Episode 2: Sequencing drums and melodies using LFOs

- Not many synths have a mod sequencer like the Korg MS-2000 (demonstrated in Episode 1). But that doesn't mean you can't use LFOs to trigger drumbeats and melodies.
This video features an ESQ-1. While it has a sequencer, it doesn't have an arpeggiator, or any decent internal drum sounds, and certainly no way to key-trigger those sequences. This tutorial will show how to get decent drums and even simulate an arpeggiator, all dynamically triggered via the keyboard.
Plus, the techniques are relevant to almost any synthesizer. - Навчання та стиль
i appreciate you took the time to feed the audio directly into the computer vs. a microphone. As you say, the ESQ is truly under rated... or under-discovered. I uncovered all the little treasures and nuances of the ESQ years ago, and it's refreshing to see someone reveal the old tricks to the new generation. I would like to see more videos on the ESQ details of osc. selection, routing options, the lesser known PWM-emulated sync trick... audio panning, etc... Thanks for the memories!
Fuck, you rule. My first synth was an ESQ-1, sitting in a closet in another country...time to get it back. I actually looked up a tutorial on my MS-2000, glad I found this.
Amazing job.
Your videos continue to be of benefit - what a contribution to this industry you bring. Excellent presentation, voice and animations and instruction flow.
Although this video is intended for use with real synths, it opens a whole range of possibilities with analog modeled vst-synths too.
I'm having a go at the vst-version of the Korg MS20 and polysix as well as an FM synth i recently discovered.
It's been a while but i hope you will post more interesting videos.
They're much better than most and give great insight into the possibilities of synthesis.
Thank you very much William, and happy new year to you too!
Cheers!
Excellent information! I own and old ESQ-1 "POS" and I love the ease in programming and the ability to cover old synth sounds. I can think of a couple old Rush songs where this may come in handy. "The Weapon" from Rush's Signals album comes to mind.
I really wish you could find a way to get back to making these synthesis tutorials. You are spot on, to the point, and it is a joy to watch. I get the feeling life got in you way (kids and all?) but even one video a month (or a quarter) would be so awesome! :(
please more of you and ur awesome knowledge!
Again a very nice idea! The ESQ-1 sounds really nice....one of my favorite synths!
That last song you played was "Legion" by VNV Nation. Cool
I watched the MS2000 video and noticed the sounds you were getting. Some reminded me of the sounds Trent Reznor gets.
I really can't say anything that hasn't already been said, you're awesome with synths. You must have spent years experimenting with sound.
Wow. This is a really great & interesting video. I've learned a lot about modulation. Thanks for posting it.
Love the ESQ1. Easy to program and includes a sequencer in the box. do wish it had knobs for adjustment, but oh well.
Eecellent stuff man!
Very well explained..
Can't wait for the next one~!
Wow, these vids are just amazing man, keep them coming :).
Super valuable info! Thanks for sharing :)
Hi Willian, thanks for share this amazing video, please keep this great tutorials!
Greetings!
Very clean-cut and informative. Thanks! ;D
Excellent work. You're a thinker from outside the board. :-)
I take back what I said about the ESQ 1! I guess when I was younger and had one I didn't scratch the surface. I'll be searching EBay I think for a little retro fun!
excellent video!
I remember my ESQ-1... my first synth. I wondered how some of thoes third party patches sounded so much like an arp. makes me miss my recently sold SQ80.. :(
Holy shit! Thanks, dude! I am now very curious if I can take this new info to craft some interesting stuff with my Korg Triton - all the presets are so gawd-awful on that thing.
KILLER acid bass at 6:38.
MMM. so tasty. Like breakfast for the soul!
Nice job calling the ESQ a POS! Then you use it throughout your video to show how really flexible the synth really is with 3 LFO's and built to withstand a atom bomb.
One of the still underrated synth sof all time with so much to offer a creative musician.
Next time hold up a Casio CZ101 when you want to call a piece of gear a POS! Great vid btw.y
Very nicely layed out and educational!
How about doing a simular video on FM synthesis, using for example the Yamaha DX-series?
Perfect!!Nice VNV song at the end.R u a fan of industrial??
Grt vids!!!
Bravo!
WOW Awesome!!
very interesting - your tutorials open new horizons (also liked the "piece of sh..." part very much ;))
u are awesome dude
Fantastic stuff. I really like this kind of synthesis, but is there a cheap begineer's synthesiser out there that can do virtual patching as powerful as the ESQ-1? I really would like to know where I can start looking for cheap synthesisers of this type.
I would like something with 3 VCOs with individual filters and modulation so that I can do stuff like this.
So..... when is the book coming out? You should do one. I'd buy it for sure.
How many videos are in this series and why is it so difficult to find them?
korg ms2000 video plz on sequencer, tips
I am looking for a modeling polyphonic synth but I do not want mini keys, what do you suggest, my budget is $1400.00. I am technically savvy on electronic and mechanical.
Quick question - I don't know much about your technical knowledge about the esq1 but I'm dealing with a little problem here (at least for me it's a problem). The filter appears to be inconsistent, as in when I press the same key, the cutoff level appears to change just a little bit in a repeating sequence. Calibrating the filters didn't do much good to fix this. Also the numbers that show up during the calibrating process vary between 148 and 152. Is this normal or is my esq starting to go south? Do you have an idea what might be going on?
Change the batteries.
Hi
i have a korg ms 2000
i need hepl
i need tutorial how to make a secuence fron Pink Floyd on the run
Pleaseeeeeeee!!! help me
i dont understance the mod sequence im novate
Thank you
The CZ-101 is awesome. A Yamaha Portasound or Casio Casiotone would be better for that.
for anyone using the transoniq hacker lfo tables I think the tempos are wrong, for example the setting s for sync at 113 bpm are way out, I get more like 117.3, go work em out, peace
'like, this piece of shi..."
Perfect example of the lost art of Synth Programming, and yet another example of why Ensoniq keyboards will never be beat...
wow sell me that moog lead patch
And then at the end he says how good the ESQ is.
The ESQ really was a piece of shit :) But alot of fun to bang around on!
Is it still
