Thanks again for another informative video. In my quest to learn more about flying in MSFS, I have been focusing on learning to fly IFR procedures with the Garmin G1000 in various aircraft. But I have found that using a flight computer and the autopilot somehow takes away the pure fun of flying. And for that reason I have enjoyed your videos because they encourage me to get back to flying just for fun.

I just watched this video again. Very good instruction as usual. I love your teaching style. I would like to point out one item at time cue 6:43. What you refer to as the compass is actually a heading indicator. They are two different instruments that essentially give the same information--the direction of flight. The compass is magnetic and reacts to the Earth's magnetic field. Though it indicates magnetic headings, the heading indicator is not magnetic. It works using a gyroscope. This distinction becomes important if you have the MSFS Assistant Option of gyroscope drift turned on in your game settings. In the real world gyroscopes drift or proceed. Part of the pre flight checklist, while parked or at a full stop short of the runway, is to set the heading indicator to agree with the magnetic compass. Once airborne; while in level, non-turning, non-accelerating flight; the pilot needs to periodically check to make sure the heading indicator and the compass still agree with each other. This is important because compasses are affected by forces of acceleration and only give accurate readings when the aircraft is in complete balance with respect to those forces (level unaccelerated flight or parked). Gyroscopes maintain their alignment during aircraft maneuvers such as climbs, descents and turns. However, over time they proceed and their heading accuracy falls off. One should keep this in mind when practicing non-GPS type of navigation.

Thanks for another useful guide. I guess that rather than reset the OBS button to centre the vertical bearing line, another option is simply to fly toward that direction till it comes central and to keep doing so? I also want to try setting up both Nav receivers with standbys pre-loaded to navigate in sequence between 2 or more VORs in a longer flight or more complicated route. Ken
Hi Ken, you would have to adjust the OBS knob somewhat to aim it in the general direction of the VOR. Setting up multiple frequencies sounds like an excellent idea.
I think it's interesting that the CDI line that you follow, is actually the same as the central green/pink line on the other Garmin glass display compasses. You just don't have the 'ends' of the lines that you have on those.
Another excellent tutorial vid, Sir HUD. Makes me want to jump back into the C152 and fly some VORs. Even though the cockpit lighting is now nerfed. Lol.
Nicely done. Very helpful. Were you using Heading (HDG) mode, to keep you on those radials? and...Would HDG mode be considered "Using the Autopilot"? Thanks.
Thanks for this, I'm considering purchasing Microsoft flight simulator for Xbox series X (can't afford PC) and i like the idea of having a go at VOR to VOR flying using NAV instruments rather than GPS navigation. I assume you don't have to select an option to allow this in the SIM, you just get in the cockpit and set your target VOR frequency on NAV1 and then take off?

There are 2 VOR dials in the C152 and yes, you can use them both independently. I only used the top one to simplify this demonstration. Switch between Nav1/2 to use each one.

Having trouble with NDBs when flying the 152 and beechcraft V, I'm tuning to the right frequency, ADF selected, airbourne and in range but the needle doesn't budge, mostly I'm flying around the Midlands and north of England - are these beacons not working, or am I doing something wrong? Ah of course! I could have checked the Morse... Seems that some of the NDBs in the UK that appear on Navigraph are not there in the sim, whether this is because on real life they have gone, or just weren't ever in game I don't know. Thanks for the help! It's much more enjoyable navigating the old fashioned way!
So when yoi turn the cdi know to center the needle, does that tell you the heading you need to fly? I'm confused because I would think you would need to change heading until you intersect the radial, thus centering the needle

@@Huddison I have checked your videos twice and have done exactly as you mention but the only VOR that works in my Cessna 152, is the VOR you mention in your video, from Birmingham to 113.65. Tried also other airports in UK as well as Holland to fly to this same VOR but the CDI does not react. I hope you can help me with this.

As long as you know your local VOR frequencies, then you are able do fly in this fashion with just the Base Sim (on Xbox or PC).
