Well as both a BMW and Toyota fanboy, I'd go for the Land Cruiser as the only reason I'd get an SUV is for utility. BMWs should be fun little rwd saloons/coupés, which is what they became renowned for. SUVs have just cheapened and diluted the brand, aimed at people who don't know any better
SUVs make it easier for more developent to be made on the RWD sedans and coupes that we like. Interesting comparison. I bought the US base LC V8 in 2020 and love it for all the rugged and legendary style and durability. I also wanted a performance SUV and bought the smaller X3 in 2021. Love and appreciate them both for different reasons!
I own the X5 30d as tested and have spent a day withe a Prado and I can tell you that comparison would not have ended well for the Prado. The Prado is a significant compromise
I like both for very different reasons. I love BMWs, but if I want an off roader I’d get a LandCruiser. If I want a nice daily family car, X5 (with the optional 3rd row) is my choice
@@jeffsteyn7174 the point is that the Sahara ZX is designed to be a mall crawler and not an off roader like every other version of the LC300. So in a way it is. And I kinda agree that it’s silly.
looked at both and ended up Getting the X5. Mostly caus we could actually get one. at the time near the start of the year also like the one you tested we have the factory tow package and it tows so well
Andrew St, Piere , 4x4 Guru , has very low opinion for the x5 buyers, but really very low. X5 is goos for taking photos and sharing them on social network. I dont even know why this two were compared, they are totaly different league.
No one buys a Landcruiser without off-roading. Even though this is an on road landcruiser, it is still more capable off-roading compared to the BMW. This is definitely for people who go off-road 10%, and onroad 90%.
The Toyota 300 is getting a similar mixed reception to when the 100 series came out. Compared to the 80s series and the Patrol at the time, the 100 was much more road focused with ifs suspension, and cream interiors aimed at the American and Middle Eastern markets. The 100 series was more inline with where Land Rover were going with the Discovery 2 at the time, but kinda disappointing none the less.
Any day LC 300 over X5.We live in a big country, once set for a long journey, you expect to return in time aswell.Basically to travel in my own state I would prefer X5, to travel nation wide or for an international travel where we dont know what terrain and serviceability to expect I would go for LC 300, as the purpose of the journey is not to spend your day offs in a workshop that too in a foreign land.
Fair enough verdict given as you say the Sahara ZX is "meant to be" the on road model with lower approach and departure angles. But if you ever plan on getting off the beaten track, the LC wins any day of the week for capability and reliability IMO. Having said that, the ZX is a silly car to buy if you don't plan ever going off road.
At 100,000kms, the Landcruiser would have just broken in. The X5 would likely had its gearbox replaced, dashboard lighted up like a Christmas tree a few times and suspension squeeking all over
With the hood flutter, you can actually buy a foam/metal reinforcement that connects under the hood that A. Quiets it down and B. Stops the flutter until you reach like 120+... But I mean, why would you bring a land cruiser over the speed limit? They're not very fast haha. If Im gonna bring a car over the speed limit I'd rather be driving a mini cooper s or a JCW, now those cars are obscenely fun at speed
I think there were some points that I disagree with in the video. For example, the LC won in engines when you only have one engine option but the BMW has many options from tt v8's to i6 options with more power to even a plug in hybrid. Also the rear interior.. that was the base option with just the vents. You can get 4 way climate control and heated and cooled seats in front and back in the x5 too if you spec it. So while the BMW won, since this is an on-road test, it should have won by a bigger margin. Also, wouldn't the x7 be the correct car to compare the LC300 with if you go by physical size?
I'm a big Toyota fan. Have owned 3. Celica , 120 Series Prado and now a 2015 200 series.Between those 3 vehicles I have driven around 600,000km. (247,000km so far in the cruiser). I have NEVER had a single issue with any of them(nothing). It(they) just keep going without any fuss. Not a single creak or rattle or lead. and yes I have done some serious off road. They had all been regularly serviced. The 200 at a Toyota dealership. the other 2, not necessarily. But they were well maintained. They don't pretend to be(in my opinion) anything other than a well designed, ultra reliable vehicle that is designed to do a range of tasks(day to dating, 4x4ing, Towing, touring(to every corner of Australia) without a fuss. Not designed to be a road car(like X5), they are designed to tow up to 3500kg. Who seriously would tow 3500kg with a vehicle that is held together with a bucked load of spot welds and a few screws(I'm only joking, I'm sure they use hundreds of (self tapping) screws). An interesting Vid, but I just can't see anybody watching this for any other reason than entertainment. ( I did watch it all(almost). Thanks.
Dynamic driving difference is obvious,in one car(the wafty drunken sailor one)Jacob is hanging onto the panic handle for dear life. I couldn't care less about cars in this price range,a fool and his money, your banter is worth my time thats it.
What’s the point of having the warranty when it breaks down consistently during the warranty period? Isn’t that giving owners the fear of the BMW breaking down when they are expected to perform?
@@yslee1401 well, it's a lot nicer on the inside .. it's literally a luxury car vs a less luxurious luxury car, what you give up In reliability you tend to make up for in an effortless drive.
@@yslee1401 typically BMWs are actually reliable until they hit around 100'000km in my experience. (Australian models) My mother's BMW 3 series from 2011 has 150k km on it and it has only broken down once and still drives extremely well with no creaks or anything, it even has an electric convertible hardtop roof that folds into the rear boot. It's had electric issues but they only ever taken 1 day to fix without warranty.. occasional oil leaks but it's usually fixed when it needs to go in for an oil change anyway
Good review - don’t know how one could think the Toyota looks better, but to each their own. In terms of reliability, Toyota is the obvious winner, but people have an old perception of BMW’s reliability. Consumer reports in America have BMW as the third most reliable brand after Toyota and Lexus, so credit to BMW in improving a major fault area.
I have owned 3 X5's back to back and they have been very reliable right up to 250kms and beyon and I have worked them hard as tow vehicles - still my first choice of car, as I tell people who ask, find me a better car and ill buy it.
I have a 300 and would only replace it with a LX500. Speaking of which, when the time comes to replace the 300 with an LX500, I would most probably make money on the 300. The latter will not be the case with the X5, though.
Well I have both a BMW 116i and a land cruiser Prado 2.8L diesel turbo. I like both cars, but the Prado wins hands down for me. It's actually faster in a straight line, will go anywhere and is way more comfortable than the BMW by a country mile. Way more room and space inside, better tech, better display 10 inch apposed to the little skinny display in the BMW. The Prado has 360o cameras, terrain camera, anti collision warning, land departure warning, pedestrian and cycle warning, corner collision warning, adaptive adjustable cruise control, and a very nice light blue back lit display and buttons and a fridge in the centre consol. The BMW we have has non of those things. But I use the cars for completely different purposes. The Prado is used for going to ski resorts and driving in snow in winter, camping in summer and going off road when I go do photography in difficult to reach places and for long journeys. The BMW is simply used as a short commuter and for blasting around the mountain roads as it handles way better than the Prado as one would expect. It is also much cheaper to run so good as a daily driver. Two totally different cars for two totally different purposes. I enjoy both cars but in totally different ways.
The hood flexes because it’s made of aluminium. Also you pressing the front bumper, and saying it’s shoddy build quality. Pretty much all vehicles have plastic front bumpers. This is simply how all modern cars are built including the X5 which you chose not to press the front bumper in the video. There are regulations and rules that says a cars front bumper have to withstand a bump at low speed and absorb that bump without bending. Also front bumpers have to be compatible with pedestrian crashes.
Just out of curiosity: wouldn´t it be (engine wise) more correct to compare the LC300 with the X5 xdrive 40d, considering that the 40d comes with an actual twin turbo set-up and not the twin scroll set-up? Because then the comparison would be about two 5 seat SUVs with 6-cylinder twin-turbo diesel engines? And then I think the prize-point will also change, since the 40d is somewhat more expensive than the 30d. Otherwise a very cool comparison!!!
This was a good comparison of two very different cars, each one is unique and best in class, though I do think the LC ZX is not the best LC version for all round practicality on & off road. Sauce testers missed towing test which is why 8/10 caravan owners choose a LC
Toyota V6 engine is not up to towing, Hot V design is flawed. Bmw with the tow pack is 10 the better tow vehicle, reliable ZF 8 speed an engine combination.. Do some proper research. There is no comparison with these two cars.. A jacked up Camry that is ridiculously overpriced vs a proper SUV built by one of the best car companies in the world. How anyone would spend 150k on that pile of shit is baffling. Toyota fan boys need to wake up
@@lewiev7560maybe not this LC, but everyone knows the “old” Land Cruiser V8 diesel is bassicly the best and most reliable towing car, there’s a saying: you go into the dessert with a Land Rover and a Land Cruiser will het you out

