If you like ironman but you don't want to go through as much of the grind, I highly recommend playing the seasonal Leagues game modes. It's basically ironman with tons of small achievements along the way giving you points towards overpowered buffs and XP/drop rate multipliers. I play a main but it was a fantastic way to try out ironman for a few months

I recently started playing RuneScape. I enjoyed it so much that I was playing on my phone at my families 4th of July gathering here in the states. My dad saw me playing- long story short, me and my father (born in 1966) have been playing and are now both quickly approaching 1,000 total skill. I love this game.

Even after all this time I still have so much I'd like to do in the game. If I remember where I left off I was trying to get the pet from phantom muspah and intermittently doing slayer tasks when I'm bored of bossing or crafting blood runes while watching TV if I'm just trying to chill out. Absolutely love the game, will probably play it off and on for the rest of my life, evidence being that I'm 30 now and I started playing back when I was in grade school and had to go to my local library to play for 30min at a time with my friends xD

I started playing old school runescape in 2016... I have never played runescape as a kid and was only introduced to it by a friend in college. Having poured thousands upon thousands of hours since 2016, i can say that nostalgia has NOTHING to do with OSRS success. This game, as you said, is timeless BECAUSE of its core mechanics of leveling/questing/PVM. Its brutal drop system of gear upgrades, ironman or not, make it very addicting for the fact that at any moment you get a crazy drop or sick pet. The feeling of "just one more" for the chance of something youve been searching for is ingrained within the fabric of the gameplay which i have not felt from any other game or mmo. As someone with 1500+ Cox kc with no olmlet, surely the next raid will be the one! Happy scaping all my nerds and welcome to all of the new players that give this beauty of a game a shot! :)

Very good point! In OSRS you gamble your time rather than your real life money. The chance to score big whether you’re an ironman or a main with a game changing drop is absolutely addicting. Everyone has different rng and different experiences with going dry or getting lucky at different bosses. This is a big part of what defines the player experience in osrs and it makes every person’s playthrough unique to some degree :)

Your point "If you don't play an ironman the fact you can buy and sell bonds for GP kinda devalues the feeling of item progression" is a decent point but let me introduce you to the Collection Log. The collection log can provide you a similar feeling of item progression to Ironman while not being locked behind massive grinds for meta items and missing out on awesome MMO aspects of the game like Full Loot PVP of the Wilderness or certain group bosses. Plus the OSRS team teased cosmetics to flex your collection log progress.

For those that are migrating from other MMOs like WoW and are worried that it's "too late to start"... Don't worry even a little bit. This is the type of game you can literally put down for years, come back later and pick up where you left off, with no issues. New content almost never makes old content irrelevant. It's not like WoW where you have to rush to the end-game in order to have stuff to do.

    • @Daktyl198
      @Daktyl198 5 місяців тому +9

new content not making old content irrelevant is kinda false. E.g. traditional skilling has almost entirely been replaced by other methods. Additionally new bosses come out sometimes which changes the balance of gear/etc.

    • @FSAPOJake

@@Daktyl198 You can hop on right now and 95% of the content in the game will be viable.

@@FSAPOJake You can still do it, it doesn't mean it's relevant. The XP difference is just night and day. Same with the additional modes of training for all other skills lol. Doesn't mean I don't like the game, just saying that statement was a bit false.

    • @FSAPOJake
      @FSAPOJake 5 місяців тому +22

@@Daktyl198 There's a big difference between a meta taking over another, and content literally not being doable because it's dead and was replaced by newer content. For example, in WoW, there are countless dungeons and raids where it is completely impossible to find anyone unless you go on forums or Reddit or something. Also, most weapons and armor in the game is worthless since it gets replaced by new stuff every time an expansion releases.
The only content in OSRS that is dead like this is maybe old minigames like Trouble Brewing, and some armor that has never been relevant even back when it released, like splitbark. Otherwise, 95% of the content in the game is doable with zero issues.

