      Wow, thanks! Good to know what I did right too :-) Yes they supplied the camera crew; the footage is partially shared across all 6, and partially specific to me. The rest is taken off official Toyota videos, or my own stock, or me talking.

    This video has all the information I needed before purchase.
    I am almost settled on buying the highest trim of the 300 series, I won't need to offroad for a while since I modified my Y62 to do the offroad duty it has 230k on it and still going as good as new.
    What is making me hesitant is that my y62 is still going strong but its getting a bit rough for daily driving due to modifications and the desire to drive something new is strong.

    Well Robert that was a very good video. You have actually made me want to take one for a run. I love that it's got some genuine offroad features that I can control as driver. The turn assist is exciting.

    Thank you so much for such detailed review. I am not sure how much are the media restricted by toyota since you were invited to do the test, but I specially apprecite that you pointed out some of the issues of this prototype instead of just simply reading the script of how good this car is like others. Looking forward for a more independant review and comparison on the produciton model.

      We aren't directly restricted...but indirectly you can be blacklisted so there is an incentive to be nice to the car. I fall in and out of favour depending on who is running PR at the time and what I've said - there's at least one carmaker who isn't in my fan club right now, but you just have to wait as journalists usually outlast PR chiefs! Toyota have always been fair to me though. Even when I find things wrong with their spec sheets :-) I do think it is a good car though. I would own one and drive it anywhere. I like it.

      @@L2SFBC There is not a single LC300 review that covers this much in details. Not to mention a comparison aganist the 200. You also did great in pointing out some of the issues of this prototype while others who releases at the same time only praise how great of a car it is and not mentioning any of the issues that you found.

    They were pre production mules only , not able to be sold & only on a restricted registration . Sales start today 7/12, with some owners being able to finally get their vehicles . Full dealer stocks available before the end of this wk

    Front overhang.... Is... somewhat Long. 32degree of approach angle is good. it takes 17inch rims. That's another plus

    Fantastic review - thankyou for your effort and hard work to put it together. Uncommon tyre sizes and uncommon offset in a 6 stud rim. Might need to upsize to 285 to get taller tyres although some brands are available in a 265/70/18.

    Very nice video again Robert. A remark regarding the tires section: 17” rims are not saving weight compared to larger rims with identical wheel size because the tires are heavier. Also, there is a very noticeable difference in handling between a 17” 70 section and an 18” 65 section. I know this from experience because I’m running both 17” and 18” on my Prado. 18” in my case are Winter tires, 17” are Summer tires. The 17” are much softer and vehicle control is so much worse. But I use the car in off-road situations in summer, so I keep the small rims.

      No, low-profile tyres are heavier than higher-profile. I have weighed many of them and there will be a video on this in due course - you gain weight by going from 17 to 18, all else being equal, as the rim weight is more than the tyre weight. There is certainly a handling difference with profiles and the best carmarkers even change their ESC and suspension calibration according to profile, but 65 to 70 is hard to pick and I suspect the differences between summer and winter tyres are greater than the profile.

    You’re right. The Defenders boot is too small. But that’s due to the longer wheel base and more space for the 2nd row passengers. Overall the boot & interior space would be about equal to a LC300. In terms of pure capability, the Defender is far ahead the Toyota (both on and off-road). Land Rovers traction control is far superior. Plus they have air suspension. Reliability is obviously a pressing question. If your life depends on it, don’t get a new car. Time will tell if the new LC is still reliable. The Defender had some problems first, I’m not sure how it’s currently doing.

    Any idea why the GX has a different offset wheel to the rest of the models? And what a shame Toyota isn't offering diff locks on the rest of the range. Even a Prado GXL now comes with rear diff lock as a standard factory fitment. Single or twin cranking batteries? Is the loading height for the cargo area higher or lower compared to the 200 Series? Is the alternator placement better on the 300 Series? Timing belt or chain? What capacity winch is Toyota offering as an accessory for that alloy bar? Are the DPFs mounted low like the 200 Series or higher up? How well is the intercooler protected? Is over bonnet visibility better or worse compared to 200? Does the GX have air con vents to the 2nd row seats? How does the electric steering feel compared to the 200's hydraulic system? What viscosity engine oil does the diesel use? Great review of the 300 Series - the best I have seen so far! Well done!

