Realness Level 1000: “I’m already regretting my decisions because I already know that as soon as July 1st hits, the rainbow’ll be gone. You know, I want to be like all of those corporations out there and go back to business as usual.”
I’ve worked in a bookstore for 20 years - spent every day there making sure everything was in the right genre, alpha by author and alpha by series and title within each other - so a rainbow shelf HURTS my soul sooooo much. Yes - it looks “pretty” but I just can’t do it. And I hate not being able to see my series together, and god forbid trying to find a specific title if you can’t remember the spine colour! Kudos to those who do this and can find anything. 🎉💜
@@GavinReadsItAll I have a rainbow shelf, but I'm also assisted by my excellent photographic memory and I remember exactly where every book on the shelf is at any one time. I even remember books that are hidden by other books or paraphernalia. A rainbow shelf is definitely not for everyone, but it works for me! xD
A couple of tips from a person who organize books by color: - colors you don’t have many books of you can make it look better by facing some of the covers out 📔📒📙📕📘📗 - I find doing the horizontal rainbow easier and more aesthetically pleasing 🏳️🌈 - I own lots of trinkets and I put them where the colors match (like the red chest would be with the red books, here horizontal rainbow would be better too) - just have fun with them! They’re purely for aesthetic so make sure you find out what makes it beautiful to YOU! 🥰 - oh! and last tip is to hide series behind a front facing cover if you don’t like to split them up! also good if you have limited shelf space
Oh nooooo! I keep cringing and covering my eyes cause you hate it so much. And because I know the struggle of rainbow shelves. It’s so frustrating and anxiety inducing. I kept looking over and going “is that really pink or is it purple? Should I move it again??”
4:03 PRO TIP: Always, always, always take a photo of your bookshelf on your phone before rearranging anything! That way, if you don't like the new arrangement, it's a little easier to put things back in order. I ALWAYS take a photo of my shelf before making ANY changes to it just in case I don't like how it turns out!
THIS. I have pictures of my colour-sorted shelves. My sister organized them and I’ll never be able to get it perfect without reference if I ever have to move.
I also did a rainbow shelf recently. I kept it that way long enough to take a picture and immediately changed it back because I can’t live with that kind of chaos in my life.
As someone who has had rainbow shelves for a few years now, here's a few tips for dealing with the ultimate stress of not wanting to split series. 1. Face out book 1 and colour code it in the line up, and put all the sequels behind it. They all fit of course. 2. Find the most common colour between the spines and put the whole series in that colour location (i.e. I put all of the throne of glass in my black section because all the spines are dark. I keep all my ADSOM books in red despite one having a white spine because the text on that book is in red). Because the spines will be in a similar style, it won't be quite as glaring 3. If there are a couple of the books in a series thay have similar colour, I will always make sure they are together and in book order regardless of colour gradient. In cases where there's more than one conflicting colour on a spine, like your purple and yellow case, I usually pick which ever colour is the most dominant. I know rainbow shelves aren't for most people but I am such a visual person that I cant find my books any other way now haha. But I have picked up a few tricks along the way so I hope this helps if anyone wants to do this
I have rainbow shelves, they have one big advantage: If you don’t have the same edition for all books in a series, it’s not that bad, because they will be split up anyway 😅 That being said, some of my favorite series are on a separate shelf, together like they should be. Also multicolored spines are the bane of my existence.
The order of your rainbow confuses me so much 😂 I also love the look of rainbow but can’t split series so I organise my standalones/books I only have of from the series in rainbow order and then organise my series by vibes 😂 The hardest part about a rainbow shelf is deciding the exact order, e.g. with blue you have to start with the greeny blues and end with the purpley blues because those colours are on either side, but you also have sort all the straight blues, with light and dark, bright and dull, all in a way that blends nicely, and you have to do that with every colour!!!
My sister is a pro at doing rainbow shelves. I used to hate the thought of splitting up series, but my colour-sorted shelves are so pleasing to my eyes. I have mostly blue, white, & black. I’m not big on warm colours, so my red/orange/yellow shelf is off to the side. Happy 🌈 Pride 🌈 Month, Gav
Oh my, I'm impressed you tried, but it might have helped if you followed rainbow order ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,violet)....I've thought about maybe doing a single shelf as rainbow but never my while collection, it would drive me crazy....🌈❤️📚
I also struggle with splitting up series and organize my books by height plus separate my hardbacks and paperbacks. However I have a shelf specifically for the majority of my queer books (series not included) and organize them in rainbow order. I think the biggest issue is you don't have them exactly in rainbow order of reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and purples. I know some people have a preference of putting the blacks and whites in different places too. Some put them at the end of the rainbow (me), others at the beginning, and the rest put one at the beginning and one the end (ex: start with white end with black)
I love the shelves Gavin!! My suggestion would be to move the books to the left so the gap is on the other side! It’s still very good! Uhhhhh make sure you film when you’re putting it back together! And add shots! I don’t know how that can work out but things are easier when alcohol is involved! Lmao
Everyone I've noticed on booktube with rainbow shelves, basically does them as color blocks, not stripes. (Shelve all the red books. Then shelve all the orange books.) I have no idea how they find anything. Even if remember what color a book is, it's usually the front cover and there's no guarantee the spine will match.
The effort it takes to change your shelves both times immediately makes you better than corporations. For most of them (esp. the higher ups, who have the most influence) they put in no effort whatsoever.
I’m kind of hoping you’ll do a scavenger hunt/tag video where you have to find something… just so we can watch you suffer 🤣🤣🤣 like a “watch me struggle to find books for my July tbr”
The 0:35 is pure gay panic, hahahah So much work, I'd give up at this point 😂 Be careful with the 🍑 or Susan will demonetize the video! hahahahah BTW: the t-shirt, I can't. hahahah
You crack me up! I agree with you, although pretty, I wouldn’t want to split up series. And I like the decorations on your shelf which don’t work with the rainbow sort. 🤔
I love how shelves arranged by color look. That said I could never arrange mine like that. It would cause me physical pain so I can appreciate how difficult this must have been for you.
My favorites shelf is rainbow but the rest are size and alphabetical. In my favorites if there are any series, I have them laying down so I can keep them in order and I go off the most prominent color.
You are so adorable. Well hell at least you gave a crack at it. Either way fun content and worth seeing your beautiful face. I've seen other creators just get random books to create their rainbows with no intention of it being readable just for pure aesthetics. Happy Pride handsome!
Gavin, I love what you've done with the place - the rainbow really brings out the chaos in you! Shelves looking groovy as always!! :) I tried a rainbow shelf - the next day I had to change it because it was confusing the absolute life out of me :) My gay brain apparently couldn't compute rainbow order haha. Happy Pride all!!🏳️🌈🌈✨
Always enjoy your energy! Rainbow shelves are so pretty, but I think you have to do one shelf with books that have spines that really fit the theme. Trying to fit all of them in is too difficult and the splitting of series would hurt me too. I really hope you took pictures of how your books were organized before :D
Yeah rainbow shelves are not for me! It makes my brain hurt! 😄 I currently have mine organized by read and unread. I'm loving being able to see the books I still need to read all on one shelf! ... Well two. They are categorized by type within each of those and series and authors together. Works for me! Happy Pride Gavin! xoxo
You just need more books to fill in the gaps.... we all need excuses to get more books right?! lol I don't know if I ever want to try a rainbow shelf, I organize by genre then author so having them all mixed up would drive me nuts. I do like how you made the rainbow span the shelves top to bottom though.
I had rainbow shelves for ages and I loved it (I don’t have a full bookcase so it was like 2 shelves of tbr in my room and 4 shelves of read in the spare room) but my friends absolutely hated looking at my shelves and finding series separate 😂 Had to switch it up cuz I had too many in weird heights but it annoyed me for ages cuz I kept looking in the wrong place for a book cuz I knew them by colour
Eleven minutes gay! obsessed. Rainbow bookshelves break my brain a bit because like you I just LOVE alphabetical order by author surname and keeping series together where they belong, but I do like the look of yours! Even if the order of your colors is definitely unique 😂. Usually it's red orange yellow green blue purple so having the green transition into purple is a choice gav, it's a choice
I am in the process of reorganising bookshelves, and hopped on youtube to get some inspiration...and found you! I couldn't stop laughing - love your humour and style :)
This was so fun to watch, but I feel for you. I always wanted rainbow shelves, but when I finally did it, I hated it. As you said, I could never find anything, and shelving new books could be a pain too. But I felt like I should love it!
I do rainbow shelves. But only with my standalone books. I have a separate shelf for series. I tried alphabetical and it was way more work because I forget the alphabet as I'm doing it
I just separate read and unread, then vaguely by genre, by height within that (tall on the left side) and if I have different versions of authors’ books they go on the same shelf in height order
I think you did well! That's a lot of work! You can always tweak it to get it where you like it! Not having everything in order would drive me juts too. So kudos to you for moving out of your comfort zone!
I admire you and everyone who does this. I just can't split up series. I am just not able to split up authors either. I tried and it lasted about two hours and then I had to put it all back to normal.