To elaborate a bit on some points TLP already made:
Quests are actual stories. They sometimes start mysterious or even mundane and before you know it, you're following a quest line that alters how certain areas operate. Every quest progresses your account in meaningful ways: Unlocking new content, gear, areas, ... and many of these are worthwhile to get. Some quest rewards from the middle game are so useful that they can only be upgraded when your account is nearing max level or if you amassed enough wealth/gear to buy/hunt the upgrade. This means they are relevant for 100's if not 1000's of hours.
Another overlooked fact is that middle game content remains relevant: Getting full graceful or full void is something that mid level accounts go for and still use for end game content. Getting your first fire cape or doing barrows runs are early to mid game objectives, but are still main objectives 15 years later and in the case of barrows also nets you decent profit.
Most content can be done without having the best gear, it's more difficult or your trips are shorter, but it still can be done. Gear progression near end game is also very horizontal focused. The devs are careful when it comes to power creep and usually, new gear will fit a certain niche to make certain activities more efficient. When the Alchemical Hydra boss was introduced, they added a drop that upgraded an item from lower level content (Zamorakian Hasta) and after combining them: the new item was only good against dragon-type enemies. Not only did this make melee vs dragons more efficient, they also made the zamorakian hasta a more important weapon, including the boss that dropped it.
Also, there's an insane amount of humour in the game: Look up the names of the white knights in Falador as an example. There are so many easter eggs or references to pop culture and/or other games.
The last thing I want to touch upon is: Whatever activity you do or like, it always progresses your account in a meaningful way: Let's take the minigames as an example (as I already talked about quests earlier) They have unique drops that are useful at all levels and even if you don't get a drop, you still gain experience in the skills that you use to complete/play them.

Anyway, within two months before I had to focus on my studies I was 20 days of game time deep, like 1600 total level and the next big quest for me was song of the elves. I never got back to my main character due to life getting in the way, but I just started a group ironman with some friends which is slowly consuming more and more of my life.

Started playing OSRS late last year for the first time, played for a little while on a standard account then quickly switched to Ironman mode and have been absolutely hooked since. Most fun I have had in a game in years, and the feeling of constant progression (especially on an ironman where every upgrade feels like a huge deal) has been amazing and something I no longer feel when playing most games.

I've just started playing OSRS last month because of Soup's Gielinor Games series - I've never played an MMO in my life. I made an Iron man account and I am loving it so far! I love puzzle and adventure games usually and I absolutely adore all of the quest content in this game. I just finished the frog quest in Varlamore and laughed the whole time. And the fact that you need to put in work to get the necessary skills makes the progression through the "story" to feel really satisfying as well. Maybe I'll go for a quest cape!

I would argue that OSRS is currently in it's 'golden age'. if anyone played the game as a kid, back in '05 or so, you won't recognize the game anymore. The nostalgia from the graphics is still there, casting the home tele and spawning in Lumbridge still hits home, but almost everything else has changed. There are new continents, countless quality of life upgrades and consistent updates being pushed.
With the quality of life upgrades, the game is more accessible than ever. That said, I would argue that going in to the game blind would be an incredibly fun experience for someone new. The quest guide can help, but please take the couple of minutes to read through the quest dialogue. It might not make sense at first, but the quest lines are so well interconnected that you will start drawing connections and look like Charlie from IASIP in no time.
The player base can be very welcoming, but scams are still rampant. Like Peon, if you play an ironman you can pretty much avoid all scams as you cannot trade with other players. There are new low-level bosses and gear that make progression more consistent. Soon into playing you will search for that next upgrade, which will require you to level up a skill, which will be easier if you complete some quests, which need skills to be levelled etc. You can really run yourself down a rabbit hole, but it is not as intimidating as it seems. All progress is saved, so hopping on for 10 minutes, running a couple laps of an agility course for 5k xp will get you that much closer to 99 the next time you log in.
Also, there are seasonal events called 'Leagues' that come up once a year or so. These have increased xp rates, new challenges, rewards and can be an easy way to get familiar with the game or content you can't currently complete on your main.
Sorry for the rant, I will go back to runecrafting now. Happy Scaping.

