Inside Synthesis EP1: Turn an analog modelling synth into a drum machine (2007)

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- This is the first episode of Inside Synthesis, updated higher quality video, audio, and graphics. It's a tutorial on how program a Korg MS-2000 to function as a 16 step drum machine, while still being able to play bass and lead lines over it.
This is one of the best videos on synthesis on youtube. Ever!
What happened to you? Your are so talented! I thought by now you'd be all over UA-cam? Sonic state other programs? So many new products have come out since I've seen a video from you? I'm a fan I think I know you should be putting out content! And reviewing and demo synths!
I agree with you. This guy had the best synthesis videos on UA-cam. He had an uncanny insight into synthesis. I heard that he died. I heard he got married had a kid and something happened and he died. I hope I'm wrong. I honestly do
Hey man, made a video with similar ideas on my Rev2 and linked to your video in the description. Hope that's cool!
This video was monumental to my early synth learning! Great stuff.
Hmm... noob lesson-learned: If your arp is not working, you may have midi clock set to external w/ no midi traffic. Set it to internal.
awesome ! i take my MS2000R out of the auction and will hold it because of this vid :-)
To many hipster mono snobs giving this synth a bad reputation because they can't figure it out :-)
Refreshing to see someone experienced demo some of the MS2000's capabilities.
Once this "second wave" gets educated, maybe synth makers will start innovating again. We have enough mono-synths now to span the Milky Way.
Yes I had on in 2000, sold it unfortunately in 08 but what a fantastic little synth. Very capable, much like the microkorg and king korg, most people hating on them just have never owned or never bothered to figure them out. More fool them
Very cool stuff. And you're hot, so that's icing on the cake.
Well done. Proving once again that these preset-oriented synths have much more potential if you go under the covers and dig.
could this be THE MOST underrated synth of the past 20 years?!?!? GOtta get one!
UPDATE: ...........GOT ONE......LOVE IT!!!
Brian Taylor how you finding it?
Andre Brown Love it! It sits atop my OB-6 and gets way more attention. Unique sound and lots of knobs and it LOOKS cool🤷🏽♂️What more could you ask for from a synth?
Andre Brown not to mention how easy the Patchbase iOS app makes editing and saving patches.
Brian Taylor Wow, ok glad to know how relevant the synth still is! May look into one myself prices arnt bad compared to modern Synths.
Ah the power of knowledge!
Thanks for the tutorial!
I wonder if there is a way to disable any of the steps in the sequencer ? I've read the documentation, but could not find any mention of it.
Oh my goodness! Do you have a full length version of that tune you played at the end? It's pure Gold. It's so beautiful... That last part just got me... right there... =')
WHOA. Okay, this is just astonishing.
Best Tutorial ive ever seen for the MS
Thanks to this video, I had a real proper 'aha' moment with my Nord Lead 4 tonight. Holy moly. Please make more videos and unload your vast synth knowledge. Start a Patreon and I'll pledge $100 a month!
William,
I used this vid to turn ALchemy VST into a drum machine.
SO many of the new analogs dont fit the bill for doing this. None have sinewaves. I was thinking of getting an Evolver, no sine though.
@FlametopFred .. Hey Fred, thats the beauty of the MS2000... crap specs, no ego, but an awesome synth at a great price...$300ish on Ebay!
I just order this synth online today - geeze, I have so much to learn before i get to start making any real music on this thing!!!! :(
@wax83 very nice. doesnt feel tackey. just very simple and plain feel. the keys arnt weighted or anything haha..
I saw this video first time on Sonic State a while ago and I still love it, it's a very cool example on how to approach synthesis in a smart way and approach what first appears to be limitations in such a way that the end result is something really unique and flexible as well.
just recently got my hands on a ms2000...can you please tell me how to get the tempo to sync to my DAW. i have it connected via midi and can see it in my daw and can also change the patches. I just cant get the arp to work in sync.
only quibble is with your "first step" ... the first step is to get a job so you have money to buy all that great gear : )
Thanks a lot for this demo...I will be using this technique live very soon with my band..Slurpy gloop
i just got an prophet and can only agree, it's great, but no sine wave is a shame
How does the keybed feels on the ms2k - anyone who's "lucky" enough to have one?
