Norcold N300-3 RV Refrigerator: Troubleshooting on Gas

- My Norcold N300 stopped working on gas/LP. This video explains how the thermocouple, interrupter, main switch and safety valve/solenoid work together.
My problem was that it may or may not stay lit...mainly NOT. I had several problem areas. My thermocouple was weak and not producing the proper amount of millivolts. I replaced it (link below). After replacing the thermocouple the problem continued. In the end, I had to replace the Safety Valve assembly. That solved the problem of lighting and maintaining the flame.
I also had to replace the main thermostat control valve as well. The spark ignitor also failed and had to be replaced.
Thankfully, now the unit works perfectly!

Great narrative, you described the problem and the function very well. Mine works well on AC but only marginally on LP gas. Good luck with it!
If it's working properly on ac, and marginal on gas, then you typically have one of two problems. The burner is Rusted and partially stopped up and not making enough Heat or that combined with the twister in the flu being Caked Up with soot. If the flame has been out of sorts for a long time, it will create smoke and that suit collects on the twisty thing inside the flu. You would remove that from the top of the flu. You can order a new burner online from Amazon for about 40 bucks. Make sure you order the correct number. There are several of them that look identical but the mounting position is different.
thanks for the video it gives me hope that I can fix ours without having to buy a new fridge, same model as yours. Our flame stays lit, a little quirky getting it gong but then it stays. The trouble is the fridge doesnt get cold anymore... do you think simply replacing the safety valve will fix that ? thanks again
If the flame is staying lit, then your safety valve is working. Also if it is working on AC and not very good on gas, then you either need to clean or replace the burner.
My n302 gets hot on gas and eletric. (Good flame) But the fridge doesnt get cold at all. Cant see any yellowish leak anywhere. The fridge baffles are properly alighned to direct air through coils properly. But nothing gets anything old even if left on for hours
If the gas are electric elements are reaching proper operating temperature and the coolant is hot as it needs to be, then your problem is probably related to the actual coils not making proper contact with the cooling fins and such. This uses a thick heavy thermalastic to join the two together over time, that mastic will get dry, hard and crack and will no longer transfer the coal to the proper parts. Good luck!
Well, I have a (very) little knowledge of electronics, so I followed your explanation with no problems. Actually, you explained it very well. That valve is just an electromagnet, as you know. And, I imagine that they can fail, from time to time. But, I wonder if it was in an area where it was exposed to some of the heat from the flash fires. If so, maybe the insulation on the wire winding was melted, causing the short. I am sure that you will be posting your solution...
I removed the little electromagnet/solenoid. There were no signs of any type of heat damage. I think it just failed. I was fortunate to find another valve. Thanks for the input!
@@Flyboytr did your new valve fix it?
I have same problem. Did you get parts from Norcold or ?
Tom,
Obviously you did NOT read the video description. It contains links for all the parts I have replaced. Please read...good luck.
I would really like to know any updates on this I have the same problem
I had to end up replacing the entire safety valve. The electromagnetic valve inside that is powered by the millivolts had failed. Please read my description of this video and there are details there. Thanks for the question.!
