One other comment if I may - I went from a LC100 V8 to the new 300 GR-S. The 100 pulled the van like it wasn't there, but I noticed that the 300 was more susceptible to the "tail-wagging-the-dog" thing. I think it's to do with the fact that the V6 engine is about 100Kg lighter than the big V8 was, and although we have a bull bar on the front (as we did with the V8 too), that lighter front end makes the car more sensitive to the van motion. The solution? I put air bags in the rear coils of the 300 just for leveling up, but the biggest improvement came when we installed an Oz Glide on the draw bar of the van. Incredible the difference that made. It decouples the van motion from the car. Best buck for buck money we spent on the whole setup. I have no affiliation with Oz Glide, just one of the many very happy users. They're made here in Queensland, too, on the Sunny Coast.

Great video Reuben and an epic tow test.
I have been following the new 300 since launch and would love to own one, though as you said, it is certainly on the pricey side, even for the base model.
I have never owned a 4WD, though I have taken the 300 Sahara for a test drive and was super impressed with the power on tap and delivery through the 10 speed auto. It really surprised me with the get up and go, certainly nothing like other diesel cars I have ridden in. I love what you guys do at DMW and the adventures you have with Shaun and the boy's. One day I look forward to bringing in a 300 series Cruiser for you to work your magic and give it the full DMW treatment.
Love your work and keep the videos flowing. 👍👍

Hi Mate, I have driven a 2014 and 2018 200 series for the last 8 years and just taken delivery of my new 300. The real difference with my experience and yours are mine have all been GX spec.
The fist one was kept std with a little ARB protection gear on it only. The 2018 one we did the GVM upgrade with Old man emu remote shocks, bigger wheels and lots of protection gear.
It drove and performed so much better than the first one and towed our 3.4 tonne van so we’ll, without the need to use the stabilisers.
Coming from these to the GX 300 is like a game changer, it actually has buttons on the steering wheel 😋.
I love it and the drive is so much better, as you know there is no approved GVM upgrade available right now, but I’m told there will be very soon.
I really enjoyed your towing test video and being a Toyota man, I think money for value at the GX level, now that Toyota have put some fruit on it, it is much better that the Y62 in so many ways and worth a good look before spending over $100k. David.

Couple of things about your hitching-up procedure though. On my GR Sport, it wouldn't let me back up to the drawbar - until I turned off the rear park brake assist function that's designed to stop you backing into a wall or another car in the car park. Button near the right knee solved that one. Second, although you crossed your chains, they're pretty slack so probably wouldn't hold the nose of the van up if the tow hitch came undone, as you rightly say. Looks like they're a few links too long, to me. And lastly - you left one wire dangling - looked like the cable for the rear camera on the caravan. We have the Safety Dave on the back of our van, and that cable is essential if you want to see who's directly behind the van, rather than waiting for a bend in the road so the towing mirrors might get a glimpse of them. Speaking of towing mirrors - where are they?

The real test for this new car is to go to central Australia and tow the van in 48 deg heat to check the heat soak of the hot V design. Thanks for the test, very interesting. I have a LC200(last model before DPF). I have done 235,000 faultless Km. Not a squeak, rattle leak or anything else. Just what I expect from a Toyota. I tow a 19' 6" van that was also towed previously by my 120 series Prado. Until recently I used stabiliser bars on the cruiser/van combo. I found that the 185kg load on the towball left the nose of the cruiser pointing a little bit skyward. You could clearly see it when you hooked up the van. I ended up putting ARB shocks(not the ones with the remote reservoirs) and springs all round(200kg I believe). Made a world of difference to the standard setup when towing. I could get rid of those bloody stabiliser setup on the van. Yippeee! However, for me, the the ride when not towing has degraded. It is a more harsh ride and maybe a fraction noisier(but I have no proof of that). Off roading is definitely better now, but I don't do a lot of off-roading anyway, so it is not such a loss.
But it is a trade off I am prepared to accept I am prepared to accept because it tows beautifully now. It was good before too but I had to hookup that stabiliser setup each time I connected to the van. When you think about it, 200kw out of a 4.5L V8 engine is pretty ordinary, but the torque which come in so low(not like the Y62) is excellent. A solution is perhaps to get it reprogrammed and an exhaust, but for most upping the power of your donk is not the reason you buy a Toyota. You buy a Toyota because after you've done your 300, 400, 500.000 km and it has been looked after(serviced) there is a real good chance it will be still running fine. Just look at all the 80 series you still see running around all over the shop(and of course out on the trails). I live on the edge of the victorian high plains and the things are everywhere(not run down shit heaps, but good looking capable vehicles). As I'm sure everybody knows they came on the scene in 1990. Holy shit 33ish years ago!
I expect to get that out of mine. All while still being a very capable vehicle on and OFF road. Thanks for the great video