I also can't make a pretty rainbow shelf because my books arent colorfull enough. My cat Taiga loved your video too she was watching it on my sons chair.❤
i could not live with myself if i had to split up series .. 🤣🌈 .. I feel your pain - rainbow shelves look good but i am not sure how anyone finds anything
You: you can't really put trinkets on rainbow shelves Me: *organises my trinkets by colour to match the books* yes you can 😅 I love that you gave this a red hot go even tho anyway ♡
omg i just put the books on the shelves and leave it like that or they may be on the floor in piles then when i'm looking for the next in series i have to go a looking. when i saw that space on the shelves i was thinking to myself them kitties tobu and ash will be on them empty shelves in the not too distant future
I love how rainbow bookshelves look but I just couldn't stand the idea of books from the same series/author being separate from each other because they are different colours 😬
I think it looks really good and I am proud of you for trying this. I would love to see another video of you putting them back or like a live of you putting it back. As for me I don’t organize my books by rainbow or by author surname but by my brains idea of what should go together. So kinda favourites and then colours that look good together. It would never look it but it is organized and I know where everything is
I think the key is going in ROYGBIV rainbow order and not having the dark purple breaking up the bright blue and bright red/yellows. All about light to dark in my opinion
Maybe just standalones might work for the rainbow? I have never tried it, and I am on your side, I want my books in alphabetical order and my series has to be together! I like that you tried it, you are better than I am.
I've been thinking about trying to do a rainbow shelf, you have deterred me 😄
Happy Pride! 🌈

