But this is what he talks about: there are design faults from factory that you need to fix straight away. take the transmission for example. it stays in 5th gear and wont go into 6th! this is a common problem. when doing 100 on a dead flat road you're lucky if it goes into 6th. the torque converter slips. holding 5th gear creates alot of heat in the gearbox which burns your oil and leads to premature wear if not changed more regularly. especially if you towing. On-top of this though the biggest red flag from factory is the airbox! it doesnt even seal properly. its a known problem at taking in dust. people have had dust in their engines and had to get complete engine rebuilds. the seal and paper filters let it down at failing to stop dust getting in. Love me a land Cruiser. But a decent 100 would be preferable. Repairs are expensive because all parts are over built. Aftermarket parts are almost never as good as toyota ones. Great car, but people do romanticise it too much.
Have you driven both side by side? Like night and day the 200 is a far better vehicle. Unless you want live axles, then you can't compare as they are a different thing.
@@MichaelOsseweyeijer Absolutely, I sold my 105 and bought a new 200 series. It was the worst decision of my life. I had 4 years of constant issues with the 200 series. It was by far the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned. Toyota were also hopeless and didn't want to cover warranty issues. I will never buy another new Toyota now based on my experience.
Another thing to look for is water in the carpets, it's usually a sign of blocked sunroof drains which can cause corroded junction boxes in both A pillars or damaged modules that are near those junction boxes.

RUST! Yes there's plenty out there with rust. Most owners that go fourby driving don't clean underneath but the rust underneath is not the worst of the rust problems. At my mates smash repairs, these are their bread & butter jobs. Rust happens on the turret (roof), tailgate & where the tailgate sits, rear side windows & worst of all, the front windscreen and A pillar. These are not easy jobs to repair as trim has to come out & that takes time to remove. If your buying one, check these areas very closely if they have been repaired & find out if it was done in the backyard or a proper repair shop. A repair shop will use metal & weld it whereas the backyarders will use bog. Underneath the chassis mainly get surface rust but I've seen some bad ones so make sure the chassis has been repaired properly. Use a good brand of underbody rust protector. A funny story that happened a couple of years ago when a customer bought a 200 series cheap. Underneath was all fine but there was rust around the windscreen, A pillar & turret. He wanted it repaired & a full body respray. He wanted it in a weeks time so it was all hands on deck. When it was finished, it was like it came from the showroom floor. The customer paid & went on his way. A week later the customer came back. The 200 series had scratches all over it & wanted repaired under warranty. We found out he took it off road & of course twigs, branches & rocks scratched the crap out of it. When we told him that it can't be done as it was used off road, he got angry & we told him & it was even on the invoice that the paint warranty would be void if the vehicle was taken off road. We gave it a buff (we didn't have to but it only helped a bit) but he also had some panel damage due to his off road excursion. If you're buying one, take your time & go over it carefully before outlaying any cash!
I have a couple of cars i would love you to review, a 2010 petrol Prado Kakadu 175,000k and a 2002 Lexus SC430 convertible 110,000k both cars are in great condition, trouble is l am 6 hours from Sydney. I love your reviews.
I thought you was taking the piss with that comment but shit a brick, it servicing schedule is the same as the Space Shuttle. All journalists want to compare a LC to a RR, two completely different buying dynamics for two completely use of the vehicle.
I think you guys have just made a lot of people happy and a lot very angry lol. I disagree with you Adam that the 200 is worse looking than a Land Rover but as you always say it's ok to be wrong 😂. When you said the GX is the workhorse of the line or miner & Taliban spec does that mean GX stands for guns and excavation? Lol The bush ballad would've been more convincing if you had been wearing boots instead of sneakers lol. Did we just hear Hullsy say that a way of sorting a problem is to do a naught? 🤔 I guess we must of misheard what he was saying 😂. Great job guys as always and as always keep up the good work and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍.