      Hi and first thanks! Answers:
      1. different offset wheel as the tyre is narrower 245 vs 265, and therefore requires a narrower rim but the width must be the same or close. The 245 would be lighter than the 265 for sure contributing to the GX's best payload figure.
      2. Don't know re batteries.
      3. Loading height wasn't measured is about the same.
      4. Alternator - didn't get a chance to see, but Toyota have gone on about waterproofing so I expect it would be ok.
      5. DPFs sorry don't know
      6. Alternator don't know either, or its capacity (did ask)
      7. Winch. Didn't see. Would expect 9500l which is fine for the 300 (see my snatch block videos for wjy)
      8. Over bonnet same as 200.
      9. No idea re GX, there wasn't one to look at.
      10. Electric steering feels fine compared to 200. The only thing wrong with EPS is whoever built it. You can argue the point for very specialised sportscars but not for 2500kg 4X4s. It's just better.
      11. No idea re oil.
      I'll plan to cover these if I get onto the press launch where we can actually spend more time with Aussie spec vehicles. It was a very rushed 3/4 day...even went without lunch so I could get more done!

    Since BTC is disabled when OEM lockers are selected, this makes it such an easy decision to get one without the oem lockers. Will fit aftermarket lockers on, so I can still have brake traction control and individual locker

      Hopefully that won't be the case on production versions...but you could also go twin-locked. However, the cost of the GR Sport is a little crazy compared to the GX!

    IRS doesn't not increase dynamic clearances. Due to short control arms and the need for the control arms to move through their entire arc to provide suspension travel, ground clearance becomes dynamic based on load. Thus causing the suspension to lower well past the ground clearance of a solid axle.

      Depends on the design. Generally, you do get better ground clerance, and yes it lowers, but not generally beyond the equivalent live axlen unless the front end is quite soft and you're heading downhill. I say this based on extensive real-world testing, plus having owned live, IFS, and IFS/IRS vehicles.

      @@L2SFBC I sold my Ranger and purchased a GU Patrol and this was one of the factors. The ability to travel at speed in deep ruts without bottoming out is a significant advantage. The Ranger would frequently have the lower subframe contact the ground. It really depends on the terrain you are driving on.

    This is fantastic!. I do have a couple of corrections. The fan is coupled mechanically, but it's electronically controlled. Not electric. If the Transfer case is still using the same Torsen center diff as the 200 the nominal split isn't 50/50. It's 40/60 front/rear.

    I bought a 200 Sahara in 2010, it now has 155K on it and it is heavily modified and highly maintained. I'm excited to move to a 300. Can't wait.

      @@L2SFBC I lot has changed in 11 years since I built the 200 with accessories. Starting with a clean sheet and rethinking how much I'd do differently this time. The 200 was retired from daily driver duties about 5 years ago and just sits in the garage.

      @@L2SFBC The 200 was built over time. The 300 I would strip and build in 1 hit. Carefully planned electrics, LIthium only, Redarc or Enerdrive, Probably no winch (I've used my current one, once in 11 years). I would weigh every component added to the 300 and find the lightest option possible. (200 have GVM and GCM upgrade)

    Great to see a reviewer that does not appear agenda driven, either biased to the product itself or to their own channel's traffic potential. I subscribed for that reason, good information that seeks to inform and educate and with similarly informed opinions based on reasoning and explanation. What some may refer to as good "signal to noise" in scientific jargon.
    Did we ever find out if the 300 GRS front and rear lockers, when individually applied, cancel traction control for the other axle? Also, do the other models of the 300 have sway bars that are fixed and potentially better for on-road dynamics ? There was some question about the e-kdss increasing body roll around corners at speed.

      I didn't finalise that question but I will ask again.E-KDSS should minimise body roll to at least that of the standard cars; it's more of a disconnect for offroad than a onroad design.

    Great presentation, will be interesting to see how the new donk puts up with all the weight of accessories & tow weight in the real world, especially with 100k plus on the clock, ive owned 3 200's & still currently have 2 & can't say after comparing the two will be running off to my local dealer to drop the hammer on a new one.

    I would expect that new gen Landcruiser would be Euro 6d (since this will be sold into EU countries) which means it will have SCR (adblue), DPF + EGR, which probably explains why it has a smaller fuel tank as they had to find space for the DEF tank.

      Yup, there is a page in the owners manual that refers to DEF (Ad Blue), so yes, it's already on 300 Series diesels sold in EU.

    Thanks for all the information. I am seriously looking at upgrading my 105 landcruiser that I bought new in 2005 for a 300 GX. 470 K of virtually trouble free motoring except for 4 air conditioner fixes will be hard to beat though. I just hope the V6 will be reliable.

