The ESQ-1 was the first synth I ever owned. Ensoniq factory was right down the street from me in PA. They made great sounding innovative synths. I wish they were still around.
how cool . hope you still own it. have now one for 3 years and i get bored by the sound of the juno 6 cause the esq 1 has a fresh character in my opinion
Bought mine 20 years ago for $5 from a charity secondhand store. Because these don’t come with inbuilt speakers they thought it was faulty (no sound coming out of it). This demo has woken me up to the true possibilities of the legendary ESQ-1.
It is a beautiful and constantly surprising synth. It also happens to have one hell of an amazing sequencer built inside, though no one uses it anymore. It was far ahead of its time.
I retired from teaching 4th & 5th grade two years ago (2017), but for the last 28 years that I taught, I wrote lyrics to original holiday songs together with my classes as a language activity, and used my ESQ-1's sequencer to write the sound track... and I'm really NOT a keyboardist -- I play guitar and bass, and some other folk instruments, but can't work both hands at once on a keyboard! The sequencer allowed me to do a melody line, add harmony, bass, and embellishments, and layer together something that sounded good; then I used my vintage Roland drum machine.. My class recorded our song through the public school's radio station, and they played it first, every year, in their lineup over the holidays. So I LOVE the sequencer in the ESQ-1!
Very very very nice patches here. To my ears it's a perfect illustration of what esq1 has to offer. Will get that fantastic patches soon for sure. Well done and thanks a lot for sharing. Peace
I LOVE this synthesiser! It sounds as if an analogue and a PPG Wave had a child! My best friend used to own one and lent it to me for a long time. I really had trouble giving it back! Of course the SQ-80 is fantastic too, an ESQ-1 with more waves and the polyphonic aftertouch keyboard. If only Ensoniq had survived...I know Creative bought them out but kind of ran the brand down. A complete shame I reckon. I've actually got a VFX SD-1 myself- a great sounding board, if unreliable...but if only it had resonant filters... man that would have been a huge improvement! The filters on this baby definitely sounded the business! Great video! I recognized a couple of classic songs in pieces of your playing...;-)
They will not be forgotten. Ensoniq is gone but they will not be forgotten. They made their mark on the world and did a great service to humanity, and decades later... still discovering, realizing and turn back in amazement.. but they are gone
Eh I wouldn't say it sounds *better* than a Minilogue, just different (though there are some obvious feature differences that make the Ensoniq ESQ-1 technically "better." But I'm biased since the Minilogue was my very first synth. :)
It was my second synth 1987 and I still think of it warmly as my very best one. Its flexible possibilities for modulation, analog filter and very well chosen set of waves to choose from… Yummy!
I have a soft spot for underrated synths and the esq1 is one of my favorite synths I've ever owned. Same with the Korg dw8000. Good thing is it keeps the prices low for synths that handily outperform synths selling for more than 5 or 6 times the price. Excellent patches here. Same with your korg set(really showcases its strengths)
these paches are top quality, ive got an sq80, had the esq-1 years back, my sq is poorly but you clearly know how to program this machine, its really friendly to program from the front panel I always found:)
I have an SQ-80 and I will never sell that thing. I bought the 16-Bank ROM Cartridge for it off Ebay and it's fantastic for those interested in additional sounds. The sounds in this video are top notch as usual. I may have to pick these up. Thank you!!
4:07 that synth bass is probably hottest thing I ever heard in my life . It sounds like a stereotypical 80s horror saw wave bass but it's so much more then that!
Just wanted to say thanks for these beautiful patches! A few years ago a friend asked if I wanted his old Ensoniq ESQ-1 synthesizer. He just used it on a piano setting for songwriting, but he was pretty sure it was capable of much more. Yours was the first video I looked up, and less than a minute in I responded and told my friend that yes, I absolutely would love the synth! Since then, the music my wife and I create has shifted dramatically to be much more electronic in nature. These patches you've expertly crafted are woven all throughout our music. Thank you again for the inspiration and keep up the great work!