For the non-hardcore off-roaders, there is GREAT value to be found in LEXUS LX used market. For some reason, folk don't seem to understand the quality that Lexus adds to the experience. Love mine and saved a fortune compared to the stupidly overpriced 200s. Do thousands of km on dirt and it's so damn comfortable.
I bought a 100 series in Lexus trim in 1998 with 170k on the clock. It is now 345k, with no sign of wear and minimal maintenance. It's the only truck I couldn't break. When I bought it, the dealer told me not to repeat his mistake and buy the 200 series (my 100 was his personal vehicle, which he "upgraded").
My dad has one and they are a fantastic tow vehicle, especially with the transmission lock mod. But if you aren't towing heavy loads, then there are way better choices out there IMO.
the value of my 2011 200 series nearly doubled after I bought it here in NZ, Toyota activly trying to buy them back for customers, only issue I have had with mine was cracked rad top tank, love it!
Great video and some really useful unbiased technical advice. And yes My previous 4wd was a cruiser I bought new. My current vehicle has exceeded expectations but its now 10 years old. I have been exploring all the options and there really is only one choice.
Wow, all those mechanical problems makes me want to stay with Mitsubishi Triton. According to Jim Hull, not much goes wrong with them. I have one and it's true for me too. I'm doing more research for a tow vehicle. Maybe the brand new one will be good.
Please note that although the diesel was available for the whole world, North America only got the gas engines and although thirsty, just as bulletproof. We miss the 300 series in America
If you get a diesel engine, even Hondas and Mazdas (especially Mazda) will have issues. Stick to their petrol engines and you'll be fine. Thankfully in my part of the world we don't do diesel engines in SUVs and small cars.
@@damilolaakanniMazda diesel, yeah they’re crap and always have been. Luckily their new ute is Isuzu based because the 2.2 Mazda6/CX5 diesel is junk. The diesels that Honda do are actually pretty good.
My brother has one, been everywhere with it towing a house behind him, all good. He always says to me that I should sell my Range Rover as I hardly drive it, well I do when its running, but then tomorrow arrives.
Fantastic vehicle for towing and that's why I own one. I bought a 2021 GX new with 10 years Toyota warranty and I will trade/sell it before that runs out. The VX is the model to go for but I couldn't find a new one for sale in 2021 so I opted for the GX. Terrible headlights in fact they are dangerous, the GPS is best described as being hopeless, the stereo system is the worst in any car I have owned, no aircon in the back seat area means having to turn the fan to a higher setting in the front and no proximity cameras at all make parking in shopping centres a nightmare. I tried a Nissan Y62 but not enough legroom in the front for me which is a shame because they were so much cheaper at the time ($25K). If I didn't own a caravan I would buy a Prado.
Met a grey nomad last year, doing a lap in his 200 series diesel with van in tow. During his trip his engine died due to the poorly designed airbox and dusting. New long motor from Toyota + install cost him $40k! 😲😲😲 How can such an expensive vehicle, with such a perceived reputation for quality, suffer these kind of issues..... Another under-cooked design from Toyota. Toyota should be redesigning and retrofitting improved airboxes into all of these vehicles. But they won't. And people still line up to buy these things at ridiculous prices...... 🤦♂️
Its incorrect that 2012 is needed for bluetooth. I have bluetooth calls in my 2007 sahara, and its possible to fit a Vais bluetooth module in the back of the factory head unit too for music. Its also incorrect that 2009 models are needed for rear view cameras. I have one on my 2007 Sahara.
Nice comments from the mechanic... it will be great if during the explanations, an image or a short clip would be added so for those like me, could easyly identify the parts to look at...overall great job guys...
Lexus LX570 interiors are nicer. Seats are also more supportive (driver's has thigh support). On the used market, here in the USA, LX570's go about $10,000 USD LESS than LC200 (Toyota tax). I took my LX570 to Moab, Utah and rocked all the trails Jeeps and Broncos were on. Only mods I did were LC200 wheels and Bridgestone KO2s. LX has height adjustable suspension so I could raise up when needed.
We only get parallel import over here and it cost around half a million while at the same time the average salary is 2.5k. I hate how skewed the pricing of cars where I'm from
Don’t believe those who say the KDSS is essential or even that it makes that much of a difference. I have 2020 GXL and a friend has a 2018 Sahara. They both have the same suspension upgrades and I think the difference in the handling is minor at best. The lack of KDSS is one of the reasons I chose the GXL over a VX. I valued the simplicity and reliability of the normal anti roll bars.
That's not an issue, it's a way of protecting 5th and 6th gears. Pretty much all transmissions in most cars, anything over 4th gear is an overdrive. Being an overdrive, it overloads the transmission components and cal lead to over heating and/or failure. Not so common these days, but once apon a time was a critical issue.
So. Can anyone tell me a genuine reason to own one of these? I think I’ve heard every “reason”, so I’ll give you bonus points if you can give me a new one. The only reason I think anyone should buy one of these monstrosities, is literally if they personally like it more than every other option.
Most second fuel filters are 20-30 micron and factory filter is reportedly 5 microns. I replace the factory every 10 k when the oil& oil filter is replaced.
Have you told Chris how you feel about him? Has he called you back? Sometimes you need to focus on yourself and find inner happiness first before others will be attracted to an unemployed bold subjective researcher
I don’t understand why so many off-roaders and utes have the front sitting so much lower than the back. Or is the back jacked up? Not sure… either way it looks a bit silly.
I guess that makes sense… kinda. It just means that for 99.9% of the time, when there’s no heavy load being towed that the car is sitting at an awkward angle. And does that angle make handling ‘worse’?
@alex98b627 with the rear high it makes the weight bias shift forward affecting steering especially under braking. You're right though alot of people jack up the rear when they don't really need to because they only tow a caravan a couple of times a year.
Can't complain about mine not one thing, my wife thinks it's the best car I've bought her and she's owns gtrs mustangs alot of goof cars and she loves this 200 the best