Gav has uncovered a new level of gay: using the soundtrack of Mama Mia as a unit of measuring time.
I remember my mother and I organising the bookshelf according to genres like crime and literary fiction. It made life easier.
That sounds pretty good actually, I might try sorting in genre one day
Black to purple is absolutely gorgeous! 🖤
It looks amazeballs!! Yet I know you'll want to put it back in order - and that's ooookaaayyy

This video just reminds me of how I’ll be organizing my own shelves soon because moving. 🙃
July 1 it's gonna be business as usual :D :D
Yasss I hate chaos and lack of organization too
I am always here to see you have an existential crisis...happy Pride Gavin! 🏳🌈
Would like to have reading vlog up next.
With you bro
I should have a reading vlog up next week 😊
Love how it looks, but the thought of arranging my shelves in a rainbow makes me break out in a cold sweat.
When I read the title I thought oh no, Gavin is going to give himself massive anxiety when he does this to his shelves. 😬🤣
Thank you for the giggles whilst I was marking! ☺️👍🌈
Wait Gavin it looks actually really good!! But also it’s fun to have covers facing out in the rainbow itself
Your middle grade recommendations are great .i love them ..(pls review the middle grades of your recent tpr soon after you read them.. )I would love vlogs up next...I Think it would be nice experience ... Pls reply