What everybody forgets to talk about is how intuitive the user interface of the esq1 was. It was so easy to get quick results . Never saw such a logical layout before or after the esq1 , also not with Ensoniq boards
@@AnalogAudio1 not really, the Esq user interface was very visual as well. It showed you the signal flow. Vfx and ts10 don’t have that, plus they are more complicated as well
This was our workhorse for many years. It has a kick-ass sequencer that we cut our teeth on before we discovered Opcode's Vision for our Mac SE. Vision and Digital Vision (the first to incorporate digital audio on a computer) was purchased by the Gibson Guitar Company and left to DIE!!!!! Screw Gibson Corporation! This synth however, was a beautiful instrument! Especially after Vision introduced the Librarian/Editor for it which screwed with merging the ESQ patches together to produce some truly otherworldly sounds. Its an amazing synth, a digital hybrid.

I'm looking at getting either, I like that the SQ80 has a floppy drive, but have read that the ESQ1 may just be a tad more "grittier" analog sounding, which I'd prefer. Thanks!
I one talked to a keyboard tech about the ESQ-1 and the SQ-80. He said that the oscillators on the ESQ had more aliasing which contributed to the character. Having played both, is this something that you can confirm?
SiliconBassist no that’s not true. They share the same single cycle 8bit samples and filter. The only difference on the SQ80 is more samples to choose from, a floppy drive, and a different paint job with more buttons for new saving functions.
I noticed that you have published demos for both ESQ-1 and the SQ-80. In your experience, is there any difference tonally between the two? I owned an SQ80 years ago and have spent some time with an ESQ-1, and I do have a sneaking suspicion that the ESQ has a little more low-end meat to it, but that could be my imagination.
@Love made in Japan not quite. SQ80 has polyphonic aftertouch, which is a huge difference in expression. and has parameters to govern that modulation. also it has few extra waveforms that ESQ does not have. tho it can be modded to have them. and it has floppy to save patches and sequences. with that said, i had both, and noticed that output equalisation circuit (present on the schematic) is different on SQ80, making it much brighter. but less present in the mids. in the end i sold my SQ80 and preferred the tonality of ESQ1.

The ESQ-1 had an amazing sequencer. It was the best thing before Vision came along for the MacIntosh. If you used the scrambling functions in Vision on the ESQ-1, you would end up with incredible voices that you wouldn't be able to program on your own. The preset voices on the ESQ-1 were superb to begin with. Once you started messing with them, they only got better.
The ESQ-1 sequencer is good, but tricky to use. The best "pattern based" sequencer was "Notator/Creator" from C-LAB for Atari ST in my opinion. You could do everything - and a lot more than on other pattern based sequencers. And it was easy to use, fast workflow. No other pattern sequencer comes close (MPC, MMT, ESQ). But it could only MIDI, it is best for studio work, not for live.
Definitely. I should have written "before software sequencers." Once software sequencers happened there was no going back to an old ESQ.We used the ESQ-1 sequencer (and it worked very well) before we started using "Vision" on the Mac. After that folded we went over to "Performer/Digital Performer" which( I think) was originally "Notator" back in the Atari days before MOTU bought up C-LAB and re-packaged it for the Mac..

no. Just with ESQ-1, ESQ-M and SQ-80. The SQR is the rack module of the SQ-1/2, which is some kind of downgraded VFX, a completely different piece of kit...
Great demo. Did you add some EQ? There seems to be more high-end in this than on my ESQ-1, and I am wondering if the patches would sound as good on my ESQ-1. Cheers.
Oscar Vargas of course the SQ-80, since it's an enhanced version of the ESQ-1. But the keyboard feel is like the later Ensoniqs - like VFX, EPS16 plus, I like it personally.
AnalogAudio1 I just bought it! I'm now waiting for it to arrive. I am really interested in buying patches, how would I go about importing these into a SQ80?