With normal road tyres, those slick conditions and a heavy caravan on the back, I thought the Land Cruiser 300 did well to get as far as it did! Most full-size SUVs or 4x4s these days have impressive performance. Some seem to be better than others at certain things, but they are all really very impressive in my opinion. I respect brand loyalty, but I personally prefer to choose a vehicle that best suits my particular needs and is available in the market that I am in (Japan). That would automatically rule out the Patrol as Nissan in their wisdom, have decided not to sell the Patrol (aka Safari as it was called here) since about 20 years ago. Loved this video!

I test drove the Sahara the other day and thought it seemed too firm on road. It seemed to feel every bump, and the engine seemed to always be in a lower gear - I was so surprised by this. It made me question if it’s for me. I do like a lot of the updates though.

Will be interested to see how the 300 comes out once all the mods become available.
When you say "not as good as 200 series or Y62" I would argue that if those were better stock there wouldn't have been so much of a need to modify them.
Will be very interested to see a comparison of 300 and 200 and Y62 once they're all running upgraded suspension, 33s, chassis extension and properly run in.
Nobody likes change, and for those who truly love the 200 or Y62, any change would be mostly unwelcome. When this becomes the new standard the 400 series will be criticized, just as the 200 was in its early days.
    Looking forward to seeing more

I have waited a year to make this comment, having owned three 200 series prior and now the ZX. To say your videos are informative , honest and entertaining is an understatement, just love how you say it as it is regardless, all the good and the bad. Having said that, I have owned a ZX now for a year and reflect on your thoughts to improve my vehicle to the point that it is better than the 200 in all areas, not just a few. The big thing I would have liked you to have touched on during that test and given your thoughts on, was the adaptive variable suspension the ZX actually has which is totally different to the Sahara. You totally dismissed that important feature of the car which would have given a different opinion of the outcome I could assume at the end. You have the option to choose anything from Eco, Comfort, Normal, sports, and Sports plus, which when dialled in, totally changes the damping and comfort levels as you drive. Not only does it change the dampening of the car, it also changes the throttle response as well, giving a more spritely and responsive throttle performance. The difference between modes as quite noticeable and if you would have changed the suspension settings to comfort over the rougher surfaces, I would have loved to have heard your thoughts, however you didn't even touch on that ability of the vehicle, I'm just assuming you wasn't aware of that feature at the time. You Have to also think that the ZX has a Rear torque-sensing Limited Slip Differential (LSD) which I would assume assisted you during your faster driving on slippery surfaces as well, so the difference between that and even the GR-Sports would have been vastly different given that it's set-up with front and rear diff locks with an open diff which is a disadvantage on the GR-Sport when driving on the black top particularly on slippery and rough surfaces. Thanks for the informative and insight to the ZX, it was very entertaining and honest. Good luck with the Chop, and looking forward to the improvements you make in the future. Keep it up, love it.

I am really confused by this review in regards to the handling aspects - 200 Series is a wallowing boat compared to a 300 series . I really liked the two times I have driven the 300 - it's really moved things forward in particular regarding the suspension (both drives passive- i.e. GXL and VX). I think that you are comparing very modified 200 series cruisers vs what comes out of the showroom. It may not be deliberate, maybe subconscious.... Haven't driven the Y62 but both cruisers are not close to the Discovery 4 for handling and steering feel (except for the all important reliability yes I know). I am waiting for the new Everest to be reviewed as I think that the 300 series is very over priced and the Everest has grown in all dimensions (1st March launch).

Hi , I currently own one of the last GXL 2021 LC200 with just 7000klm on the clock: With 6000klms towing a 2.7ton van. Recently I was lucky to have a loan of a Sahara 300 for 24 hours. What annoys me is that out of all the LC300 reviews I have read and seen on UA-cam, nobody comments on how noisey the new V6 motor is . It became evident as soon as I started driving. I have completed my own in cab comparison noise test under full load and acceleration with the engines getting to 4000rpm. The 200 came in at 80DCB and the 300 at 90DCB. A significant difference if you know how sound measurement works. With a ten speed gear box the engine will always be revving harder and higher and I found noise level unacceptable for a Sahara. Not to mention the bonnet shaking around on suburban roads. Please try this test for yourself with standard exhaust systems. The 300 is a good vehicle however If I Had the opportunity to clean swap vehicles, definitely no, The 200 would still be my pick hands down .
