MSFS 2020 | TUTORIAL: VOR Approaches in the Working Title Cessna Citation CJ4

  • Following on from our complete lesson on how to fly the CJ4 ( • MSFS 2020 | TUTORIAL: ... ), Working Title developer Matt returns to teach me how to fly VOR approaches in it. We're using v0.11.1 of the WT CJ4 mod.
    We fly the VOR Z approach to Runway 06 at Rhodes Diagoras airport twice - first as an FMS-coupled approach, then manually, using just the VOR beacons and a chart.

    Here are some tips from real aviation: you must be stabilised upon reaching 1000 feet in vmc (1500 in imc), that means your plane should be configured for landing (gear down, flaps landing position, speed is no more than Vapp +10kts, and not less then Vref, VS no more than 1000 ft/m, cdi deviation no more than 1,5 dot scale and landing checklist must be completed). if not stabilised - Go Around.
    Also, prior 15 mins upon TOD start your descend and landing briefing: weather, star and approach charts (radios, courses, minimums, go around procedure), landing config and speeds, fuel remains, how much time you have to hold in case of weather, and where you gonna hold, alternate deviation in case you expect to go there.

      Also a good tip of when you have to be configured for landing: let say in ILS, 1,5 dot gear down flaps 15 (if not yet), 1 dot - flaps 35 checklist. It relevant in case you have a low FAF at 2000ft, otherwise like if youre going to intercept ils in constant descend drop gear and flaps15 at 2500 ft, 35 at 2000 ft.
      Btw im not a cj4pilot, im a Q400 CFI, but those tips are relevant for any aircraft you fly. Cheers!

      And!!! Always, always keep your heading bug sync to your present heading. A/P making a turn - sync, other turn - sync. Thats bc if you need to disconnect your NAV for HDG mode you will always keep your present heading, and not turning unexpecting somewhere else.

      Thanks for the tips. Very useful. I am hopeless at remembering to sync my heading bug. I've been flying the A320 too much! This video does probably show some of my worst flying though. I wish you had come across one of my others instead! 😁

    great tut as always. but you need to look at the vertical profile chart on the manual VOR approach, in order to check your current DME and alt to fit the minimus given on the vertical profile on the chart. check your alt+dme, compare the chart, adjust V/S if necessary. if you stick to that, the speed and recommended V/S is a guidance. check out the LOC/DME east approach in LOWI/Innsbruck. if you don't stick to the minimums and youre too low you say hi to our beautiful mountains. regards.

    Excellent tutorial thank you. Do you know any way to adjust the altitude preselector by 100? Mine inc/decs by 1000 but randomly by 100. It can’t make its mind up!

      It's to do with the speed you scroll your mouse wheel at. It's very fiddly but if you scroll slowly it should change in 100s and if you scroll quickly it should change in 1000s.

      The mouse wheel speed didn’t work for me but I found that the first left click changes by 1000 but holding the button down then changes (fast) by 100s. This is applicable to the CJ4. The C172 has a double knob - outer for 1000, inner for 100.

    Hang on. At 11:21 You tuned a 2nd vor, but what was the point in tuning the initial vor? It wasn't used was it?

      You're right, it wasn't actively used because we were following the FMS guidance, but it's good practice to tune in the VORs in case you lose GPS signal or something else goes wrong.

    Hello Filbert, just to reproduce exactly the fly could you suggest the departure airport? May be you just took off from Rhodes and turned around?

      Yes, if I remember rightly that is what we did. There may even have been some slewing involved.

    How can I install the Working Title mod? I download the projecto from Github and when extract, there is a folder called "fspackages-main" is that one the one I need to put inside my community folder?

      You must have downloaded the wrong thing - source code rather than the release, I reckon. Download workingtitle-cj4-v0.12.1.zip from this page github.com/Working-Title-MSFS-Mods/fspackages/releases/tag/cj4-v0.12.1 and just drag the workingtitle-aircraft-cj4 folder into your community folder.

    This isnt exactly a tutorial. Seeing many actions and clicks without any real explanation of whats going on or why.

      It's a tutorial on how to fly a VOR approach in the CJ4. It teaches you how to fly a VOR approach in the CJ4. It does assume you have an understanding of what a VOR approach is, so perhaps it would be fairer to say it was not the tutorial you were looking for rather than "it's not exactly a tutorial".

      @@FilbertFlies I know what a VOR approach is. It was still alot of conversation or clicks and actions without commentary vs. actually explaining what to do in this particular aircraft.