This bank is simply amazing! It's highly useful and I would recommend for anybody looking for these hard to come by vintage analog strings and pads! Perhaps the best bank of these type of sounds have ever heard anywhere. Shame Esq-1 don't come with a simple FX delay and so on. I have request for you to make a bank with these category of sounds for the infamous Roland JD-800/990 series which is a hybrid as well. The one utilizing the 'vintage board expansion' would be super nice :)
Came to check this out since I read that Per from Roxette used this on “The Look” and hoped that those snare drum sounds were on here. Anyone know what he used for those?
Revolutions is an original album as well. Oxygene came out 1976, Ensoniq was established in 1984. JMJ used an Eminent organ for these Oxygene pads. But the ESQ-1 does a good impersonation
Did you have the plastic or metal version? I'm considering buying a plastic version right now but might wait until a good deal on the metal version pops up.
Do you want these patches (sounds) for your ESQ-1 or SQ-80? You can buy these patches. Read the video description for details.

Oscar Vargas with the patches I provide exact instructions. But you also can consult the manual.
Better sounds than the SQ1 that I owned
indeed, the SQ-1 has nothing to do with the ESQ-1
@@AnalogAudio1 Chalk and cheese
do they work with the Arturia plugin?
When that plugin accepts original sysex files, then yes. I don't know.
Dumb question, but would I need a secondary cart to save these patches to?
no. The sounds load into the internal memory, as on every other synth.
6:56 is this an original sequence or is it part of a song?
your demo motivated me to get one. the pads are stuningly haunting. thinking of selling my dw8000 now
they sound completely different.
+ElenaDiakova thanks! The JD-800/JD-990 are fully digital. I have the JD-990, but not the JD-800.
Finally!
Came to check this out since I read that Per from Roxette used this on “The Look” and hoped that those snare drum sounds were on here. Anyone know what he used for those?
what's for sure, he didn't use it for drums
AnalogAudio1 ok, thanks. The hunt continues
@7:20 Shiverzzzzzzz
Do you still sell these? The link for the sq80 sounds isn’t working
Of course I still sell them... I need every penny in Corona times. I fixed the link, thank you for letting me know.
Love the JMJ examples. DId he really use this board?
not personally, but it is heard on the REVOLUTIONS album, the ESQ was played by Dominique Perrier. This stands in the booklet...
I have always listened to the original album. I believe JMJ released OXy before the Ensonique.
Revolutions is an original album as well. Oxygene came out 1976, Ensoniq was established in 1984. JMJ used an Eminent organ for these Oxygene pads. But the ESQ-1 does a good impersonation
Nerds!!
Hello, could it be possible to use those sound in a Ensoniq SQ-1? Thanks
No, the SQ-1 is a completely different synth. It's some kind of scaled down VFX.
0:50 "Forever Young" pad.
Hellź yes
I remember this one, nice sounding but the build was a bit cheap and it felt cheap but the sound was very warm and punchy like the Roland JX's.
Did you have the plastic or metal version? I'm considering buying a plastic version right now but might wait until a good deal on the metal version pops up.
Bradley Hove buy it regardless. All Ensoniq keyboards are solidly constructed.
The first metal version was built like a Sherman tank. I bought mine in 1986 and still works fine
@@bradleyhove4177i dont know I got one in 2021 and its great. And the module also. I have both.
@@bradleyhove4177doesn’t matter its an excellent synth , I have one and the module as well as several other Ensoniqs. They are all great.
Are these patches still available for purchase?
Of course, if you want to buy, drop me an email, see description
😍
Is there a name for that melody at 6:55? Sounds familiar..
it is familiar to me as well. I don't know :-D
reminds me of open your eyes by asia
I thought these sounds could only be loaded from the cartridges. they can also be loaded via midi?
of course! Via sysex
AnalogAudio1 how large are the files? Can they small enough to go on to a 3.5 floppy or no?
less than 8 kilobytes
Also can you please recommend the best PC sysex dump program?
Thanks
MIDI-OX
Does the Ensoniq esq-1 need a cartridge to operate?
no
@@AnalogAudio1 Thanks
great sounding synth, never seen one in real live. not very populair here, wonder why.
love this synth. cold but warm but cold as ice