      Hot v6 engine, 2 turbos sitting in the middle of the v shaped engine it will be interesting when the tuners start making them hotter with more fuel, Is the starter motor still in the middle as well?? Like the diesel v8.

      Mean while diesel fuel quality is terrible, with these highly technical injection systems this will be interesting for this engine, petrol is far more forgiving.

    Keen to see the 300 series fully loaded up and doing the Canning Stock Route. Andrew SP White claimed his stock 200 series completed the entire track without a mechanical failure. I think that's a worthy test for any offroad vehicle.

      Any vehicle could do the Canning if prepared properly and driven properly. The Mercedes failure was due to poor prep and too fast driving so not a good comparison. Got to have all the context.

      @@L2SFBC If it was in a convoy wouldn't they all be doing the same speed? You are correct apples to apples and I don't have all the details. Just hard to prove the durability of a new vehicle based on press notes and a few hours of driving in easy conditions.

    great video! trying to understand the reduction in fuel tank size and range, but they have obviously prioritised payload at this stage. Surely the 5 seater would come with more traditional sized tank, or maybe its smaller to allow for "future efficiencies".

    Amazing Rob, you come across as one that has experience in research and design. Your detailed assessment with all the facts to back is the most educated and balanced review I have ever watched. Some things that stood out:
    - Pitch of the 300 with the bullbar and seeing how unstable in comparison with the 200 without. How can data be affected by this, do they have front suspension to pair with the bar as a package to fix?
    - You put the high power small engine by just upping boost theory to bed by explaining how the engine gains more power. This is so complicated and left to the computers to do it’s job. Time will tell if a touring trip is ruined by 1 sensor out of how many? But the graph of the power and reliability shows that Toyota designs with that in mind. So time will tell.
    I watched another review that was with you and it was pathetic. I could’ve done better. Saying that because it was all info on a brochure and said yeah drives better. That’s it and they are a well known. Plenty of car journalists out there who just drive down a road but not many like you. Well done mate!

      Thanks, much appreciated! Suspension design is a real science with a bit of art. I intend to do more on it. Basically a bar and winch is a fair bit of weight in a terrible, terrible place for vehicle dynamics; the only places worse are right at the back end (think dual wheel carrier) or on the roof. Anyway, it's not just the extra weight, it's the location of the weight - because it's ahead of the front axle there's more weight added to the front axle than mass. So say it's 50kg mass all up, there may be 60kg of weight added to the front axle, and 10kg off the rear. Then that weight is a long way from the centre of gravity, so there's what we call a moment (similar to a lever). Hence the pitch, and why ANY vehicle with a bar/winch needs a stiffer front end. Also part of the suspension travel is used up by the weight so you'll get to the bumpstops quicker, and that slightly changes the camber of IFS. I could go on but you get the idea.
      Anyway, it is entirely possible to plug the numbers into a computer which would tell you the new spring rate and damper settings for the front, and if you're being really good, then you change the rear too but not as much so it's balanced. Then you test to be sure.
      I forgot to edit in my bit about the hot V config which will also help the efficiency ie power per L of capacity. I've added a note to it on the support blog post.
      Yes I try and explain why so viewers can make up their own minds. The 300 does drive better, but it's not enough of a difference to really notice from a handling perspective compared to an LC200. But that doesn't mean the 300 isn't overall a better car.

      Fantastic, I understand very much about the weight balance. Toyota clearly puts alot of thought so much so to move the engine back 70mm for that very reason. When I ordered front suspension for my car I was asked about bar and winch and I was given one to suit.
      I will have at look at the link you put up on the hot V efficiency.
      Very interesting your info, and on a different note, I learnt about transmission windup today. I activate 4wd low when reversing my caravan up my steep driveway to save riding the clutch but I hear the tyres jerk, now I know why.

    Great vid, your pricing is not driveaway pricing. Speak to dealers the on road costs really inflate the actual costs. It does make the sahara and sport quite ridiculous in their costs.

    That was a Very Interesting review on the LC 300 there Robert. I watched it from start to finish and rewinding it several times to clarify what you’ve said. Not reading other comments from others I was just wondering is the alternator and starter motor still at the bottom of the engine bay area. I have a 2016 79 series pre-DPF which runs extremely well but my main concern is river crossing and beach driving.