It’s never “too late” to start OSRS because that isn’t a concept in this game. In WoW or traditional MMOs you can fall behind because of the content cycles they use. In OSRS 99% of the content is evergreen and will never get outdated, at least not to the degree that a raid gets outdated in WoW when the next one comes out.
I never played OSRS growing up so I don’t have the nostalgia factor that others have, i was a WoW guy, but I started OSRS in 2017ish and I’ve played ever since.

Made an Ironman myself 3 months ago, and already have 33 days in game! The progression in this game is so rewarding and noticable, and honestly super good content whatever "phase" your character is in at the moment. I'd highly reccomend finding a clan to join! I myself is in an ironman clan, and we do a lot of content together, and are very supportive of eachother when we get cool drops and milestones.

  • @umarrii

I think something interesting to highlight is how ironman changes the game completely. For example, the entire aspect of being behind from just starting now becomes irrelevant because you're basically playing as a solo player. You can't be behind when it's just you. Other issues like bots are much less of an issue too, since as an ironman, you can't trade and their impact on the economy doesn't impact you at all.

No matter what type of game mode you play, runescape is rewarding. You can get out as much as you put in. Want to be sweaty? There are methods for that. Want to click something once and go and have a shit whilst gaining XP? There are also methods for that. Over 10k hours I've put into this game, it's definitely my comfort zone. Would 1000% recommend. I've been playing OSRS since 2004 and I've never gotten the chance to enjoy end game content because I just don't have enough time dedicate to it. However, I'm ok with that because I feel like OSRS is one of the very few games that is still fun in early/mid game and I don't really feel left out just being a noob. The rewards and leveling process is just so addicting and casual friendly that I've always just enjoyed the ride and have never been worried about rushing to end game content and I wish more MMO's were like that.

I didn't play back in the day and started in 2021/22 due to the amazing content creators. OSRS has objectively amazing game design, and anyone who thinks it's success is thanks to nostalgia has no idea what they are talking about.
Nostalgia might get some players to give the game a try again. But the core game design and amazing breakpoint progression system keeps them playing. One video that goes in depth on this game design is a video essay by Marstead on "Why Runescape is not an MMO". Definitely give that one a watch if you are interested in what makes OSRS special in the MMO genre.

This is your best video on osrs one thing I would like to add is that yes bonds can devalue items however you still need endgame quests and lvls to even equipped alot of best in alot gear some best in alot gear is even locked behind extremely hard content such as inferno for infernal cape the Colosseum for the best range cape slot and mage arena 2 for the best magic cape globes are locked behind grandmaster quests certain rings ect. So it's still less pay to win than any other mmo even on a normal character

I started again a couple months ago. Was one of the first 1000 players in 2001 (still have the character under a different name) Been having a blast! The questing is awesome, the grindy aspects are easy, and the content creation surrounding OSRS is insane! J1mmy, Settled, Framed, TorvestaRS... Some of the stuff these guys make are amazing and scream talent. Plus the OSRS team have added a ton of awesome features, quests, and are involved in the community. You can invest as much or as little into the game and still have fun, with mini games, quests, etc and if you wanna buy a Member Token to speed up grinds you can (I limited myself to one lol, still have ton more gold just from that and already almost 1k skill cap. But I play mostly for quests etc.) The mobile version is solid for grinds, the RL client is awesome, I could go on. Highly recommend.

Nearly 20 year rs veteran here. While I understand the basics of osrs combat are incredibly simple and some modern gamers can find them off-putting, it always cracks me up when someone says the combat is boring/doesn't require skill. I'm average at best at PVM, and it blows my mind what kind of things people like Rendi, PortKhazard etc are able to do by abusing the combat system. Like, show people the video of the lvl3 fire cape, or supply-less inferno or awakened dt2 bosses. If that sh*t doesn't take skill, I don't know what does.
