MACKEREL FISHING WITH LURES | CATCH & COOK | SMOKED MACKEREL

  • In this video, I head out to see if I can catch some mackerel to cook up later that day. I'd be using little metal jigs and some small soft plastics.
    After a really fun session early one morning, where I'd also catch a surprise fish and see a passing dolphin, I cooked my catch in my new Ninja Woodfire oven.
    This cook up was a simple but very tasty light lunch which went down a treat. I'd simply smoke the mackerel then load up a tasty sandwich!
    Join me in this video to see how this session went and stick around for the cook up afterwards. Thanks for watching and see you on the next one 🎣

    Just back from a fortnight on the West Coast of Scotland and caught plenty of Mackerel. Had some smoked in a toasted bun like this for breakfast, but wasn’t sure why I had the idea stuck in my head then realised I had seen this vid earlier in the year so must have been subconsciously inspired.
    Toasting the bun makes a difference, and I prefer horseradish to spicy sauce.
    Must say, stood on the rocks looking over to the small isles in the late afternoon sun with a craving for tomorrow’s breakfast felt very satisfying when the mackerel started banging on the line.
    Great fish to catch and a great vid. Thank you for the inspiration.👍

    Top tip for smoking any fish is a quick cure. 50/50 salt and sugar seasoning then over night in the fridge uncovered on a wire rack. The dehumidifier in the fridge causes it to form a pellicle that the smoke sticks to. The smoker looks banging, looking forward to seeing what you stick in it. 👍🤤

      As in like caster sugar?

    • @Scotland_my
      @Scotland_my 3 місяці тому +1

      @@georgeholmes6099 aye or granulated. Any sugar and salt works as long as it's 50/50 by weight not volume. 👍

      I came here to say the same thing. I've started smoking dogfish just to make use of the nuisance fish. Cured for no more than 30 mins and oak smoked for 30 mins it's lovely. 😊

      @@Scotland_my that’s the same way you make Gravelax. 50/50 salt and sugar, cured for 36 hours in an airtight tray.

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL aye exactly, just without the green stuff. The pellicle is a game changer with the smoker though. It's like a natural glue for smoke flavour. 🤘

    That's a nice way to serve up a mackerel yummy. I also take my hat off to you for saying you were going to dispatch your fish 😊 Nothing angers me more than people not dispatching there catch. And saw that dolphin just break the water right in front of you that's so cool. Once had a pair come right upto the side of a boat whilst out fishing then come up the other side, Magic 😊

    Could you do the same with a 2 or 3 rig feather? Or would it be tangle central?
    Just thinking small weight at the end and if you it into one more likely to hit others?
    Or am I being stupid...new to this sort of fishing so any help is great.
    Cheers and they look bloody lovely to eat haha

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 місяці тому

      Yes mate a lot of people tend to do that. You can either fish a small weight at the bottom or you could use something like a 40g Seeker. It’s an effective way of fishing especially in deeper water. In theory, the bigger lure at the bottom should tempt any larger fish that are chasing the mackerel.

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  3 місяці тому

      It all depends on your casting technique, reel size, rod, lure, etc etc. generally, yes. Braid is a lot thinner than mono therefore, it’ll peel off the spool much easier then casting mono and you’ll have much more contact with the lure. I’d fish with braid hands down over any mono!

      When you buy the Ninja oven, it comes with two different flavours of chips. To be honest, it’s not an authentic way of smoking anything, it’s an easy way to do it. I used the standard ‘sweet’ blend which tastes like a sweet Smokey flavour. There’s not a lot of depth to it.