Lol Jim the mechanic’s section would be like 3/4 of the video! The phrase “feeble engine bay plastics” would get a thrashing! Still, they’re easy to DIY and loads of fun. Buy one. I’ve had 3 in the past and always keep an eye out for a nice one.

This has to be one of the longest what goes wrong mechanically segment
For a Toyota certainly. I'm sure the Range Rovers was far longer.
Ford Everest wins that.
I thought you was taking the piss with that comment but shit a brick, it servicing schedule is the same as the Space Shuttle.
All journalists want to compare a LC to a RR, two completely different buying dynamics for two completely use of the vehicle.
So you haven’t watched the CRAPTIVA video
@@AWMJoeyjoejoe it was :)
Lol
The bush ballad would've been more convincing if you had been wearing boots instead of sneakers lol.
Did we just hear Hullsy say that a way of sorting a problem is to do a naught? 🤔 I guess we must of misheard what he was saying 😂.
Great job guys as always and as always keep up the good work and look forward to next week's videos as per usual 👍.
Adam, Louis here from STA FM, Inverell: it's 4x4 country up here! Just wondering if you and Jim are up for an on-air interview on my show? Let me know!
Shhhhh!!!!!!
@@tcmx712 you're right, I should sshhh...
Those that know, know
They are ugly though......
The main reason would be because is was offered mostly as a petrol v8 only...
@@gixxr88it has the same v8 diesel in australia and most right hand drive countries.
About time for this one!
Hehe, nah, I love surprising people while towing my camper trailer.......they are like: 'This bloke will die on the hills....' yeah, nah.
I've had my 2020 gxl from new. 51k so far and no issues at all. It's had an engine tune, trans remap, etc, at 3k.
It's a great tough vehicle
Finally! Good on you guys
As I'm approaching my 40th I'm starting to seriously consider these for some reason. Owning sports cars are getting less appealing.