Why no comments on the BMW suspension type? Was it the air suspension? Its way comfier and you can raise and lower the car. There is a newer engine for the BMW X5 in Europe with the Mild Hybrid included and produces more HP and Torque (286 and 650). Maybe not available on all markets...
I’ll buy x5, here’s why, they’ve topped customer satisfaction for last 4 years in the same list Toyota is 7th place. X5 has b58 straight 6 arguably the best modern engine which is reliable(even new toyota Supra uses it). X5 has Split tailgate when street parked you need less space to open it. Comparatively new infotainment, makes hassle free driving while listening to your wirelessly connected devices, Extended moonroof gives a less cluster phobic experience to second row passengers, cabin insulation, safety and highway cruising. Most importantly we should admit that none of us are taking any of these vehicles on off-roading. No question about selling unless anything breaks. All this BMW being unreliable shit comes from people who do untasteful modifications that can happen to Toyotas too, the difference is the age, income group buying these brands and their driving habits. I had a Honda for 10 years and a BMW for 8, both saved me from multiple small, serious accidents and required no to minimal repairs(good build quality) other than routine services.
That was the most pointless review I have ever seen. The Sahara ZX & the X5 are two different cars built for different purposes. Whilst the ZX is the "road going model" it definitely is not driver focussed, it's an off-road & tow vehicle. BMW prides itself on driving dynamics, and that still translates to their SUV ranges. Whilst the X5 is big, it's basically a big car/wagon and it has no place being compared to a 4WD. I don't think anyone in the market for an X5 actively drives a Cruiser for comparison, they are more likely to compare it to a GLE. Even the Rangie Sport and Discovery don't really compare to the X5 due to them being luxury off-road models, they compare more to the Sahara ZX. Nice try but anyone with minimal car knowledge knows that the review was highly flawed from the get go.
I have both. I prefer the X5 anyway. The BMW technology and comfort is second to none. Don’t get me wrong the Landcruiser is good, but it’s nothing compared to the BMW. The BMW’s technology is unparalleled and is something magical. The Landcruiser is good for off-road, but that is where is excels.
Technology in bmw is something very very recent…. The 2017-2018 bimmers still had the regular instrument gauge and all bmws had cheap quality scratchy plastic interiors. Comfort of Bmw is absolutely trash and that’s widely accepted. I had bmws myself ranging from 1 series to x5; both comfort and tech is not something bmw sells upon