Yea bit that's just one patch so you have to effect the whole patch. You can't just put a reverb on the kick 😎
can i do this thing on a ms2000r using an external midi keyboard?
Help me i can not do the drums like you with wich preset Do you start
Which preset do you start on? or how do you edit to utility like you say at the start?
This tutorial is as awesome as those blonde tips.
That was very very cool indeed.
Excellent, more tuto like this, please :-)
how did you get those bigass side panels?
Fantastic Tutorial,
the best I have seen, how to unlock the secrets of your gear, WOW !!!
Excellent tutorial... very clean and to the point, I like the way you edit your videos. Learning a lot from your talent. Thank you.
I swear that you are doing something that I just can't see. I can get a kick and snare but once you tell us to send the second kbd track to the noise level everything just turns to shit. The kick becomes inaudible. Also is there supposed to be notes playing with the snares or just noise? Sometimes noise isn't even present, or it's inconsistent. I barely know how to explain what's happening, there's just so many weird subtle things that happen and I don't know what going on. Maybe my synth is broken
I would like to say that you are the greatest synth teacher I've ever seen. You are clear, dynamic, and interesting all time. You have full knowledge of your matter and you have the ability to transfer it with fun. I've teached electronics in the past but I don't think I'm 20% of your talent. Thank you for sharing.
Where are you from ?
Wow, this is an awesome tutorial !!! Just bought a MS 2000r ;-) Is it possible to get the patches from your sets ?
You had way too much time on your hands. Very impressive how you figured all this out. This Yas to he one of the most programmable vintage-ish VA synths
You should do this for a living.
I guess you do, eh? :)
Great, great tutorial. I'll try to do this on my microkorg now *lol* :)
I can't believe this only has a little over 6K views as of writing. This is one of the more useful synth tips on youtube!
Very cool for only 4 polyphony, I must try this, like the control on the snare...
Very cool stuff ! Watched till the end and I dont even own an MS2000
Does anyone have anyone have any tips on how to create a glockenspiel/xylophone patch? I need one for gigs and am having a hard time
Simple things that open your mind. Thanks!
Awesome thanks dude!
Amazing
The best instructional synthesis video I have seen so far. Very interesting and inspiring! Thank you!
Hell yeah
your videos are great and very informative! well done and please post more!
Brilliant and so inspiring! BUT how on earth did you make that patch right at the end: ua-cam.com/video/gipTFNhniMo/v-deo.html - I can get so close to imitating it but cannot quite get the oscillator to produce that major third harmonic (presumably from the resonance)... Please please please share that patch ! :-x
It’s been 10 years, so I don’t remember exactly, but it sounds like I had hard sync on and patched in additional key tracking. This made the synced oscillator the same pitch as the main oscillator on the right-hand side of the keyboard, while up to two octaves above it on the right, giving it that classic sync sound for the lead.
@@insidesynthesis thanks ! I shall see if i can get it spot on !
Wicked Vid going to try this on my MS2000...
This Ozzie thanks you very much!!
Excellent video, would love to see more about the MS2000 specifically.
Shit!!!! This is a great programming that you just have made!!!
This is genius. He even set up a step sequencer for the drums.
You Really should consider selling a Bank of these!! :)
Great video thanks for the guidance
cool synth - great demo. good work. rad vid. cheers
Were you ever in the demo/C64/Amiga tracker scene?
Fantastic tip man, Im going to try this on my DSI tempest.
Glad I found this video again... Lost all my favorites.
Wow and wow! Love that tune at the end, so so cool!
Picking mine up tomorrow!
this tutorial is extremely helpful!
dude, you are a freaking genius!!!
The release trick is so freaking sweet.
Thanks for sharing your skills!
Very interesting demo!