40th birthday

@@mrgarrison3516 40th birthday hahahah. Imagine 40th girlfriend though, that's an expensive habit.
the value of my 2011 200 series nearly doubled after I bought it here in NZ, Toyota activly trying to buy them back for customers, only issue I have had with mine was cracked rad top tank, love it!
6:15 if toyota was the first to released the crawl control in 2008. Why did the 2005 discovery 3 have it🤔🤔
Some Toyota's actually hv plenty of issues. Their claimed dependability is often overblown.
Mazda's, Honda's are often better, long term..
There is another class action just kicked off against Toyota Australia, they lost the previous class action with the hilux issues
If you need one it’s a good Truck
But otherwise a waste of a lot of money
My brother has one, been everywhere with it towing a house behind him, all good. He always says to me that I should sell my Range Rover as I hardly drive it, well I do when its running, but then tomorrow arrives.
Can you please do the Lexus LX 470 and LX 570? Wondering if they're only cheaper because of the Hydraulic suspension. Thanks!
@Redriven does this apply to the Lexus LX of the same generation or is it different enough for its own video?
How can such an expensive vehicle, with such a perceived reputation for quality, suffer these kind of issues.....
Channeling Russell Coight. Good work.
Nice comments from the mechanic... it will be great if during the explanations, an image or a short clip would be added so for those like me, could easyly identify the parts to look at...overall great job guys...
The vacuum pump (that Jim mentioned) does not provide vacuum for the brakes. It provides vacuum for the active engine mounts.
I was wondering about that, mine has electric/hydro assist brakes.
Sure about that?
Interior Hardly changed since the late 90s
Best car ever. (alongside with Prado)
Guys, the Year 2000 Discovery 2 had hydraulic roll control with anti sway bar disconnect at low speeds. Thank god Toyo finally got the update.
Yes but the Discovery only lasted until 2003.
Love his humours reviews
its a awesome unbeatable 4X4 but also they have held their value so much which makes it very hard for people get one for a good price
Best car ever!!
Funny your comment about Chris Hemsworth…he actually drives a black 200 series. See him driving around in it every now and then
Nice bit of Woollarding during the safety segment there Adam.
I’d get a base 300 series with a better set of tires.
Please do the landcruiser cygnus (Lx470).... many say it rivals the early 200 series in many aspects
Hello, when will you create a feature on the legendary LandCruiser 80 Series? just asking for a friend :)
Was there any mention of the 5th and 6th gear unable to lock in a gear towing issue that this car has that it is known for?
That's not an issue, it's a way of protecting 5th and 6th gears.
Pretty much all transmissions in most cars, anything over 4th gear is an overdrive. Being an overdrive, it overloads the transmission components and cal lead to over heating and/or failure.
Not so common these days, but once apon a time was a critical issue.
Love your reveiws. I wish there were more mechanics like Jim. I am lucky to have a good one. Aussi Les
He's not a mechanics arse !!!!!
I like how you rhymed side with side in your ballad.
So. Can anyone tell me a genuine reason to own one of these? I think I’ve heard every “reason”, so I’ll give you bonus points if you can give me a new one. The only reason I think anyone should buy one of these monstrosities, is literally if they personally like it more than every other option.
Did I miss the running costs/consumption section? Been looking forward to it.
Can you please make a video about the g class w463 ?!
@REDRIVEN Do you guys have the Chevrolet Avalanche "pickup"? I'd love to see you review one. They seem very undervalued here in Germany.
100% on the self confidence one, gold!
Woohoo! Been waiting for this one 🤩
Come on Mate you are a very good Mechanic. A secondary 5 or 2 Micron Fuel Filter makes a MASSIVE difference on longevity of the Pump & Injectors
Most second fuel filters are 20-30 micron and factory filter is reportedly 5 microns. I replace the factory every 10 k when the oil& oil filter is replaced.
Is that an iteration of a Seiko Marinemaster on your wrist?
Have you told Chris how you feel about him? Has he called you back? Sometimes you need to focus on yourself and find inner happiness first before others will be attracted to an unemployed bold subjective researcher
the 200 series uses more fuel towing than a v8 patrol--- i know as i have both
Interesting. Cheers
I don’t understand why so many off-roaders and utes have the front sitting so much lower than the back. Or is the back jacked up? Not sure… either way it looks a bit silly.
It's for towing, when there's a heavy load on the rear it levels the car improving handling
@@tcmx712 And then there is Carolina 'country' 🤣
I prefer the older models myself, but I'd also rather a 90s 3 door Rav 4 with a lift kit & skid plates.

But beware if it hasn’t been sorted (recently, and you want to see receipts of work done), there’s a massive laundry list of things that are normally worn out or broken and need replacing, they’re all nearly 30 year old cars now.
If money was no obstacle I’d build a coupe with a turbo K24 mounted way back, I like the way the 4 cylinder E36’s turn in and feel compared to the 6 cylinder models, but they’re not powerful enough.