I can’t wait to get back into the swing of reviewing middle grade, I should be getting to those books soon 😊
11 minutes gay is now my favorite thing. 🌈
Gonna say it from now on
Your shelves came out as galaxy shelves rather than rainbow. I do enjoy :) My non-fiction books are height/rainbow order. My fiction is author.
Galaxy shelves, I like the sound of that
I like the way your rainbow shelves looked but I'm with you, my anxiety level was high as you were doing it...need more organization...lol
I’ve always wanted to try rainbow shelves! Buttttt I just can’t stand books with different sizes mixed 🥲! Maybe one day I’ll get over it!!
You are braver than me as I have to have series together or books by same author all together. I have to do height order as well. Not only that I struggle as I have shelving blocks rather than long shelves. I would love full length shelves but can’t fit them all in 🫣
It does look cracking, I really do like it but It really would fry my brain cells.
Just keep saying “It’s just for Pride, It’s just for Pride xx
@@cleg78 Haha it's just for pride, it's just for pride 😂xx

I think it looks pretty! But maybe next time you decide to shuffle your stuff, make a spreadsheet or list of your current order? lol I know it's a lot but it might save you some headache when you gotta put them all back 😬
I feel you 100% - I'm proud of you for doing what I don't think I can do! :D
Thank you Amy 😭💙
We have a rainbow shelf … set the series close to each other
Just move the green books to after the yellow, it should help the colors flow more
Oooo thank you for the tip!
Whenever I do this I love it, until I hate it, I just need my series together especially since I have a lot of special editions that were designed to match and not be separated!
I feel this
They look so pretty!! You should do a bookshelf scavenger hunt with them like this. Would make things interesting 😂
I think it totally works!! I absolutely love your rainbow shelf 🌈 it must have taken you ages
I think it looks amazing! I'd just move the yellow and white books from the bottom to the top!
That’s a good idea!

i could not live with myself if i had to split up series .. 🤣🌈 .. I feel your pain - rainbow shelves look good but i am not sure how anyone finds anything
The best way to make a rainbow shelf? Custom dust jackets lop
Rainbow shelves is just for aesthetics its the functionality that counts...I LOVE your old bookshelf😀
You: you can't really put trinkets on rainbow shelves
Me: *organises my trinkets by colour to match the books* yes you can
😅
I love that you gave this a red hot go even tho anyway ♡
I saw Skandan in a bookstore a few hours ago and it reminded me of a video where you mentioned it.

This looks amazing and I couldn't understand the anxiety of having these types of shelves lol you did a great job
Haha thank you
🌈 Ok now do a book scavenger hunt 😈 🌈
OMGGGG great idea!!
I think it looks really good and I am proud of you for trying this. I would love to see another video of you putting them back or like a live of you putting it back. As for me I don’t organize my books by rainbow or by author surname but by my brains idea of what should go together. So kinda favourites and then colours that look good together. It would never look it but it is organized and I know where everything is
I like the idea of doing a live bookshelf reorganisation! Thank you for the suggestion 🥰
i tried to once but the effort of it pissed me off and i felt like my eyes were tricking me so i was like f it and just put by feeling
I love it and your shirt! But the shelves have this sort of character to them that most don't. I think it's great
Thank you 🥰
I think the key is going in ROYGBIV rainbow order and not having the dark purple breaking up the bright blue and bright red/yellows. All about light to dark in my opinion
I wish I’d done that 😭
@@GavinReadsItAll like everyone is already saying in the comments, you gave us the realness that those Pinterest girlies don’t ever let us see 🫣🙈
I appreciate the realistic representation of rainbow shelves....also the idea of splitting up series makes me cringe. Couldn't be me 😅🤣.
Maybe just standalones might work for the rainbow? I have never tried it, and I am on your side, I want my books in alphabetical order and my series has to be together! I like that you tried it, you are better than I am.
Alphabetical all the way!!
@@GavinReadsItAll Just makes more sense... ♥
Please tell me you took photos prior to this so you can put them back with little stress
I..... did not 👀
@@GavinReadsItAll Ho my lordie
This was my thought to. No, Gavin!!!
@@GavinReadsItAll Oh no.....
I think rainbow shelves are pretty, but I could never do it. I need my series together and I like to organize by size as well.
This!!