    Great unbiased appraisal, typical progression which is what most buyers want if they use this vehicle for it’s designed purpose. There are already enough hair stylist cars out there! Hope Toyota stay true to their credentials & much lauded reliability??? Not sure this is maintainable in 10-15 years time though?

      Why only text? Basically running out of time to re-shoot the video, and also it's long enough as it is. With text I can double up on info. TPMS is not mandatory for Australian vehicles so that's why it is rarely included. I think it should be mandatory as it's a great safety feature.

    Robert well done on the video. Very informative. I am very jealous you got to drive a 300 series so early on. A few comments. How much clearance is under the lift up tailgate? How tall are you? It looked like in the video that your head only just cleared the tailgate. Where you on a slope or was the ground relatively flat? Secondly a small correction Crawl in the 200 can be over ridden and it resumes again. That is certainly the case from 2012 onwards. Also are you sure all models have traditional KDSS? Apart from the Sport with E KDSS, Thanks again for taking the time to explain the detail.

    We may not see this line in the US as the 4runner and Tacoma have eaten away at it's sales. There's a new Tundra, that is on the way, but it's no longer available in a V8 version. Toyota seems to be abandoning those of us with a n RV.

    The image of the petrol says twin turbo on the engine cover, hence the twin air intakes; it is a dire shame that we won't be getting the twin turbo v6. the same v6 from the toyota aurion.

      Agreed but there is just no demand for petrol 4x4s when there is a diesel alternative. That is why Toyota withdrew all their petrol 4x4s.

    Great video! Thank you Robert! Why would Toyota turn off breaking traction control on the unlocked axle? That makes the Ranger more capable than the Hilux for example both rear locked. Did you had a chance to ask them that? I think it can be a huge disadvantage. Cheers from Mexico!

    Great review Robert - as expected. Took one for a drive yesterday. A beast! quiet, comfortable. Great for towing large and heavy things no doubt, but the pricing? Ouch. The two holy grails of LANDCRUISER - fuel capacity and second battery under bonnet. No space for second battery any longer. That's a real shame. After, jumped into the latest Prado as well. ALC300 makes Prado a 'small' car by comparison but the updated 2020 engine gets around pretty well in city traffic. Like to see what they do with the next Prado but I can't wait that long.

    Robert, Thank you for your detailed review by far the best one, its great that you were able to compare the 200 series with the 300 series. I’ve read a couple of reviews and concerns regarding the new diesel motor and the potential build up heat so close to the underneath side of the bonnet, is there a need to be a concern regarding this?

      I cannot say at the moment and my test was not long enough. I would however give Toyota benefit of the doubt on this. There is a bit of scaremongering going on to mine views and exploit natural distrust of new tech. I think an open minded approach is best with a degree of scepticism but I think Toyota would have a decent chance of getting it right.

      @@L2SFBC Fair enough. Those systems have been very unreliable on Land Rovers. I've seen Lexus LX with a faulty one as well. I hope they eventually make it possible though in future updates for the LC 300. If its not too late

    Absolute shame we aren't getting that petrol. I don't understand what Australia's obsession with diesel is. The low down torque argument doesn't really hold true anymore when you look at these new petrol engines coming out.

      Agreed, I convinced myself with my first Prado, a 2011 with the updated 4.0L V6. Beautiful motor that was. Now I have a 2012 with the 3.0L diesel and it stinks in comparison, only about 1-2L/100km better on the juice too.

      Due to the high cylinder pressures of diesel combustion, diesel engines must be designed with significantly more strength, durability in mind. This allows for significantly greater life span of the engine.

      I agree petrol engines have very little negative.
      Engine braking or low rpm torque. Pretty much irrelevant since no ones getting a manual. The auto will compensate for where ever the engine has its power and torque. Prime example is the Patrol. Less torque than the 200series. But tows everything just as well.
      Diesels last longer I think is long gone. This is not the 80’s. And we aren’t running poorly tuned carbys. Driven and serviced the same. Both will last longer than the first two owners will care.
      As petrol for the city and diesel for travel. Until every Zuk Sierra and motor bike are converted to diesel. Petrol will be available everywhere. Also I have read of diesel being intermittently available where a petrol has always been available.
      So many good petrol engines are available in other markets. It’s a shame they don’t come to Aust. And now with Toyota having there 1st modern tech petrol 4wd engine in 30yrs. It’s a real shame.

    No mention of the tailgate removal (13:00).... just skirted over it . Cargo size: A little bit more depth is 40mm for the 300. width a little bit less?? but 20mm height is less than the 200 height is which claims to be about the same???
