keep a bit of raw meat out the fridge on a warm day before it’s unsafe to eat.

Great mackerel fishing tutorial, you explained everything so well. Keep up the good work👌
Thanks buddy👍🎣
Happy days!

Great video, very good tips and I enjoyed picking up tips
Had got several of the Bombarda floats in different weights and with the floating and slow sinking
though not tried the slow sinking as yet , as where i fish with with rocks also can be a bit iffy i suspect
Plus have to watch for birds in the water , as been known small ducks have grabbed baits
and no one wants that a hooked bird and had happened not to me but has to others .
I got Bombarda idea from your past video catching sea trout thanks .
And also for me Scotland is tops for fishing . Top scenery also seems where u are adds to the fishing .

Great video learned alot from them all..was looking to take my son makeral fishing from the shore first time for both..where would you recommend 😊
Fantastic brother thanks… instead of using a weight do you think I could use a metal lure to follow the feathers?

Beautiful scenery and nice catch! Thanks for sharing!

John

Was good to get out though , really enjoyed it........got told they're catching Mackerel from the shore at Largs too.

Thanks for the video is it true that you have to clip mackerel to bleed to stop them going off
Not necessarily, I think if you’re going to keep them all day and you don’t keep them cold before taking them home, bleeding them will stop them turning. Mackerel are not bleed when they are caught commercially.
mate you share with us expirience and i support that . I been in brighton for frist time and didnt catch any fish just crabs.
Thanks for your support mate much appreciated👍

@@ciaspo thanks for taking the time to comment, happy to help👍

How long the fish will stay fresh? until I arrive home and put in the fridge?
@@jjoohhnnyy1333 hi Johnny, it’s funny you asked, I mentioned that in my last UA-cam video I did on Monday
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing thx mate, I saw it 😉
What was the answer?
@rapido2963 it all depends on how warm it is outside. I would just keep them as cold as possible in sea water. I normally take a bucket with me on short trips and a cooler with ice on long trips. Just use a bit of common sense. How long would you keep a bit of raw meat out the fridge on a warm day before it’s unsafe to eat.