My 2nd x5. I do like them because mileage is much better and I could find one. I really like four runner but gas mileage and couldn’t find one. Land Cruiser also couldn’t find. Toyota better gas mileage and able to find then woulda been a competitor. Can’t knock x5 though. They are nice

Interesting comparison. I bought the US base LC V8 in 2020 and love it for all the rugged and legendary style and durability. I also wanted a performance SUV and bought the smaller X3 in 2021. Love and appreciate them both for different reasons!
It should've been LC300 vs X7 or Prado vs X5 right?
Agreed
X5 is wider and as long as a 300
I own the X5 30d as tested and have spent a day withe a Prado and I can tell you that comparison would not have ended well for the Prado. The Prado is a significant compromise
I like both for very different reasons. I love BMWs, but if I want an off roader I’d get a LandCruiser. If I want a nice daily family car, X5 (with the optional 3rd row) is my choice
Buy that's the thing. They not comparable. They made for different situations
I dont even know why this two were compared,
they are totaly different league.
BMWs will now automatically indicate after the company gave up on trying to get the owners to use the indicators.
I agree with you. Also I don’t see what Lexus is thinking when they sell the 200k lx600. Do they want to be like G400d?
At 100,000kms, the Landcruiser would have just broken in. The X5 would likely had its gearbox replaced, dashboard lighted up like a Christmas tree a few times and suspension squeeking all over

Land cruiser competes with the x 7 not x5
Is the Landcruiser flapping bonnet a no cost option?

If I get a nice warranty with the BMW id get that and sell it once it runs out. The Toyota barely needs the warranty lmao
What’s the point of having the warranty when it breaks down consistently during the warranty period? Isn’t that giving owners the fear of the BMW breaking down when they are expected to perform?
@@yslee1401 the point is that I don't have to pay for repairs and I get a loan car too

Reliable means not spending make it reliable reliable means no need spend make it reliable
Forget both POS's and buy a Y62 Patrol instead. V8 power and a real 4WD in one!
After Renault & Carlos Ghosn, Nissan is perpetually crippled
If you can put up with the worst interior in history.
If you had added towing test, results would be different. Luxury, technology and driving dynamics X5 wins, everything else LC will eat it.
You forgot reliability mate.
BMW has decent reliablity and Toyota reliability is not free, it is overpriced at least 50%
Agreed, I must say that the the reviewer is pretty unprofessional in making such a remark without deep diving into the material usage first
TOYOTA!! There is no substitute.........
Otherwise a very cool comparison!!!
this is like comparing chalk and cheese
Combined makes a delicious sandwich 🥪
You forgot to add expected reliability and re-sale value...The Toyota will win over the X5.
Why no comments on the BMW suspension type? Was it the air suspension? Its way comfier and you can raise and lower the car. There is a newer engine for the BMW X5 in Europe with the Mild Hybrid included and produces more HP and Torque (286 and 650). Maybe not available on all markets...
guess you should have compared the LC300 to a BMW X7 to make it much fair that is if we are not considering pricing
That just goes to show that the X5 is way overpriced for its dimension segment
BMW x5 is not competition to truth 4wd vehicles !!!!
Both class leaders in their own respects.
